Serious Music With Bea Witkin: An Upper West Side Audio Walk, Megan Hattie Stahl Jan 2025

Serious Music With Bea Witkin: An Upper West Side Audio Walk, Megan Hattie Stahl

Theses and Dissertations

Serious Music with Bea Witkin is a site-specific audio walk on New York City’s Upper West Side produced by Megan Hattie Stahl. This immersive, musical documentary explores and extends the life and work of composer Beatrice Witkin (1916-1990). Across four stationary chapters and three walking interludes, participants follow a one-mile route from Riverside Park to Straus Park by way of Witkin’s longtime residence on West End Avenue. Through guided narration, archival music, interviews and recordings of contemporary musicians sight-reading a 1985 string quartet piece by Witkin, Serious Music invites listeners to consider where music begins and ends.

Witkin, who graduated …

Activism Within The Music And Recorded Sound Archive, Julius Tanner

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the integration of applied ethnomusicology within the recorded sound archive of the New York Public Library. The process of repatriating recorded sound through community engagement lead to the development and eventual reparative work of outdated subject headings and other descriptive language within the archive. This thesis also explores how cultural preservation of similar non-physical fields such as naming conventions within linguistics and the development of gastronationalism combats globalization and ultimately colonization.

For Church Or People: The History Of Land Dispute In Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province From The Perspective Of Tana' Ai Community, Desmiwati Desmiwati, Suraya Afiff, Edwin Martin, Surati Surati, Kresno Agus Hendarto, Rini Astuti

Forest and Society

This study employs a political ecology approach to analyze the dynamics of land ownership in Indonesia, focusing on the Tana' Ai community in Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara province. We argue that agrarian change is driven by external actors, including private companies that religious institutions and government agencies own. The latter often impose their will on indigenous populations, which can result in land conflicts, marginalization, and uneven capital accumulation. In particular, the church's status as a land use permit holder from the colonial era complicates the Tana' Ai ethnic community's ability to assert its ancestral land rights. To understand this …

Historical Land Use And Land Cover Change Of The Lake Tempe Region: A Multi-Source Data Landscape Reconstruction, Syahruddin Mansyur, Nur Ihsan Djindar, Wasita Wasita, Imam Hindarto, Nani Somba, Hasrianti Hasrianti, Moh. Ali Fadillah, Hamka Naping, Sofyan Setia Budi

Forest and Society

Lake Tempe, situated in the Wajo Regency, is an ancient lake in Indonesia that plays a crucial role in the socio-historical evolution of Southern Sulawesi. The Lontara manuscript, a significant source of regional history, highlights Lake Tempe as a vital resource for adjacent communities. Contemporary narratives of Lake Tempe, however, are overshadowed by recurrent flooding attributed to accelerated sedimentation leading to lake shallowing, which impedes its capacity to manage the inflow from tributary rivers. This study aims to offer a historical perspective by reconstructing the landscape and detailing the evolution of land use and land cover (LU/LC) in the Lake …

Intra-Active 'World-Making': Hope,Education, Utopias And Potentialeco-Socially Just Futures, Rosamonde Birch Jan 2025

Intra-Active 'World-Making': Hope,Education, Utopias And Potentialeco-Socially Just Futures, Rosamonde Birch

Plymouth Interdisciplinary Education Open Journal

The paper is an edited extract from an MA Education Dissertation that researched the discernment of hope with young people through the Philosophy for/with Children (P4wC) process. Through the paper the role of hope in the utopian project of education is considered in rapport with the ethico-onto-epistem-ology of Agential Realism (Barad, 2007) and how education is in relationship to how we imagine and create futures as collaborative ‘world-making’ communities. The paper begins by conceptualising hope through historical and contemporary theory and debate, whilst suggesting hope is a Living Narrative of ‘openings’ and future potentials. Through exploring critical education theory (Freire, …

The Relationship Between Lower-Body Flexibility And Running Performance In A Half Marathon Downhill Running Event, Logan Petty, Marcus M. Lawrence Jan 2025

