River Flowing Through: Lost River Cave And Its Community, Elizabeth Coleman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Lost River Cave and Valley is a popular tourist attraction in Bowling Green, Kentucky, that also holds historical significance and importance to the local community. The Cave and Valley have functioned as a business, place of leisure, green space, and place of work for over 200 years. This thesis will explore the different ways that humans and non-humans have worked together to create a sense of place in this natural space. This will be accomplished utilizing “assemblage” theory from the discipline of philosophy. These assemblages will be made up of oral history interviews completed in 1999, one from 2009, and …

Making A “Judicial Examination”: Credibility And Rationality In Clelia Duel Mosher’S Speech “The Relation Of Health To The Woman Movement”, Elisabeth Stevens Jan 2025

Making A “Judicial Examination”: Credibility And Rationality In Clelia Duel Mosher’S Speech “The Relation Of Health To The Woman Movement”, Elisabeth Stevens

University Honors Papers

At the turn of the 20th century, academics and laymen alike used scientific inquiry into the “biological realities" of the male and female body to explain women's lesser position in society. The scientific field was dominated by men who produced knowledge which seemed to 2 cement female inferiority. Thus, the woman movement of the time, working to improve women's social condition, encountered not only political and economic roadblocks to their efforts, but also an institutional barrier based on presumed fact. The women movement both violated social knowledge and the institution of science itself.

Perspectivism And Wicked Problems: Patterns In The Discovery Process Of Leibniz, Bohr, And Turing, Ernesto Diaz Jan 2025

Perspectivism And Wicked Problems: Patterns In The Discovery Process Of Leibniz, Bohr, And Turing, Ernesto Diaz

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Authored Dissertations and Theses

This research investigates fundamental patterns in how transformative scientific knowledge emerges and becomes established, examining three pivotal cases: Leibniz's development of calculus, Bohr's formulation of complementarity, and Turing's conceptualisation of computation and artificial intelligence. The study introduces the o-é-c model (Ouverture Ontologique - Épistémè Socialisante - Connaissance Éclairante) to explain how individual insights become integrated into collective knowledge through structured phases of development. Drawing on Minsky's conception of knowledge as mental models for problem-solving and Longino's social epistemology, the research demonstrates how wicked problems—those that resist formulation within existing frameworks—catalyse the creation of new knowledge domains. The model reveals how …

Waldorf Education: New Perspectives On A Holistic Approach, Martyn Rawson Jan 2025

Waldorf Education: New Perspectives On A Holistic Approach, Martyn Rawson

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This article outlines some of the core ideas underlying the practices of Waldorf education as re-envisioned by an experienced practitioner, as a contribution to the discussion about the educational implications of transpersonal psychology. It outlines a pedagogical anthropology that takes the spiritual dimension into account. It distinguishes between the lived body, the emergent psyche and the agentic Self as the spiritual core of being in the person. Learning is explained as a transformative process that involves the changing relationships to one’s own body, to others and to the world through which potentialities become abilities. The aim of the transformative education …

Faith, Fatherlands, And Fascism: A Warning, Sara Engels Jan 2025

Faith, Fatherlands, And Fascism: A Warning, Sara Engels

Theses & ETDs

Utilizing the definitions, characteristics, and enabling conditions provided by four experts of fascism who have collectively contributed over 150 years of scholarship to the field, this study assesses environmental conditions prior to elections, espoused party ideologies, policies enacted (and attempted) once in power, and the rhetoric employed by the leaders of movements in Hungary and the U.S., which have both been labelled as fascist, to determine whether such a description is fitting. Extensive analysis of speeches and policies in the two countries makes it clear that Hungary has developed a fascist government and state, albeit one that is not fully …

Between Repression And Revolution: Queer Resistance And The Fight For Change In Morocco, Nisreen Kalai Jan 2025

Between Repression And Revolution: Queer Resistance And The Fight For Change In Morocco, Nisreen Kalai

Theses & ETDs

This thesis explores the shifting dynamics of LGBTQ+ activism in Morocco, challenging the perception that queerness is foreign to Moroccan culture. It situates contemporary struggles within a broader historical context shaped by colonialism, Islamic conservatism, and today's culture. The legacy of French-imposed laws, particularly Article 489, continues to criminalize same-sex relationships and reinforce a culture of silence around queer existence. Despite this repression, LGBTQ+ individuals in Morocco are actively resisting, through grassroots organizing, digital platforms, feminist coalitions, and community-based care. The February 20th Movement marked a turning point, creating new spaces for expression and solidarity, even as queer voices remain …

