Introduction: Cluster On The Social Value Of Medieval Studies, Gregory M. Sadlek Jan 2023

Introduction: Cluster On The Social Value Of Medieval Studies, Gregory M. Sadlek

English Faculty Publications

The Introduction sets up the professional context, the extremely difficult job market for new medievalists, that motivated the creation of this cluster of articles. It then reflects on the typical position allocation process and underscores the importance of adding qualitative arguments, especially those highlighting the social value of Medieval Studies, to the quantitative data usually required in official position requests. The cluster, then, seeks to help individual faculty members, chairpersons, and deans to articulate those qualitative arguments. It includes six essays offering six different approaches to defining or illustrating the social value of Medieval Studies. The Introduction concludes with a …

Cherry Stones And Jagged Cardboard, Karen P. Higgins Jan 2023

Cherry Stones And Jagged Cardboard, Karen P. Higgins

The Graduate Review

Memoir writing is a deeply personal, but cathartic endeavor. It encapsulates a desire to present an authentic, significant story—one that will engage a reader and infiltrate his or her thoughts. A graduate independent study this past Fall (2022), enabled me to flesh out such an expression. I honed in on an important event in my life—one for which I still bear physical and emotional scars. “Cherry Stones & Jagged Cardboard” explores a life-changing car accident, at the age of seven, and a strange realization of the poverty, and thwarted opportunities, into which I had been born.

Promoting The Inclusion Of Lgbtq+ Students: The Role Of The Honors College In Faith-Based Colleges And Universities, Paul E. Prill Jan 2023

Promoting The Inclusion Of Lgbtq+ Students: The Role Of The Honors College In Faith-Based Colleges And Universities, Paul E. Prill

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

An estimated 11 percent of students at faith-based colleges and universities, identify as sexual-minority (LGBTQ+). Many of those students come from religious backgrounds and attend universities where they have heard and continue to hear that their sexual identity is in fundamental tension with their faith identity, leading to problems with mental health and, at times, physical health. On many such campuses, sexual minority students have become more vocal, asking that the university acknowledge their presence and provide services to help them succeed and thrive in college. Some of the schools have moved in that direction. Others continue to balk at …

Honors Colleges, Transdisciplinary Education, And Global Challenges, Paul Knox, Paul Heilker Jan 2023

Honors Colleges, Transdisciplinary Education, And Global Challenges, Paul Knox, Paul Heilker

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

The authors contend that the most significant comparative advantage of honors colleges is the combination of gifted and motivated students from every academic discipline and interdisciplinary curricula that train students to integrate diverse perspectives. The authors discuss how to harness this advantage to provide a truly transdisciplinary education through collaborative, project-based learning, both on campus and beyond. They assert that honors colleges are in a unique position to circumvent the siloed structures of academia by convening multidisciplinary groups of students guided by faculty from a wide range of disciplines. Doing so can help reimagine undergraduate education to address urgent and …

Adam Smith And The Creative Role Of Imagination, Keith Hankins, Brennan Mcdavid Jan 2023

Adam Smith And The Creative Role Of Imagination, Keith Hankins, Brennan Mcdavid

Philosophy Faculty Books and Book Chapters

That imagination plays a fundamental role in Smith’s accounts of both sympathy and scientific inquiry is well documented. Smith scholars have also long recognized that the accounts of these roles presented in The Theory of Moral Sentiments and the History of Astronomy are broadly Humean. In particular, the exercise of imagination in both the social and scientific domains is limited by the extent of our experience. Whether we are “changing places in fancy” with our fellows, thereby giving rise to that all-important sentiment of sympathy, or conjecturing relations between observed phenomena in an effort to quell the sentiments of wonder …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The aim of this study was to create a new measure that assesses potential reinforcers in the lives of older adults residing in assisted living facilities. It is important to assess what an individual finds rewarding since individuals have a greater quality of life if they are doing activities that they enjoy. The study involved a two-step process. First, a list of potential reinforcers was created and evaluated by professionals in the field. Then this list was formatted into a survey and presented to 612 older adults. Participants rated these potential reinforcers on a Likert scale. Results were then evaluated …

Harnessing Axonal Transport To Map Reward Circuitry: Differing Brain-Wide Projections From Medial Prefrontal Cortical Domains, Elaine L. Bearer, Christopher S. Medina, Taylor W. Uselman, Russell E. Jacobs Jan 2023

Harnessing Axonal Transport To Map Reward Circuitry: Differing Brain-Wide Projections From Medial Prefrontal Cortical Domains, Elaine L. Bearer, Christopher S. Medina, Taylor W. Uselman, Russell E. Jacobs

