Possible Location For Us Embassy In Copenhagen, Denmark, Danny Jang Apr 2022

Possible Location For Us Embassy In Copenhagen, Denmark, Danny Jang

Symposium of Student Scholars

The purpose of this research is for students to experience using GIS in a professional setting for a public organization. Copenhagen, Denmark hosts numerous embassies for other countries including the USA which was established nearly a century ago! After going through a couple of public opinions left by the locals (Google review), it would be nice if another location was established to assist both USA and Denmark’s bureaucratic needs. The population has surged compared to the numbers from when the building was established, which also changed the geospatial environment that was established when the building was opened. This research will …

Social Vulnerability, Diabetes, And Obesity In Georgia, Danny Jang

Symposium of Student Scholars

This project examines factors of health geography and population geography by examining the spatial correlation between diabetes and obesity prevalence among the population of Georgia. Diabetes and obesity are closely linked together, however, they are still far apart in various aspects which can be from personal to environmental impacts like geographical locations. This research attempts to investigate diabetes and obesity prevalence by examining the SVI of given counties of a state. This project uses data from the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Opendata (which can be found on ESRI). Future studies can examine these health factors …

Historical And Contemporary Population Trends In New York, Thomas Gillespie Apr 2022

Historical And Contemporary Population Trends In New York, Thomas Gillespie

Symposium of Student Scholars

This project explores historical and contemporary population geography trends within the state of New York. New York state contains the largest city and metro area within the United States, New York City, which has served as a major immigration destination for much of its history. Today, it is still considered a major-continuous immigrant gateway metro area. Due to the city being a popular choice for immigration, it has allowed the population of New York to grow and encompass many different cultures and nationalities. This project examines these trends in further detail, by looking at various aspects on why this might …

The Inequalities Surrounding Atlanta, Brandon Benham

Symposium of Student Scholars

Brandon Benham

The Inequalities surrounding Atlanta

Atlanta is reported to have one of the highest rates of inequality in America. I decided that this was going to be the main topic for my research paper. When people think about inequality, they usually think that it relates to one’s race. In Atlanta, there is not only a lot of racial inequality, but there is a big amount of income inequality as well. Income inequality is basically the income being unevenly distributed through a population of a city or a country. There are reports in Atlanta that show that there are high …

House Of Rock: An Analysis Of A Lithic Assemblage From A Middle Mississippian House, Devlin Mcelrone Apr 2022

House Of Rock: An Analysis Of A Lithic Assemblage From A Middle Mississippian House, Devlin Mcelrone

Symposium of Student Scholars

The Mississippian Period is well-known for its paramount chiefdoms, intricate ceramic/lithic/metal artistry, and large earthen works. Premier sites such the Etowah Indian Mounds in north Georgia and Cahokia in western Illinois are often the primary focus and interest within the period. However, there is a lack of attention by archaeologists on the life and culture of sites in the periphery of these large centers. Located three miles from Etowah is a site known as Cummings where a Middle Mississippian (AD 1260-1300, Wilbanks Phase) house has been uncovered. This house had burned down with all of its contents still laying on …

Dating The Seals Of Harappa: A Radiocarbon Approach, Grace Abernathy Apr 2022

Dating The Seals Of Harappa: A Radiocarbon Approach, Grace Abernathy

Symposium of Student Scholars

For many years, Indus seals have puzzled archaeologists with their detailed motifs and undeciphered script. There is no pattern to the relationship between motifs and inscriptions, as each motif has been found scattered across the greater Indus region. In looking at the context of the seals and radiocarbon dating of charcoal, bone, and shell in a singular site, there may be a definitive pattern between certain motifs and the time periods they were used. This study uses contextual analysis to identify chronological patterns of seals discovered at the site of Harappa. Should any patterns arise, this research study could be …

Geography of COVID-19 Waves in Georgia

Over the past 2 years everyone on the globe’s lives have been changed drastically after the COVID-19 virus spread across the world. This united and divided us more than any other event in most of our lifetimes. The pandemic everyone and now that there are two years of data, it is important to examine impacts at various geographic scales. As such, focusing on the state of Georgia, this project explores how the different variants, public policy, and vaccination of our population has changed the trajectory of the virus and how many deaths it has …

Mask Culture, Emily Vesperman Apr 2022

Mask Culture, Emily Vesperman

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This paper defines care in a college context as well as discusses the topic of mask usage in the same setting. It addresses how people have adapted to the implementation of masks and how society has changed their daily routines in order to guarantee that their masks were now a part of it. It consists of various feedback from college students surrounding the topic of masks, as well as how they, as individuals, deal with the guidelines executed across the SUNY Geneseo campus. An ethnographic research process was used to understand the usage of masks in today’s society and if/how …

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This visual ethnography project presents a collection of photographs depicting care and daily life in Geneseo during the COVID-19 pandemic. Student researchers discuss images they have captured in six collections: meaning and change in mask culture, creativity in celebrations and holidays, labor and precautions in essential work settings, and care for our physical, mental, and emotional health.