Birth And Rebirth: The Fish In Mesoamerican Art And Its Implication On Stela 5, Izapa, Chiapas, Mexico, Diane E. Wirth

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

A revealing analysis of fish iconography in Mesoamerica, in relation to the ancestral couple on Stela 5, Izapa, Chiapas, Mexico, holds an unforeseen element that may reveal a key to the Tree of Life referred to in the Book of Mormon. This key is supported by Mesoamerican, Hebrew, and Egyptian traditions.

Breath, Body, And The Blank Page: An Autoethnographic Approach To Embodied Writing Practices In First-Year Writing, Kristen Garramone Hoffman Jan 2025

Breath, Body, And The Blank Page: An Autoethnographic Approach To Embodied Writing Practices In First-Year Writing, Kristen Garramone Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores how somatic awareness and trauma-informed pedagogies can be integrated into the teaching of writing. Drawing from autoethnography and pedagogical theory, it proposes that writing is not a purely cognitive act but a deeply embodied process, one shaped by the physiological and psychological dimensions of lived experience. Using autoethnography as both method and praxis, the study centers the author’s experiences of trauma, grief, and healing to investigate how body-based practices such as breathwork, visualization, and mindfulness can support writing, particularly for students navigating stress, anxiety, or disconnection from their academic identities. Chapter One situates the research within literature …

Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity In The Archives Of Enslavement, Gabriella Greco Jan 2025

Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity In The Archives Of Enslavement, Gabriella Greco

Theses and Dissertations

One of the key problems of the archive of enslavement, borne out of the violent erasure of enslaved identities, is the struggle to reconstruct and honor those lost identities. Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity in the Archives of Enslavement investigates postcolonial archival processes and the resulting documents to identify a spectrum of speculative literary genres that can be used to supplement traumatic archival erasures, often of female voices and identities, to further understand the power dynamics. To clarify, I use the term ‘speculative literature’ here to refer to a mode of literature that relies on the few fragments that may …

Let The Light Shine: Reclaiming Public Space Through Digital Projection, Katherine D. Lind Jan 2025

Let The Light Shine: Reclaiming Public Space Through Digital Projection, Katherine D. Lind

Communication Studies Faculty Works

Amid the racial uprisings of 2017 and 2020, digital projections emerged as a mode of protest contributing to the calls for removal of Confederate monuments. These digital projections, I argue, created a dialogue between the contested Confederate monuments (the past) and their contemporary surroundings (the present). By examining the digital projections that were cast upon the Albert Pike Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Robert E. Lee Monument in Richmond, Virginia, I demonstrate how they employed a palimpsest to facilitate discourse concerning public memorialization practices and to re-contextualize and reclaim contested sites into spaces for community engagement.

Adam Smith And Sympathetic Cosmopolitanism, Maria Pia Paganelli Jan 2025

Adam Smith And Sympathetic Cosmopolitanism, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

Is cosmopolitanism something to explain or is it the lack of cosmopolitanism that needs explaining? Is cosmopolitanism natural or something we need to try to achieve? Is cosmopolitanism an end result or a starting point? The answer depends on the anthropological assumptions one makes. If human beings are assumed to be isolated individuals, then cosmopolitanism is something to explain, something to be taught, a possible end result. But if human beings are assumed to be intrinsically and naturally social, then cosmopolitanism may be a starting point and what needs to be explained is its absence.

I suggest that for Adam …

On Certainty And Doubt: Islam And The Speculative Turn In Film And Media Historiography, Pardis Dabashi Jan 2025

On Certainty And Doubt: Islam And The Speculative Turn In Film And Media Historiography, Pardis Dabashi

Literatures in English Faculty Research and Scholarship

Through an examination of the Muslim call to prayer opening Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust (1991), this article examines epistemological questions concerning certainty and doubt generated by the speculative turn in Black feminist film and media historiography. Because of the deferred structure of Qur’ānic revelation, as well as the tradition of reporting and transcribing the sayings and doings of the Prophet Muhammad, Islam has a vantage on the notion of testimony that is helpful in understanding the kinds of faith necessitated by the imaginative reconstructions integral to Black feminist film history and the modes of critical utterance animating Black …
