Prototypes, Translation And Research In Social Design Education, Alvise Mattozzi, Jonathan Ventura Jun 2023

Prototypes, Translation And Research In Social Design Education, Alvise Mattozzi, Jonathan Ventura

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

In this paper, we propose to look at designing processes as interpretive acts of translations parallel to other various descriptive and iterative artifacts – briefs, mood boards, sketches, post-it boards, design drawings, technical drawings, user journey-maps and diagrams, renderings, mock-ups, etc. – and to look at what roles prototypes play within these processes of translation. More specifically, the role of prototypes within processes of translation will be investigated by looking at social design and especially in social design education projects. Indeed, whereas prototypes have served designers for many decades to consider alternative outcomes, test out various approaches, and evaluate ergonomic …

Prototyping Dialogues, Louise Ravnløkke, Thomas Binder Jun 2023

Prototyping Dialogues, Louise Ravnløkke, Thomas Binder

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

For designers and design researchers, the ecological crisis and the quest for sustainability do not only mean a re-orientation in what design provides in terms of products, services, and systems. It also demands a change in how design is done, acknowledging that sustainable design and use have to co-evolve through speculative dialogues addressing a radical re-configuration of both the crafts of making and the crafts of use. This paper is an attempt to revisit one of the key tenants of contemporary design practice, the prototype, to find a language of prototyping that can sensitize us to what evolves when engaging …

Data Drawing And Data Tinkering, Ayşe Özge Ağça, Jacob Buur Jun 2023

Data Drawing And Data Tinkering, Ayşe Özge Ağça, Jacob Buur

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Data visualizations and data physicalizations have become popular methods of making big data accessible to non-specialists and uncovering hidden rationales. This pictorial suggests how the acts of data drawing and data tinkering can engage young people in understanding their own data. We asked graduate design students to track their water consumption and waste recycling through drawing and prototyping. We analysed 32 data drawings and 30 data tinkerings using Gestalt Principles and the Theory of Affordance. Through our analysis, we generate a set of ‘data-gestalt’ nouns and ‘data-affordance’ adjectives, which help explain how our collaborators are able to ‘engage’ experientially with …

Bee Buzz Buddy: An Interactive Digital Toy To Facilitate Tangible Embedded And Embodied Interactions For Young Children’S Active Play, Yuehao Wang, James Dwyer, Nicole E.M. Vickery, Bernd Ploderer, Dannielle Tarlinton

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Tangible, Embedded, and Embodied Interactions (TEIs) can support children’s physical activity through play, by leveraging technology and children’s bodily movements. However, many existing TEIs have been focused on older children, and they offer limited interactions that are not comparable to physical activity. In this paper, we report on our investigations of the design of TEIs to inspire new forms of active play, to create opportunities for preschool children to engage in physical activity. We designed the Bee Buzz Buddy, a digital toy that provides multiple forms of digital prompts and direct feedback to children’s bodily inputs to invite active play …

The Phenomenon Of Low-Fidelity Prototyping – An Overview Across Design Practices Making Deliberately Simpler Models, Rolf Brändle, Paula L. Schuster Jun 2023

The Phenomenon Of Low-Fidelity Prototyping – An Overview Across Design Practices Making Deliberately Simpler Models, Rolf Brändle, Paula L. Schuster

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The phenomenon of low-fidelity prototyping is mainly discussed in HCI but is practiced in product design, architecture and speculative design as well under different terms. In this paper, we provide an overview of the disciplinary low-fidelity prototyping practices and discuss the overarching discourses among these fields. Starting with an expanded understanding of prototypes as tangible and concrete models we investigate the tactic of designing a deliberately simpler models for different purposes. Prototyping with simple means with high abstraction poses challenges. Yet, the lack of reflection of a low-fidelity tactic holds unexplored potential. We investigate whether it is advantageous to prototype …

Designing Matter Across Scales With Microorganisms: The Mmmm (Micro-Mezzo-Macro-Meta) Approach, Emma Sicher, Seçil Uğur Yavuz, Nitzan Cohen Jun 2023

Designing Matter Across Scales With Microorganisms: The Mmmm (Micro-Mezzo-Macro-Meta) Approach, Emma Sicher, Seçil Uğur Yavuz, Nitzan Cohen

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Biodesign is a growing discipline focusing on material futures, alternative production methods and more interdependent solutions with Nature. In particular, it fosters designers to interact with other microorganisms and living matter for the development of materials and potential applications often based on material tinkering and material-driven design methods (MDD). The interweaving of human and other- than-human agencies raises multiple questions and characterizes levels of complexity throughout the design process. The purpose of this article is to elaborate a posteriori on practice-based research to support biodesigners in their interdisciplinary practices. First, it proposes "mattertypes" as a comprehensive term that describes material …

Self-Reported Water Competency Skills At A Historically Black College & University And The Potential Impact Of Additional Hbcu-Based Aquatic Programming, Knolan C. Rawlins Ph.D., Shaun M. Anderson Ed.D, Tiffany Monique Quash Ph.D.