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Neurons project long axons that contact other distant neurons. Neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex project into the limbic system to regulate responses to reward or threat. Diminished neural activity in prefrontal cortex is associated with loss of executive function leading to drug use, yet the specific circuitry that mediate these effects is unknown. Different regions within the medial prefrontal cortex may project to differing limbic system nuclei. Here, we exploited the cell biology of intracellular membrane trafficking, fast axonal transport, to map projections from two adjacent medial prefrontal cortical regions. We used Mn(II), a calcium analog, to trace medial …

Better Science, Fewer Animals: Catalyzing Nih Grant Making To Improve Biomedical Research And Meet Societal Goals, Mikalah Singer, Paul Locke Jan 2023

Better Science, Fewer Animals: Catalyzing Nih Grant Making To Improve Biomedical Research And Meet Societal Goals, Mikalah Singer, Paul Locke

Animal Law Review

Animal models are currently the “gold standard” in biomedical research. However, new approaches that do not involve the use of nonhuman animals are evolving to address the public health and medical challenges for which animal models are less well suited. These alternatives represent important advancements and are being recognized as significant advances. There is a clear societal need to encourage such efforts, and there is widespread support to move away from animal-based research by the American public. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) funds the majority of biomedical research in the United States and should be a key player in …

Bringing Dinosaurs Back: The Moral & Legal Complications, Kacey Hovden Jan 2023

Bringing Dinosaurs Back: The Moral & Legal Complications, Kacey Hovden

Animal Law Review

From Hollywood blockbusters to your local natural history museums, dinosaurs have captured the attention and wonder of the public for decades. The possibility of bringing these long extinct creatures back, once a science-fiction fantasy, is now closer to reality than ever before through a process known as “de-extinction.” This Article dives into the exploitative nature inherent in the de-extinction of dinosaurs, studying the University of Montana’s Dr. Jack Horner’s “dinochicken project” and the moral considerations implicated when conducting mass genetic engineering on sentient beings. The Article then centers itself on the ecological and legal complications likely to arise if a …

The Confines Of Federalism On Farmed Animal Welfare, Miranda Groh Jan 2023

The Confines Of Federalism On Farmed Animal Welfare, Miranda Groh

Animal Law Review

Although farmed animal advocates have achieved some protection for animals through state and local laws, Congress’s constitutional authority to preempt state law and regulate interstate commerce poses a significant threat to those achievements. Additionally, the practical constraints of the United States’ interconnected food system suggest that national, uniform standards are more desirable than a state-by-state, piecemeal approach to animal welfare. Despite the potential benefits of a state-by-state approach and some obstacles faced at the federal level, this Article argues that long-lasting legal protections for farmed animals should ultimately come from Congress, and that animal advocates should concentrate their efforts there. …

Animal Welfare Consumer Protection Litigation: Challenges And Possibilities For Bringing About More "Humane" Labeling Practices, Jaycie Thaemert Jan 2023

Animal Welfare Consumer Protection Litigation: Challenges And Possibilities For Bringing About More "Humane" Labeling Practices, Jaycie Thaemert

Animal Law Review

Consumer protection claims have become a critical tool for animal welfare advocates to attack the misrepresentations that animal agriculture producers make about the humane treatment of their animals. Currently, these claims are an important accountability mechanism, as “humane” labeling standards have not been adopted on the federal level. As consumers become increasingly focused on making ethical food-purchasing decisions, consumer protection claim lawsuits have become more and more successful, drawing the attention of attorneys within and outside of the animal welfare movement. The primary limitation of consumer protection claims in the animal welfare space is that these lawsuits do not actually …

Potential Mechanism Of 5-Ala Treatment Against Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus Infection By Downstream Metabolite Ppix, Carissa V. Napier Jan 2023

Potential Mechanism Of 5-Ala Treatment Against Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus Infection By Downstream Metabolite Ppix, Carissa V. Napier

Scripps Senior Theses

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) infection is ubiquitous in domestic cats, and up to 12% of FCoV-infected cats may succumb to Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). FIP is a highly lethal infectious disease caused by FIP virus (FIPV), the virulent biotype of FCoV. It is difficult to properly diagnose FIP, and to this date, there is no effective FCoV vaccine nor licensed therapeutic for FIPV. Considering the threat FIP poses to feline health, there is a demand from both owners and veterinarians for a proper therapeutic to effectively treat the infection. 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a highly bioavailable amino acid that is naturally …

Diet-Dependent Epigenetic Silencing Of Transposable Elements, Jennifer Mcintyre Jan 2023

Diet-Dependent Epigenetic Silencing Of Transposable Elements, Jennifer Mcintyre

Scripps Senior Theses

Rapidly changing dietary conditions are of concern as to how they influence our genome function and overall health. Transposable elements (TEs) are genomic parasites that replicate and move throughout the genome, causing disruptions that have been associated with aging, various diseases, and cancers. To mitigate damage, cells deposit repressive epigenetic marks at TEs to reduce their movement. Interestingly, it has been found that dietary metabolites can act as substrates, cofactors, or inhibitors for the enzymes that deposit epigenetic marks. Accordingly, I hypothesize that altered diets, and thus metabolite profiles, change the silencing of TEs. By rearing flies under different dietary …