The Mental And Emotional Impact Of Being A College-Aged Black Woman Amid The Current Sociopolitical Climate, Drew Brody O'Neil Apr 2022

The Mental And Emotional Impact Of Being A College-Aged Black Woman Amid The Current Sociopolitical Climate, Drew Brody O'Neil

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Although many Americans assume that systemic racism has been washed away through history, research shows that this is far from reality. Across a range of interdisciplinary scholarly research exists a consensus that systemic racism induces Black women’s suffering. The main question guiding my research asks how systemic racism facilitates college-aged Black women’s mental and emotional health outcomes. The goals of this study included documenting where systemic racism is prevalent, analyzing the mental and emotional impact of systemic racism on college-aged Black women, examining the coping mechanisms that college-aged Black women employ to minimize race-based distress, understanding how media attention to …

Analyzing Perspectives On Archaeological Curation: A Case Study From The Civil War Site Of Pickett’S Mill, Isabella Rosinko Apr 2022

Analyzing Perspectives On Archaeological Curation: A Case Study From The Civil War Site Of Pickett’S Mill, Isabella Rosinko

Symposium of Student Scholars

Foundationally archaeology is defined as the scientific study of material remains, uncovered through survey and excavation. Meaning the field is dependent upon the accumulation of things: ceramics, stone tools, natural material, historic artifacts, etc. One way in which site assemblages are dealt with is through the process of curation, the storage and care of assemblages for extended periods. This is a varying process, across nations, states, and institutions. In the context of the United States, the National Preservation Act (1966), Reservoir Salvage Act (1960), and Archaeological Resource Protection Act (1979) provide standards for the long-term storage and management of archaeological …

Best Locations For A Future U.S. Embassy In Stockholm, Sweden, Aj Sherrell

Symposium of Student Scholars

The purpose of this study is to find the best possible location for a future U.S. embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. I have gathered data about current embassy locations, demographics about place locations or points of interest that the U.S. embassy needs to be close to or a specified distance from, information about lot zoning, and demographics about the city itself such as roads, railways, and bodies of water. I will use a spatial analysis and model builder through the software, ArcGIS Pro by Esri. These analyses will allow me to determine good locations for the future U.S. embassy based on …

Impassioned Wonder: Theosis And The Place Of Reason In Gregory Nazianzen’S Theological Orations, Ben Vanderhyde Apr 2022

Impassioned Wonder: Theosis And The Place Of Reason In Gregory Nazianzen’S Theological Orations, Ben Vanderhyde

Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal

The theologian is situated between two realities: the revelation of God and the transcendence of God. It would seem that all of theology should be a matter of reckoning with these two extremities. Without transcendence, we have no God. Without revelation we have neither starting point, nor guide, nor aim; theology becomes pointless speculation. We must know God, and yet, not know him. He must remain far beyond any language to describe or any image to depict, and yet, we must describe him. Theology lives in the middle of these, neither putting God into a box nor holding God above, …

disClosure: a Journal of Social Theoryappears in an altered form this year: a double-feature on Animals Studies and Queer Theory, consisting entirely of interviews and roundtables. Intending to respect the work of the guests and students from the pandemic-disrupted Social Theory spring seminar series, and to foster a collaborative spirit in challenging times, we arranged our special issue to gather two years of collegial conversations in one place. The interviews conducted with the guest scholars who came to speak in the Social Theory series range widely, placed alongside roundtables with the transdisciplinary faculty teams who organized, planned, and taught …

Jesus Woodlą́Ą́Jí Sin: Sounding A Self-Determined Navajo Christian Church, Renata Yazzie Apr 2022

Jesus Woodlą́Ą́Jí Sin: Sounding A Self-Determined Navajo Christian Church, Renata Yazzie

Music ETDs

Jesus Woodlą́ą́jí’ Sin: Navajo Hymns of Faith, the first and only extensive Navajo hymnal, was published in 1979. This hymnal contains 365 hymns for congregational singing, translated into the Navajo language. The Navajo Hymnal Committee, responsible for the seven years of intensive translation work, formed in 1972 under the direction of Reverend Dr. Paul Redhouse (1925-2019), an ordained Navajo minister within the Christian Reformed Church. Redhouse wholeheartedly believed that Navajo people had the right to worship in their own language and argued that pre-issued English hymnals by outside church leaders were not suitable for obvious reasons—a language barrier. Through …

The Role Of Coastal Resource Stability In The Transition To Agriculture, Soconusco, Mexico, Asia Alsgaard Apr 2022

The Role Of Coastal Resource Stability In The Transition To Agriculture, Soconusco, Mexico, Asia Alsgaard