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This article provides an analysis of self-reported water competency skills at a Historically Black University (HBCU). A survey was administered to undergraduate students who lived on campus at one HBCU. Of the 254 respondents that reported the ability to swim, only 187 respondents self-reported the ability to swim and the ability to perform water competency skills. The biggest discrepancy occurred within individuals that identified as Black or African American. In this group, 142 out of 250 participants proclaimed the ability to swim. However, the number of Black or African Americans that could swim dropped to 84 when researchers operationally defined …

The Impacts Of Disability Policy And Its Implementation On Deaf University Students: An Applied Anthropological Approach, Tailyn Marie Osorio Jun 2023

The Impacts Of Disability Policy And Its Implementation On Deaf University Students: An Applied Anthropological Approach, Tailyn Marie Osorio

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) has provided legal requirement for universities to provide accommodations for all disabled students, including deaf students. The ADA is intentionally vague to allow flexibility for how institutions implement accommodations provisions. This leads to high variability across universities. Using ethnographic data from policy analysis, semi-structured interviews and focus groups with accommodations coordinators and deaf students from a large-public university, this applied anthropological study aims to investigate the impacts of policy and policy practices on the experiences of deaf students while proposing interventions informed by the coordinators and deaf students themselves.

This study is …

Researching Elite Interviewing In Higher Education In Postcolonial Bangladesh, Ariful H. Kabir Jun 2023

Researching Elite Interviewing In Higher Education In Postcolonial Bangladesh, Ariful H. Kabir

The Qualitative Report

The concept of “elite interviewing” is a recent phenomenon in educational research and has been studied widely in the Western context. Drawing on my own experience, this article traces the challenges and difficulties involved in “elite interviewing” in higher education in post-colonial Bangladesh. It is based on a critical methodological perspective, using a thematic analysis of interviews with 28 higher education policy-making elites working between the 1990s and 2010s at the state level in Bangladesh. This article examines how the local power structure within the current socio-political context emerged from a long colonial past, and how this in turn influenced …

Proxies Of Design: A Case Study And Analysis Of Place And Commercial Real Estate In Seattle, Nicholas Miranda Jun 2023

Proxies Of Design: A Case Study And Analysis Of Place And Commercial Real Estate In Seattle, Nicholas Miranda

University Honors Theses

What kinds of relationships exist between individual buildings and greater society in Seattle? Focusing on the role of design in shaping the value and desirability of commercial properties, the study examines and utilizes a large temporal and spatial dataset to test price analogs between common building attributes and metrics. By employing a hedonic pricing model, the study seeks to identify the impact of these attributes on property values and ultimately relate them to architectural and contextual design, from a micro to a macro level. The empirical findings are not necessarily novel or groundbreaking, but rather, they shed light on the …

Reclaiming Public Space: How Black Portlanders Transformed Irving Park, 1960s-1980s, Ana Bane Jun 2023

Reclaiming Public Space: How Black Portlanders Transformed Irving Park, 1960s-1980s, Ana Bane

University Honors Theses

Although we often take their existence for granted, public parks are imperative for the vitality of a functioning democratic society. Parks are more than just sites for recreation–an important arena for community building in its own right; occupying public space is an inherently political act that takes on new dimensions in resistance movements. This project explores the role that public space played in the history of Black community organizing and resistance in Portland. Irving Park is a sixteen acre park in the heart of the Albina district, Portland’s historic African American neighborhood. Though the area is now heavily gentrified, from …

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

A peaceful environment is a necessity for meaningful growth and development in human society. This review was thus, carried out to examine both immediate and remote causes of Fulani herdsmen/local farmers’ crises in Nigeria, its consequences and the probable way forward. The review which involved searching for both online and offline information on the theoretical basis for the crises and, also the interview of the stakeholders for hands-on information. The crises which was noted to have dated back to 1960s has resulted into loss of lives and property. Apart from this, many homes have been displaced and means of livelihood …

Identity Boundaries Construction And Its Effects On Vulnerability In The Case Of A Historically Marginalized People (Hmp) In Rwanda: An Examination Of Their Access To Human Rights., Jean Baptiste Ndikubwimana, Kathleen A. Anangwe, Oriare Oriare Nyarwath, Mwimali Jack, Charles Mulinda Kabwete

