To Avoid Or Grapple With Tensions? Preservice Teachers Learning To Teach Literacy For Social Justice, Kathryn Struthers Ahmed Jun 2024

To Avoid Or Grapple With Tensions? Preservice Teachers Learning To Teach Literacy For Social Justice, Kathryn Struthers Ahmed

The Reading Professor

This nested case study explored the individual and environmental factors shaping preservice teachers' (PSTs') learning about teaching literacy for social justice while student teaching in urban, high-poverty schools. Grounded in Cultural Historical Activity Theory, findings show how the unique interplay of contextual factors led to different learning outcomes for PSTs, despite having similar experiences and perspectives on literacy teaching. Notably, when PSTs avoided tensions and contradictions between their student teaching placements and their university-based teacher education program, their learning towards the university's programmatic goals was constrained. However, when they opted to grapple with instructional tensions, their learning was more expansive. …

Land-Use Governance And Indigenous Engagement In Arctic Alaska And Norway: Successes, Current Gaps, And Paths Forward, Ningning Sun Jun 2024

Land-Use Governance And Indigenous Engagement In Arctic Alaska And Norway: Successes, Current Gaps, And Paths Forward, Ningning Sun

Environmental Studies Senior Theses

This study aims to analyze the land use governance structures and the role of Indigenous engagement in Alaska and Norway using a comparative approach, with special focus on successful practices, current gaps, and paths forward to achieve equitable governance. Extractive land uses, such as oil and gas extraction and the construction of wind farms, have mixed impacts on Indigenous communities and lead to social and legal issues such as land use conflict and environmental injustice. Previous research has studied land use governance in Arctic countries with regard to Indigenous Peoples, yet there is a lack of literature that spans Alaska …

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

There is a knowledge gap regarding the link between disaster exposure and adolescent mental health problems in developing countries. This study examines the case of Sri Lanka to investigate (a) the immediate and long-term mental health impact of the 2004 tsunami disaster on adolescents and (b) the potential moderating effects of unique cultural and family practices that prevail in Sri Lanka. This study used a random sample of 160 adolescents (ages 12–19) and their mothers who were exposed to the tsunami disaster while living in a southern Sri Lankan village and provided prospective data immediately after the disaster (2005) and …

Salmon Mislabeling Rates Uncovered In Restaurants And Grocery Stores In Seattle, Jewel L. Garcia, Jewel L. Garcia Jun 2024

Salmon Mislabeling Rates Uncovered In Restaurants And Grocery Stores In Seattle, Jewel L. Garcia, Jewel L. Garcia

Honors Projects

Salmon has been a cultural icon in Seattle, Washington for many generations because it has and continues to sustain the people who reside on this land. Seafood fraud, in which a seafood’s genetic identity does not match its vendor-claimed identity, is not a new phenomenon, and many studies have been conducted internationally to explore the extent of this issue. With human and environmental health concerns on the line, a salmon fraud (mislabeling) study must be conducted in a state where immensely high salmon sales and serious recreational efforts occur to assess Seattle’s marketplace honesty. By genetically barcoding the highly conserved …

Basque Identity In The 21st Century: Up Close No One Is Normal, Julieta Gaztañaga Jun 2024

Basque Identity In The 21st Century: Up Close No One Is Normal, Julieta Gaztañaga

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

A dynamic conception of identity is not about asserting traits or searching for primordial essences but about the processes and contexts of its dynamic and living production including its social futures. Looking forward to contributing to Basque Studies this article offers an analysis of the complexities of contemporary reconfigurations of identification processes by focusing on the problem of Basque identity in the 21st century. I propose an approach not linked to the "Homeland/Diaspora" model but rather to a form of multifaceted and trans-local dynamics that arises from interaction with multiple places and contexts of cultural production and collective identification. The …

Antiblackness In College Athletics: Facilitating High Impact Campus Engagement And Successful Career Transitions Among Black Athletes, Eddie Comeaux, Sara E. Grummert

