For The Culture: The Importance Of A Critical Social Theory Within The Music Education Classroom, Brianna Thomas
For The Culture: The Importance Of A Critical Social Theory Within The Music Education Classroom, Brianna Thomas
Senior Honors Theses
This paper will analyze the history of music education in the United States and discuss how the music classroom can contribute to and dismantle social inequalities including social class, gender, and race. Class effects music education by creating barriers to necessary resources and opportunities as a result of economic positions.[1] Gender is the second focus because music has historically been a male-dominated profession. As a result, many textbooks and curriculum highlight the achievements of men while erasing the contributions of women which has taught women to devalue their own work.[2] The last focus is race. While the arts …

Anthropology Embedded In Worldview Studies: Modernity’S Failure And The Response Of Christian Philosophy Of Life In A Postmodern Age Of Expressivism, Nathan Sexten
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis examines two divergent streams of thought in Christian philosophy of life represented by the works of Francis Schaeffer and James K. A. Smith in an effort to help Christians live in a postmodern culture. Schaeffer and Smith ultimately address differing, but complementary, realms of anthropology and the human experience. To see how these two authors might complement each other effectively, this thesis will analyze each author’s work and then explore whether or not the application of Smith's liturgical anthropology and utilization of phenomenology can improve Schaeffer’s system of thought and the worldview concept.
Silangan Rising: Crafting The Filipino Self And The Other In The Diaspora, Jon G. Malek
Silangan Rising: Crafting The Filipino Self And The Other In The Diaspora, Jon G. Malek
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle examines the newspaper Silangan, published in Winnipeg, Canada, from February 1977 to July 1982, to analyze the negotiation of Filipino identity in the diaspora. Over its six-year run, the columns in this newspaper dealt with issues of cultural maintenance, the importance of Filipino heritage, and political engagement in their adoptive homeland. A critical dialogue argued in support of certain aspects of life from the Philippines, such as extravagant pageantry and corrupt political practices. In discursively forming a Filipino Self, this ethnic newspaper created a number of Others, the most startling of which was the (transgressing) national Filipino.KEYWORDS: FILIPINO DIASPORA …
Euromodernity's Undertone: On Reconceptualizing Political Speech, Derefe Chevannes
Euromodernity's Undertone: On Reconceptualizing Political Speech, Derefe Chevannes
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation contends speech is indispensable to politics. It begins with Aristotle, whose conception of political speech grounds our modern understanding. I argue the Aristotelian position is colonizing insofar as it essentializes speech as sound. The consequence is that speech becomes phonocentric, privileging a particular mode of communication. This raises the issue of Deaf subjects who engage politics in non-phonocentric ways. That is, their speech is seen in what I contend is a visual vernacular. Subsequently, I turn to the issue of race. If Deaf subjects raise questions about what it means to speak, Black subjects, who speak audibly and …

Political Conjuncture And Scholarly Disjunctures: Reflections On Studies Of The Philippine State Under Marcos, Jr. Aguilar
Political Conjuncture And Scholarly Disjunctures: Reflections On Studies Of The Philippine State Under Marcos, Jr. Aguilar
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
This professorial address contends that a scholarly, systematic, and impartial study of Marcos’s authoritarian rule is necessary, given the highly politicized interpretations of the past bequeathed to younger generations through textbooks and social media as well as the Philippine academic community’s general inability to analyze the defunct regime and to influence public discourse and shape public history. Social scientists must tap new sources of information, such as the Marcos Papers, to produce truthful and nuanced narratives of the past, even as they must endeavor to understand the Marcosian social fantasy and the sources of Filipino authoritarianism, which can illumine both …
Leveraging Neo-Localism For Experience Innovation: A Case Study Of An Urban Park And Entertainment Venue, Lori J. Sipe
Leveraging Neo-Localism For Experience Innovation: A Case Study Of An Urban Park And Entertainment Venue, Lori J. Sipe
Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies
In the past decade, spending on experiences relative to other types of consumer spending has increased dramatically. Companies with an experience economy mindset focus on differentiation as opposed to standardization and rely on innovation activities for growth. This design research project examined how an urban park and entertainment venue leveraged its unique brand and core experience to design and innovate memorable guest experiences. The Quartyard study integrated key concepts of experience economy logic and memorable tourism experiences with principles of human centered design. Interviews were conducted with key stakeholders to include the architects, general manager, members of the local business …
Summary Of Exploring A Three-Dimensional Narrative Medium: The Theme Park As “De Sprookjessprokkelaar,” The Gatherer And Teller Of Stories, Carissa Baker
Journal of Themed Experience and Attractions Studies
This paper presents a summary of the author’s doctoral dissertation, which examines the pervasiveness of storytelling in theme parks and establishes the theme park as a distinct narrative medium. It traces the characteristics of theme park storytelling, how it has changed over time, and what makes the medium unique. This was accomplished using a mixed methods approach drawing data from interviews with creative professionals, archival research, fieldwork, and an analysis of more than eight hundred narrative attractions. The survey of narrative attractions revealed the most common narrative expressions to be dark rides and stage shows. Source material tends to be …
An Interesting Mix: The Possibility That Well-Being And A Lack Of Well-Being Can Be Experienced Simultaneously, Karin Sperber
An Interesting Mix: The Possibility That Well-Being And A Lack Of Well-Being Can Be Experienced Simultaneously, Karin Sperber
Proceedings of GREAT Day
Many sociological scholars (e.g. Derné 2009) report that well-being consists of an enduring sense of life satisfaction. This definition neglects the possibility that a person can experience well-being and a lack of well-being simultaneously, allowing for well-being to be more mixed. Fifteen students at SUNY Geneseo conducted two qualitative in-depth interviews each, discussing well-being and people’s experiences of well-being. After analysis of the data, I found that the simultaneous experience of well-being and a lack of well-being is possible.

