Archivo Y Memoria: Una Mirada A Tres Historias De Mujeres Esclavizadas En El Virreinato De La Nueva Granada De Finales Del Siglo Xviii, Luisa Carolina Julio Gomez
Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Colonial documents preserve information that allows us to know the local Andean history of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. These manuscripts reveal forms of violence that shaped the subjectivities of the time and the resistance of oppressed women. This dissertation examines the effects of slavery and the response of three enslaved women to that colonial violence. This analysis seeks to better understand and make visible how the intersection between racism and patriarchy impacted the lives of three racialized women in the colonial context.
This dissertation focuses on the experiences, struggles, and resistance of three women present in the manuscripts consigned …
“I’M Still Suffering”: Mental Health Care Among Central African Refugee Populations In The Tampa Bay Area, C. Danee Ruszczyk
“I’M Still Suffering”: Mental Health Care Among Central African Refugee Populations In The Tampa Bay Area, C. Danee Ruszczyk
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
An estimated 500 Central African refugee families have been resettled in the Tampa Bay Area since 2002 (RPC, 2022). The cycles of trauma that they have endured place them in vulnerable positions regarding their mental health. Struggling to exist within underfunded social programs that are rigid in their expectations and with the current system of reactive care vs preventative care, the refugees in Tampa are put in a difficult situation of navigating their own health and wellbeing in lieu of having the full support of the United States government and their community. I will discuss how these refugees experience and …
Equity During The Pandemic: Exploring Rural Women Superintendents Perceptions Of Equity Leadership, Kelly Brown, Kathryn Washington
Equity During The Pandemic: Exploring Rural Women Superintendents Perceptions Of Equity Leadership, Kelly Brown, Kathryn Washington
Tapestry: Journal of Research in Education
While the percentage of women in the superintendency has grown in the last 30 years, most superintendents (87%) are male compared to 13.2 percent female (Glass, 2021). The participants of this study were female superintendents leading rural school districts. Rural schools educate approximately 25% of the students in our country. Superintendents of rural schools face many additional challenges such as limited resources, declining student enrollments, high teacher turnover or chronic instability due to geographic isolation, a lack of professional development opportunities are just a few of the challenges these school districts face (Azano & Stewart, 2015; Baker et al.; 2014; …

Proving Intra-Racial Discrimination In The U.S. And Canada: The Room For Making The Artificial Distinction Between Genealogical Relatedness And Race, Martin Kwan
University of Miami Inter-American Law Review
This article takes the role of the Devil’s advocate in order to question the judicial willingness to distinguish “race” from comparable notions. It suggests that, depending on the exact circumstances, a defendant can make an arguable case that the alleged intra–racial discrimination is motivated by perceived genealogical relatedness, but not because of belonging to the same “race.” Factually, the defendant claims to believe in being remotely genealogically related to the plaintiff. This is not unworthy of credence, because it is academically recognized that modern genealogy and root tracing can be an imaginative, forged exercise. Legally, this argument is supportable because …

