Analyzing Human - Nonhuman Primate Conflict Mitigation Techniques In Mto Wa Mbu, Northern Tanzania, Lily Adams

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Human – non-human primate conflict is particularly crucial due to primates’ high capacity to live among human populations. The study to analyze Human - Nonhuman Primate Conflict Mitigation Techniques, was carried in November 2023 at Mto wa Mbu, Northern Tanzania. To analyze techniques currently being used to mitigate human – non-human primate conflict, this study collected data through semi-structured interviews. Over 87% (n=35) of respondents used multiple mitigation techniques simultaneously. 80% of respondents (n=32) reported using projectiles to ward off foraging primates, 75% of respondents (n=30) reported using loud noises (made either by the voice/body or by manipulating noisemakers), 67.5% …

Always Sunny In Zanzibar: Exploring Solar Power On The Island, Quinn Brannan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

As Zanzibar continues along its developmental path, the island’s energy infrastructure takes on a central role in future plans for growth. Critically, as the population grows and tourist presence is predicted to increase, the island is presented with the combined problem of supplying a greater volume of energy, while also providing a more reliable source to its existing populace. In this study, I will examine existing solar energy systems for capacity, accessibility, and reliability, as well as evaluate their efficacy in providing a functional source of power, both now and in the future. I conduct interviews with assorted stakeholders in …

Hidden Hurdles: Evaluating Informal Barriers To Primary Healthcare Access Among Undocumented Migrants In Switzerland, Arantxa Bonifaz Rosas Oct 2023

Hidden Hurdles: Evaluating Informal Barriers To Primary Healthcare Access Among Undocumented Migrants In Switzerland, Arantxa Bonifaz Rosas

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Undocumented migrants face heightened difficulties in accessing healthcare due to a combination of legal, financial, and social challenges. Informal barriers to accessing healthcare further exacerbate poor health outcomes among undocumented migrants. In Switzerland, where undocumented migrants have the right to health insurance, barriers to receiving healthcare continue to restrict their access to essential services, such as primary healthcare (PHC). Employing a meta-analysis approach, this qualitative study aimed to broaden existing research on informal barriers hindering access to PHC for undocumented migrants, with a particular focus on the Swiss context. The identified informal barriers centered around health insurance, fear of deportation, …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Living in a political, cultural, and geographic border region between Nepal and Tibet (People’s Republic of China), the families of Tsum Valley face many demands from their sociopolitical, religious, and economic climate. Practicing Tibetan Buddhism, the people uphold a set of rules implemented by the community with leadership from Serap Dorje Drukpa Rinpoche over 100 years ago that prohibits the intentional murder of all animals. Hailed by leaders and scholars as a haven of biodiversity conservation due to this customary-turned- municipal law, Tsum Valley also exists within Manaslu Conservation Area governed by an entity of the federal government of Nepal …

‘Unbelievable’: Perspectives On The Digital World In Manang, Alex Halaby Oct 2023

‘Unbelievable’: Perspectives On The Digital World In Manang, Alex Halaby

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Manang lies one hundred miles northwest of Kathmandu in a valley called Nyeshang. Until a major road was constructed in 2014, the challenge of importing goods in and out of the town slowed the development of digital infrastructures supporting internet use. Consequently, the widespread use of the internet and digital communication is a relatively new phenomenon. Already, its effects are visible in classrooms, health clinics, hotels, and social structures. This paper investigates how Manangis learn about themselves, each other, and the world outside the valley in this new digital space. Emphasis is not placed on quantifications, but rather on the …

Negotiating Identities: The Tibetan’S Experience, Tenzin Yeka Oct 2023

Negotiating Identities: The Tibetan’S Experience, Tenzin Yeka

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The fundamental aspect of the Tibetan exilic identity and the competing definition of Tibetaness has long been circulating among the community. It’s a question Tibetans are already asking, that they cannot help but ask, and that therefore deserves an answer. For the first generation of Tibetans, their identity is more profound because of their connection with the geographical home itself. However, for the second generation, having lived and raised outside in the ethnically mixed environment, the idea of Tibet exists in the imagination; though the way in which it is to be imagined is contested by a number of parties. …

A Framework For Christian Social Involvement From The Writings Of Dean Brackley Sj: Scriptural And Theological Foundations, Edryan Paul J. Colmenares Oct 2023

A Framework For Christian Social Involvement From The Writings Of Dean Brackley Sj: Scriptural And Theological Foundations, Edryan Paul J. Colmenares

Loyola Papers

This article examines the writings of Jesuit liberation theologian Dean Brackley and their scriptural and theological foundations for Christian social engagement. Beginning with an exposition of the theology of the Reign of God, it situates Brackley’s thought in dialogue with the perspectives of Karl Rahner and Gustavo Gutiérrez. The study develops a framework for Christian social involvement that complements the pastoral cycle and compares it with models proposed by Jacques Maritain and Juan Luis Segundo. The resulting framework aims to promote a balanced, contextually grounded, interdisciplinary, and spiritually rooted approach to Christian social action.