Anthropology ETDs

Around the world, the transition to agriculture happens at different times and under different conditions, sometimes failing to occur at all. I address how risk management strategies, such as Niche Construction tactics, influence human subsistence decision making, both within the context of climate or habitat changes and its converse, stability. I focus on how coastal resource reliance in the Soconusco region, Mexico, may have allowed the Archaic period Chantuto society to continue to rely on aquatic resources even as other groups in the region began relying on maize agriculture. To address this question within the context of stability, I focus …

The Relationship Between Nursing Unit Culture And The Use Of Evidence-Based Practice Among Nurses In Hospitals, Jin Jun Apr 2022

The Relationship Between Nursing Unit Culture And The Use Of Evidence-Based Practice Among Nurses In Hospitals, Jin Jun

Dissertations

Evidence-based practice (EBP) has been the gold standard for clinical practice. However, the use of EBP by healthcare providers, including nurses, has remained at suboptimal rates. Though researchers have examined various factors that influence nurses' use of EBP, studies of more complex organizational factors are limited. Nursing unit culture, which encompasses unique shared values, beliefs, and assumptions, may be one of the driving forces in determining nurses' behavior, leading to variation in the use of EBP. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between nursing unit culture and the use of EBP among nurses in hospitals under …

Onsite Water Reuse: Fate Of Indicator Bacteria, Antibiotic Resistant Genes, Environmental Impacts, And User Perceptions, Michelle B. Henderson Apr 2022

Onsite Water Reuse: Fate Of Indicator Bacteria, Antibiotic Resistant Genes, Environmental Impacts, And User Perceptions, Michelle B. Henderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Changes in water use, climate, and urbanization have shifted how water resources are used and defined. Wastewater is increasingly regarded as a viable resource to address challenges in non-potable and potable water applications. When dealing with water reuse, water quality and quantity are of the utmost importance; and the final product must be suitable for its intended purpose and acceptable to users. The first portion of this research analyzed the performance and environmental impacts of pilot-scale Hybrid Adsorption Biological Treatment Systems (HABiTS) for onsite wastewater treatment and reuse. Various configurations were investigated to increase HABiTS performance and ability to produce …

Enhancing Melatonin Secretion: The Methodical Consumption Of Tryptophan From Whole Cow’S Milk To Regulate Sleep Quality In Individuals Aged 18-30 With Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder, Shraddha Patel Apr 2022

Enhancing Melatonin Secretion: The Methodical Consumption Of Tryptophan From Whole Cow’S Milk To Regulate Sleep Quality In Individuals Aged 18-30 With Delayed Sleep-Wake Phase Disorder, Shraddha Patel

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

Young adults in the United States are increasingly affected by DSPD (delayed sleep-wake phase disorder), a circadian rhythm disorder that delays evening sleep and morning wake times. Although medicinal supplements have shown to produce effective results on sleep induction, they come with unwanted side-effects. A review of the literature on clinical nutrition and endocrinology suggests that dietary alterations through the timed consumption of tryptophan-abundant whole cow’s milk could be a supplemental means of improving sleep quality. Studies on chrono nutrition indicate that dietary components absorbed by the bloodstream can change the circadian schedule of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland, …

Serving As A Dramaturg To On Campus Productions: The Development And Execution Of Thea 6910: A Dramaturgy Of Three Plays, Megan Kimball

LMU Theses and Dissertations

In the Fall of 2021, I served as the dramaturge for the Loyola Marymount campus productions of Anna Deavere's Smiths, "Twilight Los Angeles," Brandon Jacob Jenkins, "Everybody "and Melanie Marnich's "These Shining Lives." One can't ignore the distinct and separate story designs of these plays. "Twilight Los Angeles" is a verbatim theatre style, with an arrangement of monologues. "Everybody" is a modern-day morality play with a lottery. "These shining lives" is a period piece set as a docudrama. My process for this thesis will be a reflective and experiential study on performing the role of the dramaturg for these three …

Duoethnography As Transformative Praxis: Conversations About Nourishment And Coercion In The Covid-Era Academy, Natali Valdez, Megan Carney, Emily Yates-Doerr, Abril Saldaña-Tejeda, Jessica Hardin, Hanna Garth, Alyshia Galvez, Maggie Dickinson

Articles

This article introduces the feminist praxis of duoethnography as a way to examine the COVID era. As a group of diverse, junior, midcareer, and senior feminist scholars, we developed a methodology to critically reflect on our positions in our institutions and social worlds. As a method, duoethnography emphasizes the dialogical intimacy that can form through anthropological work. While autoethnography draws on individual daily lives to make sense of sociopolitical dynamics, duoethnography emphasizes the relational character of research across people and practices. Taking the relational aspects of knowledge production seriously, we conceptualized this praxis as a transformative method for facilitating radical …
