Of Wholes And Parts: Local History And The American Experience, Terry A. Barnhart
Of Wholes And Parts: Local History And The American Experience, Terry A. Barnhart
Localités/Localities
The relationships between the wholes and parts of American history are vital to our understanding of ourselves as a nation and a people. Many of the central paradoxes and ambiguities of our national existence cannot be adequately understood without exploring the interplay between localism and nationalism that runs like a lietmotiv throughout American history. The influence of the westward movement in our nation’s past, the give and take of federal-state relations, the internecine sectionalism of the nineteenth century, and the more benign regionalism of the twentieth century raise important questions about the relationship between local history and national heritage, and …

"Oh, I Have A Story": Narrative As A Teacher's Classroom Model, Kathleen J. Martin
"Oh, I Have A Story": Narrative As A Teacher's Classroom Model, Kathleen J. Martin
Ethnic Studies
This paper examines the teaching practices of one American Indian teacher in a high school literature class. It explores the teacher's use of narrative as an instructional strategy designed to convey abstract concepts through concrete experience. The narratives engage students in critical thinking and personal reflection, and provide them with the opportunity to make connections between social and historical contexts. In addition, the teacher uses stories to contrast multiple contexts with personal experiences, which reflects teaching strategies previously identified as those used by effective teachers. There is evidence that sharing ideas and concepts through story is an important way of …

Underpinnings Of Public Administration Education In The United States: Implications For Public Administration Pedagogical Discourse In Africa, Berhanu Mengistu
Underpinnings Of Public Administration Education In The United States: Implications For Public Administration Pedagogical Discourse In Africa, Berhanu Mengistu
African Social Science Review
Public administration is a dynamic and context-driven field of application. Similarly, educational programs devoted to the subject must reflect that flexibility. The article begins by addressing the history. evolution, and current status of the field of public administration education and its pedagogical underpinnings in America. The analysis leads to an examination of the pedagogical questions necessary in curriculum development and design in public administration education in African historical context. Also. it delineates some problems often associated with and responsible for inappropriate adaptation of public administration design processes. It concludes with a brief discussion of the pedagogical questions raised that are …

The Moral Exclusivity Of The New Civil Society, Dorothy E. Roberts
The Moral Exclusivity Of The New Civil Society, Dorothy E. Roberts
Chicago-Kent Law Review
While commending civil society revivalists' commitment to freedom and equality, this Article argues that the revivalists' moral vision is marred by exclusivity. Roberts locates this moral exclusivity in a flawed account of the relationship between social inequality and moral decline. By discounting the importance of social justice for creating civic faith, involvement, and solidarity, the revivalists' proposals tend to benefit society's most privileged families.

Will The Real Civil Society Advocates Please Stand Up?, Jean Bethke Elshtain
Chicago-Kent Law Review
Some critics have charged the Council on Civil Society with longing for a society that excludes entire categories of persons from membership, with being blind to "abuse and violence" within marriage, and being blasé about growing social and economic inequalities. This Article responds to these and other critiques from McClain and Fleming, Fineman, and Roberts by arguing that A Call to Civil Society clearly demonstrates not only a commitment to the morality and dignity of all human persons, but also a prohibition against any institution that promotes "invidious distinctions between men and women." The remainder of this Article argues that …

Review Of Men As Women, Women As Men: Changing Gender In Native American Cultures By Sabine Lang, Claire R. Farrer
Review Of Men As Women, Women As Men: Changing Gender In Native American Cultures By Sabine Lang, Claire R. Farrer
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Some prefer to read books by going directly to the crux, bypassing any Preface or Introduction. To do so with this book would create confusion, as Lang uses terms idiosyncratically. She defines her terms well, however, presents justifications for employing them, and provides an overview of the study and how she came to write it in both its English and German editions. All this is vital information for those approaching the text.
It has become standard among scholars writing in English to refer to people of mixed, blended, or other genders using first the term for the person's biological sex …

