Examining The Relationship Between Research Climate And Faculty Productivity At An Emerging Academic Health Center In The Southeastern U.S., Hagan E. Walker
Examining The Relationship Between Research Climate And Faculty Productivity At An Emerging Academic Health Center In The Southeastern U.S., Hagan E. Walker
All Dissertations
Logistic regression analysis was utilized to determine the relationship between research productivity and the research climate, as measured by 155 clinical faculty survey responses, in an Academic Health System in the Southeastern U.S. Subscales addressing the institutional characteristics of goals, culture, mentoring, network, resources, time, communication, rewards, opportunities, and governance were used as independent variables. The dichotomous dependent variable was whether clinical faculty were productive in research as measured by IRB protocols.
Results indicated that a positive view of the research climate for networking and resources significantly improves the odds for clinical faculty showing increased research productivity. The study demonstrated …
Social Engineering: How U.S. Businesses Strengthen The Weakest Link Against Cybersecurity Threats, Lily J. Pharris
Social Engineering: How U.S. Businesses Strengthen The Weakest Link Against Cybersecurity Threats, Lily J. Pharris
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological qualitative study was to investigate how IS professionals working in U.S. businesses make sense of their lives and experiences as they address and prevent vulnerabilities to social engineering attacks. This larger problem was explored through an in-depth study of social engineering and its effect on IS professionals working in U.S. businesses operating within healthcare, financial services, and educational industries across the central and northwest regions of Louisiana. Through its use of a phenomenological research design, the study bridged a gap in the social engineering literature, which was primarily comprised of studies that utilized a …
Christian Teachers’ Experiences Motivating High School Students In The Pacific Northwest: A Transcendental Phenomenology, Michael Anthony Rickman
Christian Teachers’ Experiences Motivating High School Students In The Pacific Northwest: A Transcendental Phenomenology, Michael Anthony Rickman
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study sought to describe experiences of Christian high school teachers motivating students in the Pacific Northwest to be autonomous learners, competent in skills and achievements, and relationally balanced within a Christian environment. The literature indicates two phenomena exist. First, student motivation decreases as they progress; and second, a gap exists in the literature related to Christian schoolteachers’ experiences motivating students. The research question is “How do Christian high school teachers describe their experiences motivating students to be autonomous, competent, and relational?” Purposeful sampling produced nine participants from Christian high schools in the Pacific …
Licentious Legends: A Folklore Podcast, Alexandra L. Haynes
Licentious Legends: A Folklore Podcast, Alexandra L. Haynes
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Licentious Legends was created out of a need to both understand and educate about sexual contemporary legends; not just what they are and what defines them, but the effect that they have on those who experience them. The purpose of this podcast is not to shame, but to take what has been found and educate about the joys and dangers of these legends. These legends range from the everyday (such as "The Hook"), to legends about a young man killing himself with a plunger. In an effort to gather as many examples as they could, Faye interviewed several of their …
Emerging Adult Career Pathways: Understanding Aspirations And Switching, Tasmiah Amreen
Emerging Adult Career Pathways: Understanding Aspirations And Switching, Tasmiah Amreen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Emerging adulthood is a stage of life characterized by a high degree of fluctuation in identity formation and future decision-making (Arnett 2015). During this life stage, emerging adults make decisions about their future career by assessing whether they want to continue with their current career pathway or whether they intend to switch. The present study investigates this process in terms of its overall prevalence – or how often emerging adults intend to switch career trajectories – and the correlates of it. Previous studies on career switching have focused largely on educational switches. This quantitative study operationalizes career pathway by using …
Health Care Provider Recruitment And Retention In Millard County, Utah, Ronald T. Draper
Health Care Provider Recruitment And Retention In Millard County, Utah, Ronald T. Draper
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Millard County, Utah, rural and sparsely populated, continues to experience challenges in recruiting and retaining primary health care providers. My study addressed the lack of a rigorous and systemic analysis of this problem by collecting and analyzing data from a series of semi-structured interviews conducted between January and March 2019. These interviews were with nineteen of the twenty-four known health care providers who began practice in the county from the mid1980s to 2018, as well as with four administrators.
