Gradual reduction of cerebral blood flow occurs with aging, and it is a major cause of vascular dementia, a group of dementias with a cerebrovascular component. Interestingly, patients who have suffered a vascular insult may develop retinopathy, which may occur as an early symptom of vascular dementia. Several rodent models using young animals have been generated to mimic retinopathy caused by cerebral hypoperfusion; however, given that aging is an important factor in developing vascular dementia and hypoperfusion retinopathy, we propose to use aged (17-month-old) mice in a model of cerebral hypoperfusion. In this model, we implant two metallic micro-coils (0.16 …

Selenium-Thioredoxin Axis Contributes To Ferroptosis Resistance In Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Arslan Amer, Micah Olamide Idowu, Aqsa Ahsan, Alyssa A. Abbas, Tahiyat Alothaim, Xiaohu Tang

Michigan Tech Publications

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) shows substantial heterogeneity in cysteine dependence and ferroptosis sensitivity. We identify two PDAC subtypes distinguished by EMT status: mesenchymal-like cells are highly cysteine-dependent and rapidly undergo ferroptosis upon cystine deprivation or system xc− inhibition, whereas epithelial-type cells are ferroptosis-resistant. Selenium supplementation protects cells from erastin-induced ferroptosis, and this protection persists even when intracellular glutathione (GSH) is depleted, supporting an additional GPX4-independent protective mechanism. Sepp1 knockdown does not alter sensitivity, indicating that selenium’s protective effect is independent of Sepp1. Instead, epithelial-type cells rely on both cytosolic and mitochondrial thioredoxin reductases (TrxR1 and TrxR2) to maintain ferroptosis …

Reliability, Variability And Reproducibility Of Non-Invasive Blood Pressure Measurements In Rats, Paulo Engelke, Milena Samora

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Accurate blood pressure measurement is essential for advancing research in cardiovascular and exercise physiology. The most commonly used indirect method to measure blood pressure in animals is the tail-cuff system. In addition to requiring less expensive equipment and offering a non-invasive alternative to surgical blood pressure measurements, this technique allows for repeated assessments in conscious animals during both short- and long-term studies. Despite prior validation against the gold-standard methods (i.e., radiotelemetry and arterial catheterization), the reliability, variability and reproducibility of this technique have not been fully established. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the intra- and …

Surviving The Cure: Modeling The Long-Term Consequences Of Chemotherapy, Rachel R. Chiella, Jaden Wells, Sajedeh B. Tabrizi, Savannah V. Rauschendorfer, Cory Dungan, Michael P. Wiggs Feb 2026

Surviving The Cure: Modeling The Long-Term Consequences Of Chemotherapy, Rachel R. Chiella, Jaden Wells, Sajedeh B. Tabrizi, Savannah V. Rauschendorfer, Cory Dungan, Michael P. Wiggs

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Due to advances in treatment protocols, survival rates for childhood cancers have improved significantly over the past several decades, with five-year survival now reaching 85%. However, survivorship often comes at a cost, as exposure to intensive chemotherapy impairs skeletal muscle health, reducing quality of life and increasing the risk of early mortality. The CHOP regimen, comprising cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone, is a backbone combination used in the treatment of childhood non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Previous data from our lab demonstrates that CHOP causes acute and reductions in growth and muscle size in juvenile mice, yet data on long-term outcomes remain limited. …

Strain-Level Heterogeneity In Gardnerella Urinary Tract Persistence And Pathogenesis In An In Vivo Model Is Consistent With Comparative Phylogenomic Analyses, Lokesh Kumar, Sonia N Whang, Deborah K Verges, Robert F Potter, Nicole M Gilbert

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Gardnerella is a bacterial genera commonly present in the female urogenital tract, especially in bacterial vaginosis. Gardnerella are frequently detected in urine collected directly from the bladder and have been implicated in urinary incontinence and recurrent urinary tract infections. Understanding the contribution of Gardnerella to pathogenesis is complicated by its genetic heterogeneity and a shortage of data from in vivo models. One clinical isolate of Gardnerella triggered urothelial exfoliation and promoted urinary tract infection by uropathogenic E. coli in a mouse model. This study was designed to compare diverse Gardnerella strains in vivo to identify genomic variation associated with …

Faith Over Fossils: How Creationist Deny The Authenticity Of Carbon Dating, Mason Black

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

My claim is that young-earth creationist groups, such as Answers in Genesis, deny the authenticity of radiometric dating by excluding any evidence that goes against their belief that the Earth is only a few thousand years old. I did this by looking at various articles made by Answers in Genesis to see what arguments are made and what information is left out.
