Including Gene Edited Sires In Genetic Evaluations, Leticia P. Sanglard, Garret M. See, Matthew L. Spangler Jan 2023

Including Gene Edited Sires In Genetic Evaluations, Leticia P. Sanglard, Garret M. See, Matthew L. Spangler

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A simulation study investigated and provided potential solutions to practical issues that could arise from including gene-edited sires in routine genetic evaluations. Gene-editing is a technique for adding, deleting, or replacing nucleotides in the genome. Editing nucleotides controlling important socioeconomic traits (e.g., growth, carcass, disease susceptibility) is expected to improve rates of genetic gain. However, targeted alterations of the genome can affect the relationship among individuals and, consequently, introduce bias in Expected Progeny Differences. The current study illustrated that, indeed, Expected Progeny Differences for the progeny of edited sires were underestimated. Consequently, these animals would be less likely to be …

Comparison Of Semi-Confined And Pasture-Based August Calving Beef Cow Systems, Hannah F. Speer, Harvey C. Freetly, M. E. Drewnoski Jan 2023

Comparison Of Semi-Confined And Pasture-Based August Calving Beef Cow Systems, Hannah F. Speer, Harvey C. Freetly, M. E. Drewnoski

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Limited pasture availability and increased pasture rental rates have generated a need to evaluate alternative cow-calf production systems. The current study compared cow and calf performance in two August-calving cow systems that combined corn residue grazing with 1) perennial forage grazing and hay or 2) summer drylot feeding and fall cover crop grazing. Differences in pregnancy rates between systems within year were not observed; however, the effect of production system on cow body condition and calf body weight at different time points varied across years. Overall, cow and calf performance were not negatively impacted in the drylot/cropland system, suggesting that …

Impact Of Planning Horizon Length On Breeding Objectives And Resulting Selection Decisions, Hunter F. Valasek, Bruce L. Golden, Matthew L. Spangler Jan 2023

Impact Of Planning Horizon Length On Breeding Objectives And Resulting Selection Decisions, Hunter F. Valasek, Bruce L. Golden, Matthew L. Spangler

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The weighting of traits in a selection index depends on varying circumstances that can difer among beef producers (e.g. economic factors, breeding systems). The determination of planning horizon is an additional variable that can differ among producers that represents the impact of genetic selection decisions over a gradient of time. A web-based economic index construction platform (iGENDEC) was used in the current study to investigate the implications of planning horizon on relative emphasis values of traits within the breeding goal and potential differences in sire selection decisions. General-purpose indexes were created for three breeding systems under six different …

Levetiracetam Modulates Brain Metabolic Networks And Transcriptomic Signatures In The 5xfad Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease., Charles P Burton, Evgeny J Chumin, Alyssa Y Collins, Scott A Persohn, Kristen D. Onos, Ravi S Pandey, Sara K Quinney, Paul R Territo

Faculty Research 2024

Introduction: Subcritical epileptiform activity is associated with impaired cognitive function and is commonly seen in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The anti-convulsant, levetiracetam (LEV), is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for its ability to reduce epileptiform activity and improve cognitive function in AD. The purpose of the current study was to apply pharmacokinetics (PK), network analysis of medical imaging, gene transcriptomics, and PK/PD modeling to a cohort of amyloidogenic mice to establish how LEV restores or drives alterations in the brain networks of mice in a dose-dependent basis using the rigorous preclinical pipeline of the MODEL-AD Preclinical Testing Core. …

Microtubule Polarity Flaws As A Treatable Driver Of Neurodegeneration, Bridie D. Eckel, Roy Cruz Jr., Erin M. Craig, Peter W. Baas Jan 2023

Microtubule Polarity Flaws As A Treatable Driver Of Neurodegeneration, Bridie D. Eckel, Roy Cruz Jr., Erin M. Craig, Peter W. Baas

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Microtubule disruption is a common downstream mechanism leading to axonal degeneration in a number of neurological diseases. To date, most studies on this topic have focused on the loss of microtubule mass from the axon, as well as changes in the stability properties of the microtubules and/or their tubulin composition. Here we posit corruption of the normal pattern of microtubule polarity orientation as an underappreciated and yet treatable contributor to axonal degeneration. We include computational modeling to fortify the rigor of our considerations. Our simulations demonstrate that even a small deviation from the usual polarity pattern of axonal microtubules is …

