No. 02: Impacts Of Covid-19 Policy Measures On Migration And Food Security In Ecuador, Mercedes Eguiguren, Cheryl Martens
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
The COVID-19 pandemic had profound effects on Ecuador, exacerbated by pre-existing weaknesses in the public health system, economic austerity policies, and social inequalities. The reliance on containment measures, combined with insufficient social support, resulted in severe economic and social decline. Migrants, already a vulnerable group, were further marginalized during the pandemic, facing exclusion from social protection programs and increased food insecurity. This report examines the impacts of COVID-19 policy measures on migration and food security in Ecuador, focusing on urban contexts, particularly the capital city of Quito. The findings underscore the need for more integrated research and policy approaches that …
Harnessing The Therapeutic Effects Of Nature For Chronic Pain: A Role For Immersive Virtual Reality? A Narrative Review, Alexander Smith, Kayleigh Wyles, Sonia Medina Herandez, Sophie Clarke, Patricia Schofield, Sam Hughes
Harnessing The Therapeutic Effects Of Nature For Chronic Pain: A Role For Immersive Virtual Reality? A Narrative Review, Alexander Smith, Kayleigh Wyles, Sonia Medina Herandez, Sophie Clarke, Patricia Schofield, Sam Hughes
School of Psychology
Background and Objective There is a growing interest in the relationship between nature and pain relief. Evidence from environmental psychology, neuroscience and physiology-based studies point towards analgesic effects of nature being mediated through various cognitive, affective and/or autonomic factors. Being able to harness these therapeutic effects using immersive virtual reality (VR) could help to optimize and improve accessibility of nature-based environments as part of chronic pain management plans. In this narrative review, we present evidence supporting a new theoretical framework for nature-based analgesia and suggest ways for applying this through immersive VR. Databases and Data Treatment We provide an overview …
Shalom As Telos For Responsible Leaders, Kirk J. Nolan
Shalom As Telos For Responsible Leaders, Kirk J. Nolan
Journal of Religion and Business Ethics
Biblical portrayals of shalom offer two important contributions to responsible leadership theory and practice. Responsible leadership theory arises out of the demands that socially responsible businesses place on their leaders. As these businesses become more serious about their impacts on society and on nature, they come closer to the vision of shalom found in the biblical narrative. The first contribution of this vision is that it provides a telos for human flourishing, which orients the virtues necessary for responsible leadership. In addition, this vision contextualizes human attempts to build virtuous business communities by situating these attempts within the framework of …

Runaway Bride: Pieter Bruegel The Elder's "Dulle Griet" And The Netherlands' Hellish Union With Spain, K. Caralee Caudelle
Runaway Bride: Pieter Bruegel The Elder's "Dulle Griet" And The Netherlands' Hellish Union With Spain, K. Caralee Caudelle
All ETDs from UAB
Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Dulle Griet (1563) is a painting about which there is ample scholarship, but its prevailing interpretations do not fully consider the interplay between the main character, an aged woman convincingly identified as a virago, and the unusual depictions of housewives behind her. Reassessing the painting within the context of religious and civic imagery of its time, I argue that the main character, hitherto known as “Dulle Griet” or “Mad Meg,” is a conflation of religious and patriotic symbols, loosely personifying Antverpia, the Maid of Antwerp, one of the precursors to imagery developed during the Dutch Revolt …

Applying The 5ps Of Cultural Ecosystem Services For Urban Agricultural And Natural Resources Programming, Mayra I. Rodriguez Gonzalez
Applying The 5ps Of Cultural Ecosystem Services For Urban Agricultural And Natural Resources Programming, Mayra I. Rodriguez Gonzalez
Journal of Extension
Beyond adapting extension programs for an urban audience, Urban Extension strives to reach an underserved audience that hugely overlaps with marginalized populations. This means that cultural competence is crucial for successful program implementation. The following article outlines the application of the 5P framework of Cultural Ecosystem Services as a tool for laying out the base to a culturally competent extension program. Although originally intended for urban planners, when applied widely for program development it allows accounting for place, past, people, practices, and purposes in a simple manner without overlooking importance context pertaining the target audience.

Inservice Teachers' Experiences In Intercultural Competence Professional Development, Kathryn Mcclintock, Heng-Yu Ku
Inservice Teachers' Experiences In Intercultural Competence Professional Development, Kathryn Mcclintock, Heng-Yu Ku
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
The study explored eight inservice K-12 teacher participants’ experiences in intercultural competence activities and the cultural knowledge and self-knowledge they attained from participating in intercultural competence professional development. Data collection occurred through artifacts, reflection journals, and interview methods. The two themes that emerged for attaining cultural knowledge perceived by the teacher participants were (1) identifying commonalities and (2) understanding how the environment shaped them. The two themes that emerged for attaining self-knowledge perceived by the teacher participants were (1) identifying one’s values and principles and (2) recognizing cultural influences on biases. Finally, recommendations for integrating intercultural competence into teacher training …