The Theology Of Begging In The Spiritual Exercises, Jose John B. Fuertes Oct 2023

The Theology Of Begging In The Spiritual Exercises, Jose John B. Fuertes

Loyola Papers

This article reflects on the Ignatian practice of “begging for grace” in the Spiritual Exercises as an expression of spiritual poverty. It traces the Christian tradition of poverty and mendicancy from Christ and the apostles to the founders of the Mendicant Orders who influenced Ignatius of Loyola. The study then explores Ignatius’ own understanding of begging within prayer and spiritual life, offering a scriptural and theological interpretation of this practice. The article concludes with apersonal testimony illustrating how begging for grace leads to a deeper experience of God’s loving generosity.

Understanding The Baci-Soukhwan Ritual: A Step Towards Inculturation In The Lao Catholic Church, Le Dac Thang Oct 2023

Understanding The Baci-Soukhwan Ritual: A Step Towards Inculturation In The Lao Catholic Church, Le Dac Thang

Loyola Papers

This article examines the Baci-Soukhwan ritual as practiced within the cultural context of Laos and its adaptation within the Catholic Church. Noting the absence of official ecclesial guidelines regarding this widespread cultural practice, the study identifies points of convergence between the ritual and Christian faith as well as areas that require clarification. By addressing possible misunderstandings and doctrinal concerns, the article argues for a careful process of inculturation that allows the faithful to integrate cultural traditions with their Christian beliefs in a meaningful and harmonious way.

Archival Inversions: Rethinking Knowledge Infrastructures Through The Cuny Distance Learning Archive, Zach Muhlbauer, Stefano Morello, Travis M. Bartley, Nicole Cote, Matthew K. Gold

Publications and Research

In the spring of 2020, doctoral students at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center produced a collective intervention in the knowledge infrastructures of the largest public university system in the United States. The CUNY Distance Learning Archive (CDLA) sought to document and bridge the lived experiences of faculty, staff, and students—particularly immigrant and working-class undergraduates—across the 25 campuses comprising the CUNY system. The archive’s three public-facing collections span the closure of the university, the transition to remote teaching and learning, and the resulting activism of the #CutCOVIDNotCUNY movement pushing against austerity in public higher education. These collections …

Similarities And Differences In Vietnamese-Japanese Language And Culture: A Study On The Domain Of Words Indicating Kinship Relations From Role Schema Theory, Ly Thi Phuong Tran, Nhu Vo Tam Nguyen

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

When it comes to the perception and processing of social information, role schema serves as a key concept in cultural linguistics, which processes information about the perception of humans to make sense of the complex world and society, information about people, social groups, and events; therefore, the theory is valuable in deciphering culturally constructed concepts with the full range of human experience expressed through the linguistic picture of each ethnic community. Recognizing that the hierarchical cultural characteristics of the two ethnic communities of Vietnam and Japan are most clearly shown through the kinship words in the family and display the …

Free, Prior Informed Consent And Extractive Industry: Indigenous Action Is The Past, Present, And Future Of Global Environmental Justice, Paige Bellamy Sep 2023

Free, Prior Informed Consent And Extractive Industry: Indigenous Action Is The Past, Present, And Future Of Global Environmental Justice, Paige Bellamy

Environmental and Earth Law Journal (EELJ)

Free, Prior Informed Consent ("FPIC") from the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples has been central to global Indigenous action against extractive industries’ harmful practices. Yet, it is often not fully recognized as a sovereign right, which hinders Indigenous peoples’ ability to use it to its full potential. Historically, FPIC has been deemed a consultation right, not a right to “veto” industry action on Indigenous land. Countries that have interpreted FPIC as a mere consultation right have allowed further exploitation of Indigenous peoples, usually leading to environmental and humanitarian disasters. However, when courts have respected the right to …

Initiation Practices And Access To Higher Education For Deaf Students: The Interpreter As A Resource, Susana Barbosa, Ana Oliveira, Fernanda Teixeira

Journal of Interpretation

The transition from secondary school to higher education institutions (HEIs) can be a very exciting experience, but it can also represent unique challenges, making this moment a crucial event in the academic path of all students. Academic initiation practices are a tradition that exists on several universities campuses with the purpose of promoting students' integration into academic life during such an important transition.