Sacred Children, Taboo Tradeoffs, And Distorted Discourses, Sean Hannon Williams Jan 2023

Sacred Children, Taboo Tradeoffs, And Distorted Discourses, Sean Hannon Williams

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article brings together three literatures—bioethics, psychological research on taboo tradeoffs, and family law—to reveal pervasive distortions in current family law scholarship and judicial reasoning. Empirical work in bioethics shows that child welfare occupies a unique moral sphere. People routinely resist making tradeoffs between spheres. Just as sacrificing adult lives for money is taboo, so too is sacrificing child welfare for adult welfare. When faced with the prospect of these tradeoffs, people engage in a predictable set of avoidance and moral mitigation strategies. Across five case studies, this Article shows how child welfare has talismanic qualities which, even in the …

Hsc-Derived Fatty Acid Oxidation In Steady-State And Stressed Hematopoiesis., Jayna J Mistry, Kristian Bowles, Stuart A Rushworth Jan 2023

Hsc-Derived Fatty Acid Oxidation In Steady-State And Stressed Hematopoiesis., Jayna J Mistry, Kristian Bowles, Stuart A Rushworth

Faculty Research 2023

Metabolism impacts all cellular functions and plays a fundamental role in physiology. Metabolic regulation of hematopoiesis is dynamically regulated under steady-state and stress conditions. It is clear that hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) impose different energy demands and flexibility during maintenance compared with stressed conditions. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic regulation in HSCs remain poorly understood. In this review, we focus on defining the role of fatty acid oxidation (FAO) in HSCs. We first review the existing literature describing FAO in HSCs under steady-state hematopoiesis. Next, we describe the models used to examine HSCs under stress conditions, and, …

Climate Change And Sea Level Rise: Assessing Their Impacts On Belize, Carlos Fuller Jan 2023

Climate Change And Sea Level Rise: Assessing Their Impacts On Belize, Carlos Fuller

American University International Law Review

First of all, as we all know, there are three aspects of climate change that we know occur. The first is the increase of global temperatures because of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. As a result of the warming of the oceans, sea levels rise; but even more importantly, additional fresh water is entering the oceans, which is now the predominant factor leading to increased sea-level rates. Finally, a change of the hydrological cycle—because of warmer temperatures, we are seeing more extreme weather events and shifts in precipitation patterns.

The impacts, however, are more important—for example, the impacts of …

Polysemy And The Law, Daniel J. Hemel Jan 2023

Polysemy And The Law, Daniel J. Hemel

Faculty Articles

Polysemy — the existence of multiple related meanings for the same word or phrase — is a frequent phenomenon in legal and lay language. Although polysemy sometimes arises by accident, it also can be strategic: framers of legal rules can advance private and public interests by assigning meanings to terms that are different from — though connected to — the meanings that those terms carry outside the law. Understanding the functions of polysemy can help us design more effective legal rules and can shed light on ways in which legal actors translate language into power. This Article undertakes a comprehensive …

Indigenous And Western Sciences In Carlos Hernandez's The Assimilated Cuban's Guide To Quantum Santeria, Joy Sanchez-Taylor Jan 2023

Indigenous And Western Sciences In Carlos Hernandez's The Assimilated Cuban's Guide To Quantum Santeria, Joy Sanchez-Taylor

Publications and Research

This chapter examines Carlos Hernandez’s The Assimilated Cuban’s Guide to Quantum Santeria as an example of how authors of alternative futurisms can draw on Indigenous knowledge to destabilize Eurowestern perceptions that Western science is more modern and rational than Indigenous knowledge. Joy Sanchez-Taylor argues that Hernandez combines references to Santería and quantum physics to demonstrate parallels between Indigenous knowledge and Eurowestern “rational” science. Ultimately, references in Quantum Santeria to ideas of spiritual healing and nonlinear time demonstrate how authors like Hernandez are working to restore Biskaabiiyang, or a return to self, within science fiction.

