Communication In Stormwater Utility Fees Across Michigan, Hailey Olson Apr 2019

Communication In Stormwater Utility Fees Across Michigan, Hailey Olson

Honors Theses

Stormwater Utilities (SWU) ordinances are gaining wide popularity in municipalities throughout the Great Lakes region of the United States. A SWU creates a fund to maintain and update stormwater infrastructure, which in turn helps to reduce destructive flooding, and also results in higher quality waterways. This study examines two SWUFs in the State of Michigan: one in the City of Jackson (COJ), which implemented a SWUF in 2011; and the second in the City of Ann Arbor (COAA), which implemented its SWUF in 1984. These two case studies offer important contrasts and lessons. For instance, as a result of resident …

What They Carried: An Archaeological Analysis Of Artifacts Found At Fort Steuben, Sam Foresha

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

The word “frontier” brings to mind certain connotations. The American public might think of Davy Crockett and his trademark coonskin cap, or of what came to be known as the Indian Wars as Americans pushed farther and farther west, conquering the rivers, plains, and mountains that lay just beyond colonial reach. But what was a frontier fort really like at the turn of the 19th Century? This paper explores that question through the study of archaeological artifacts left behind by the inhabitants of Fort Steuben. The fort, constructed in 1787, in what is now Steubenville, Ohio, was home to early …

Implementation Of Curbside Recycling, Samantha Kelley Apr 2019

Implementation Of Curbside Recycling, Samantha Kelley

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

My project is on the program of curbside recycling in Huntington, WV. Recycling came into play around the 1970s when reduce reuse recycle was introduced, since then many laws and implements have been created, some successful, and others not so much. There is a lot of research on recycling and some on curbside recycling but not much on the process of what it takes to implement the program. There have been bans that do not allow our recyclables to go where it once went, many questions to if it even gets recycled, and the education of how to recycle. In …

Graeco-Egyptian Papyrology, Michelle Young

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

This research examines a Graeco-Egyptian papyrus in the MU ethnographic collection. The research involved a personal visit to the University of Cincinnati where the manuscript was authenticated, restored, and translated by Dr. Peter Van Minnen. Dated to ca. the 5th Century of the early Byzantine Period, this papyrus originated in the Herakleopolite nome of Egypt, an area which was under the control of Constantinople. This capstone is an endeavor to provide a contextual background, both the economic and social characteristics of the community, as well as the political world at the time. The manuscript provides a list of names, the …

Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas Apr 2019

Solar Minimum Cycles And Historical Events, David Lucas

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Solar Minimum cycles and historical events

The catastrophic events of the late Holocene Era followed a cyclical pattern of Solar Minimum activity and described by ancient people in literature. Ancient literature documenting catastrophe is often unclear with catastrophic events mixed between fantasy and non-fiction, and consigned to mythology.

This project will demonstrate that environmental cycles impacting ancient civilizations were a result of cyclical patterns of Solar Minimum activity. Cyclical solar activity is historically observable, with warm periods lasting 540 years and cool periods lasting 400 years. The significance of the Solar Minimum activity occurrence shows patterns of civilization rise and …

Stigmatized Suspicion: The Who, What, And Why Of Political Conspiracy Theory, Katie Tennant Apr 2019

Stigmatized Suspicion: The Who, What, And Why Of Political Conspiracy Theory, Katie Tennant

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Political conspiracy theories have been ingrained in American culture since the country’s birth. People have long distrusted government, central authority, and other institutional bodies of power. This capstone research project examines this long-standing distrust in relation to conspiracy theories and the social implications intertwined with such “uncommon” beliefs. This study is conducted through one-on-one interviews with students enrolled in a political conspiracies course at Marshall University, a group containing both believers and non-believers. An additional method of the study is a Qualtrics survey available to all enrolled students of Marshall University. The combination of interviews and survey responses will aid …

Do You See Yourself? The Effects Of Cultural Binaries Within Fantasy Young Adult Literature, Serena Holcomb Apr 2019

Do You See Yourself? The Effects Of Cultural Binaries Within Fantasy Young Adult Literature, Serena Holcomb

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Teenage years are critical for identity formation. Young adult literature is a form in which teenagers use to help form identities through relating with characters and situations. It is important to have literature available to teenagers that is relatable to a wide audience so that all young adults can find novels that they feel represented by. This study will be looking into the cultural binaries that could limit representation in fantasy young adult literature, such as white/other, abled/disabled, female/male. In this way, people can be aware of what is hindering or enabling, depending on our results, wide representation of different …