Daughterly Narratives In Search Of Voice: Fadwa Tuqan, Latifa Al-Zayyat, And Samar Attar, Rania Bedeir
Theses and Dissertations
A myriad of pressures and struggles affect Arab women as they are coming of age due to the familial and societal constructs they face. As daughters, they yearn for a voice amidst a plethora of generational boundaries, transmissions, and ideals. The intricacy of the psychological and interconnected structural factors is augmented by their gender in societies that are motivated, and often governed by, the implications of gender roles. While multiple layers of influence such as familial and sociocultural institutions affect how consciousness is formed, generational transmission, through the maternal figure, is paramount. Daughters, therefore, cannot narrate their personal stories without …
Narrating & Living With Loss: Towards An Ethnography Of Grief, Fayrouz Ibrahim
Narrating & Living With Loss: Towards An Ethnography Of Grief, Fayrouz Ibrahim
Theses and Dissertations
Through this paper, I seek to approach grief through how it is lived, the nexus between loss, and the sought-for physical abstractions through memory, objects, and materials to live with/despite such a loss. This paper is a phenomenological and ethnographic research project on the curatory rituals and practices that individuals employ in keeping lost loved ones alive in their everyday. I explore grief through a multidisciplinary and multimodal conceptualization rather than simply through cultural and social practices such as burial and mortuary rituals. The research follows the grief narratives of different individuals in Egypt in inquiring about the objects, memories, …
Privacy Perceptions Transformation In Cairo’S Home Designs - A Case Study: Gated Communities, Yasmine Esmat
Privacy Perceptions Transformation In Cairo’S Home Designs - A Case Study: Gated Communities, Yasmine Esmat
Theses and Dissertations
The infrastructure of gated communities in Egypt’s New Cairo and 6th of October cities have become the new normal. The streets bordered by fences, walls, and the occasional gate, formed when two or more gated communities face each other, dominate the urban landscape today (Kostenwein, 2021). Nowadays, it is highly common to see billboards advertising new gated communities everywhere on the roads and bridges. Gated communities offer various privileges, and one of them is privacy. Taking Cairo city with its several gated communities as a case study, the research focuses on the transformation of privacy perception for Cairo’s home designs …
Visions Of Mary: Patria As The New Mestiza Madonna In Alvarez's In The Time Of The Butterflies, Mila Argueta
Visions Of Mary: Patria As The New Mestiza Madonna In Alvarez's In The Time Of The Butterflies, Mila Argueta
Theses and Dissertations
Alvarez’s In the Time of the Butterflies is a fictional depiction of three sisters who are lauded for their role in ending the supremacist, womanizing, and terror-inspiring reign of Trujillo. While, one character, Patria, seems to represent the traditional, and at times cloistered, life of a Dominican wife and mother (reflecting the Malinche and sufrida archetypes), the text also shows her transformation into one of the most vital figureheads of the revolution. I find that when she joins the revolution, she comes as a transformed Marian-figure. Unlike Ibez Gomez Vega and other feminist scholars who have categorized Patria as one …
The Fall And Rise Of Bengali Muslim Conciousness: Conceptualising The Identity Of The Bangla Universal, Habib Khan
The Fall And Rise Of Bengali Muslim Conciousness: Conceptualising The Identity Of The Bangla Universal, Habib Khan
Theses and Dissertations
The emergence of modern-nation states saw the end of the empirical era of exploitation and exercise of inherent racist tendencies towards the 'other'. However, the effect of that colonial system is still ever-present in the creation and governance of these newly independent states. While every new state aims to be 'modern', they adopt the international legal framework of the West as their own - a system they had initially wanted to escape. The concept of Muslim universality in the form of the ummah should have freed Pakistan from the shackles of its former colonial masters. Instead, this phenomenon was replaced …
Defining Open Scholarly Infrastructure: A Review Of Relevant Literature, Saman Goudarzi, Richard Dunks
Defining Open Scholarly Infrastructure: A Review Of Relevant Literature, Saman Goudarzi, Richard Dunks
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
This report outlines IOI’s initial attempt towards a framework for understanding open infrastructure for research and scholarship. For this report, we examined a body of literature that includes works across the fields of anthropology, scholarly communications, international development studies, science and technology studies, and infrastructure studies. ....
This review also makes clear that the distinguishing feature between open infrastructure and its commercially-run and -operated counterparts is the fact that its value lies not just in its ability to support productive functions but how it fosters positive and desirable social practices and values. It is insufficient to simply assert certain values …

Poverty Rate Inequality: Analyzing The Causes Of The Larger Difference In The Poverty Rates Between Black And White Americans In Philadelphia And New York City, Patrick Carney
Gettysburg College Headquarters
This paper purports to find a cause for the larger differences in poverty rates between black and white Americans in Philadelphia and the same two groups in New York City. Three hypotheses, the education spending per student hypothesis, the economic hypothesis, and the social spending per capita hypothesis, are each respectively devised to explain these differences in the respective poverty rates. The education spending per student and social spending per capita hypotheses are tested using data from each city, leading to the conclusion that the lower social and education spending per capita in Philadelphia when compared to New York City …