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

There are increasing concerns about the quality of educational experiences of NCAA Division I Black athletes in big-time college sports. Calls for reform have come from within colleges and universities and beyond. This article presents findings from a review of the extant research on high-impact engagement activities of Black athletes, which have been shown to be conditional on the campus racial climate and antiblack racism in the multibillion-dollar athletics enterprise. The article concludes with an introduction to the Career Transition Scorecard, a mechanism and process designed to shift cognitive frames among practitioners, foster evidence-based practices, and improve campus experiences and …

Repetitive Thinking, Social Connectedness, And Distressing Sexual Experiences In Autistic And Non-Autistic Students: Examining Social-Cognitive Risk Factors And Mental Health During The College Transition, Erin Elizabeth Mckenney Jun 2024

Repetitive Thinking, Social Connectedness, And Distressing Sexual Experiences In Autistic And Non-Autistic Students: Examining Social-Cognitive Risk Factors And Mental Health During The College Transition, Erin Elizabeth Mckenney

Theses and Dissertations

The prevention and treatment of mental health concerns are consistently named among autistic adults’ highest clinical and research priorities. While several theories have been proposed to explain the high prevalence of depression and anxiety in autistic populations, virtually no longitudinal research has evaluated causal mechanisms. The first study in this dissertation aims to explore how known contributors to depression and anxiety identified by general population research – namely, rumination, dissatisfaction with social connectedness, and distressing sexual experiences – relate to the development of internalizing symptoms in autistic individuals during the transition to college. The second study explores potential contributors to …

Moral Economy Of The Frontiers: Precarious Healthcare In Malinau, Anwar B. Arifin Jun 2024

Moral Economy Of The Frontiers: Precarious Healthcare In Malinau, Anwar B. Arifin

Antropologi Indonesia

The precarity of a nation’s healthcare system often shows its true colours in remote areas, including the frontiers. This lack of stability is also seen in Malinau, where inaccessibility due to inadequate infrastructure leads to a shortage of basic medicines and necessary medical equipment. Coupled with limited healthcare workers, doctors and nurses frequently encounter situations in which they are unable to take care of patients properly. This creates a specific form of moral economy that is inevitably shaped by medical infrastructure. While moral economy in healthcare does not break any new grounds, there is room to explore the dynamics of …

Infrastructural Violence And Women's Health In Northern Peru, Aman Kothadia Jun 2024

Infrastructural Violence And Women's Health In Northern Peru, Aman Kothadia

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Evidence suggests that communities lacking access to water and water-related resources see increased health disparities due to structural and environmental factors. In this poster, we contend that a lack of water resources acts as a form of “infrastructural violence” that impacts the lives of women. Specifically, we draw from a broader research project on water insecurity and gender-based violence conducted in Peru from 2021-2022 to highlight the differential experiences of women living in two communities, one with water infrastructure and one without it. We conclude that infrastructural and societal inequities pose a significant health risk to women in water-insecure regions.

El Big Model Como Herramienta De Análisis Y Diagnóstico, Martín Van Houtte, Damián Fraustro Jun 2024

El Big Model Como Herramienta De Análisis Y Diagnóstico, Martín Van Houtte, Damián Fraustro

Journal of Roleplaying Studies and STEAM

Generous Curiosity: Connections, Community And Commensality In Research, Mairtin Macconiomaire, Brian J. Murphy Jun 2024

Generous Curiosity: Connections, Community And Commensality In Research, Mairtin Macconiomaire, Brian J. Murphy

Books/Book Chapters

This chapter will discuss two research communities, one focussed on Franco-Irish Studies and the other focusing on Food Studies. They negotiate conferences, peer-reviewed journals and monographs without it becoming a ‘blood sport’.The theme of this chapter is born out of a lifetime’s engagement with generous curiosity, which stems from a number of serendipitous life moments and meetings. It focuses on the important role that unique research communities can play in both our professional and personal lives. It builds on sociologist Ray Oldenburg’s concept of third places.