The study, taking advantage of this comprehensive analysis, provided a more extensive understanding of the root causes underlying the recruitment and …
A Geochemical Analysis Of Tosawihi Quarries Chert Using X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Bethany M. Wurster
A Geochemical Analysis Of Tosawihi Quarries Chert Using X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry, Bethany M. Wurster
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Lithic source analysis, or “sourcing,” is a geochemical compositional analysis of lithic materials for both major and trace elements. Sourcing analysis assigns lithic sources to geochemical groups according to distinct geochemical compositions, where unique elemental signatures represent separate lithic sources. In archaeological research, sourcing informs upon mobility strategies, trade and exchange networks, and lithic conveyance studies. While obsidian sourcing is a relatively reliable and popular technique, chert sourcing is more difficult and historically less successful largely due to variability in chert formation processes. X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) offers a possible sourcing technique, and is non-destructive, as well as time and …
Newspaper Representations Of Homelessness: A Temporal Comparative Analysis, Sarah Werman
Newspaper Representations Of Homelessness: A Temporal Comparative Analysis, Sarah Werman
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research focuses on the ways in which homelessness is discussed in two newspapers in a major city in the intermountain United States. I analyzed newspaper articles with the goal of understanding public discourse in two ideologically distinct newspaper venues. I examined the news media portrayal of the homeless in 752 articles in these two newspapers during two distinct six-month time periods, one during which the city was nationally recognized as a major advocate for “Housing First,” or “solving homelessness,” and a more recent period during which urban gentrification has challenged the location of homeless services. Specifically, I addressed the …
Thylacine Dreams: The Vernacular Resurrection Of An Extinct Marsupial, Daisy M. Ahlstone
Thylacine Dreams: The Vernacular Resurrection Of An Extinct Marsupial, Daisy M. Ahlstone
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis explores the folk resurrection of the thylacine through artwork and symbolic interaction. The thylacine, better known as the Tasmanian tiger, is a marsupial that suffered a government-sanctioned massacre leading to its extinction in 1936. The thylacine’s status as a hidden animal has inspired what folklorists call “ostensive practice”; people not only actively seek out the thylacine in the wilderness of Tasmania today and share their sightings online, but they have also incorporated the thylacine as a symbol of hope and perseverance into various forms of folk art.
There have been upwards of five thousand documented sightings of the …
An Assessment Of Self-Determination Skills In Transition-Age Students With Disabilities Following Instruction Using The My Transition Portfolio Program, Eliza Jex
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The successful transition for students with disabilities into adult roles and activities post high-school, including employment, participation in postsecondary educational opportunities, and inclusion in social activities, continues to be a challenge for these individuals. Research has established that the development of certain skills earlier on can support students with disabilities in making a successful transition into these adult roles. The development of self-determination skills is one such practice. There is a need in the field of education to further research in programs that are available for teachers in providing instruction in self-determination skills. This study sought to establish research on …
Subsistence Strategy Tradeoffs In Long-Term Population Stability Over The Past 6,000 Years, Darcy A. Bird
Subsistence Strategy Tradeoffs In Long-Term Population Stability Over The Past 6,000 Years, Darcy A. Bird
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
I conduct the first comparative analysis of long term human population stability in North America. Questions regarding population stability among animals and plants are fundamental to population ecology, yet no anthropological research has addressed human population stability. This is an important knowledge gap, because a species’ population stability can have implications for its risk of extinction and for the stability of the ecological community in which it lives. I use archaeological and paleoclimatological data to compare long term population stability with subsistence strategy and climate stability over 6,000 years. I conduct my analysis on a large scale to better understand …
Women In Agriculture: Living In A "Man's World", Ennea A. Fairchild
Women In Agriculture: Living In A "Man's World", Ennea A. Fairchild
