The Latter-Day Saint Indian Placement Program: An Examination Through An Experiential Lens, Quinn Elise Christiansen Jan 2025

The Latter-Day Saint Indian Placement Program: An Examination Through An Experiential Lens, Quinn Elise Christiansen

Theses and Dissertations

The Indian Placement Program, operated by the LDS Church from around 1947 to 2000, was influenced by the Church's belief in a connection between Native Americans to a Book of Mormon group known as the Lamanites. This group held a special status within the LDS Church because of their believed Israelite heritage as well as a prophecy promising their conversion in the last days. Spencer W. Kimball, motivated by both personal goals and his authority within the LDS Church, expanded on a successful experience of a young Native girl, Helen John, growing it into the broader Indian Placement Program. This …

Understanding stakeholders' participation in community forest management through a 30-year bibliometric analysis is essential for achieving historical insights, deciding conflicts, and discussing global forest landscape topics. The data was obtained from the Scopus database. Analysis of references with 808 publications and an annual publication growth rate of 6.49% (1981 – 2023) was used to …

Urban Security And The Crisis Of Values In A Risk Society: Elements For Reflection And Research, Bahamou Abdelilah, Abdelghani Chafik Jan 2025

Urban Security And The Crisis Of Values In A Risk Society: Elements For Reflection And Research, Bahamou Abdelilah, Abdelghani Chafik

Journal of Maya Heritage

Abstract: Urban security has become one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, shaped by the complexities of modern urban life. As cities grow and evolve, they face unprecedented security challenges that transcend traditional notions of crime prevention. These challenges encompass social, cultural, economic, and psychological dimensions, deeply intertwined with societal transformations.

In the context of what sociologist Ulrich Beck refers to as the "risk society," rapid globalization, technological advancement, and cultural diffusion have disrupted traditional social values. This disruption has created environments of uncertainty and fear, where mutual trust and social cohesion are eroded. As Émile Durkheim …

Improving Student Hunger: An Exploration Of Aggravated Hunger Within Food Justice At Seattle University, Annie M. Dyer Gordon Jan 2025

Improving Student Hunger: An Exploration Of Aggravated Hunger Within Food Justice At Seattle University, Annie M. Dyer Gordon

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

This paper provides insight into the nuances and complexities of food secu- rity at a small, private, urban university. Research questions included an interest in expanding knowledge around the relationship between stigma related to food insecurity and food pantry utilization within the first year of a food pantry service on campus. Five students of the university who had all previously utilized the food pantry service on campus participated in qualitative interviews that were openly coded for themes and conducted from within a critical discourse lens. Findings in- dicated a differentiation between food insecurity and stress aggravated hunger. Ag- gravated hunger, …

Addressing Food Insecurity Beyond Food Pantries, Steffi N. Huynh Jan 2025

Addressing Food Insecurity Beyond Food Pantries, Steffi N. Huynh

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

The issue of food insecurity is becoming more prevalent among college students. To address food insecurity at Seattle University, the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Seattle University recently opened a food pantry on campus. In order to better understand the level of food insecurity among Seattle University students, this research project will conduct a quantitative study on students who have utilized the food pantry. The literature review implied that while food pantries are an effective short-term solution, college institutions should consider financial literacy as a protective method against food insecurity. Additionally, the literature review suggested that practices which enhance students’ …

Audiotactile Music Theory And Jazz Education: Historical And Pedagogical Perspectives, Stéphane Audard Jan 2025

Audiotactile Music Theory And Jazz Education: Historical And Pedagogical Perspectives, Stéphane Audard

The IASJ Journal of Applied Jazz Research

The Audiotactile Music Theory offers new perspectives for considering the issues associated with the institutionalization of jazz education and the gradual transition from informal transmission situations to formalized curricula. The aim of this article is to show how certain central the concepts of the ‘Audiotactile Music Theory’ can be used in a dual historical and pedagogical perspective, to overcome certain dichotomies that structure discourses on jazz teaching at different times: written/oral, formal/informal and art/popular music. The Audiotactile Music Theory also allows us to question the place of jazz in music teaching institutions today, and our own pedagogical practice.

Forest and Society

Amid global efforts to find minerals for renewable energy, social-environmental concerns related to mineral extraction are still ongoing. Various agreements at the global level are calling for the renewable energies market to uphold principles of sustainability throughout the entire supply chain, including raw materials extraction, to protect the integrity and objectives of the industry. Importantly, such action must extend beyond the narrow parameters of environmental management to inclusively consider impacts on community wellbeing as well. This article evaluates concerns around land and spring conversion in manganese mining operations in Manggarai, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara Province, NTT. The study is critical …

Resurrection In The Regensburg Pendant: Materials And Iconography, Devotional Object As Sacred Jewelry, Margarita Benacerraf

The Regensburg butterfly (1310-1320), an exquisitely crafted reliquary pendant, was found in the head of a fourteenth-century crucifix in 1991. The locket’s butterfly shape—and the ways in which the butterfly serves as a metaphor for Christ’s redemption—remains a fascinating window into late medieval Christianity and devotional practices in the medieval world.

Using Spatial Network Analysis To Explore Migration Of Extended Families In Historical Research, Rock Miller Jan 2025

Using Spatial Network Analysis To Explore Migration Of Extended Families In Historical Research, Rock Miller

Theses and Dissertations

This project proposes a geoinformatics approach for understanding the migration of extended families in historical contexts. It uses full-count longitudinal census data (developed by the Minnesota Population Center) and graph methods to define multi-generational extended family relationships and to model the locational structures of these families as a spatial network. Graph algorithms and mapping methods are used to interrogate these structures as reflections of the patterns of family outmigration and extension over time. The study is based on a set of extended families resident in a 15-county study area in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky in 1870, and their evolution …
