Palembangese In Print: An Nls Look At Literacies, Linguacies, Communicacies, And Culturacies In South Sumatra, Jacob M. Hall
Theses and Dissertations
People have been interacting with print in the South Sumatran city of Palembang for well over a millennium. Most of this literate activity has been carried out in languages other than the vernacular. Even now, the vast majority of print in the public realm in Palembang is in Indonesian, English, Arabic, and Chinese. And yet there are examples of the local language, Baso Pelembang, in print. This thesis looks for reasons behind these variations from the norm.
After exploring the perspective offered by the New Literacy Studies (NLS), this paper builds upon the foundation provided by these works. Through …

Traditional And Nontraditional Preservice Elementary Teachers' Perceptions About Mathematics And Mathematics Teaching, Anna Marie Wheeler
Dissertations
In this qualitative dissertation, I examined six nontraditional (based on age) and six traditional preservice elementary teachers' beliefs and changes in beliefs about mathematics and mathematics teaching. These case study participants were enrolled in one of three mathematics content courses designed for preservice elementary teachers at a mid-sized doctoral granting university in the western United States. I selected the twelve participants based on the predetermined criteria of gender (female), age (less than 30 for traditional and at least 30 for nontraditional), mathematics instructor, preservice mathematics course, and group dynamics. Data collection consisted of two approximately 45-minute long interviews per preservice …

"That Charm Of Remoteness": A Study Of Landscape Stability In Little Compton, Rhode Island, Katharine M. Johnson
"That Charm Of Remoteness": A Study Of Landscape Stability In Little Compton, Rhode Island, Katharine M. Johnson
Graduate Masters Theses
Little Compton, Rhode Island has long been considered a stable, isolated and rural location relative to surrounding towns and cities. A geophysical and archaeological examination in the front yards of the Wilbor house and Brownell farm was undertaken in order to gain a better understanding about how residents of the town maintained stable, rural lifeways during the period of industrialization and urbanization that characterized the rest of the state in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The results from these examinations revealed that there was a distinct lack of features and landscaping changes in the archaeological record in the …

Costly Myths: An Analysis Of Idling Beliefs And Behavior In Personal Motor Vehicles, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Amanda R. Carrico, Paul Padgett, Jonathan Gilligan, Kenneth A. Wallston
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Despite the large contribution of individuals and households to climate change, little has been done in the US to reduce the CO2 emissions attributable to this sector. Motor vehicle idling among individual private citizens is one behavior that may be amenable to large-scale policy interventions. Currently, little data are available to quantify the potential reductions in emissions that could be realized by successful policy interventions. In addition, little is known about the motivations and beliefs that underlie idling. In the fall of 2007, 1300 drivers in the US were surveyed to assess typical idling practices, beliefs and motivations. Results indicate …
The Insurance Relationship As Relational Contract And The "Fairly Debatable" Rule For First-Party Bad Faith, Jay M. Feinman
The Insurance Relationship As Relational Contract And The "Fairly Debatable" Rule For First-Party Bad Faith, Jay M. Feinman
San Diego Law Review
This Article uses relational contract theory to discuss the standard to be applied to evaluate the behavior of insurance companies in first-party bad faith cases. The Article first briefly summarizes relational contract theory and describes the insurance contract as a prime example of a relational contract. It then describes the law of bad faith in first-party insurance cases-cases in which a policyholder alleges that the insurance company has violated the duty of good faith and fair dealing that is present in every contract and intensified in insurance contracts. The most widely adopted standard for bad faith is the “fairly debatable” …
Self-Actualization In The Lives Of Medieval Female Mystics: An Ethnohistorical Approach, Cherel Jane Ellsworth Olive
Self-Actualization In The Lives Of Medieval Female Mystics: An Ethnohistorical Approach, Cherel Jane Ellsworth Olive
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This dissertation explores the cultural and psychological factors that permitted six medieval female mystics to assume positions of leadership and innovation in a world marked by extreme gender inequality. Women religious have often been charged with being neurotics, hysterics, narcissists, and nymphomaniacs whereas males with similar experiences are rarely subject to the same degree of criticism. It is argued here that the women may well have been seeking to achieve the form of self-actualization described by humanist psychologist, Abraham Maslow, as a result of the "conversion" experience analyzed by William James. Furthermore, applying modern categories of mental illness to these …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The purpose of this study was to understand the extent of forest management that is occurring on private forestlands enrolled in the West Virginia Forest Stewardship Program. To quantify the amount of forest management being applied, 295 telephone interviews were conducted in the Fall of 2005 inquiring participants about ten common forest management practices and extent of their implementation, in terms of acreage or mileage. In addition, this study sought to understand the factors associated with the number of respondents that had implemented practices as well as the amount of forestland on which these practices were applied, including practice recommendation, …
“Cosecha Voices”: Toward A Transcultural Pedagogy, Silvia Patricia Solis
“Cosecha Voices”: Toward A Transcultural Pedagogy, Silvia Patricia Solis
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In the fall of 2007, I began filming a course called Cosecha Voices, which centered on the migratory, farmworking experiences of South Texas students attending the University of Texas—Pan American. This thesis therefore, stems from my two-year collaborative experience with the Cosecha Voices project. I propose Cosecha Voices opened up an academic space for critical pedagogy and transculturation to intersect, creating a transcultural pedagogy. Transcultural pedagogy as praxis, centers on students' lived experiences, engaging educators and students in a transculturation of intersecting theories intertwined in oral performances, film ethnography, and testimonios as pedagogical practices and epistemologies. This process allows …

