"But Where Shall Understanding Be Found?" Searching For Sophia, Personified Wisdom, Kathleen Damiani Apr 1991

"But Where Shall Understanding Be Found?" Searching For Sophia, Personified Wisdom, Kathleen Damiani

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The thesis examines the image of Sophia, divine feminine wisdom, from the point of view of -archetypal psychology. The paper describes the emergence of Sophia in the Old Testament against the background of the development of monotheism in Judaism. Modern scholarship defines Sophia in religious terms, thus restricting her meaning to the limits imposed by the Judaeo-Christian concept of God. When the "problem" of Sophia is removed from the language of theology, however, and re-examined from the perspective of archetypal psychology, new meanings emerge. The position taken is that Sophia is an archetypal image which personifies the capacity of reflection …

An Analysis Of Evangelical Revivals With Suggestions For Encouraging And Maximizing The Effects Of An Outpouring Of The Holy Spirit In Evangelism, James Douglas Porter Mar 1991

An Analysis Of Evangelical Revivals With Suggestions For Encouraging And Maximizing The Effects Of An Outpouring Of The Holy Spirit In Evangelism, James Douglas Porter

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this thesis project is to analyze the relationship between revival and evangelism in the context of the outpouring of the Holy spirit and suggest strategies by which revivals may be encouraged and the energy of revival may be harnessed in the evangelism of large numbers of people.

The thesis project is composed of two parts. The first part surveys an evangelical theology of revival and evangelism. Here the author surveys biblical and historical data relevant to the subject. He then defines or describes; (1) revival, (2) evangelism, (3) personal conversion, (4) people movements, (5) the relationship between …

New Testament Church Government: Fidelity And Flexibility, A. Boyd Luter Jan 1991

New Testament Church Government: Fidelity And Flexibility, A. Boyd Luter

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

In spite of disagreement over what constitutes the biblical form of local church government, it is still normally assumed that all churches should have the same governmental structure and that the qualifications for a particular leadership position should be the same . . Such an approach pours all the major structure and qualification passages to the same mold, ignoring significant evidence for “flexibility” in regard to churches at different stages of growth. Particularly suggestive are variations between the supposed “twin” passages: 1 Timothy 3:1-13 and Titus 1:5-9. Careful consideration of the similarities and differences leads to the conclusion that it …

The Background To The Good Shepherd Discourse In John 10, Donald L. Fowler Jan 1991

The Background To The Good Shepherd Discourse In John 10, Donald L. Fowler

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

There are few more beloved images from the Bible than that of Christ as our “God Shepherd.” God as or shepherd is a well-known biblical idea common to both testaments. After the NT period, this image of Christ remained popular with the church as it spread west through the gentile world. As it left its original Semitic setting, however, it is clear that the context of the image was quickly lost. While the shepherd image for Christ would be the most popular pictorial representation in the first four centuries, by the middle of the fifth century A.D., it had all …

African Americans And The Bible: Outline Of An Interpretive History, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

Since every reading of important texts, especially mythic or religious texts, reflects a "reading" or assessment of one's world, and since the Bible has from the founding of the nation served as an icon, a history of African Americans' historical readings of the Bible is likely to reflect their historical self-understandings—as Africans in America.

Influence Of Feminist Scholarship On My Theological Work, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

It is an honor for me to have been asked to be a part of this roundtable
discussion. I join Francis Fiorenza in recognizing the enormous (that is,
radical, disturbing) contributions that feminist scholarship (in all of its variety)
has made to religious studies. I take special delight in having the
opportunity to reflect upon the influence of feminist scholarship upon biblical
studies and upon my own scholarly development and work.

The Passion And Resurrection According To John, Craig R. Koester Jan 1991

The Passion And Resurrection According To John, Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

The story of the passion follows the upward movement of the pendulum. It begins with Jesus in the posture of a slave, washing his disciples’ feet (chap. 13); but concludes when Thomas recognizes that Jesus is both Lord and God (20:28), bringing the story back to the high point where it began in 1:1. Each year John’s passion account appears in the lectionary for Holy Week and his story of the resurrection is appointed for Easter and the Sunday after Easter, providing an opportunity for sustained reading and proclamation of these texts. John’s narrative is masterfully told; the drama is …