Softening Corners: How A Carefully Considered Hospitality Operation Impacted An Educational Institution, Jennie Moran
Dissertations
Enter quickly, as I am afraid of my happiness!
(Derrida, 2000, p.131)
This research project is an attempt to bridge the gap between the philosophical ideals of hospitality and the hospitality industry, by examining how a carefully considered hospitality operation impacted an educational institution over the course of eight years. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that the application of the philosophical ideals to a commercial hospitality setting yielded profoundly positive results. The primary research was compiled by the author conducting a case study of her own food business, Luncheonette which was located in the National College of …
Dancers Of The Book: Yemenite, Persian, And Kurdish Jewish Dance, Quinn Bicer
Dancers Of The Book: Yemenite, Persian, And Kurdish Jewish Dance, Quinn Bicer
Anthós
Despite the cultural significance of dance in Jewish communities around the world, research into Middle Eastern Jewish dance outside of the modern nation-state of Israel is sorely under-researched. This article aims to help rectify this by focusing on Yemenite, Persian/Iranian, and Kurdish Jewish dance and explores how these dancers have functioned and been received within the societies they have been a part of. The methods that have gone into this article are a combination of analyzing primary source recorded dances and existing secondary source research into the dance of these communities. Through these methods, this article reveals how Yemenite, Iranian, …
Exploring The Fifth Quarter: An Enquiry Into Offal Eating In Contemporary Irish Food Culture, Its History, And Its Future, Niall Toner
Dissertations
Animal offal and organ meats seem to have all but disappeared from domestic cuisine in Ireland, despite the recent renaissance in the country’s food culture. This thesis has examined the extent and nature of the consumption of these comestibles in contemporary Irish food culture, and the perceived decline in offal’s popularity in Ireland in the past fifty years. It also sought to discover whether offal and organ meats might have a place in the future of our cuisine, and whether the consumption of more offal and organ meats in Ireland might contribute towards a more sustainable food production system, and …

Conspecific Tolerance In A Solitary Small Carnivore, The Pacific Marten, Matthew S. Delheimer, Marie E. Martin, Katie M. Moriarty
Western North American Naturalist
Holarctic martens (genus Martes) are small carnivores that are considered functionally solitary, with both resource scarcity and martens’ inability to store energetic reserves posited as precluding social behavior. Interactions between martens are expected to be largely agonistic with the exception of mating and rearing of kits by adult females. Nonetheless, we documented multiple instances of conspecific tolerance by Pacific martens (M. caurina) during long-term monitoring of radio-marked animals in 2 study populations. Observations from radio-tracking and remotely triggered camera trap photographs suggested that pairs of martens traveled, foraged, and rested together. Presumed marten associations occurred both inter- …

Historical travel books are important and rich sources of information, as they describe the different aspects of life in a specific geographical area and within a specific time. One of these crucial travel books is Johann Ludwig Burckhardts Travels in Syria and the Holy Land. He recorded, through his travels in southern Syria, important details of life in the east of Jordan region at the beginning of the nineteenth century. He shed light on an important period in the history of the region, and succeeded, through the strength and accuracy of his observation, in covering rich information about social elements …

Interpersonal Communication Model For Children With Special Needs, I. T. Al Darabah, S. R. Darawsheh, M. S. Al Shaar, E. H. Almrahleh, A. S. Al-Shaar, Q. Hammouri
Information Sciences Letters
The emphasis of this study is on how children who have special needs communicate with one another (deaf). Participant observation, interviews, and documentation are among the methods that are used throughout the data-gathering process. According to the findings of the research, the interpersonal communication model for deaf children is made up of two different models, one of which is the dyadic communication model. This kind of dyadic communication does not take place during the teaching and learning process; rather, it takes place outside of regular class hours. The whole communication model comes in at number two. Throughout the teaching and …

