Deliberation And Determinism: Two Processes Affecting The Soul From Antiquity To Modernity, Morgan Fuksa Jun 2024

Deliberation And Determinism: Two Processes Affecting The Soul From Antiquity To Modernity, Morgan Fuksa

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Notions of the soul, its corporeal and tangible makeup, and its division amongst gender has increasingly varied from Antiquity to Modern periods. For writers such as Origen, the soul implicates an inherent identity, seen through his belief in free will, and levels of rationality embedded into the soul based on gender. In modernity, notions of the soul have changed drastically based on the genre of literature surveyed. For Kate Chopin, a modernist writer, the soul is subjected to determinism, an inescapable process that subscribes to the idea that free will is absent, as outside factors will determine you to act …

A Study And Critique Of Sexual Violence Against Disabled Individuals In Sub-Saharan Africa: Implications For Policy And Practice Of Trauma-Informed Care, Kaeley Sells Jun 2024

A Study And Critique Of Sexual Violence Against Disabled Individuals In Sub-Saharan Africa: Implications For Policy And Practice Of Trauma-Informed Care, Kaeley Sells

Lux et Fides: A Journal for Undergraduate Christian Scholars

This paper examines and critiques current sexual violence against disabled individuals in Sub-Saharan Africa by evaluating the social and cultural stigma present that perpetuates cycles of vulnerabilities. Currently, women and girls with disabilities are disproportionally at risk for sexual violence as economic, cultural, and political structures in many Sub-Saharan African countries fail to recognize and adequately protect those with disabilities. Incorporating evidence from journals, books, reviews, and studies, this paper demonstrates the need for non-government and government actors to recognize the need to provide protection and trauma-informed care for disabled individuals.

Korean Newspapers And The “Irish Problem”: Japanese Censorship In Colonial Korea, 1920-1930, Jaehyun Kim Jun 2024

Korean Newspapers And The “Irish Problem”: Japanese Censorship In Colonial Korea, 1920-1930, Jaehyun Kim

Student Work

Jaehyun Kim’s thesis, “Korean Newspapers and the ‘Irish Problem’: Japanese Censorship in Colonial Korea, 1920-1930,” touches upon a subject that scholars of colonial Korea have given insufficient attention to. Kim asks why there featured so many colonial Korean run newspaper articles on the Irish Independent movement in the 1920s and 1930s when the Japanese colonial government actively censored Korean newspapers. Indeed, in the wake of the March First Independent Movement, the colonial authorities shifted its harsh military rule to a more conciliatory cultural policy, allowing Koreans to vent their nationalistic sentiments within the confines of state control. However, the level …

The One-And-A-Half Chinas’ Problem: Taiwan And The Origins Of Peaceful Reunification, 1978–1988, Lucas Miner Jun 2024

The One-And-A-Half Chinas’ Problem: Taiwan And The Origins Of Peaceful Reunification, 1978–1988, Lucas Miner

Student Work

Lucas Miner’s thesis, “The One-and-a-Half Chinas’ Problem, Taiwan and the Origins of Peaceful Reunification, 1978–1988,” deals with attempts by the Chinese Communist Party and the Guomindang to achieve unification between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Taiwan during the early phase of China’s reform era. The thesis seeks to update our interpretation of Cross-Strait relations by exploring the origins of peaceful reunification, tracing its early evolution from 1978 to 1985. Primary sources from both sides of the strait—especially from the rich repository at the Academia Historica in Taipei—allows Miner to construct a nuanced and significant narrative that uniquely incorporates …

Nothing About Us Without Us: A Folkloristic Approach To Creating Neurodivergent-Friendly Pedagogies For Secondary Classrooms, Brittney Hatchett Jun 2024

Nothing About Us Without Us: A Folkloristic Approach To Creating Neurodivergent-Friendly Pedagogies For Secondary Classrooms, Brittney Hatchett

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper examines how utilizing an applied folkloristic approach of studying the communities of ADHD and autistic people allows us to conduct research that actively involves the voices of ADHD and autistic adults. I have collected personal experience narratives from ADHD and autistic college-aged students about their experiences with different teaching strategies in junior high and high school. Through analysis of these narratives, I examine how the narratives of ADHD and autistic individuals can help guide educational pedagogies towards models that more equitably consider cultures of disabled individuals and better meet the educational needs of future neurodivergent students while simultaneously …

