A Longitudinal Study Of The Educational Advancement Alliance, Inc. Afterschool And Summer Enrichment Programs, Karen E. Nicholas

Theses and Dissertations

By all accounts there is a crisis in the American educational system. From government officials at all levels to educators, both practitioners and researchers, the question of how to reconnect with America's youth is debated on a daily basis. Solutions to the problems are suggested, debated, and sometimes tested. One of the topics that is often deliberated is the impact of supplemental educational programs. In an effort to address issues of academic skill deficiencies and college preparedness, the Educational Advancement Alliance (EAA) was founded in 1990.

The intent of this study was to quantitatively evaluate the impact of the Educational …

Mythcon 40 - Sailing The Seas Of Imagination, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

Welcome to the 40th Annual Mythopoeic Conference

As I returned home from Mythcon 38 in Berkeley two years ago, I thought about how the Society had not had a Southern California Mythcon for several years. It seemed important to me that for this special anniversary conference that we return to the territory where the Society began. One thing led to another, and I ended up volunteering to chair this conference.

Humor And Attitude Toward Homosexuals: The Case Of Will & Grace, Heather Cribbs Jul 2009

Humor And Attitude Toward Homosexuals: The Case Of Will & Grace, Heather Cribbs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Data collected from a survey questionnaire disseminated to college students was used to examine the relationship between humor in the mass media on audience attitude. This research study attempted to link the comedic nature of media with a heightened tolerance toward unpopular messages by looking specifically at the show Will & Grace. Results supported the hypothesized positive relationship between humor on attitudes toward the show, as well as attitudes toward real life homosexuals. In addition, distraction and interpersonal communication served as mediators between humor and attitudes. Results supported positive relationships between humor and both distraction and interpersonal communication, and supported …

Ethnographic Literary Journalism, Christel Lane Swasey Jul 2009

Ethnographic Literary Journalism, Christel Lane Swasey

Theses and Dissertations

Leon Dash and Ted Conover have modeled an ethnographic approach to literary journalism. This approach combines literary journalism's compelling narrative techniques with ethnographic “naturalist-like” (Brewer, 2000) thoroughness and trustworthiness. Rosa Lee: A Mother in Urban America, by Leon Dash, and Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing, by Ted Conover, exemplify this painstaking method that skillfully uses the narrative craft, generates trustworthy data, and contributes to an academic body of knowledge as well as exposing findings to the general public. Dash, Conover, and others have demonstrated the synergy and problem-solving potential of merging anthropology with literary journalism, yet there is no …

Historical Fire Frequency On Contrasting Slope Facets Along The Mckenzie River, Western Oregon Cascades, Peter J. Weisberg Jul 2009

Historical Fire Frequency On Contrasting Slope Facets Along The Mckenzie River, Western Oregon Cascades, Peter J. Weisberg

Western North American Naturalist

Fire has been a critical influence on forest dynamics over much of western North America, and knowledge of historical fire regimes provides a valuable reference point for guiding ecosystem management. Spatial and temporal variations in historical (1550–1997) fire frequency were quantified for a 145-km2 area straddling the McKenzie River in the central western Cascades of Oregon. Fire-scar and tree-origin years estimated from cut stumps in 63 clearcut sites were used to approximately date fires. The estimated natural fire rotation was 162 years for the presettlement period (1550–1849). Natural fire rotation varied considerably over the period of record, ranging from …

Standing In The Center Of The World: The Ethical Intentionality Of Autoethnography, Nicole Wilkes Jul 2009

Standing In The Center Of The World: The Ethical Intentionality Of Autoethnography, Nicole Wilkes

Theses and Dissertations

Emmanuel Levinas's philosophy of ipseity and alterity has permeated Western thought for more than forty years. In the social sciences and the humanities, the recognition of the Other and focus on difference, alterity, has influenced the way we ethically approach peoples and arts from different cultures. Because focus on the ego, ipseity, limits our ethical obligations, focusing on the Other does, according to Levinas, bring us closer to an ethical life. Furthermore, the self maintains responsibility for the Other and must work within Levinas's ethical system to become truly responsible. Therefore, the interaction between self and Other is Levinas's …

Chimeras And Jagunços: Positivist Discourse In Euclides Da Cunha's Os Sertões, Justin Barber Jul 2009

Chimeras And Jagunços: Positivist Discourse In Euclides Da Cunha's Os Sertões, Justin Barber

History ETDs

The present study elucidates the discursive practice of positivism, as particularly manifested in late nineteenth-century Brazil. Founded in 1889, the Republic of the United States of Brazil was constructed as a positivist state by republican idealists and pragmatic oligarchs; the political embodiment of ordem e progresso (order and progress). It was a form of government meant to overcome Brazils imagined and concrete backwardness by strictly adhering to the Natural Laws identified by Auguste Comte, Charles Darwin, and, in particular, Herbert Spencer. Positivist progress was, however, contingent upon the elimination of the pathological, amorphous 'savage lower races. Non-white degeneration in Brazil, …

