No. 29: Translocal Households, Rural-Urban Links And Migrant Food Security In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera, Maria Salamone Oct 2024

No. 29: Translocal Households, Rural-Urban Links And Migrant Food Security In South Africa, Jonathan Crush, Godfrey Tawodzera, Maria Salamone

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

This paper revisits the issue of rural-urban links in post-apartheid South Africa, challenging the assumption that the end of apartheid would lead to rapid urbanization and the dissolution of circular migration. Despite the abolition of influx controls and the significant increase in the urban population from 33% in 1980 to 55% in 2011 among black South Africans, rural-urban ties and flows have proven resilient. The persistence of circular migration is evident in the continuous flow of people, goods, and remittances between urban and rural areas. This paper draws on a survey of over 800 Eastern Cape migrants in Cape Town, …

Digital Twinning For Resilient Global Supply Chains: Three Case Studies, Gawon Yun, Douglas N. Hales, Leo Hong Oct 2024

Digital Twinning For Resilient Global Supply Chains: Three Case Studies, Gawon Yun, Douglas N. Hales, Leo Hong

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Global supply chains have vulnerabilities, and these escalate in crisis times like pandemics or wars. Digital twinning of supply chains can provide early alerts and timely interventions. We examined three companies in different industries using Digital Twin (DT) technology to improve their supply chain performance. We found that while DT successfully enhanced performance indicators, the dollar and time costs were significant, creating barriers to wider DT adoption. We conclude by outlining the positives and negatives of implementing Digital Twins in global supply chains.

Physiology Of Pe'a And Malu: Biocultural Case Studies Of Endocrine And Immune Responses To Samoan Tatau, Christopher D. Lynn, Tomasz Nowak, Courtney Manthey, Michael Muehlenbein

Pacific Journal of Health

Tattooing has become a prominent form of body modification worldwide since the 20th century, leading to a revival of traditional hand-tap techniques, especially those from Samoa. The Samoan traditional pe’a (male tattoo) and malu (female) are distinctive, as they are administered by hand-tap tools in open-air bungalows and are to be completed in a short period of time, usually 1-2 days for the malu and a week to a month for the pe’a. This study involved systematically collecting saliva samples from participants undergoing traditional Samoan tattooing practices facilitated by Sulu’ape Tatau in Apia, Samoa. The Sulu’ape Tatau lineage …

The Geopolitical Configuration Of Okinawa In Post-War Japan: Focusing On Tatsuhiro Ōshiro’S The Cocktail Party, Yeonhee Woo Oct 2024

The Geopolitical Configuration Of Okinawa In Post-War Japan: Focusing On Tatsuhiro Ōshiro’S The Cocktail Party, Yeonhee Woo

Kritika Kultura

Okinawa, located at the southernmost tip of Japan, has greater proximity to Taiwan than its home country, Japan, as well as a unique historical character. After being forcibly incorporated into Japan in 1879, the island was devastated by the Battle of Okinawa which was waged against Japan by the United States in 1945. After Japan was defeated in the Pacific War, Okinawa was separated from the mainland and held under the occupation of the US military. In particular, the 1960s was a time when the “return to the mainland” movement, which advocated a return to Japan after escaping from the …

The Importance Of Bearing Witness In Edwin Cameron’S Witness To Aids (2005), Oscar Ortega Montero Oct 2024

The Importance Of Bearing Witness In Edwin Cameron’S Witness To Aids (2005), Oscar Ortega Montero

Kritika Kultura

Edwin Cameron’s memoir Witness to AIDS (2005) was the first HIV/AIDS memoir published in South Africa in the midst of the worst years of the epidemic. The narrative discloses essential facts about his experience living with the virus. In this paper, I argue that Edwin Cameron’s intellectually savvy and powerful testimony opened up a widespread national debate on citizen participation in policy-decision making and public accountability in South Africa. My analysis revolves on the interplay between whiteness, privilege, and access to life-saving drugs in the on-going construction of democratic and transparent post-Apartheid South Africa. Edwin Cameron’s position of privilege as …

Rituals And Magic On The Transition Of Sacredness In Folk Religion In Central Vietnam, Dang Huu Nguyen Oct 2024

Rituals And Magic On The Transition Of Sacredness In Folk Religion In Central Vietnam, Dang Huu Nguyen

Kritika Kultura

This article examines the dynamics of sacredness in Central Vietnamese folk religion. It utilizes a qualitative approach, specifically ethnographic fieldwork and in-depth interviews in the community of Danang estuary in Central Vietnam, to study rituals and magic, specifically those involved in purifying, de-sanctifying, and re-sanctifying religious artifacts. The findings of this study demonstrate that the concept of sacredness is not fixed; rather, it continuously fluctuates between states of sanctification and de-sanctification. Additionally, the dynamics of the sacred is subject to change and is attributed with different values when transferred across cultural contexts. Based on these observations, this article emphasizes the …

A Workforce Development Team’S Reflections On Social Work Retention And Turnover In South-East London, Uk, Mark Taylor, Shalini Abrol, Sharon Frieslaar, Corlea Taylor

Journal of Social Care

Statutory children’s services in England experience a high turnover of social work staff. Workforce development teams from these services are seen as part of the solution to reduce the haemorrhaging of social workers. However, how do those working in these teams imagine the world of staff turnover? This paper presents the perspectives of three experienced social workers from a workforce development team in South-East London on staff churn and retention. Informed by a collective experience of over 80 years in social work practice, management and mentoring roles, Sharon, Shalini and Corlea reflect and speculate on two contrasting experiences of social …

