The Effects Of Light And Ageing On Selected Quilting Products Containing Adhesives, Janet Evenson, Patricia Cox Crews
International Quilt Museum: Resources
A quiltmaker’s choice of materials, including fabric, batting, thread and other materials influences the lifespan of a quilt. It is disappointing, and sometimes devastating, when components prematurely yellow, stiffen or weaken with age. Although conservators and conservation scientists have evaluated archival-quality adhesive products and determined which ones are acceptable for use in conservation treatments, there were no published results concerning the long-term performance of adhesive-containing products available to quiltmakers and home sewers. Consequently, they could not make informed choices. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether or not selected adhesive-containing products for quilters, specifically quilt basting sprays, …

A Model Of Animal Selfhood: Expanding Interactionist Possibilities, Leslie Irvine
A Model Of Animal Selfhood: Expanding Interactionist Possibilities, Leslie Irvine
Human and Animal Bonding Collection
Interaction between people and companion animals provides the basis for a model of the self that does not depend on spoken language. Drawing on ethnographic research in an animal shelter as well as interviews and autoethnography, this article argues that interaction between people and animals contributes to human selfhood. In order for animals to contribute to selfhood in the ways that they do, they must be subjective others and not just the objects of anthropomorphic projection. Several dimensions of subjectivity appear among dogs and cats, constituting a “core” self consisting of agency, coherence, affectivity, and history. Conceptualizing selfhood in this …
The Effects Of Ballot Position On Election Outcomes, Jonathan G.S. Koppell, Jennifer A. Steen
The Effects Of Ballot Position On Election Outcomes, Jonathan G.S. Koppell, Jennifer A. Steen
Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell
This article presents evidence of name-order effects in balloting from a study of the 1998 Democratic primary in New York City, in which the order of candidates' names was rotated by precinct. In 71 of 79 individual nominating contests, candidates received a greater proportion of the vote when listed first than when listed in any other position. In seven of those 71 contests, the advantage to first position exceeded the winner's margin of victory, suggesting that ballot position would have determined the election outcomes if one candidate had held the top spot in all precincts.

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups of 54 full-blooded modern and 64 ancient Native Americans from northwestern North America were determined. The control regions of 10 modern and 30 ancient individuals were sequenced and compared. Within the Northwest, the frequency distribution for haplogroup A is geographically structured, with haplogroup A decreasing with distance from the Pacific Coast. The haplogroup A distribution suggests that a prehistoric population intrusion from the subarctic and coastal region occurred on the Columbia Plateau in prehistoric times. Overall, the mtDNA pattern in the Northwest suggests significant amounts of gene flow among Northwest Coast, Columbia Plateau, and Great …

Selective Sexual Harassment: Differential Treatment Of Similar Groups Of Women Workers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann
Selective Sexual Harassment: Differential Treatment Of Similar Groups Of Women Workers, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann
Department of Sociology Faculty Publications
If male workers categorize different groups of women coworkers and, subsequently, treat them differently, the experiences of women from one of these groups would not be indicative of the experiences of women from another group. When this different treatment involves hostile environment sexual harassment of one group, but not the other, then the law must recognize the possibility of "selective sexual harassment." Without this understanding of the nuances of the workplace dynamics, a court could mistake the women of the unharassed group as representing "reasonable women" and the women of the harassed group as simply oversensitive. This paper draws on …

Filming Jesus: Between Authority And Heresy, Paul Flesher, Robert Torry
Journal of Religion & Film
Scripture generally lacks all but the barest bones for constructing a watchable and interesting tale. In speaking scenes, there is not enough dialogue. In action scenes, the action is suggested rather than described. Information about dress, setting, weather, food, norms of social and religious behavior, emotions, personalities and many other aspects that go into the construction of film's "moving pictures" are simply lacking in the biblical material.
The additions necessarily comprise interpretations made by the director, the writer, or the actors. They will be judged and are in danger of being deemed inaccurate, insensitive, or even heretical. The history of …

The Search For A New Islamic Identity: Middle Aged Elite Women, Noha Ali Abou Gazia
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the construction of a new Islamic identity by middle aged elite women in Egypt. I argue that the search for a new Islamic identity by elite women should be viewed as a redefinition of identity fully autonomous from the current codes imposed by the media. For them, the search for meaning takes place in the reconstruction of defensive identities informed by Islamic notions. The construction of a new Islamic identity by elite women should be viewed in terms the conflicts they face in society. The conflict arises from the society's endeavor to impose certain codes and the …