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Despite women’s involvement in agriculture, their contributions have been overlooked in society. Women make up at least a third of those involved in agriculture as farmers, landowners, and in agricultural faculty positions. These numbers do not appear to be decreasing. Although there are several agricultural roles, this study focuses primarily on those women who own agricultural land, but do not farm the land themselves. Rather, these women rent it out to a farmer who operates the land for them (women nonoperating landowners or WNOLs, in short). Previous research suggests these women may be facing considerable barriers as an agricultural landowner …
Constraints And Context: Testing The Effects Of Anthropogenic Noise And Social Factors On Avian Signaling Behavior, Erin E. Grabarczyk
Constraints And Context: Testing The Effects Of Anthropogenic Noise And Social Factors On Avian Signaling Behavior, Erin E. Grabarczyk
Dissertations
Rapid human-generated environmental change has irrevocably altered the natural world. Understanding how animal populations respond and persist within these modified landscapes is critical for mitigating associated negative environmental impacts. For organisms that rely on vocal communication, anthropogenic noise masks signals, reducing the area over which vocalizations can be heard. For birds, noise overlaps with songs males use to defend breeding areas and attract mates, both critical aspects of reproduction. In response to noise, males adjust their song structure, but whether they actually benefit from song changes is unknown. Moreover, it remains unclear whether noise disrupts communication by affecting interactions with …
The Principles And Nature Of Jewish Law, J. David Bleich
The Principles And Nature Of Jewish Law, J. David Bleich
Cardozo Law Review
A professor at a prominent school of law relates that he was asked a rather incongruous question. On the last day of classes in a course on Roman law, a student soliciting information regarding the approaching final examination asked, "Are we responsible only for material in the textbook or are we responsible for recent cases as well?" It is, of course, ludicrous to speak of "recent cases" in conjunction with a system of law that, despite its continued and profound influence over other systems of law, has for many centuries not been sovereign in any jurisdiction.
Using Context To Communicate: Romanian Sign Language Learners And Their Communication Strategies, Rebecca Melville
Using Context To Communicate: Romanian Sign Language Learners And Their Communication Strategies, Rebecca Melville
Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on the communication strategies used by second language learners of Romanian Sign Language (LSR), including learners of different proficiency levels, and investigates whether the learner’s proficiency level affects the kinds or variety of communication strategies they use. Unlike previous studies of communication strategies by language learners, it focuses on learners of a signed rather than a spoken language.
The study consisted of two tasks—the first being a structured task where the learner was given a list of ten words to communicate to an interlocutor (a Deaf native signer). The second task was less structured and asked the …

Examining Dimensions Of The Organizational Culture At Colleges Of Veterinary Medicine In The United States, Rachel A. Hendricks
Education Doctoral
The purpose of this study was to explore the organizational culture present in veterinary medicine academia from the perspective of the female faculty. According to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), during the 2016-2017 academic year 80.5% of students enrolled at a college of veterinary medicine (CVM) in the United States were women while 35.4% of tenure or tenure-track veterinary professors were female (AAVMC, 2017). There is no empirical, published literature that has examined the organizational culture at the colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States. In this quantitative study, a survey entitled, Culture Conducive to Women’s …
Conservation And Structural Intervention Of A Writing Table, Karen Bishop
Conservation And Structural Intervention Of A Writing Table, Karen Bishop
Art Conservation Master's Projects
A wooden writing table from the Buffalo History Museum was received for conservation treatment at Buffalo State College to address an inherent structural issue. Longwave ultraviolet (UVA) induced visible fluorescence and reflected UVA imaging were utilized in addition to x-radiography to document the table’s condition upon arrival. An artist interview was conducted and referenced to help guide formulation of a treatment plan. Structural intervention was carried out to create new mortise-and-tenon joints which utilized laminated bentwood tenons. Surface accretions were removed and an overcoat of polyurethane varnish was applied to unify the damaged surface.