The Relationship Between Lower-Body Flexibility And Running Performance In A Half Marathon Downhill Running Event, Logan Petty, Marcus M. Lawrence

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 18(3): 1-12, 2025. Although previous studies examining treadmill or relatively flat overground running events have found relationships for running performance and flexibility, no study has examined these outcomes during downhill events, including between sexes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between lower body flexibility and running performance in recreational adult male and female distance runners competing in a downhill half marathon race. Recreational (n=11 male, n=19 female) adult distance runners completed this study. On the day prior to the race, participants performed a standardized warm-up, …

Choosing Schools In Crown Heights, Brooklyn: An Autoethnographic Narrative Study Of Middle-Class Gentry Parents, Trisha Nelson-Gill Jan 2025

Choosing Schools In Crown Heights, Brooklyn: An Autoethnographic Narrative Study Of Middle-Class Gentry Parents, Trisha Nelson-Gill

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

This study explored how the cultural context of school choice in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, intersects with race, migration, identity, and the ongoing impact of gentrification. Through a combination of narrative interviews and autoethnographic reflection, the research examined how parents, particularly those from middle-class backgrounds, make educational decisions within a rapidly changing urban landscape. Findings revealed that while many families value racial and economic diversity in theory, decisions are often shaped by fears of academic underperformance, social exclusion, and neighborhood displacement. Some participants reflected an immigrant lens rooted in survival, stability, and cultural preservation, while others articulated tensions between ideals of …

The Morris Intercultural Education Initiative: A Decade Of Advancing Democracy Through Community-Engaged Learning In The Rural Midwest, Cristina Ortiz, Tammy Berberi, Thomas Genova, Windy Roberts

Anthropology Publications

While ethnoracial diversity is associated with metropolitan areas in the popular imagination, Latinx people have been moving increasingly into rural spaces during this century. Rural communities often have less infrastructure to adapt to changing linguistic and intercultural circumstances than do their urban counterparts. Following a community needs and assets assessment, the Morris Intercultural Education Initiative (MIEI) was founded in 2013 as a collaboration between the University of Minnesota Morris Clifford J. Benson Center for Community Partnerships, the local Latinx population, and the area school district to address disparities in literacy and academic outcomes and to promote community integration in West …

West Central Minnesota Regional Food Assessment, Ed Brands, Daniel Jahngurske, Allison Koos, Kat Kraemer, Argie Manolis, Mikayla Morris, Isabel Olson, Cristina Ortiz, Annabelle Scafe

Center for Small Towns

This project documents food access, barriers, production, and suggestions for improvement in the food system across a largely agricultural five-county (Douglas, Grant, Pope, Stevens, and Traverse) region in West-Central Minnesota. A variety of methods, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups, were used to gather data. Secondary (e.g., US Census, USDA Census of Agriculture) and historical (e.g., grocery store directories) data were also used in this project.

Approximately half of household food security survey respondents (N= 283) had in the last year at least worried about there not being enough money for food in their household. Respondents experiencing food insecurity were …

How Pentecostals Living In The United States Experience, Interpret, And Respond To Depression, Robert Mcbain Jan 2025

How Pentecostals Living In The United States Experience, Interpret, And Respond To Depression, Robert Mcbain

College of Theology and Ministry Dissertations, Projects, & Theses

The prevalence of depression in society underscores the need for awareness and support, particularly within Pentecostal communities, where depression remains underexplored. While studies suggest how the Christian context shapes depression, the literature lacks depth about the relationship between Pentecostalism and depression. This gap risks fostering misconceptions, marginalizing sufferers, and allowing dominant voices to impose stigmatizing interpretations that discourage external help and reinforce unrealistic norms. These repercussions emphasize the need to research the relationship between Pentecostalism and depression to address stigma, create supportive environments, and ensure that sufferers retain ownership of their mental health narratives. This dissertation contributes to this need …