Towards Critical Environmental Justice Approach In Multicultural Divided States: Lessons From The Israeli Regulative System, Manal Totry-Jubran Jan 2023

Towards Critical Environmental Justice Approach In Multicultural Divided States: Lessons From The Israeli Regulative System, Manal Totry-Jubran

Fordham Environmental Law Review

This article draws upon the evolving framework of the Critical Environmental Approach in examining the conceptualization and manifestation of the Environmental Justice approach and its pillars within the regulatory system of multicultural and divided societies. These are states comprised of marginalized ethnic and minority groups that frequently face instances of social and environmental injustice. Employing this perspective through a case study show that gradual and anecdotic but unorganized and incoherent incorporation of Environmental Justice pillars lacks the capacity to effectively address long-standing historical environmental injustices and fails to challenge the prevailing social framework. In fact, it runs the risk of …

Does The Supreme Court Of Canada Give A “Freak” About Disability Dignity?: The Inclusion Fallacy 25 Years After Eldridge, Ena Chadha, Emmett Rogers

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

For almost 20 years, the Supreme Court of Canada increasingly rejected the idea of disability as an inherent impairment and progressively endorsed the social model of disability, which recognizes the disabling condition is a consequence of structural and societal factors. However, recent Supreme Court jurisprudence has resurfaced the fallacy of disability being defined by individual defects and deviance. This paper surveys the Court’s disability discrimination jurisprudence from the seminal Eldridge v. British Columbia decision to the splintered Ward v. Quebec decision, examining how the Court appears to be retreating from the social model’s understanding of disability being a product of …

The Virtuous Executive, Alan Z. Rozenshtein Jan 2023

The Virtuous Executive, Alan Z. Rozenshtein

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

As currently conceived, executive power law and scholarship detach the identity of the President from the powers and duties of the presidency. Whether an official was properly dismissed without cause, whether a pardon was validly issued, whether a foreign policy debacle rose to the level of an impeachable offense—the answers to all these questions are not supposed to depend on the President’s personal characteristics. This Article argues that this veil of ignorance is incompatible with a correct understanding of Article II. To properly empower good Presidents and constrain bad ones, constitutional actors must take into account the President’s personal characteristics. …

Sidestepping The Escherian Stairwell: Explicit Establishment As A Method For Circumventing Qualified Immunity's Constitutional Stagnation, Earl Y. Lin Jan 2023

Sidestepping The Escherian Stairwell: Explicit Establishment As A Method For Circumventing Qualified Immunity's Constitutional Stagnation, Earl Y. Lin

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

In recent years, the doctrine of qualified immunity (QI) has gained increased prominence in the public consciousness. Prior to the murder of George Floyd and the resulting nationwide racial justice protests and uprisings, this Supreme Court–made doctrine—and the ways it shields law enforcement officers from legal accountability—was a relatively esoteric legal topic. Yet by the summer of 2020, Americans were marching in the streets with signs calling for QI’s demise, and polling found QI to be disfavored by a margin of two-to-one. This same polling also showed a sharp decline in public confidence that police would use force appropriately, treat …

In Search Of Tabal, Central Anatolia: Iron Age Interaction At Alişar Höyük, Lisa Kealhofer Jan 2023

In Search Of Tabal, Central Anatolia: Iron Age Interaction At Alişar Höyük, Lisa Kealhofer

Faculty Publications

Trajectories of social complexity following socio-political collapse have provided fertile ground for new theoretical and methodological perspectives in archaeology. Here we investigate ceramics from the site of Alişar Höyük, a settlement that was likely part of the Iron Age polity of Tabal. Best known from Assyrian texts, Tabal emerged in central Anatolia after the Late Bronze Age Hittite collapse, but its structure and operation remain enigmatic. Excavated in the 1920s and 1930s, a large sample of ceramics from Alişar has since been curated at the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago. Using multiple perspectives on this Middle Iron Age ceramic sample, …

Ultrasound-Assisted Cavitation Effect On The Biofilm-Forming Ability Of Common Dairy Sporeformers, Taghreed Almalki, Sanjeev Anand Jan 2023

Ultrasound-Assisted Cavitation Effect On The Biofilm-Forming Ability Of Common Dairy Sporeformers, Taghreed Almalki, Sanjeev Anand

Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present

Thermoduric sporeformers survive heat treatment and can form biofilm on contact food surfaces that is difficult to clean and may cause cross contamination to milk products. It was hypothesized that cavitation would influence sporeformers’ ability to attach to contact surfaces and form biofilm. Common dairy sporeformers of Geobacillus stearothermophilus, Bacillus licheniformis, and Bacillus sporothermodurans were individually inoculated in sterile skim milk at the levels of 6.0 log CFU/mL. Inoculated samples were treated by cavitation at 80% amplitudes for 10 min each. Pre and post samples were used to develop biofilms on stainless steel coupons under static conditions. Scanning electron micrograph …