Diet Reconstruction Of El Sidrón Neandertals Using Art, An Experimental Approach, Hannah Jaghab Jun 2024

Diet Reconstruction Of El Sidrón Neandertals Using Art, An Experimental Approach, Hannah Jaghab

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The study aims to experimentally examine the diet of the El Sidrón Neandertals. Previous dental microwear research suggests these individuals relied on Physcomitrella patens (forest moss), Schizophyllum commune (split-gill mushrooms), and Pinus koraiensis (pine nuts); however, the formation processes of microwear have recently been debated. Due to the lack of meat found in the calculus, it has been suggested that these ancestors were vegetarian. This experiment will create dental microwear using Artificial Resynthesis Technology using the foods aforementioned, shedding light on both the formation processes of microwear and the diet of these hominins.

Aromas Y Sabores Para Los Dioses Mayas: Alimentos De Ixim Y Pom, Diana Peralta Cervantes Jun 2024

Aromas Y Sabores Para Los Dioses Mayas: Alimentos De Ixim Y Pom, Diana Peralta Cervantes

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Tamales In Yucatán: Reflections On 52 Years Of Piib Gastronomy, Allan F. Burns Jun 2024

Tamales In Yucatán: Reflections On 52 Years Of Piib Gastronomy, Allan F. Burns

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Abstract: “The first time I made tamales in the Yucatan of Mexico was in a village close to Tixcacal Guardia, Quintana Roo in 1972, some 52 years ago as I write this essay. It was in the fall and extended families were celebrating the harvest of milpas with something called “jaanali kol” (the feast of the milpa). We dug a pit, about four by eight feet oblong, lined it with stones, and built a fire. We were all men around the fire, and women were nearby in a house making chicken stew and other foods.” So begins this personal reflection …

Early Threads Of Connection. Probing Infants' Understanding Of Caregiving Relationships, Christina Steele, Megan Richardson, Denis Tatone, Ashley Thomas Jun 2024

Early Threads Of Connection. Probing Infants' Understanding Of Caregiving Relationships, Christina Steele, Megan Richardson, Denis Tatone, Ashley Thomas

School of Psychology

Despite the centrality of caregiving relationships in the lives of infants, little is known about whether and how infants represent these relationships characterized by strong attachment and asymmetry in obligation and skills. The current studies (N=95) investigate whether 8-to-10-month-old infants attend to two cues‚Äîaffiliative touch and physical size‚Äîto predict who will respond to distress. In Study 1 (n=49), infants expected larger characters to respond to the emotional needs of smaller characters, only when they saw affiliative touch (proportion looking time at large character: BF10=6.72). In Study 2 (n=46), they did not expect smaller characters to respond to larger characters (proportion …

Cocinar Para Dioses Y Hombres: Los Tamales De Los Lacandones Del Norte, Alice Balsanelli Jun 2024

Cocinar Para Dioses Y Hombres: Los Tamales De Los Lacandones Del Norte, Alice Balsanelli

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

Building Trust: The Role Of Place-Based Consciousness In Vaccine Hesitancy, Ramsey W. Ash Jun 2024

Building Trust: The Role Of Place-Based Consciousness In Vaccine Hesitancy, Ramsey W. Ash

Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses

Vaccine hesitancy poses a threat to public health initiatives of the 21st century. Following a stark divide in the rural/urban COVID-19 vaccine uptake and harsh disparities between these areas in COVID-19 moralities and morbidities, further understanding of the drivers of vaccine hesitancy are needed. This study makes use of the framework of place-based consciousness (PBC), pioneered by scholars of rural political science, such as Katherine Cramer, to explore this phenomenon as a mechanism by which to understand vaccine hesitancy. To examine this, an experimental survey was distributed to 300 Americans (150 rural and 150 urban) that inquired about their PBC, …

Let Us Feast! The Long Tradition Of The Feast And How It Has Featured Through Time In Literature And Film, Anke Klitzing Jun 2024

Let Us Feast! The Long Tradition Of The Feast And How It Has Featured Through Time In Literature And Film, Anke Klitzing

Articles

Why do we celebrate so often with good food? Festive meals are as ancient as they are contemporary, and have featured in books, films and stories since we began to tell them, from Beowulf to Big Night (1996). Feasts strengthen interpersonal and communal bonds, but also offer the chance to showcase wealth and generosity; however, being a host can be a challenge as well.