Asaba, Pull! A Construction From An African Fence, Rachel Svenson
Proceedings of GREAT Day
This is a tour of a construction project: the assembly of a 250- meter chain link fence in Penjem, Gambia, by me, a young American woman, along with seven inexperienced U.S. volunteers and four Gambian men. It’s also a tour of the construction of a trans-continental story. In this project I examine not only what happened at the fence but also how the travel experience transformed, and why this evolution matters in an American woman’s project of culture shock and reflection. The result, Asaba, Pull!, explores the power as well as the limits of a story as translation and representation …

Survival Strategies: A Study Of Working Families In New York City, Kafui Gozey
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
The main focus for this project was to find out how working families survive life in New York City which is known to be one of the most expensive places to live on earth. In effort to find answers to this, I visited the city for a period of two weeks to observe the lives of locals and also to interact with them. After days of interactions and gathering information, it was evident that there is a huge population of working families in New York who struggle to make ends meet. It was also made clear that these families do …

Mothers' Interpretations Of Their Children's Behavior During Mother-Child Interaction, Robin Remsburg
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to gain understanding about mothers' motivations, intentions, and the meaning they ascribe to their children's behavior by exploring and describing mothers' interpretations of their children's behavior during interaction and how it impacts on mother-child interaction. Mothers' interpretations of their children's behavior were examined using qualitative research methodology. A grounded theory approach was used to collect, code, and analyze data with a goal to generate theoretical statements regarding the contribution of mothers' interpretations of their children's behaviors during mother-child interaction.

Misreading Hitchcock: Masked Signs In Young And Innocent, Harry Sanderson
Misreading Hitchcock: Masked Signs In Young And Innocent, Harry Sanderson
Cinesthesia
Despite his fame, many of Alfred Hitchcock's films are given insufficient attention as texts, particularly in the field of theoretical criticism. Young & Innocent (1937) is one such neglected work. The retroactive study of Alfred Hitchcock in both structuralist and post-structuralist discourse is an emerging field, following the criticism of Raymond Bellour. Here, I analyse the protagonists of Hitchcock's film within the semiotic framework developed by Barbara Johnson. I discuss the framing of characters beneath semiotic 'masks', making close reference to the models of Ferdinand de Saussure, C.S Peirce, and Jacques Lacan. I establish a dichotomy between structuralist and post-structuralist …

My Husband Will Love Me More If I Give Birth To More Children: Rural Women’S Perceptions And Beliefs On Family Planning Services Utilization In A Low Resource Setting, Agnes Msoka, Eunice Pallangyo, Sharon Brownie, Eleanor Holroyd
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Introduction: Responsibility for family planning in low resource settings is almost solely delegated to women, with very low male involvement. This study investigated rural Tanzanian women’s perceptions and cultural beliefs of the barriers to family planning services utilization.
Methods: This study used a qualitative descriptive approach drawing on four group discussions with 20 purposively selected married women with two or more children. The study followed COREQ guidelines for reporting qualitative studies. Data were collected from participants at four health facilities in Bagamoyo and Kisarawe districts in Pwani, Tanzania.
Results: Participants’ occupations included housewives, small-scale farmers, and entrepreneurs. Most women were …

Taxonomy And The History Of Science: A Critical Analysis Of Four Historic Publications, Christopher M. Rogers
Taxonomy And The History Of Science: A Critical Analysis Of Four Historic Publications, Christopher M. Rogers
KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses
The history of taxonomy is not usually taught in modern biology classes, but it is necessary to understand the history of classification and science as a whole in order to better understand the processes of classification and thinking that are commonly taught at the college level. Through the exploration of the difficulties of publishing, Linnaeus' Species Plantarum, and three pre-Linnaean works from Pliny the Elder, Nehemiah Grew, and Rembert Dodoens, I have found that the history of the sciences has been largely distorted. The distortion appears to be of many factors, including the replacement of ideas, censorship from scholarly …