Measuring The Influence Of Personal Narrative In Changing Perceptions Of Prisoners, Isabel Dhillon Jan 2023

Measuring The Influence Of Personal Narrative In Changing Perceptions Of Prisoners, Isabel Dhillon

Scripps Senior Theses

With the highest incarceration and recidivism rates, the United States has a large portion of prisoners and ex-prisoners in its society. This subset of the population struggles with reentry, especially with finding stable housing and employment. These struggles are exacerbated by the perceptions of the general public, sourced from stereotypes and stigma that can lead to discrimination. This study examined the differences in attitude changes towards prisoners engendered by using a narrative. This was done by using an ex-convict’s testimonial account of how the struggles involved in the incarceration process and the lack of support within the system led to …

Kirby-Bauer Disc Diffusion Method Indicates Absence Of Antimicrobial Properties In Ariolimax Columbianus Mucus, Elsa Balfe, Elizabeth Kowalski, Stephanie A. Leavitt Jan 2023

Kirby-Bauer Disc Diffusion Method Indicates Absence Of Antimicrobial Properties In Ariolimax Columbianus Mucus, Elsa Balfe, Elizabeth Kowalski, Stephanie A. Leavitt

Humboldt Journal of Microbiology

Antibiotic resistance is a rapidly accelerating epidemic demanding novel approaches. Gastropod mucus has been shown to possess antimicrobial properties and could potentially be used as an ingredient in antibiotic development. However, whether the mucus of Ariolimax columbianus, the banana slug, also displays antimicrobial properties is unknown. In this study, we investigated whether the mucus of A. columbianus is resistant to Escherichia coli (E.coli), Streptococcus aureus (S.aureus), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K.pneumoniae), three medically relevant strains of bacteria. Specimens were collected from a coniferous forest and isolated for downstream mucus extraction. We spread uniform concentrations of our bacteria on Mueller-Hinton agar plates …

Polytech To Polytek: Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Indigenous Science, And The Future Forward Polytechnic University, Cutcha Risling Baldy, Kaitlin P. Reed, Kayla Begay

Humboldt Journal of Social Relations

It is clear from Cal Poly Humboldt’s Polytechnic Prospectus that Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous communities are key parts of what elevates Humboldt’s development of a polytechnic university for the next century. The prospectus demonstrates Humboldt's proposed framework for a different comprehensive polytechnic "will also be informed by Indigenous communities and ways of knowing, as many Native peoples have lived sustainably in their places since time immemorial” (19). There are many considerations when engaging with TEK, especially around sustainable use. It is also important that engagement with TEK and Indigenous science not only center knowledge sharing, but also how …

Wisconsin And The State Of Dairy, Madison Bushman Jan 2023

Wisconsin And The State Of Dairy, Madison Bushman

Marquette Law Review

Wisconsin has earned the nickname America’s Dairyland. While farming has maintained its popularity through the decades, the farms have changed. Small family farms were replaced by large factory farms called Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). CAFOs benefit society by making meat and dairy cheaper. However, the factory farms are major polluters and nuisance producers, so the laws and regulations need to be tightened to hold CAFOs accountable.

This Comment explores how CAFOs rose to dominance due to Wisconsin’s lenient Right to Farm (RTF) law and the potential solutions to the problems from CAFOs. This Comment begins by discussing the history …

2023-January-01-Researchers Discover 'Horned' Turtle, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU News

JOHNSON CITY – The Gray Fossil Site, overseen by the Don Sundquist Center of Excellence in Paleontology at East Tennessee State University, preserves a five-million-year-old ecosystem once home to rhinos, mastodons, red pandas and many more extinct species. Among the most common fossil animals found at the site are turtles.

Researchers have now identified an extinct species of painted turtle, one that is entirely new to science and unique to the Northeast Tennessee site. Scientists named it Chrysemys corniculata, or the “horned painted turtle.” The name comes from a conspicuous pair of pointy projections on the front edge of …

Philippine Philippine, Or The Tropics In Cixous’S Dreaming True, Christian Jil Benitez, Phrae Chittiphalangsri

Filipino Faculty Publications

Hélène Cixous’s oneiric ideation of the philippine (twin almond)—and by extension, her text Philippines (2009/2011)—primarily evokes love, or that force of attraction between two beings in which one can never say where each begins or ends. It is by the virtue of this entanglement that another philippine can be offered to this discourse: the Philippines that is that archipelago which encloses and opens up a particular location and reality within the tropics. This essay attempts to reconsider Cixous’s philippine via the Philippine, through dwelling on the stroke of homophony between these two signifiers and encountering them as materials in and …
