A Roadmap To Doing Culturally Grounded Developmental Science, Tanya Broesch, Sheina Lew-Levy, Michelle Kline, Joscha Kärtner, Patricia Kanngiesser
School of Psychology
This paper provides a roadmap for engaging in cross-cultural, developmental research in practical, ethical, and community-engaged ways. To cultivate the flexibility necessary for conducting cross-cultural research, we structure our roadmap as a series of questions that each research program might consider prior to embarking on cross-cultural examinations in developmental science. Within each topic, we focus on the challenges and opportunities inherent to different types of study designs, fieldwork, and collaborations because our collective experience in conducting research in multiple cultural contexts has taught us that there can be no single “best practice”. Here we identify the challenges that are unique …

Tripod Mandibular Advancement Surgery Used In A Class Ii Malocclusion With Receding Lower Jaw, Yu-Ting Wang, Yu-Ling Cheng, Ming-Jeaun Su, Huei-Mei Tsai, Yi-Min Liu
Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics
This report concerns a relatively simple and reliable method of managing a case of maxillary dental malocclusion combined with a minor underdeveloped and receding mandible.
The chief complaint of the patient was crowded upper anterior teeth and receding chin. After a thorough examination, the patient was diagnosed with a relatively normal maxilla with a slightly small mandible. Impacted upper left canine and missing lower central incisors were noted.
The main treatment goal was to combine surgery and orthodontics to gain the most benefit of treatment. Tripod mandibular advancing surgery (TMAS) plus genioplasty was used as a single-jaw intervention. Orthodontic mechanotherapy, …

In 1599, Garcilaso de la Vega published his account of Hernando de Soto's journey through what is today the southeastern United State. Based on th author's romantie perceptions of North America and dubious evidence provided by expedition members, the work's factual validity is questionable in many regards.1 Nevertheless, Garcilaso's interpretation provides valuable information pertaining to the imagee of the Florida created and perpetuated by European visitors during the sixteenth century.2 In particular, one passage attributed to Hernando de Soto encapsulated general colonist opinions regarding native peoples. The explorer concluded that "all of the land of this realm is practically identical …

In 1994 the original watercolor of Mark Catesby, housed in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, were cIeaned and conserved. At the same time, facsimiles of the 263 original watercolors were prepared using a process called stochatic lithography, resulting in copies almost indistinguishable from the original . Fifty sets were produced before the plates were detroyed. One set belongs to the Special and Area Studies Collection of th George Smathers Libraries at th University of Florida. Forty of those prints make up the current exhibition traveling through Florida.

In a city dominated by large numbers of transplant residents, very few citizens of Orlando know or care about the area's rich and colorful history or its historical figures. Local history is not taught in the Orange County schools "unless a teacher has a particular interest in the subject and makes a special effort."1 Recently, efforts have been made to curb this trend. In 1997, a small organization known as the Fort Gatlin Historical Group sought to trace Orlando's origins through a community-wide effort to preserve the presumed site of Fort Gatlin, a United States Army fort of the Second …

In late June 1791, St. Augustine captain Don Antonio de Alcantara sailed into Havana harbor at the helm of his schooner, the Santa Catalina. As the captain and master of his own vessel, he was held in high esteem, and Spanish customs officials acknowldged his status by prefacing his name with the honorifie title "Don" (Sir).1 A decade earlier, his arrival would have been unthinkable. His port of origin was in British hands in the early 1780s, and Britain was at war with Spain. Even after the conflict ended in 1783, commerce with Cuba remained restricted.2 More important, Alcantara would …

Systemic Stress In Mid-Century American Military Service Members: The Impact Of Socioeconomic Status And Military Service Length On The Human Skeleton, Brianna L. Petersen
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
The purpose of this study is to identify how socioeconomic status (SES) and, separately, length of military service, may affect the human skeleton. Specifically, this study considers non-specific indicators of skeletal stress such as periosteal reactions, enamel defects, and skeletal porosity in a sample of World War II decedents. The Exact Logistic Regression test was used to examine the possible association between military service length and the presence of skeletal porosity and periosteal reaction, and Fisher’s Exact Test of Independence was used to evaluate the relationship between SES and presence of enamel defects, skeletal porosity, and periosteal reaction. In total, …

Analysis Of Briquetage (Brine-Boiling Pots) At Paynes Creek Salt Works: Implications For Classic Maya Salt Production, Rianna Bowen
LSU Master's Theses
Abstract
The Classic Maya period (A.D. 300-900) is characterized by large urban centers, distinct material culture, and long-distance trade of both utilitarian and elite goods. The rise in population during this time created a necessity for essential, everyday goods, to move along these trade routes; one of which was salt. Additionally, much of the production of utilitarian goods was occurring outside of urban centers and political control at smaller, specialized production locales. The Paynes Creek Salt Works in southern Belize was one of these specialized production locales. The number of salt works located in the Punta Ycacos lagoon suggests salt …

Orienting Pacha: Value As Action In The Late Horizon Xauxa-Pachacamac Axis, Ridge C. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The Andean Late Horizon (ca. AD 1438–1532) was a period of exceptionally rapid and far-reaching cultural change. Over this short span of only a few generations, the Inka ethnic group established an empire that was greater in size than any other pre-colonial American polity. The Inka accomplished their expansion without the use of certain institutions (i.e., a standing army, formal writing system, monetary system, or price-setting markets) that the received anthropological wisdom has long held as being necessary preconditions to imperial expansion. Standard explanations of Late Horizon culture change tend to overemphasize the roles of environmental constraints, social evolution, and …

Relationship Between Single Motherhood Status And Stunting Among Children Under 5 In Kgatleng, Botswana, Mulume Sf Mwamba, Shirley Gerrior, Reginald Taylor
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Undernutrition affects sub-Saharan African countries with increased stunting among children under 5 years old. The short- and long-term effects of this stunting include the potential for slow growth in early life, impaired health, and educational and economic disadvantages in adolescent and adult years. In this quantitative cross-sectional study, we analyzed the relationship between single-mother families and the occurrence of stunting among children under 5 years old in the Kgatleng District of Botswana. We collected primary data from 196 mothers and their children who visited selected clinics in Kgatleng. The results of the binary logistic regression analysis were significant: χ2 (1, …

Desde Hernández Hasta Haraway: Gaucho Y Caballo Como Companion Species, Elisabetta Rodio
Vernacular: New Connections in Language, Literature, & Culture

Analysis Of Vertebrae Pathologies Of Grave A650 Chryssi Island, Crete, Greece, Abbey E. Bartmess, Susan Kirkpatrick Smith
Symposium of Student Scholars
This study of multiple, co-mingled adult individuals located in grave A650 on Chryssi Island, Crete, Greece, examines the prevalence of several pathologies of the vertebrae. This grave was built into a collapsed Late Minoan period house (1400-1100 B.C.E.). Grave A650, which likely dates to the 5th – 7th century C.E., shows evidence of being used over a long period of time and may have served as an ossuary. The pathologies of approximately 30 recovered vertebrae, both complete and incomplete, show signs of degenerative joint disease, spondylolisthesis, and body expansion. Researching this data aims to accomplish a comprehensive understanding of what …