Romani American History: Historical Absences And Their Consequences, Ann Ostendorf Jun 2024

Romani American History: Historical Absences And Their Consequences, Ann Ostendorf

History Faculty Scholarship

American historians have created an historical absence by ignoring Romani people’s presence in evidence from the past. The origins of this “absence-ing” are multifaceted and interrelated, but fundamentally stem from the continued influence of out-of-date and unprofessional ways of thinking and knowing. Examining and understanding “absence-ing” requires a consideration of the nature of the discipline of history as well as a history of the missing historicization of Romani Americans. The consequences of the “absence-ing” of Romani people from American histories have negatively and distinctively influenced four different groups of people: historians of the Americas; historians of Romani people in Europe; …

Understanding Mesoamerican Life Cycles And Rituals Through Figurines, Laney Waters Jun 2024

Understanding Mesoamerican Life Cycles And Rituals Through Figurines, Laney Waters

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Children of ancient times are frequently overlooked within the archaeological record. For this presentation, I examined different aspects of Mesoamerican culture in order to identify two figurines discovered at the Postclassic site of Tzunun, Mexico. These figurines shine light onto ritualistic objects and ceremonies regarding childbirth as well as aiding to clarify the roles and expectations of Mesoamerican children. They allow us to investigate the past and in turn to reconstruct Maya life cycles and how children progressed into adulthood in Mesoamerican, and more specifically, Maya society.

Fighting Erasure And Dispossession In The San Francisco Bay Area: Putting Archaeology To Work For The Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, Lee M. Panich, Monica V. Arellano, Michael Wilcox, Gustavo Flores

Faculty Publications

The Muwekma Ohlone Tribe has long been involved in the archaeology and stewardship of their ancestral homelands, both through their own cultural resource management (CRM) firm and though collaborations with academic and CRM archaeologists. In this article, we build on the past 40 years of archaeological collaborations in the southern San Francisco Bay region and offer examples of how archaeologists can support tribal heritage and environmental stewardship by using the traditional purview of material culture in combination with a broader array of evidence and concerns. As presented in our brief case studies, the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and scholars are working …

Synesthetic Symbolism: Community Engagement With The Sacred At The Boudhanath Stupa, Madeleine E. Tevonian Jun 2024

Synesthetic Symbolism: Community Engagement With The Sacred At The Boudhanath Stupa, Madeleine E. Tevonian

Lawrence University Honors Projects

This paper is a discussion of the complex relationship between the Great Boudhanath Stupa in the Kathmandu Valley, and the diverse Buddhist community that surrounds it. I argue that liberative sense experience and movement-encoded cultural knowledge make the community of practitioners a part of the stupa—and thus necessary to any examination of it. My argument is contextualized by a background on stupas and etymology of several Sanskrit and Tibetan terms, and I utilize a framework of religious studies concepts of sacred space and pilgrimage as well as on-site anthropological fieldwork focusing on practitioners’ daily lives. I investigate how the stupa …

Building Food Agency In The Fox Valley: A Program Evaluation Case Study At The Building For Kids In Appleton, Wisconsin, William R. Brenneman

Lawrence University Honors Projects

The Building For Kids children’s museum in Appleton, Wisconsin, as a part of their recent initiative to promote food and nutrition education in the Fox Valley, developed and administered cooking classes geared towards families with young children. This honors project evaluates these workshops through the theoretical lens of food agency, an emerging paradigm in food systems scholarship. Following a mixed-methods design, this project utilizes group interviews, systematic behavior observations, and the Cooking and Food Provisioning Action Scale survey to identify barriers and supports of home cooking among Fox Valley parents, recommend areas of opportunity for future workshops, and explore the …

Reading Phillis Wheatley’S Catastrophist Poetics: Heroic Couplets And Environmental Justice, Katarina O'Briain Jun 2024

Reading Phillis Wheatley’S Catastrophist Poetics: Heroic Couplets And Environmental Justice, Katarina O'Briain

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

This essay offers suggestions for reading Phillis Wheatley as an early poet of environmental justice by tracing the figure of catastrophe that runs throughout her works. The essay recounts teaching Phillis’s early poems in an upper-level undergraduate seminar on “Ecocriticism: Environmental Justice Literature” as well as in a graduate seminar called “Global Georgics: Land and Labour Across the Long Eighteenth Century.” Looking closely at moments where she describes “pestilential vapors,” or when “Heav’n quakes, earth trembles, and the shores resound,” I argue that Wheatley’s carefully ordered heroic couplet poems speak calamity more than regularity, catastrophe more than gradualism. This pedagogical …
