The Role Of Pragmatics In Second Language Teaching, Roberto Eduardo Echeverria Castillo Jan 2009

The Role Of Pragmatics In Second Language Teaching, Roberto Eduardo Echeverria Castillo

MA TESOL Collection

This research paper explores the application of pragmatics in second language teaching. It presents pragmatics as a discipline that may be taught and learned utilizing the experiential learning cycle. The paper explores challenging pragmatic experiences and how the cycle was used to overcome them. Additionally, it proposes a model to teach pragmatics, illustrated by a lesson based on an episode of a television show. Finally, the paper ends with my personal view of this project, and its applications on my learning of English and to my language teaching.

Farcical Philology: Alexander Shewan's Homeric Games At An Ancient St. Andrews, Thomas E. Jenkins Jan 2009

Farcical Philology: Alexander Shewan's Homeric Games At An Ancient St. Andrews, Thomas E. Jenkins

Classical Studies Faculty Research

It is one of the many ironies of the term "philology" that what to the untrained ear may connote a dry and lifeless field of study was once the fightingest of fighting words; indeed, philology has been only recently retired as a field with an especial love for internecine warfare. "Love of literature," it seems, could spawn loathing of fellow literature-lovers, and as philology grew as a discipline and even academic profession, the stakes were high. Any examination of metaphilology, then, must include a glance at philology's discourses of error and detection, of correction and humiliation: philology- if dedicated to …

Reformation Redivivus: Synergism And The New Perspective, Kent L. Yinger Jan 2009

Reformation Redivivus: Synergism And The New Perspective, Kent L. Yinger

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Debates over the New Perspective on Paul show a great deal of similarity to Reformation-era debates over synergism. In fact, synergism has become one of the more common charges made against the New Perspective by its critics. After documenting the charge in these modern debates, this article explores the details of synergistic controversy surrounding the Reformation. Among other things, various wings of the Reformation appear to have understood, and reacted to, synergism in quite-different ways. The article then highlights some aspects of New Perspective debates that are reminiscent of earlier theological debates over synergism and suggests ways in which greater …

The Eu Arms Embargo Against China: Should Europe Play A Role In East Asian Security?, Frans Paul Van Der Putten Jan 2009

The Eu Arms Embargo Against China: Should Europe Play A Role In East Asian Security?, Frans Paul Van Der Putten

Global Asia Journal

Europe and East Asia are highly interdependent through their extensive mutual trade and investment relations, but also because the European Union (EU), China, and Japan are major actors on international forums such as the United Nations (UN) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). While Europe has a stable regional security system – the main component of which is the EU – this is not the case in East Asia. The lack of a dependable security mechanism to deal with potential East Asian flashpoints such as the ‘Taiwan issue’ has a destabilising effect on Europe’s economic and security interests. Clearly, Europe …

Of Spanish Cows, Wild Boars, Unpredictable Weather, And Other Oddities, Lydia Sanchez Jan 2009

Of Spanish Cows, Wild Boars, Unpredictable Weather, And Other Oddities, Lydia Sanchez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this collection of connected stories, the inhabitants of the imaginary Mediterranean village of Marcenac struggle with daily situations that often take allures of a farce, simply because they occur in Marcenac. The stories explore the influence southern France's Roussillon region has on people, the way the proximity of the Spanish border and the Mediterranean shapes the inhabitants of Marcenac's daily lives, and the influence of the climate. Often, the Tramontane, the region's predominant wind, becomes a character. While some of the stories are told from a collective point of view, others reveal the inner thoughts of children and adults, …

The Evolving Architecture Of North American Integration, Laura Spitz Jan 2009

The Evolving Architecture Of North American Integration, Laura Spitz

Faculty Scholarship

Given its potential significance for democracy, sovereignty, government, governance, and justice in each of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, North American integration qua integration has thus far received surprisingly little attention from legal scholars and social scientists. While an expanding body of research explores the dynamics of continental integration in other contexts (especially Europe) and/or examines the meaning of globalization, regionalism, and multilateral internationalism in a general sense, the specific constitution of an integrated North American space remains largely undertheorized. This Article aims to advance the literature in this area by examining legal discourse as an example of the …

A Cautionary Tale: The Obama Coalition, Anti-Subordination Principles And Proposition 8, Jennifer Holladay, Catherine Smith Jan 2009

A Cautionary Tale: The Obama Coalition, Anti-Subordination Principles And Proposition 8, Jennifer Holladay, Catherine Smith

Scholarly Articles

In his journey to the White House, Barack Obama demonstrated that he could be, in the words of Dr. King, not merely "a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus," creating a coalition that called us to "look after not only ourselves but each other."

To be sure, Obama's coalition is an imperfect one. Proposition 8's passage reminds us that we still fall too readily into the categories of "us and them"--categories in which subjugated groups fight against each other, rather than alongside each other.

Still, Obama has set us on a new path in America's long journey toward …

The Death Of The American Trial, Robert P. Burns Jan 2009

The Death Of The American Trial, Robert P. Burns

Faculty Working Papers

This short essay is a summary of my assessment of the meaning of the "vanishing trial" phenomenon. It addresses the obvious question: "So what?" It first briefly reviews the evidence of the trial's decline. It then sets out the steps necessary to understand the political and social signficance of our vastly reducing the trial's importance among our modes of social ordering. The essay serves as the Introduction to a book, The Death of the American Trial, soon to be published by the University of Chicago Press.

The Language Of Consent In Police Encounters, Janice Nadler, J.D. Trout Jan 2009

The Language Of Consent In Police Encounters, Janice Nadler, J.D. Trout

Faculty Working Papers

In this chapter, we examine the nature of conversations in citizen-police encounters in which police seek to conduct a search based on the citizen's consent. We argue that when police officers ask a person if they can search, citizens often feel enormous pressure to say yes. But judges routinely ignore these pressures, choosing instead to spotlight the politeness and restraint of the officers' language and demeanor. Courts often analyze the language of police encounters as if the conversation has an obvious, context-free meaning. The pragmatic features of language influence behavior, but courts routinely ignore or deny this fact. Instead, current …