The Shock Of The Strange, The Shock Of The Familiar: Learning From Study Abroad, Diane Levy
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
I began writing this as I sat in a borrowed office in the outskirts of London on a strange computer with an unfamiliar keyboard. I blundered my way from my guest house after riding two buses and walking several blocks, London A to Z in hand. Cup of white tea and biscuits by,my side, I find that this is not a bad setting for writing about the adjustments of study abroad.
Liberal Education And The Challenge Of Intergrative Learning, Bernice Braid
Liberal Education And The Challenge Of Intergrative Learning, Bernice Braid
Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive
The 1990 publication of Ernest Boyer's Scholarship Reconsidered was a benchmark occasion. Almost immediately the academy endorsed his document's usefulness as a framework within which to examine, maybe rethink, practices of both institutions and individuals which appeared to reflect a riven enterprise. Boyer's perception that exclusive emphasis on "scholarship" for status and rewards in American colleges was, as the term remained narrowly defined, incompatible with the demands of proliferation and access, and it struck a chord.
Review Of The Land Of Prehistory: A Critical History Of American Archaeology By Alice Beck Kehoe, Raymon Wood
Review Of The Land Of Prehistory: A Critical History Of American Archaeology By Alice Beck Kehoe, Raymon Wood
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
The Land of Prehistory is a comprehensive-indeed, encyclopedic - and insightful introduction to the history of Americanist archaeology. Well written and comprehensible to both lay and professional readers, it traces North American archaeology from its European foundations through such contemporary themes as the new archaeology, postmodernism, and NAGPRA (though, curiously, only paying lip service to gender studies). It will be a useful, if often controversial, textbook for courses in introductory archaeology, the history of archaeology, and for seminars in archaeological method and history.
It is impossible to deal adequately with the volume's richness of detail: bare listings must suffice where …
Review Of Uphill Against Water: The Great Dakota Water War By Peter Carrels, John M. Donahue
Review Of Uphill Against Water: The Great Dakota Water War By Peter Carrels, John M. Donahue
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Students in my Water, Culture, and Power course must read Marc Reisner's Cadillac Desert (1993), but Peter Carrels's Uphill Against Water will now become required reading as well. Carrels provides a grassroots perspective on twentieth-century water policy in the United States that complements the more macro analysis in Reisner's work. Writing in his hometown of Aberdeen, South Dakota, Carrels tells the story from the vantage point of farmers who were supposed to be the beneficiaries of the massive Oahe Irrigation Project in northeastern South Dakota. How over a thirty-year period they became its successful opponents is the story line of …
Review Of The Dynamics Of Native Politics: The Alberta Metis Experience By Joe Sawchuk, Chris Anderson
Review Of The Dynamics Of Native Politics: The Alberta Metis Experience By Joe Sawchuk, Chris Anderson
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Since at least the 1960s, Canadian Aboriginal political activity has witnessed a startling increase in both its breadth and intensity. This activism has increasingly voiced the concerns and frustrations of Aboriginal people through political organizations whose explicit mandate was and remains to lobby the provincial and federal governments on behalf of their constituents. There is considerable debate, however, about the extent to which these organizations actually represent progressive social change for Aboriginals in Canada or simply owe their "resistance" to the heavy influence of federal and provincial government funding.

Hegemony, Coercion, And Their Teeth-Gritting Harmony: A Commentary On Power, Culture, And Sexuality In Franco's Spain, Ratna Kapur, Tayyab Mahmud
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
Professor Gema Pérez-Sánchez's article, Franco's Spain, Queer Nation? focuses on the last years of Francisco Franco's fascist dictatorship and the early years of the young Spanish democracy, roughly from the late 1960's to the early 1980's. The centerpiece of her article looks at how, through law, Franco's regime sought to define and contain what it considered dangerous social behavior, particularly homosexuality. She traces how the state not only exercised hegemonic control over definitions of gender and sexuality, but also established well-defined roles for women and drew clear lines between what constituted legitimate and illegitimate sexualities, namely, the line between heterosexuality …