Analysis And Conservation Of A Chikara, Kaitlyn Wright
Art Conservation Master's Projects
A stringed musical instrument from the Buffalo Museum of Science was received for conservation treatment at Buffalo State College. Historical research, examination of previous interventions through imaging techniques, and material analysis were carried out to possibly place the instrument in a historical context and create an understanding of its fabrication. Transmission-Fourier transform infrared microscopy (Transmission-FTIR), pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (py-GC-MS), x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), and microchemical testing were utilized to understand the coatings on the body of the instrument. Polarized light microscopy (PLM) was performed on the fibers, hair, and wood to understand the materials used in manufacture and their possible …
Pathways, Not Punishment: An Annotated Snap Employment And Training Advocacy Toolkit For Policy Newbies, Angela Eastlund
Pathways, Not Punishment: An Annotated Snap Employment And Training Advocacy Toolkit For Policy Newbies, Angela Eastlund
Student Research – Stevenson Center
For someone brand new to public policy advocacy, the concept can seem broad and putting it to practice can seem vague. In part, this is because the spectrum of public policy advocacy is broad and contains a vast variety of actions under its umbrella. The Chicago Jobs Council’s policy advocacy strategies around SNAP Employment and Training that are recounted in this toolkit are shared in context with the intent of shedding some light on the why, how, and when particular strategies are utilized. Our hope is that the examples shared here can be used to inform anyone that is a …
Wholeheartedness And Acquaintance With God, Sarah Naomi Dannemiller
Wholeheartedness And Acquaintance With God, Sarah Naomi Dannemiller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I demonstrate that wholeheartedness is a constitutive intellectual virtue. Wholeheartedness consists of a definite and unified volitional structure in which one’s desires are integrated around union with God and which contributes to one’s personal intellectual worth by positively orienting her toward acquaintance with God. Since wholeheartedness consists of a hierarchy of the will that prioritizes a desire for union with God, wholeheartedness aims towards the epistemic good of acquaintance. By desiring that one have a will that wills union with God, she cooperates with God toward wholeheartedness. As one becomes aware of her volitional structure changing, she …
John The Solitary's Epistle To Marcianus: Edition, Translation, And Analysis, Ethan K. Laster
John The Solitary's Epistle To Marcianus: Edition, Translation, And Analysis, Ethan K. Laster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents an edition, translation, and analysis of the heretofore unpublished Epistle to Marcianus, an early fifth-century letter attributed to Mar John the Solitary of Apamea. Mar John has long remained a somewhat shadowy figure in Syriac studies, given the complexities of his writings, confusion about what texts should be attributed to him, and his condemnation as a heretic by later Syriac writers. However, scholars have recently begun suggesting that Mar John was in fact quite influential in the development of Syriac ascetic theology. The Epistle to Marcianus (EpMar) considers the passion of lust, which is …
College Adjustment, Belongingness, Academic Self-Efficacy, Persistence, And Academic Success Among First-Generation College Students, Heather R. Highhouse
College Adjustment, Belongingness, Academic Self-Efficacy, Persistence, And Academic Success Among First-Generation College Students, Heather R. Highhouse
Dissertations
Previous research has compared the impacts of college adjustment, belongingness, and academic self-efficacy on first-generation and continuing-generation college students. However, the impacts of these factors on academic success (GPA) and persistence of first-semester, first-generation college students have not been investigated. The primary purpose of this study was to examine college adjustment and belongingness for first-semester, first-generation college students, with a focus on race and gender. This study also examined the impact of academic self-efficacy (i.e., course self-efficacy and social self-efficacy), college adjustment, and belongingness for academic success (GPA) and persistence of these students. The roles of race and gender in …
Remembering How To Listen: A Theoretical And Pedagogical Approach To Literacy, Adolescence, And Young Adult Literature, Stuart A. Morris
Remembering How To Listen: A Theoretical And Pedagogical Approach To Literacy, Adolescence, And Young Adult Literature, Stuart A. Morris
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is a substantial and growing body of critical theory on young adult literature (YAL), and there are a multitude of publications dealing with how secondary English/ELA teachers incorporate YAL in their classroom. From a curricular perspective, however, YAL is still most often considered inferior to canonical novels (i.e., “classics” or “great books”); thus, there has been no substantive or concerted movement to include YAL in secondary English/ELA at a curricular level, particularly in grades ten, eleven, and twelve. While the scholarship on YAL is extensive, discussion of YAL is most often devoted to pedagogy or literary theory, as if …
Spirit Don't Ever Die: Apocalypse And Denial In An Infinite Universe, Nathan Riggs
Spirit Don't Ever Die: Apocalypse And Denial In An Infinite Universe, Nathan Riggs
