The Continuing Quest For Jewish Legalism, Kent L. Yinger Jan 2009

The Continuing Quest For Jewish Legalism, Kent L. Yinger

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

In spite of widespread acceptance of the nonlegalistic character of first-century Judaism (following E. P. Sanders), some Pauline scholars continue to interpret the apostle’s statements against a backdrop of Jewish legalism. Rather than accuse Paul of misconstruing his own religious heritage, they choose a variety of paths to rediscovering legalism in Judaism. This article highlights seven of these approaches to rediscovering legalistic Judaism, all of which are deemed thus far unsuccessful, largely due to inadequate definitions of legalism.

Heterarchy As Complexity: Archaeology In Yoro, Honduras, Julia A. Hendon, Rosemary A. Joyce, Russell Sheptak Jan 2009

Heterarchy As Complexity: Archaeology In Yoro, Honduras, Julia A. Hendon, Rosemary A. Joyce, Russell Sheptak

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Based on archaeological evidence from the Cuyumapa Valley in Honduras, including the presence of multiple ballcourts, this paper argues that archaeologists need to pay more attention to Carole Crumley's concept of heterarchy when considering social relations, political relations, and power in ancient societies such as those of the Maya and their neighbors in Mesoamerica. We redefine complexity to include less centralized but regionally heterogeneous societies in which social and political relations are not all centralized into a single hierarchical structure. The Cuyumapa Valley falls in the zone traditionally described as the southeastern edge or periphery of Mesoamerica. Yet our research …

The Effects Of Human Activities On The Conservation Of Endangered Sea Turtles In Mexico : A Gis And Ethnographic Analysis, Joseì Rolando Pantoja Jan 2009

The Effects Of Human Activities On The Conservation Of Endangered Sea Turtles In Mexico : A Gis And Ethnographic Analysis, Joseì Rolando Pantoja

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

This is a study about the effects of human activities and tourist development on the Olive Ridley, an endangered sea turtle species that nests on the beaches of the Northern shores of the Bay of Banderas, Nayarit, Mexico. I traveled to the site and I used a mixed methods approach to do my research. First, I mapped the nesting sea turtle sites using GIS/GPS technology. I recorded the location of the nests on the beach using the GPS device for a period of three weeks. The data were imported into GIS and analyzed. Second, for the Ethnographic qualitative methods, I …

Assessing The Needs Ofsage-Grouse Local Working Groups: Final Technical Report, L. R. Belton, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, T. A. Messmer

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Over the last several decades, biologists have grown increasingly concerned about declines in populations of two species of sage-grouse (Centrocercus spp.), a bird whose range covers a vast portion of eleven western U.S. states and two Canadian provinces (Stiver et al. 2006). This chicken-sized bird inhabits sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) habitats on public and private land across its range. Recent declines in population numbers of this bird across its range have generated concern among landowners and state wildlife officials that the bird may be listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Sage-grouse local working groups (LWGs) have emerged as a centerpiece …

Developing An Entrepreneurial Education In A Residential College: An Exploratory Case Study, James Mcalexander, Rachel Nelson, Chris Bates

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is a source of innovation, job creation, and vibrancy for local and regional economies. As a direct result, there is a profound interest in creating an infrastructure that effectively encourages entrepreneurship and incubates entrepreneurial endeavors. Western State University has responded to this call by developing the Harvey Entrepreneurship Program, which is integrated in the Enterprise Residential College. The Harvey program provides a socially embedded experiential learning approach to entrepreneurial education. Faculty, students, entrepreneurs, and technical experts are drawn together in an environment that provides space for business incubators and an entrepreneurially focused curriculum. In this article, we present a case …

Classification Of Urban Features Using Airborne Hyperspectral Data, Bharath Ganesh Babu Jan 2009

Classification Of Urban Features Using Airborne Hyperspectral Data, Bharath Ganesh Babu

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Accurate mapping and modeling of urban environments are critical for their efficient and successful management. Superior understanding of complex urban environments is made possible by using modern geospatial technologies. This research focuses on thematic classification of urban land use and land cover (LULC) using 248 bands of 2.0 meter resolution hyperspectral data acquired from an airborne imaging spectrometer (AISA+) on 24th July 2006 in and near Terre Haute, Indiana. Three distinct study areas including two commercial classes, two residential classes, and two urban parks/recreational classes were selected for classification and analysis. Four commonly used classification methods – maximum likelihood (ML), …