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies

This paper contextualises the vulnerability of a Historically Marginalized people (HMP) referred to as the Batwa to explain how their moral inferiority resulting from the constructed microaggressions and attitudinal prejudices, jeopardize their full enjoyment and appreciation of human rights. The dilemmas experienced by the Batwa in Rwanda have until recently received little theoretical and empirical attention thereby disregarding ontological and epistemological distinction. This paper contributes to this lacuna by reviewing colonial discourse of histories and hegemonies and investigating ethnic socio-cultural practices and other mythical tales. The foregoing indicates a genuine need for the application of human rights approach to recognize …

Our Lady Of La Vang Journeys With The Nation: Marian Devotion And Pilgrimage In Vietnam, Dung Trang Ph.D., Lhc Khiet Tam Jun 2023

Our Lady Of La Vang Journeys With The Nation: Marian Devotion And Pilgrimage In Vietnam, Dung Trang Ph.D., Lhc Khiet Tam

Journal of Global Catholicism

The sanctuary of Our Lady of La Vang (OLLV) reveals the role of popular devotion in Vietnamese Catholicism. It manifests the recent strategy from Vietnamese Church leaders to maintain a public presence with an emphasis on reinforcing a sense of Catholic identity through popular devotion and liturgy. Devotion to OLLV then reflects the interaction of several factors: the promotion of the clergy, political influence, and the collaboration of the Vietnamese Catholic laity. Building on existing scholarship that focuses on the cultural inheritance and collective identity of Vietnamese Catholics around the world, this paper explores the case study of the basilica …

Worship Space And Immigrant Memory: Korean Parishes In Los Angeles And New Jersey, Hansol Goo Ph.D. (Cand.) Jun 2023

Worship Space And Immigrant Memory: Korean Parishes In Los Angeles And New Jersey, Hansol Goo Ph.D. (Cand.)

Journal of Global Catholicism

It has been often observed that national parishes in the US play a central role for Catholic immigrants in preserving and transmitting the cultural heritage of the community. For Catholic immigrants, a parish is more than a place of worship. It is a source of belonging, comfort, friendship, social interaction, and most importantly, a place in which the immigrant’s cultural heritage is reaffirmed and preserved. The early European immigrants to the US built their national parishes following the architectural style of their homelands, by which they could express their cultural identity. However, more recent arrivals like Asians and Hispanics are …

Theological Implications Of The Symbols And Signs In The Sacrament Of Matrimony Of The Syro-Malabar Church, Nelson Mathew O. Carm. Jun 2023

Theological Implications Of The Symbols And Signs In The Sacrament Of Matrimony Of The Syro-Malabar Church, Nelson Mathew O. Carm.

This article discusses the significance of the signs and symbols used in the sacrament of the marriage of the Syro-Malabar Church and the adaptations from different cultures, particularly the Hindu culture of India. It concentrates on the specific elements found in the marriage celebration of the St. Thomas Christians. The rituals that are unique to the Sacrament of Matrimony of the Syro-Malabar Church, mainly expressed through symbols and signs, remain a significant contribution to the liturgy, spirituality, and theology of the Sacrament of Matrimony, and to the theology of inculturation. In the Syro-Malabar liturgy, marriage rituals, and signs and symbols …

Rethinking The Panata To The Nazareno Of Quiapo, Wilson Espiritu Ph.D. Jun 2023

Rethinking The Panata To The Nazareno Of Quiapo, Wilson Espiritu Ph.D.

Journal of Global Catholicism

Filipino Catholicism’s hallmark is its festive and colorful celebrations of popular piety, which exhibit the Catholic faith’s embeddedness in people’s lives and culture. One of the most renowned Filipino devotions is rendered to Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno of Quiapo, Manila. The devotion of making a pledge to the Nazareno, known as panata, is commonly understood as a sacred promise that must be kept in return for a request that is granted. In this paper, I propose a theological reading of panata performance that unites devotion to the Nazareno and commitment to the wellbeing of others. This interpretation aims to …

The Objectives Of The Literary Translator: Translating A Science Fiction Nouvelle, Aishwarya Marathe Jun 2023

The Objectives Of The Literary Translator: Translating A Science Fiction Nouvelle, Aishwarya Marathe

University Honors Theses

Language cannot be separated from its sociocultural context, given that it is a foundational tool with which humans communicate, understand, and connect with one another. This complicates the act of translating literary works from one language to another because the translator is translating more than words, she is transposing a cultural context into another. In addition, literary translators are faced with editorial expectations, the target language audience, and the demands of the source text itself, factors that are not always in agreement and can pose challenges during the translation process. In this paper, I present my original English translation of …