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In The Great Derangement, Amitav Ghosh catalogs contemporary fiction’s failure to adequately engage with catastrophic climate change. In this thesis, I argue the engagement problem has a century-old analogue in fiction’s approach to entropy. Entropy was among the first secular apocalyptic modes in mainstream discourse, and this investigation of authors’ approaches to its portrayal provides a model for understanding fiction’s denial or acceptance of apocalypse. I first examine William Hope Hodgson’s 1912 novel The Night Land, a far-future tale set in a post-solar Earth. I contend that Hodgson’s centering of the human experience prevents him from portraying a true end …

Por Ahí Dicen: Sexual Health Promotion Campaign In A Puerto Rican Community, Isabella M. Antenucci, Yessica Guzman, Phillip Granberry, Maria Idali Torres
Gastón Institute Publications
The purpose of this study was to assess Puerto Rican mother’s levels of exposure to the Spanish media campaign launched by Por Ahi Dicen, and to assess the identification mothers had with these stories. The methodology consisted of in-person survey interviews of 210 Puerto Rican mothers residing in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. The study used a sub-set of data taken from these interviews and analyzed using Microsoft Excel and Stata15. The major finding of this study showed that the mothers who regularly watched television in the 90-day campaign time frame were more exposed to the campaign than they were …
The Effects Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Thickness, Knee Joint Laxity, Activity Level, Neuromuscular Imbalances And Lower Extremity Muscular Activation Patterns On Anterior Cruciate Ligament Loading, Zachary A. Sievert
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
There are numerous known mechanisms of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk that span from knee joint laxity to landing mechanics. However, the relationship of these mechanisms to ACL loading during landing is unclear. In addition to landing mechanics, anthropological aspects such as ACL diameter, which can now be obtained via ultrasound, may also be an important mechanism for ACL loading. However, the relationship between ACL diameter to ACL loading and landing mechanics remains unknown. This study was conducted with three primary purposes. The first purpose of this study was to examine the inter and intra-rater reliability of using ultrasound …
Strangers In The Law: Lawyers' Law And The Other Legal Dimensions, Mauro Bussani
Strangers In The Law: Lawyers' Law And The Other Legal Dimensions, Mauro Bussani
Cardozo Law Review
Political and legal theories have long been takingfor granted the idea that law is the province of government and government recognized authorities, including the judiciary. They have concentrated on the processes and principles, by which the form and substance of State law are determined, implemented, and enforced. This law is what I will call official or State law. By contrast, many non-official sites of legal production have always existed and still exist (outside and) inside the West. These sites produce rules that may flourish indifferent to or in opposition to official law and take the settlement of disputes arising out …
On Constitutional Identity And The Loyalties Of The Constitutional Judge, András Sajó
On Constitutional Identity And The Loyalties Of The Constitutional Judge, András Sajó
Cardozo Law Review
The following remarks consider the relation of judicial loyalty and constitutional identity. These two concepts were always of great interest to Arthur Jacobson's scholarship and their combined discussion is not only necessitated by certain constitutional developments in this age's return to nationalist sovereignty but is a token of Arthur's appreciation.
Strategic Gift Giving In Vendor Relationships: The Gift Of Cognitive Regard, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Cheng Chen, Ji-Ye Mao
Strategic Gift Giving In Vendor Relationships: The Gift Of Cognitive Regard, Cecil Eng Huang Chua, Cheng Chen, Ji-Ye Mao
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Increasing competition in the IT vendor landscape means it is increasingly difficult for vendors to sustain themselves by competing on price. Thus, many vendors desire to become strategic partners with their clients to thereby acquire a secure monopoly-like position on IT services. How should vendors do so? We argue one way is via the strategic distribution of gifts. This research unpacks one particularly effective gift type- the gift of cognitive regard through a qualitative analysis of a client-vendor relationship. This gift type has five properties: (1) Known Effortfulness, (2) Deep cognitive understanding, (3) Inalienability, (4) Nontransferrability, and (5) Contract temporality …
The Future Of Law And Economics And The Legacy Of Guido Calabresi, Wendy J. Gordon, Alain Marciano, Giovanni B. Ramello
The Future Of Law And Economics And The Legacy Of Guido Calabresi, Wendy J. Gordon, Alain Marciano, Giovanni B. Ramello
Faculty Scholarship
In 1991, the American Law and Economics Association identified Guido Calabresi, Ronald Coase, Henry Manne and Richard Posner as the founders of the 'law and economics' movement. The European Journal of Law and Economics has already devoted a special issue to each of the last three. It is now Calabresi's turn. The order has no particular meaning and the current issue in Calabresi's honor does not depend on a desire to complete the list. Rather, we waited for a very special occasion to celebrate Calabresi's work - the publication of his latest book, The Future of Law and Economics (2016).