Tree growth and longevity trade-offs fundamentally shape the terrestrial carbon balance. Yet, we lack a unified understanding of how such trade-offs vary across the world's forests. By mapping life history traits for a wide range of species across the Americas, we reveal considerable variation in life expectancies from 10 centimeters in diameter (ranging from 1.3 to 3195 years) and show that the pace of life for trees can be accurately classified into four demographic functional types. We found emergent patterns in the strength of trade-offs between growth and longevity across a temperature gradient. Furthermore, we show that the diversity of …

Cultural Imperialism In The Roman Empire: A Give And Take Relationship Between Imperial Rome And Provincial/External Cultures, Hailey Smith Oct 2024

Cultural Imperialism In The Roman Empire: A Give And Take Relationship Between Imperial Rome And Provincial/External Cultures, Hailey Smith

Venture: The University of Mississippi Undergraduate Research Journal

The Roman Empire is often credited with being highly culturally influential both in its time and in later cultural contexts. However, the cultural aspects of art, politics, militarism, etc. for which the Roman Empire is known are the result of interactions between the imperial regime and external entities. The history of the Roman Empire is well documented, but few historians have analyzed the role of conquered cultures and foreign parties on the cultural evolution of Rome. To address these overlooked dynamics between existing cultural groups and their influences on each other, I explore the concepts of ethnicity and framework provided …

Bridging The Atrocity Prevention Gap Between The International And The Local: Lessons Learned From Meso-Level Leadership In Ukraine And Syria, Kristina Hook, Jamie D. Wise

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This paper explores meso-level approaches to atrocity prevention that incorporate a wider array of local expertise at all stages, from early warning to transitional justice. Specifically, we treat meso-level approaches as encompassing local leadership and advocacy across bottom-up processes, grassroots efforts, victim-led activism, and civil society mobilization. We draw from two contemporary cases of mass atrocities, Ukraine and Syria, which exemplify such efforts, using primary interview data with meso-level actors. First, we examine atrocity risk early warning in Ukraine, where prescient local expertise at the meso-level failed to influence international responses, asking what went wrong and what more could be …

Examining The Relationship Between Ethnocentrism, Perspective-Taking And Cultural Competence In Medical-Surgical Nurses, Lori Ann Palmieri

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This descriptive correlational study explored the relationships between cultural competence, ethnocentrism, and perspective-taking in practicing medical-surgical nurses living in the United States (US). Participants (N=111) were recruited from the New Jersey Board of Nursing (NJBON) and from the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN). The survey consisted of three validated instruments a) the cultural competence assessment instrument (CCA-I); b) the generalized ethnocentrism scale (GENE); c) the perspective-taking (PT) subscale of the interpersonal reactivity index (IRI), and d) demographic profile questions. Data were collected via Qualtrics and analyzed with IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 28/29). Ethnocentrism and perspective-taking explained 30.2% of the variance …

Elements Of Mission Theology In Ukrainian Orthodox Discourse, Tetiana Havryliuk, Yuriy Chornomorets, Svitlana Shkil

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article analyzes the trends in the development of ideas of mission theology in modern Ukrainian Orthodox theology. It was noted that the ideas of mission theology have significant potential in building a new theological discourse that will effectively overcome the crisis of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. It is shown that considering the special modern socio-political situation in which the Church lives and works, Orthodox theology acquired certain Ukrainian features. It deepens the ideas of the theology of communication and Love; there is a turn to communication with the modern world; the need to involve every Orthodox person in the mission of …

Bodies Of Horror In Judges 19-21 And Evil Dead Ii (1987), Jennifer M. Matheny, Aaron Bohn Oct 2024

Bodies Of Horror In Judges 19-21 And Evil Dead Ii (1987), Jennifer M. Matheny, Aaron Bohn

Journal of Religion & Film

Sam Raimi's Evil Dead II (1987), a horror film, demonstrates key thematic parallels with Judges 19-21. Evil Dead IIidentifies with the film genres of “splatter horror” and “dark comedy” with a B-movie cult classic vibe. Placing the Bible’s body horror (Judges 19) and horror film in dialogue on their own terms creates an intertextual dialogue that can be fruitful when dealing with violent biblical texts that communicate an excess state of terror (Phyllis Trible). Through the lens of postbiblical intertextuality (Marianne Grohmann and Hyun Chul Paul Kim), this paper will explore thematic parallels and connections in conversation between Evil …

Televangelism And Religion In Star Trek V And Licence To Kill, Robert Revington Oct 2024

Televangelism And Religion In Star Trek V And Licence To Kill, Robert Revington

Journal of Religion & Film

In June 1989, both Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and the James Bond film Licence to Kill were released in theatres within days of each other. This study analyzes how story elements in both films were directly inspired by recent televangelist scandals in the United States. The Star Trek film was also intended to have a deeper examination of the nature of God and the Devil. Nonetheless, both films were also intended to appeal to a mass audience. To that end, these films' explorations of religious issues were watered down to avoid offending Christian denominations or churches (though not …

The Fight For Purity: Hiram Evans And The Second Ku Klux Klan, Ava Jackson Oct 2024

The Fight For Purity: Hiram Evans And The Second Ku Klux Klan, Ava Jackson

English: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The Klu Klux Klan of the 1920s, known as the second Klan, built its three to six million members quicker than any previous group. The Klan continued the traditions of earlier generations, including the notorious robes, masks, and racist attitudes toward African Americans. In addition, anti-Semitism and anti-Catholicism grew, which further increased animosity and reshaped what it meant to be a terrorist in America. Through the leadership of Hiram Wesley Evans, a small-practice dentist, who quickly rose in the ranks to later become Imperial Wizard of the Klan in 1922, the Klan was altered in a way never seen before. …