Effects Of Color And Animation On Visual Short -Term Memory In Computer-Environment Learning Tasks, Marc Debiase
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goals of this research study were to gain a better understanding of the effects of color and animation on visual short-term memory (STM) in computer-environment learning tasks. The research methodology was based on an investigative design that attempted to address weaknesses of previous visual STM research (Klauer & Zhao, 2004) to provide information readily applicable to instructional design and technology. A 3 x 2 x 3 totally-within participants, repeated-measures Factorial Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) design was utilized to investigate limitations on visual short-term memory learning processes in computer-learning environments. Participant scores for accuracy of visual learning tasks and participant …

Like As An Exemplifier: A Description Of Its Construction And The Relations It Can Mark, Helena L. Osborne
English Theses & Dissertations
This thesis analyzes data where like marks exemplification in naturally occurring discourse. The data for this study were obtained from thirteen interviews and consist of 193 utterances in which exemplifying like links two clauses. Each token consists of two components, each consisting of at least one clause (SV FINITE), linked by like. Based on Vincent's (2007) definition of exemplification, one component introduces a general situation and the other provides an example of that situation. This thesis presents several types of evidence that exemplifying like is a component in an exemplification construction. First, the semantic relation between components is …
Learning And Teaching Chinese Language And Culture In Dublin: Attitudes And Expectations, Yiling Liu
Learning And Teaching Chinese Language And Culture In Dublin: Attitudes And Expectations, Yiling Liu
Masters
In response to a world-wide tide of Chinese language learning, educational institutions in Ireland have begun, in the last five years, to put in place degree courses and an increasing number of classes for the teaching of Chinese. It is helpful to understand the attitudes and expectations of students and teachers concerning the learning and teaching of Chinese language and culture in an Irish teaching environment. Language is part of a particular culture. The learning and acquisition of a target culture are as important as learning the language per se. In a non-target language environment, the learning and teaching of …

Courtrooms As Battlefields In The Evolution War: Examining Judicial Behavior And The Outcomes Of Cases Involving Public Education And Religion, Trevor W. Ramsey
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the past century, various challenges to the teaching of the theory of evolution have made their way to the courts, with the two most recent dealing with the concept of "intelligent design." The goal of this study is to attempt to find indicators that could help predict how judges will decide these types of cases in the future. Due to the low number of such cases, this study looked at the issue from the broader perspective of conflicts between religion and public schools. Focusing on federal district and appellate courts, sixty-eight cases were selected, with 145 rulings from 121 …

Crafting Authenticity, Allison N. Schumacher
Theses and Dissertations
Authenticity is what we want from the world around us, from others, and crucially from ourselves and what we make. As it relates to graphic design, I define authenticity as a perceived match between form and purpose. For the designer, its quality is found in the process of simultaneously developing a concept and crafting the design/object.