"Sparks From Law's Anvil": The Evolution Controversies In New Mexico, 1925-2008, Peter Incaudo Jul 2009

"Sparks From Law's Anvil": The Evolution Controversies In New Mexico, 1925-2008, Peter Incaudo

History ETDs

After attaining statehood in 1912, New Mexico witnessed an influx of American people, culture and controversies. This thesis tracks the development of controversies over the theory of evolution in the public schools of the state of New Mexico during the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century. Beginning with the states reaction to the 1925 Scopes trial, I discuss the reasons that the evolution controversy remained largely muted in 1920s New Mexico. Next, I examine the brief, but unique, 1927 evolution controversy sparked by a rumor of legislation to mandate the teaching of evolution. From there, I describe New Mexico's …

The Relationship Between Direct To Consumer Marketing And The Self-Perception Of Gerd Symptoms In The Young Adult Population, Sheila Kumar Jul 2009

The Relationship Between Direct To Consumer Marketing And The Self-Perception Of Gerd Symptoms In The Young Adult Population, Sheila Kumar

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms in a young adult population of university students and to examine the relationship between direct-to-consumer marketing and the self-perception of GERD symptoms. GERD is defined as the spectrum of disease usually producing symptoms of heartburn and acid regurgitation. Previous studies have varied prevalences in the adult population ranging from 5% to 45%, depending on the method of diagnosis. However, very little is known about the prevalence of GERD in the young adult population. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely utilized to control GERD symptoms, …

The Human Side Of Change: Towards A Pragmatic, Evolutionary Conception Of Cognition And Emotion In Organizational Change, Jason Smith Jul 2009

The Human Side Of Change: Towards A Pragmatic, Evolutionary Conception Of Cognition And Emotion In Organizational Change, Jason Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation synthesizes and analyzes an emblematic sample of three prevalent psychological approaches to organizational change and learning, giving particular attention to the conception of cognition and emotion. It also explores some of the philosophical and psychological assumptions undergirding these approaches. A web model depicting various epistemological influences is offered as a tool for exploring influences on the psychological research within and beyond this study. A second conceptual model is also offered as a tool for considering the hierarchical treatment and preferential placement of cognition over emotion theory and practice. The project draws on general philosophy, psychology, evolutionary theory, and …

We Latter-Day Saints Are Methodists: The Influence Of Methodism On Early Mormon Religiosity, Christopher C. Jones Jul 2009

We Latter-Day Saints Are Methodists: The Influence Of Methodism On Early Mormon Religiosity, Christopher C. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Historians have long noted Joseph Smith's early interest in Methodism. Demographic studies of early Mormon converts have demonstrated further that many of those attracted to the Mormon message on both sides of the Atlantic came from Methodist backgrounds. These two points, and the many similarities between Methodist and Mormon beliefs and practices, have led many scholars to suggest that Smith's church was influenced by the Methodists who joined the movement. This thesis explores the Methodist backgrounds of those Methodists who converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1830, when Joseph Smith formally organized his church(originally called …

Literary Case Histories And Medical Narratives In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Travis Wade Austin Jul 2009

Literary Case Histories And Medical Narratives In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Travis Wade Austin

Theses and Dissertations

Literature and medicine are not usually seen as related disciplines, but scholars have already begun producing fruitful scholarship regarding historical and aesthetic interactions between them. This thesis adds to that scholarship by examining medicine and literature in nineteenth-century Britain. More specifically, Thomas De Quincey's Confessions of an English Opium-Eater and Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde both use nineteenth-century medical case conventions to tell their stories. Furthermore, because both works deal with addiction, divided selves, and the power that physical substances can have on morality and character, these two works provide an excellent comparison coming …

Dressing Psychic Wounds: Clothing As Metaphor In Paule Marshall's Praisesong For The Widow And Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony, Angela D. Tartaglia Jul 2009

Dressing Psychic Wounds: Clothing As Metaphor In Paule Marshall's Praisesong For The Widow And Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony, Angela D. Tartaglia

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I investigate the function of dress as it relates to cultural retention in Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow and Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony, drawing upon the work of fashion theorists Joanne Entwistle, Alison Lurie and Anne Hollander. My examination of the two novels is informed by several excellent scholarly works which hold that characters' well being is determined by the extent to which they connect with their folkloric roots, the central message in both Ceremony and Praisesong for the Widow. I build on this discourse by demonstrating that the novels' consistent attention to clothing is a device …