It is important to analyse the participation of deaf students in initiation practices to higher education and the sign language interpreters' role in including them in this process. Sixteen deaf students of HEIs in the Porto region …

Heartfelt: A Heart That Is Understood, Ramiro Reyna Iii Reyna Sep 2023

Heartfelt: A Heart That Is Understood, Ramiro Reyna Iii Reyna

Stimulus: A Medical Humanities Journal

The science behind medicine is undeniably critical for advancing our understanding of human health and developing effective treatments. However, this scientific knowledge is only one aspect of providing quality healthcare. To truly serve patients and communities, healthcare providers must also draw upon the insights and practices of the humanities, including disciplines such as ethics, sociology, and anthropology. Understanding cultural and social contexts, grappling with complex ethical dilemmas, and communicating effectively with patients are all crucial skills that stem from the humanities. Without this understanding and application of the humanities, the practice of medicine risks becoming impersonal and ineffective, failing to …

Challenging Domesticity, Mobilizing Indigeneity : The Igorot Migrant Domestic Workers Of Hong Kong, Jose Kervin Cesar Belmonte Calabias Sep 2023

Challenging Domesticity, Mobilizing Indigeneity : The Igorot Migrant Domestic Workers Of Hong Kong, Jose Kervin Cesar Belmonte Calabias

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

This dissertation examines the cultures of migrant activism, social media vlogging, and pageantry among Igorot migrant domestic workers in Hong Kong, focusing on how these Indigenous women from the Cordillera region of the Philippines reshape indigeneity in the diaspora. Fieldwork data from participant observation and key informant interviews with the Igorot migrant domestic workers enriched the cultural analysis in this research that engaged with Jose Esteban Muñoz’s notion of “disidentification.” This research forwards “transgressive indigeneity,” or the creative and subversive labor behind the performances of Igorotness and Igorot culture in Hong Kong. Transgressive indigeneity demonstrates the embodied interrelationship of indigeneity …

Indigenous Philosophy In Environmental Education, Anne Poelina, Yin Paradies, Sandra Wooltorton, Laurie Guimond, Libby Jackson-Barrett, Mindy Blaise

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The editorial group acknowledges the wisdom of Indigenous knowledge keepers and their past and continuous relationships with place, on every continent on earth where humans have lived for aeons. Indigenous wisdom is their life-giving gift to communities everywhere for planetary futures. It is precious, having integrity and an ethic of responsibility and care. Indigenous wisdom as environmental education is the oldest education, being tens of thousands of years of continuity before waves of apocalyptic colonial violence during the last few centuries interrupted lifeways and language-embedded knowledge systems, some forever gone . . .

Learning To Care For Dangaba, Anne Poelina, Yin Paradies, Sandra Wooltorton, Edwin L. Mulligan, Laurie Guimond, Libby Jackson-Barrett, Mindy Blaise

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

In a Kimberley place-based cultural story, Dangaba is a woman whose Country holds poison gas. Her story shows the importance of cultural ways of understanding and caring for Country, especially hazardous places. The authors contrast this with a corporate story of fossil fuel, illustrating the divergent discourses and approaches to place. Indigenous and local peoples and their knowledge, cultures, laws, philosophies and practices are vitally important to Indigenous lifeways and livelihoods, and critically significant to the long-term health and well-being of people and place in our locality, region and world. We call for storying and narratives from the pluriverse of …

Gender Differences In Graduate Student Views On The Professional Climate In Economics, Ann Mari May, Mary G. Mcgarvey, Muazzam Toshmatova

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

This research examines graduate student's views on the professional climate in economics using a comprehensive survey of students enrolled in economics Ph.D. programs in the United States. Topics discussed include stress and work/life balance, disciplinary climate in the profession, departmental climate, and the prevalence of sexual harassment. We find significant gender differences in views on all four topics—particularly in views on departmental climate and disciplinary climate in the profession. We analyze the results based on gender, rank of the institution, public versus private institutional status, and representation of women faculty in departments.

Calling All Students? Enrollment In Community-Engaged Learning Courses At A Marianist University, Molly Malany Sayre, Castel V. Sweet, Kelly Bohrer

Research and Reflection on Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

‘Community’ is a pervasive concept at the University of Dayton, a Catholic, Marianist institution in Dayton, Ohio. As such, it was unknown how students who enrolled in community engaged learning (CEL) courses were different from their peers in demographic characteristics, previous experiential learning, and views of community engagement. Findings can inform CEL recruitment as well as evaluation of CEL outcomes, especially at institutions with a similar values orientation. This mixed-methods study indicates that among four semesters of students in three selected CEL courses, few differences were found with students in non-CEL control groups. One significant difference found was in racial …
