I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young Jan 2025

I Can See A Future… Creative Ways To Talk About Climate Change, Georgia Young

MESM Major Papers

Though a majority of Americans accept climate change as a reality, most people are hesitant to discuss the issue. And the implications of climate silence have far-reaching effects, including less action on climate change. This project synthesizes recent research on climate change, climate silence, and climate action to create a workbook-style zine. This tool is meant to help people who are concerned about the changing climate have generative, deep conversations about this crisis. Through a literature review, a first-person interview, and centering inclusive science communication principles, I created I can see a future: Creative ways to talk about climate change. …

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca Jan 2025

The Green Advantage: An Analysis Of Open Access Publications At A Mid-Sized University, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Maria A. Barca

Library Publications

Introduction: The escalating cost of journals, loss of access to research results, and mandates by funding agencies favor Open Access (OA). The suggestion that OA publications are cited more than those behind paywalls should appeal to faculty where citations are critical for promotion and tenure. Further, the option to publish Green OA without cost would be advantageous to faculty who lack financial support for OA publications.

Methods: We used data from Scopus to analyze field weighted citation counts (FWCI) for OA publications over 20 years in terms of OA type, document type, subject area, and subject normalized impact factor.

Wonder No More: A Review Of Into Arabia, Brant A. Gardner Jan 2025

Wonder No More: A Review Of Into Arabia, Brant A. Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Into Arabia is a collected reprint of six articles. The first chapter reprints an article that first appeared in BYU Studies. The other five appeared in Interpreter. Both BYU Studies and Interpreter are peer-reviewed academic journals, which means that all these articles were examined and reviewed prior to publication. Thus, my review is more of a synopsis of the importance of each chapter rather than a detailed critique.

Perspectives On The Soteriological Problem Of Evil: Nuancing The “Universalist” Theologies Of Henri De Lubac And Joseph Smith, Timothy Gervais Jan 2025

Perspectives On The Soteriological Problem Of Evil: Nuancing The “Universalist” Theologies Of Henri De Lubac And Joseph Smith, Timothy Gervais

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Since the discovery of the new world by Christian European explorers during the age of discovery, the increasingly global community of the modern age has confronted Christian theologians with difficult soteriological questions. These questions have caused many Christian adherents to abandon conceptions of a uniquely Christian salvation in favor of theological positions of religious pluralism. Other Christian theologians have confronted these issues through creative inclusivist theological constructs that expand the offer of salvation to those who may not have professed Christianity in their mortal life. These inclusivist theologies are uniquely suited to address modern concerns about the salvation of non-believers …

Ritual And Ritualization In The Peony Pavilion, Caroline Young Jan 2025

Ritual And Ritualization In The Peony Pavilion, Caroline Young

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the functions of ritual in Tang Xianzu’s 湯顯祖 (1550-1616) The Peony Pavilion (1598). It moves beyond traditional scholarly focus on romantic love and supernatural elements to analyze how ritual in the play functions both as a mechanism of social confirmation and resistance, and as a means of emotional expression. Written during the late Ming dynasty, when Wang Yangming’s 王陽明 (1472-1529) School of Mind challenged Zhu Xi’s 朱熹 (1130-1200) philosophies on Neo-Confucianism, The Peony Pavilion shows Tang’s critique of Neo-Confucian ritual propriety through its characters’ diverse engagement with ritual. Drawing on theoretical frameworks from Catherine Bell’s concept of …

Introduction: Beyond Hollow Materialism, Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth, Zada Komara

Art Faculty Publications

This introduction to the special issue, “Transformative Approaches to Materiality in Appalachian Studies,” provides theoretical background and examples that demonstrate applications of new material culture and materiality theory to key Appalachian studies themes. It offers new directions for the study of material entanglement in social relationships by reviewing the history of material culture studies in the Appalachian context, fundamental theoretical propositions emerging from the “material turn” in social theory, and examples drawn from ethnographic and archaeological research into the patterns of use of material culture in the timber country of West Virginia and coalfields of eastern Kentucky. Finally, this introduction …

Lifelong Learning And Archaeological Field Schools, Ed Schortman, Pat Urban Jan 2025

Lifelong Learning And Archaeological Field Schools, Ed Schortman, Pat Urban

Four Valleys Archive Scholarship

Higher education inculcates in students an enduring curiosity about the world. Accomplishing this goal requires helping undergraduates recognize that learning is a social process occurring within multiple communities of practice. Each of these collectives provides different lenses through which aspects of reality are illuminated, none encompassing all there is to know about a subject. Students thus appreciate that learning is an open-ended processes driven by a curiosity that is never satisfied. Knowledge resulting from that process is forever being refined, a project to which undergraduates can contribute. Appreciating the many ways of knowing the world requires engaging meaningfully with these …

"I Wish I Knew That”: Understanding And Bridging The Gap Between Public Health, Stem, And The Cooperative Extensions National Framework For Health Equity And Well-Being, Brione Lockett, Lisa Krajecki

In his essay “The Creative Process” writer and activist James Baldwin notes, “It goes without saying . . . that if we understand ourselves better we would damage ourselves less” (Baldwin, 1985). This quotation reflects Baldwin’s viewpoint that often individuals knowing and learning about themselves and what impacts them (e.g., education, employment, social environments, policy) and their quality of life is compromised by the action of seeking to know others instead. This paper meets at the intersection of Baldwin’s profound words and the ways health equity and wellness conversations complement rather than compete with STEM fields. The National Framework for …

An Examination Of Donald Trump And Young Evangelical Voters, Kevin Finn Jan 2025

An Examination Of Donald Trump And Young Evangelical Voters, Kevin Finn

Honors Theses and Capstones

The relationship between Donald Trump and religious voters is often discussed, but much less attention has been directed to the connection between Trump and young voters, particularly young evangelicals. This paper attempts to provide the reasoning behind why despite his unconventional character, Trump maintains a strong base of support from young evangelical voters. After examining the theories of previous scholars, it hypothesizes that support is shaped by religious elites, who exploit the strong connection that young evangelicals have to their community. The argument is separated into three phases: first, that evangelical leaders and elites have proven to be consistently in …