Bharatayudha is the main source in wayang (shadow puppet) performances. This is very interesting to study because the events of the war which in Indian stories are very cruel, sadistic, after becoming a puppet show are very different. The hero or importans figures death is not caused by the violence of the weapon, but by someones promise. This study aims to understand the bharatayudha war in Javanese society. Data was collected by observing the performance of the play Gatutkaca Fall staged by a famous puppeteer, Manteb Sudarsono. This study uses qualitative methods to present data descriptively using a critical discourse …
Design Prototyping For Public Technological Solutions As A Social Learning Practice For Policymaking, Francesco Leoni, Francesco Noera
Design Prototyping For Public Technological Solutions As A Social Learning Practice For Policymaking, Francesco Leoni, Francesco Noera
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This theoretical article explores how design prototyping for technological solutions with public and social dimensions (e.g., data-centric public services) might represent a practice that fosters social learning for policymaking. The paper contributes to two contemporary strands of design research: i) design prototyping in public service innovation processes as a means for designing with institutional arrangements; ii) the role and object of design prototyping in “design for policy”. The central thesis is that, through prototyping, the designing of public technological solutions could become a source of policy knowledge and a driver of policy learning. Therefore, the contribution of designers and design …

Prototypes As A Structured Information Source In Theory Nexus, Renata Dezso
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
In this paper, I analyse the role of prosthetic prototypes developed during my doctoral research (completed in 2022), generating critical thoughts and new insights into our value system as it relates to human-centred societal challenges. The investigation settled in the experimental approach of Research through Design alongside a qualitative case study combined with the power of critical disability studies to advance space for understanding relationships between phenomena and theory. To focus on the central questions from a particular single case study project, I worked with Luca Szabados (a highly creative independent artist with a congenital disability) to craft a prosthesis …
Crafting E-Waste Through Speculative Narratives To Raise Material Awareness, Giorgia Burzio, Venere Ferraro
Crafting E-Waste Through Speculative Narratives To Raise Material Awareness, Giorgia Burzio, Venere Ferraro
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper presents a research project showing how the intangibility of the technology embedded in electronic devices can be made visible and tangible through hands-on experimentation and participatory approaches, converging in stages of multimedia prototyping. The case study leverages research-through-design approach, intended as the crafting of the possible scenarios describing the social and environmental consequences of technologies. The crafting activity follows the process of “thinking through making”, defined as the generation of knowledge by the manipulation of matter. By manipulating and disassembling electronic devices through a craft-oriented approach, the materials embodied in those objects become alive and active, with an …

Prototyping Of Theories, Sisse Schaldemose
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper explores the prospects of prototyping as an aid in understanding theory among students at a higher education. Drawing on research by Buur et.al. (2022) into Design Anthropological Theory Instruments, this research, brings the concept of theory instruments into a teaching setting among social work students. Using research through design (Zimmerman, Stolterman & Forlizzi, 2010), this research explores how working with tangible materials influence students’ understanding of theory. Prototyping theories can help bridge the gap between abstract concepts and concrete application. The research is concerned with the tangibility of abstract theory and explores both the process of making prototypes …

To Prototype To Learn Fronting Uncertainties. A Pedagogy Based On Anti-Disciplinarity, Thinkering And Speculation, Francesco E. Guida
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper aims to present and discuss how teaching visual identity and experience design in Communication Design undergraduate education may be developed within an anti-disciplinary approach, adopting a speculative design framework. By adopting this approach, students become familiar with design as a problem-seeking and problem-finding practice, which encourages the development of concepts, scenarios, and results without any predetermined function. Moreover, they assume an open approach to final results and learn more about a design field intended as an open context with blurred borders. The project’s development is based on the principle of learning by doing, which consists of thinkering, making …

Prototypes, Translation And Research In Social Design Education, Alvise Mattozzi, Jonathan Ventura
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
In this paper, we propose to look at designing processes as interpretive acts of translations parallel to other various descriptive and iterative artifacts – briefs, mood boards, sketches, post-it boards, design drawings, technical drawings, user journey-maps and diagrams, renderings, mock-ups, etc. – and to look at what roles prototypes play within these processes of translation. More specifically, the role of prototypes within processes of translation will be investigated by looking at social design and especially in social design education projects. Indeed, whereas prototypes have served designers for many decades to consider alternative outcomes, test out various approaches, and evaluate ergonomic …