Queering Relationships, Ian Clark Apr 2019

Queering Relationships, Ian Clark

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

More research exists on LGBTQ+ populations than ever before, and research has been done on people in polyamorous relationships, but very little research exists on LGBTQ+ people and the way their sexuality/ gender identities influence their relationship dynamics (if they do at all). The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a link between sexuality and gender identity and an individual’s likelihood to pursue non-monogamous or polyamorous relationship dynamics. Participants were recruited through word of mouth and from online forums. The participants fully consented either online or in person for the survey or interview process, respectively. The …

Spatial Variation In Faunal Remains At 48pa551, A Middle Plains Archaic Period Archaeological Site In The Sunlight Basin, Wy, Kaylen E. Gehrke

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

The archaeological site, 48PA551, is located in the Sunlight Basin near Cody, Wyoming and dates to the Middle Plains Archaic period (about 4000 years ago). New research suggests that the site can shed a light onto people of the past and how they used their landscape. The previous inhabitants of this landscape left behind many faunal remains (animal bones) resulting from subsistence practices. In this project the faunal data will be analyzed to find spatial patterns and try to predict how certain areas of the site were being used. I spent 3 weeks this summer at this site digging up …

How Epidemiological Transitions Affect Mortuary Ritual: A Study Of Infant Burials In The Missoula City Cemetery, Hannah W. Pepprock Apr 2019

How Epidemiological Transitions Affect Mortuary Ritual: A Study Of Infant Burials In The Missoula City Cemetery, Hannah W. Pepprock

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Mortuary populations are often replete with two types of individuals: the very old and the very young. Our interpretation of the archaeological record has the tendency to disregard these two populations, perhaps because we assume their positions in society are of little value in death, or simply because we do not understand the mortuary ritual afforded to them. The purpose of this paper is to examine the mortuary ritual afforded to a select cohort of individuals interred at the Missoula City Cemetery and to interpret their burials in comparison to epidemiological shifts in Missoula, Montana during a select time frame. …

A Collection Of Masses Or: Weaving A World Recalled (A Collage Of Things Once Seen), Max Dymond Bartsch

Art

“A Collection of Masses” serves as an introspective look at the visual inspiration and synthesis of a creative childhood, lifestyle, and culture. The writing serves as a personal history, detailing significant artists and works and the ways they served as influences. I was born into a family of artists. I grew up watching my mother paint and lived in a domestic space with art studio pockets throughout it. In our household we always made things and I find my working method most absorbed in that act of creativity and process. My masters thesis body of work revolves around system relationships …

Aging And Identity In The Landscape Of The Mega-Casino, Joy Ciofi Apr 2019

Aging And Identity In The Landscape Of The Mega-Casino, Joy Ciofi

Doctoral Dissertations

Casino gambling is becoming an increasingly popular activity among retirees in the surrounding communities. This project presents the results of two years of ethnographic fieldwork (2015-2017) with senior gamblers who regularly visit two of the United States’ largest mega-casino complexes. Although this form of recreation has generated significant public concern, I argue that the overwhelming majority of older adult gamblers do so responsibly, and also receive many benefits from their casino experiences. The abundance and variety of activities within these massive, all-inclusive facilities provides elderly and retired guests with the opportunity to make plans, socialize, and stay mentally and physically …

Artificial Intelligence In The Context Of Human Consciousness, Hannah Defries Apr 2019

Artificial Intelligence In The Context Of Human Consciousness, Hannah Defries

Senior Honors Theses

Artificial intelligence (AI) can be defined as the ability of a machine to learn and make decisions based on acquired information. AI’s development has incited rampant public speculation regarding the singularity theory: a futuristic phase in which intelligent machines are capable of creating increasingly intelligent systems. Its implications, combined with the close relationship between humanity and their machines, make achieving understanding both natural and artificial intelligence imperative. Researchers are continuing to discover natural processes responsible for essential human skills like decision-making, understanding language, and performing multiple processes simultaneously. Artificial intelligence attempts to simulate these functions through techniques like artificial neural …

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

"The recent reframing of the Visual Anthropology section in American Anthropologist was motivated by a sense that new technologies have democratizing power and that through multimodal forms we can address a shift toward engagement and collaboration in anthropological research (Collins, Durington, and Gill 2017). Our purpose in this essay is to engage and expand the discussion raised by Samuel Collins, Matthew Durington, and Harjant Gill in their 2017 article 'Multimodal Anthropology: An Invitation,' which has been widely cited and has helped to inspire a range of new projects in anthropology that do not prioritize text. Although the idea of multimodal …