Fan Networks In Women’S Sport: An Egocentric Analysis Of Social Fans And Isofans, Matthew Katz, Nicole E. Melton, Risa F. Isard, Nola Agha Jun 2024

Fan Networks In Women’S Sport: An Egocentric Analysis Of Social Fans And Isofans, Matthew Katz, Nicole E. Melton, Risa F. Isard, Nola Agha

Sport Management

Guided by network theory, the purpose of this paper is to explore the consumption networks of Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) fans. Through an egocentric network analysis, the authors utilize hierarchical linear modeling to examine the strength of consumption ties among WNBA fans during the 2019 season. Initial results revealed an unexpected finding – the presence of participants who reported having no fan-to-fan ties, whom we term IsoFans. A second sample of men’s basketball fans was then collected to serve as a comparative confirmation of the unexpected result, whereby IsoFans occurred in the men’s sport sample at a much lower …

Theorizing Constitutional Change In East Asia, John Gillespie Jun 2024

Theorizing Constitutional Change In East Asia, John Gillespie

Chicago Journal of International Law

How do constitutions change in response to social problems? This Article explores why constitutions in three East Asian countries, namely Japan, Indonesia, and China, changed rapidly during times of social crisis and then incrementally evolved during periods of stability. It looks for explanations in historical institutionalism, a novel theory developed to understand the factors that give rise to the creation, persistence, and change of political institutions, such as constitutions. Constitutional change in these East Asian countries is explored by examining constitutionally defined eminent domain powers that enable governments to compulsorily acquire land in the public interest. The Article aims to …

Disasters and climate-related events, including tropical storms, droughts, coastal erosion, and ocean acidification, threaten small island nations. Given the urgency of reducing disaster risks and the effects of climate change on vulnerable populations, this reflection essay pursues three objectives. First, it highlights the role of anthropology, ethnography, and multi-sited research in exploring disaster impacts, climate crises, and public policy in island communities. It then highlights national planning and inter-regional activities to build awareness of various risk reduction efforts by island nations and multi-governmental organizations. This article concludes with discussion prompts to engage researchers, scholars, students, and practitioners studying and working …

A Retrospective And Prospective Roundtable On The Fiftieth Anniversary Of Horizons - Editor’S Introduction To Horizons V.51 No.1, Sandra Marie Schneiders, Min-Ah Cho Jun 2024

A Retrospective And Prospective Roundtable On The Fiftieth Anniversary Of Horizons - Editor’S Introduction To Horizons V.51 No.1, Sandra Marie Schneiders, Min-Ah Cho

Jesuit School of Theology

After tracing the history of the term “spirituality” and the discipline of spirituality up to the mid-twentieth century, this article describes the contemporary understanding of spirituality as lived religious experience and of the academic discipline which studies this subject. This phenomenology of the discipline grounds a position on the relationship between lived spirituality and theology on the one hand, and the academic disciplines of spirituality and theology on the other.

In addition to six peer-reviewed articles, the “creative teaching” feature, and an editorial essay, the Fall 1986 issue of Horizons featured an editorial symposium titled “Catholicism and Modernity” and a …

"We Lived The River Through Our Bodies": Environmental Care, Intergenerational Relations, And Sustainable Peacebuilding In Colombia, Angela J. Lederach

Peace Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"This chapter offers an ethnographic account3 of youth peacebuilding practices in Montes de María. I place Jose’s pressing question, 'who am I?' as a central starting point to examine the foundational role that identity work plays in youth processes of 'provoking' peace in Montes de María, Colombia. I center Jose’s critique of the harm enacted when analytic attention focuses solely on youth who have migrated to urban cities. Instead, I turn my attention to the lives of youth who, against all odds, have stayed. I argue that the struggle to reclaim a sense of self, place, and belonging is at …
