Women In The Life And Teachings Of Jesus, James A. Borland Jan 1991

Women In The Life And Teachings Of Jesus, James A. Borland

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

This chapter has two goals: (1) to show that Jesus placed a high value on women, and (2) to show that Jesus recognized role distinctions for men and women. Jesus’ high regard for women is seen in how He recognized their intrinsic equality with men, in how He ministered to women, and in the dignity He accorded to women during his ministry. Jesus’ recognition of role distinctions for men and women is demonstrated by His choosing only men to serve as His apostles with their primary tasks of preaching, teaching, and governing. Women, however, served in other important capacities, such …

On The Virgin Mary, Inclusive Ministry, ... And Christmas, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Hail, Favored One! The Lord is with you!" were the words announced to Mary by the angel Gabriel (Luke 1:28). After regrouping from the shock of it, and after receiving support from her cousin, Elizabeth, Mary exclaimed, "My soul magnifies (and amplifies) the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God, my Savior!" (vv. 46-47) What if young Mary would have said "Nd' to God's plan to use her in His unfolding plan of salvation? Or, what if Joseph or Elizabeth would have discouraged her from following the Lord's leading in her life? Heaven and earth would be all …

On The Sovereignty Of Nations... And The Kingdom Of God, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Normally, the editor's essay comments upon some aspect of the magazine's central theme, but this issue is an exception. Given the crisis in the Persian Gulf, one cannot responsibly be silent about it. On the other hand, with virtually every branch of the media already commenting on the crisis around the clock, it's hard to say anything new ... that's still worth reading."

The Role Of Public Schools In The Education Of 4-Year-Olds, Cheryl Lynnette Cavanaugh Grosvenor

Graduate Research Papers

A major educational issue in recent years is the role of public schools in the education of 4-year-olds (Day, 1988). This issue impacts all areas of society. It is a complex and emotional issue for teachers of young children, for parents, administrators, and officials in local, state, and federal governments.

The Internationalization Of Francisco De Vitoria And Domingo De Soto, Ramón Hernández, O.P.

Fordham International Law Journal

Part II discusses the time Vitoria spent teaching at the University of Salamanca. Part III highlights the principles of Vitoria’s internationalism. Part IV discusses Vitoria’s Americanist thinking. The Article concludes by arguing that De Soto would not have agreed with Spain’s approach of an armed expropriation of the land and lives o f the Indians.

A Manual For Sda Ministers Of South Brazil To Train The Laity In Understanding How To Evangelize Roman Catholic Basic Ecclesial Communities, Jose Miranda Rocha Jan 1991

A Manual For Sda Ministers Of South Brazil To Train The Laity In Understanding How To Evangelize Roman Catholic Basic Ecclesial Communities, Jose Miranda Rocha

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. Roman Catholic Basic Ecclesial Communities in Brazil have been a socio-religious phenomenon during more than two decades. As militant Catholics, members of the communities share four fundamental premises, i.e., a new way of seeing reality, a new way of being the Church, a new way of approaching Scripture, and a new way of doing mission. These premises challenge Seventh-day Adventists to develop new strategies when attempting to evangelize Basic Ecclesial Community membership. To date, no specific study by SDAs addresses the evangelization of Basic Ecclesial Community members. This raises the question of how Basic Ecclesial Communities can be evangelized. …

Response To "New Documents: Qumran And Gnostic Writings" By Joseph A. Fitzmyer, Jr., Sidnie White Crawford Jan 1991

Response To "New Documents: Qumran And Gnostic Writings" By Joseph A. Fitzmyer, Jr., Sidnie White Crawford

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

In my response, I will discuss three points raised by Professor Fitzmyer: the identification of the Qumran sect as the Essenes, Jerome Murphy-O’Connor’s hypothesis of the Babylonian origins of the Qumran sect, and the impact of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls on Old Testament textual criticism.

I would suggest that the group of Jews who inhabited Qumran may have evolved over time, from a group with deep roots in Palestinian Judaism, who split with other Jews over such disputed things as law and calendar, to a sect with highly developed doctrines of, for example, predestination and angelology, which …
