Seminoles, Soldiers, And Settlers: Identity And Power On The Florida Frontier, Jean Louise Lammie Apr 2024

Seminoles, Soldiers, And Settlers: Identity And Power On The Florida Frontier, Jean Louise Lammie

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project uses an historical archaeological approach to analyze the processes of cultural negotiation between disparate social groups living in a remote borderland in the early to mid-nineteenth centuries. Florida, first colonized by the Spanish in the 1500s was passed to the United States in 1821 as part of the young nation’s nascent Manifest Destiny. The Seminoles experienced multiple colonial conflicts, dealt with new diseases, and selected aspects of European culture to incorporate into their daily practices of lifeways.

Archaeological studies of culture change tend to focus on the product of colonial interactions rather than the processes of change that …

Crisis, Conflict, And Cuneiform: A Spatial Analysis Of The Late Bronze To Early Iron Age Transition In The Near East, Kiersten Stapley Apr 2024

Crisis, Conflict, And Cuneiform: A Spatial Analysis Of The Late Bronze To Early Iron Age Transition In The Near East, Kiersten Stapley

Student Research Symposium

In this project, I examine and spatially analyze topographic position index (TPI) data from over three thousand archaeological sites inhabited before, during, and directly after the “Late Bronze Age Collapse” in the Near East. This project seeks not to prove a particular hypothesis as to the primary reason for the societal “collapse” in the entire Near East over three thousand years ago, but rather to shed some light on how this event affected settlement locations across the region, and perhaps, provide clues as to the factors that resulted in the dramatic shift seen during this period.

Foraging Culture In Iceland: Understanding The Transfer Of Plant Knowledge And Personal Views On Foraging, Ella Jane Maurer

Whittier Scholars Program

Foraging is a broad topic, practiced in different locations throughout history. This study looks into the specific practices, values, and views of foraging in Iceland. There is little previous research that has been done, working with Icelanders, and hearing their stories. Through conducting several interviews of local Icelanders with different backgrounds and a brief six-question survey via the Inaturalist application, this study looks into exactly that. By compiling stories from the interview and survey data, themes were highlighted collecting similar and contrasting statements on ways plants are foraged, opinions on Icelandic foraging culture as a whole, and ways knowledge is …

College Football Success And Its Impact On The Surrounding Community, Local Economy, And Institution Enrollment, Jacob Reynolds

Honors Theses

In the ever-changing field of college football, creating success has always been a top priority for institutions, and if not achieved, it can be detrimental to an athletic department. The purpose of this research is to determine what impact successful college football programs have on society and those not directly involved in athletics. In determining the purpose, it was important to find what components of society are impacted by …

Building The Church Of San Vitale In Ravenna, Italy, Sally S. Morgan

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis uses the evidence concerning the design and building of the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna to reconstruct, as far as it is possible, the sequence of decisions, activities, and methods that led to the construction of the church, made of bricks and mortar, and whose interiors are covered by glorious colored mosaics and marbles. The historiography on the Church of San Vitale begins with the historian Agnellus, who wrote the Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis in the 830s to 840s. According to Agnellus and other sources, the Church of San Vitale was founded by Bishop Ecclesius around 525, …

Snac Patrons' Typical Use And Overall Evaluation Of Services, Joy Bruneel, Melody Loutzenhiser

Student Research Symposium

Food insecurity among students in higher education programs is a relatively new area of research with the first study being published only 14 years ago.1 Over the years, the costs associated with higher education have steadily increased leading to more financial burdens for students than ever before. According to the 2019-20 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, over 4 million students nationwide struggle with food insecurity.2

While the incidence of food insecurity among students is increasing, many students are not taking advantage of community and university resources aimed at targeting this issue on college campuses.3 In a study …

Other information regarding the knowledge of communal resources and their use of them showed that when people are advertised to about communal resources they are more likely to use them; more so than if …

Paradisiacal Protection: Exploring Governance In Sustainable Spaces, Rylee Stanton Apr 2024

Paradisiacal Protection: Exploring Governance In Sustainable Spaces, Rylee Stanton

Honors College Theses

Biosphere reserves exist officially as “learning places for sustainable development,” yet they also embody an attempt to bring together ecological governance with market-based and localized solutions to the problem of economic development (UNESCO, 2020). This thesis investigates the conditions under which biosphere reserves became reimagined as an all-encompassing solution to such a diverse set of global governance challenges. I explore the relationship between biosphere reserves and the evolving discourse on sustainable development within global governance. Drawing on Foucault-inspired literature on governmentality and “technologies of governance,” I examine the practices, discourses, and subjects that have made biosphere reserves visible and governable …

Effects Of A Mentorship Program On High Need College Students: Reflections From Mentors And Mentees, Stephen Miske, Olusegun Sogunro Apr 2024

Effects Of A Mentorship Program On High Need College Students: Reflections From Mentors And Mentees, Stephen Miske, Olusegun Sogunro

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

On average, the college graduation rates for minority and/or high-need students are generally low. To address this situation, a Mid-Atlantic Consortium recently secured a grant to improve 4-year graduation rates of high-need students (i.e., new first-time students and transfer students who qualify as low-income students, first-generation college students, adult students, and/or students of color) by 20% over each selected college’s baseline. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the experiences of students and faculty mentors toward accomplishing this goal. Data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed thematically. Some of the effects identified in this study included enhanced academic …

Unveiling Health Disparities: Exploring The Impact Of Redlining On Diabetes Prevalence In Waterloo's Neighborhoods, Sydney Blum, Jayme Renfro Apr 2024

Unveiling Health Disparities: Exploring The Impact Of Redlining On Diabetes Prevalence In Waterloo's Neighborhoods, Sydney Blum, Jayme Renfro

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Today, racism persists within our enduring policies, crafted decades ago, whose consequences continue to impact society. Redlining stands as a prime example, its enduring impact palpable in present-day realities. This research endeavors to show the relationship between redlining, and obesity, and diabetes within the community of Waterloo.

Prior studies have illuminated a clear link between redlining and health disparities, underscoring how disinvestment in redlined locales impedes access to nutritious food, and thus promoting health issues. Using these insights and employing various mapping tools, this study seeks to delineate the correlation between redlined areas and the prevalence of diabetes and obesity …