Seeing Race As We Are: Avoiding, Arguing, Aspiring, Michael A. Cowan Jun 2023

Seeing Race As We Are: Avoiding, Arguing, Aspiring, Michael A. Cowan

New England Journal of Public Policy

Racial conflict in the United States pushes people to positions of argument or avoidance, more or less intensely and for varying lengths of time, depending on external events like the murder of George Floyd. Neither stance produces the conversations required to seek common ground and compromise around racial issues. Argument alone deepens divisions and avoidance leaves them to metastasize in the social body. In an attempt to go beneath these two positions, this article first explains the role and form of interpretation in all conflict and dispute resolution and how it is shaped. Then it examines the concepts and strategies …

The Evolution Of Leadership During The Covid-19 Pandemic: An Analysis Of The Research, Luca Patrick Thierry Gregston Jun 2023

The Evolution Of Leadership During The Covid-19 Pandemic: An Analysis Of The Research, Luca Patrick Thierry Gregston

University Honors Theses

This paper's research question, "How has the COVID-19 pandemic changed the concept and practice of leadership? In the end much of the empirical evidence for what COVID-19 did or didn't change in leadership practices is still relatively ambiguous. So it is too early to say that "business as usual" is gone for good. And COVID furthered and deepened long term trends, accelerating the great resignation and a dramatic revaluation of intangible assets like reputation, intellectual property and human capital. In response, there is a clear need for a new leadership mindset for the 21st century after the COVID pandemic.

Beyond The Clock: Exploring The Complexities Of Women’S Domestic Roles In India Through The Lenses Of Daughters And Daughters-In-Law, Pushpendra Singh, Falguni Pattanaik, Archana Singh

Articles

This study aims to estimate the distribution of time spent on unpaid activities in India, with a focus on understanding the gendered nature of this work. The study seeks to contribute to the existing literature by providing empirical insights into the time spent on unpaid domestic activities by daughters and daughters-in-law, and by identifying the sociocultural and economic factors that contribute to this work. To achieve this objective, the study employs data from the Time Use Survey (TUS) conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in India from January to December 2019. The study uses a two-phase analysis to …

Tattoos And Trauma: Are Tattoos Healing For Trauma?, Krystal Bell Jun 2023

Tattoos And Trauma: Are Tattoos Healing For Trauma?, Krystal Bell

University Honors Theses

Prior research and literature reviews suggest that there is medicinal value in tattooing for the healing of trauma. However, tattooing is still a burgeoning topic in academic studies and still mostly taboo as a western societal practice, so there are gaps in qualitative and quantitative data that could further validate the healing benefits of tattoos for trauma. This literature review analyzed 30 peer reviewed articles that focus on "contemporary tattoo data," "indigenous traditions and practices," "tattoos and trauma," and other alternative healing such as "MDMA, psilocybin, EMDR" to establish a well-rounded investigation into tattoos as an alternative healing option. The …

Medicalizing Homelessness: Narratives Of Individualization And Systemic Critique On Homeless Shelter Websites, Ella Mae Sowards Jun 2023

Medicalizing Homelessness: Narratives Of Individualization And Systemic Critique On Homeless Shelter Websites, Ella Mae Sowards

University Honors Theses

The medicalization of homelessness distracts from the systemic drivers of poverty and housing insecurity in favor of treating supposed psychological deviance within unhoused individuals. This article describes a mixed-methods content analysis of 35 Oregon homeless service organization websites investigating how the medicalization of homelessness is perpetuated in homeless service organizations' public-facing materials. Narratives that associate homelessness with mental illness and addiction and encourage self-reform among unhoused clients are identified as key drivers of the medicalization of homelessness on organization websites. Moreover, expressions of neoliberal ideology are found to coincide with medicalizing narratives, shedding further light on medicalization's ties to the …

“Before I Am Quite Forgot": Women’S Critical Literary Biography And The Future, Susan Carlile

ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830

“‘Before I am Quite Forgot’: Women’s Critical Literary Biography and the Future” extends the conversation about literary “worth” in the twenty-first century as it still judges and ignores women authors of the past. Specifically, this essay explores the role of women’s literary historical biography as a primary marker of worth and as a means of shaping legacy. I also discuss my (perhaps more non-traditional) experience—both my personal circumstances and particular material conditions—writing the critical biography Charlotte Lennox: An Independent Mind. Without a substantial biography that shows the scope of Lennox’s mind, her significant corpus, and her interventions in literary history …
