Gender, Forced Migration And Paid Domestic Work: Case Studies On Refugee Women Domestic Workers In Cairo, Amira Abderahman Ahmed Feb 2004

Gender, Forced Migration And Paid Domestic Work: Case Studies On Refugee Women Domestic Workers In Cairo, Amira Abderahman Ahmed

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The main aim of this thesis is to be able to fill a research gap with regard to women and their survival strategies with emphasis on refugee women, mostly from the Hom of Africa, who have fled to Cairo during the 1990s. The presence of refugee women in the domestic labor sector in Egypt is a relatively recent phenomenon. Cairo, as a large urban setting in the developing world, provides an interesting site where all of these distinct actors play the same role and share at least two structural factors: being migrant women and domestics. The basic argument of this …

Cultural Geography: By Whom, For Whom?, Lily Kong Feb 2004

Cultural Geography: By Whom, For Whom?, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The "cultural turn," coupled by the "spatial turn" in recent years has drawn significant attention to cultural geography from those in other subdisciplines and disciplines. One might forgive those who sometimes mistake particular research as cultural geography which is in fact conducted by non-geographers or geographers who would not ordinarily identify themselves as cultural geographers. A pointed moment that illustrated this to me was when a sociology colleague insisted that he had read cultural geography, and when asked, indicated that he had read Nigel Thrift and Ash Amin. One interpretation of this is, as Shurmer-Smith (1996) offered through her title …

Teaching Law And Socioeconomics, Lynne L. Dallas Feb 2004

Teaching Law And Socioeconomics, Lynne L. Dallas

San Diego Law Review

This Article is Dallas's explanation of the role of socioeconomics in the course she has developed to each law and public policy from a socioeconomics perspective. Dallas's course, which parallels the law and economics courses offered elsewhere, introduces socioeconomics perspectives on concepts of fairness and well-being, and then applies them to a broad range of issues from discrimination to globalization, from family law to corporate regulation. Dallas explains how a separate course in socioeconomics may be essential to underscore its importance as a distinct methodological approach.

Socioeconomics And Professional Responsibilities In Teaching Law-Related Economic Issues, Robert Ashford Feb 2004

Socioeconomics And Professional Responsibilities In Teaching Law-Related Economic Issues, Robert Ashford

The author argues that socioeconomics is essential to understanding the lawyer's duties of competence and candor, and the duty to improve the law is thus critical to law teaching not only in professional responsibility courses but also in any course in which economic issues have substantial legal significance.

Labor And Finance As Inevitably Transnational: Globalization Demands A Sophisticated And Transnational Lens, Timothy A. Canova, Claire Morre Dickerson, Katherine V.W. Stone

San Diego Law Review

This Article examines the affect the pressures of globalization have had on labor and finance law. The authors describe how both of these areas affect and are affected by globalization. They discuss the contribution of socioeconomics to their understanding of both the impacts of globalization on labor and finance, and potential responses to those impacts. In conclusion, the authors discuss the importance of consciously and explicitly both recognizing the consequences of globalization, and integrating socioeconomic concepts into our teaching of these areas of the law.

Teaching Federal Income Taxation Using Socioeconomics, I. Richard Gershon Feb 2004

Teaching Federal Income Taxation Using Socioeconomics, I. Richard Gershon

San Diego Law Review

Gershon examines why it is important to incorporate socioeconomics into the teaching of federal income taxation. The Imperium Strikes Back: The Need To Teach Socioeconomics To Law Students, William K. Black Feb 2004

The Imperium Strikes Back: The Need To Teach Socioeconomics To Law Students, William K. Black

San Diego Law Review

Black, who teaches microeconomics and financial regulation at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, underscores the importance of socioeconomics as a critical component of modern economic reasoning. Black, who was a government regulator at the height of the savings and loan crisis, argues that knowledge of economics is critical to those who would influence public policy, and socioeconomists should not cede economics to the Chicago school.

Phylogenetic Revision Of Leptodesma (Leiopteria) (Devonian: Bivalvia), Alycia L. Rode Jan 2004

Phylogenetic Revision Of Leptodesma (Leiopteria) (Devonian: Bivalvia), Alycia L. Rode

Postilla

The phylogenetic relationships of Middle and Late Devonian species of the subgenus Leptodesma (Leiopteria) Hall 1883 are examined cladistically and a taxonomic revision of the subgenus is proposed. Six taxa previously afforded species rank are synonymized with Leptodesma (Leiopteria) laevis (Hall 1843). One new species, Leptodesma (Leiopteria) accranus, is described from the Lower to Middle Devonian of Ghana. Biogeographic analysis of the subgenus reveals less vicariant speciation than speciation associated with range expansion and dispersal. This pattern has been observed in trilobites and phyllocarid crustaceans and may represent a general pattern during the Middle and Late Devonian. Extensive range expansion …

Anchisaurus Polyzelus (Hitchcock): The Smallest Known Sauropod Dinosaur And The Evolution Of Gigantism Among Sauropodomorph Dinosaurs, Adam M. Yates Jan 2004

Anchisaurus Polyzelus (Hitchcock): The Smallest Known Sauropod Dinosaur And The Evolution Of Gigantism Among Sauropodomorph Dinosaurs, Adam M. Yates

Postilla

A review of the type and referred specimens of Anchisaurus polyzelus (Hitchcock) and Ammosaurus major Marsh, from the Early Jurassic Portland Formation (Hartford Basin, Newark Supergroup), indicates that the latter is a junior synonym of the former. The material displays derived similarities with sauropod dinosaurs that are not present in their sister group, the prosauropods. Cladistic analysis strongly supports the hypothesis that Anchisaurus polyzelus is the most basal known member of Sauropoda. Thus A. polyzelus becomes the smallest known sauropod. Optimization of femur length using square change parsimony indicates that the lineage leading to Neosauropoda underwent gradual and sustained size …
