Algorithmic Discrimination Is An Information Problem, Ignacio N. Cofone Aug 2019

Algorithmic Discrimination Is An Information Problem, Ignacio N. Cofone

UC Law Journal

While algorithmic decision-making has proven to be a challenge for traditional antidiscrimination law, there is an opportunity to regulate algorithms through the information that they are fed. But blocking information about protected categories will rarely protect these groups effectively because other information will act as proxies. To avoid disparate treatment, the protected category attributes cannot be considered; but to avoid disparate impact, they must be considered. This leads to a paradox in regulating information to prevent algorithmic discrimination. This Article addresses this problem. It suggests that, instead of ineffectively blocking or passively allowing attributes in training data, we should modify …

Toxic Chemical Governance Failure In The United States: Key Lessons And Paths Forward, Ariana M. Chiapella, Zbigniew Grabowski, Mary Ann Rozance, Ashlie D. Denton, Manar A. Alattar, Elise F. Granek Aug 2019

Toxic Chemical Governance Failure In The United States: Key Lessons And Paths Forward, Ariana M. Chiapella, Zbigniew Grabowski, Mary Ann Rozance, Ashlie D. Denton, Manar A. Alattar, Elise F. Granek

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Over 40 years of regulations in the United States have failed to protect human and environmental health. We contend that these failures result from the flawed governance over the continued production, use, and disposal of toxic chemicals. To address this failure, we need to identify the broader social, political, and technological processes producing, knowing, and regulating toxic chemicals, collectively referred to as toxic chemical governance. To do so, we create a conceptual framework covering five key domains of governance: knowledge production, policy design, monitoring and enforcement, evaluation, and adjudication. Within each domain, social actors of varying power negotiate what constitutes …

Building Bridges Between Producers And Schools: The Role Of Extension In The Farm To School Program, Shuyang Qu, Laura Fischer, Joy Rumble

Journal of Extension

Childhood obesity is one of the leading problems facing Americans today. As children continue to struggle with both obesity and food insecurity, many parents and doctors look to schools to be responsible for providing healthful meals. The aim of the Farm to School (F2S) program is to bring fresh, local produce into school cafeterias. Aligning with Extension goals, the F2S program provides an opportunity for both the development of healthful lifestyles and increases in agricultural profits. Through interviews with producers and school food service directors, we determined ways Extension programming can be used to improve the efficiency of the F2S …

Hannah Arendt’S “Political Beings” As A Representation Of Political Existentialism For Humans Existing In The World, Rendi Lustanto, Ganang Dwi Kartika

International Review of Humanities Studies

Discussions in politics often focus on a broad range of political systems or political movements. This focus leads to the efforts to direct the public to the conversation of "Politics" in the sense of a system and it overlooks the fact that politics is built on the crystallization of ideas from individuals who interpret the condition of togetherness in the world. The interpretation is very important because it is the starting point for political discourse to grow and develop, which is often referred to as individual’s "political" struggle. The struggle involves a conversation between me and myself which is later …

The gut microbiome of primates, including humans, is reported to closely follow host evolutionary history, with gut microbiome composition being specific to the genetic background of its primate host. However, the comparative models used to date have mainly included a limited set of closely related primates. To further understand the forces that shape the primate gut microbiome, with reference to human populations, we expanded the comparative analysis of variation among gut microbiome compositions and their primate hosts, including 9 different primate species and 4 human groups characterized by a diverse set of subsistence patterns (n = 448 samples). The results …
