Mental Health Professionals’ Perceptions Of Referrals To School-Based Mental Services Among Elementary Students, Dr. Adrienne L. Stephens Jan 2023

Mental Health Professionals’ Perceptions Of Referrals To School-Based Mental Services Among Elementary Students, Dr. Adrienne L. Stephens

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractBarriers exist to the referral process for mental-health services among elementary-school students from the perspective of school-based mental-health service professionals. The problem addressed in this study was that lack of mental-health referrals can delay or prevent treatment of mental-health issues, causing those mental-health problems to worsen over time. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of school-based mental-health service professionals regarding these barriers to mental-health referrals. Pescosolido’s theory of the revised network model was the guiding conceptual framework for this study. The study was guided by research questions focused on how school-based mental-health professionals perceived …

Examining Psychosocial Characteristics Of Female Serial Murderers, Rachael Strebel Jan 2023

Examining Psychosocial Characteristics Of Female Serial Murderers, Rachael Strebel

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Previous studies of serial murderers have focused primarily on male serial murderers. The reason for this is unknown, but is primarily reflective of media patterns, gender roles, and social norms that often exclude females from conversations surrounding female serial murder. This study focused on the psychosocial characteristics of female serial murderers. Both solo female serial murderers and serial murderers who worked with one partner were studied. Using a grounded theory approach, based on the review of 11 secondary data case studies, 12 female serial murderers were studied; six who murdered individually and six who murdered within a team. Six main themes …

The Forgotten Sexual And Gender-Based Violence Of The Vietnam-American War: Is Justice Too Late For Vietnamese Victims And Survivors?, Madison P. Bingle Jan 2023

The Forgotten Sexual And Gender-Based Violence Of The Vietnam-American War: Is Justice Too Late For Vietnamese Victims And Survivors?, Madison P. Bingle

Human Rights Brief

“The past, far from disappearing or lying down and being quiet, has an embarrassing and persistent way of returning and haunting us unless it has in fact been dealt with adequately.” —Desmond Tutu

The Vietnam-American War ended nearly fifty years ago. However, the atrocities committed during the war have had a devasting impact on the lives of persons involved long after the conflicts’ end. A particularly marginalized group within survivors and victims of the Vietnam-American War is Vietnamese women who experienced sexual and gender-based violence. And given the specific tactics of warfare employed during this war, including the use of …

High School Science Students’ Cognitive Load Using Virtual Reality Compared To Traditional Instruction, Maria Carmen R. Lagalante Jan 2023

High School Science Students’ Cognitive Load Using Virtual Reality Compared To Traditional Instruction, Maria Carmen R. Lagalante

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Cognitive load is the effort needed to process and store information in memory and can be measured via subjective, physiological, and performance methods. Virtual reality learning environments (VRLEs) enhance science aptitude and motivate students to pursue science careers. Cognitive load is divided into three types: intrinsic, extraneous, and germane. Using cognitive load theory as the framework, the problem addressed through this study was that it is not yet fully understood what the effect of VRLEs is on students’ cognitive load, which can hinder their learning if it is too high. Secondary science education comprises many complex topics with significant levels …

There Is No Such Thing As Circuit Law, Thomas B. Bennett Jan 2023

There Is No Such Thing As Circuit Law, Thomas B. Bennett

Faculty Publications

Lawyers and judges often talk about “the law of the circuit,” meaning the set of legal rules that apply within a particular federal judicial circuit. Seasoned practitioners are steeped in circuit law, it is said. Some courts have imagined that they confront a choice between applying the law of one circuit or another. In its strong form, this idea of circuit law implies that each circuit creates and interprets its own body of substantive law that is uniquely applicable to disputes that arise within the circuit’s borders.

This article argues that the notion of circuit law is nonsensical and undesirable …

Judicial Process And Vigilante Federalism, Charles W. "Rocky" Rhodes, Howard M. Wasserman Jan 2023

Judicial Process And Vigilante Federalism, Charles W. "Rocky" Rhodes, Howard M. Wasserman

Faculty Publications

Jon Michaels’ and David Noll’s "Vigilante Federalism" (Cornell Law Review) decries the explosion of state laws that target certain people (women seeking abortions, trans students seeking to use bathrooms, schools trying to teach about race) and rely on private civil litigation by random "any persons" as the exclusive or primary enforcement mechanism. These laws "deputize private actors to wage and win the culture wars," while subordinating marginalized groups.

But Michaels and Noll conflate well-taken substantive constitutional objections to these laws with procedural issues surrounding the private enforcement mechanism, which is neither unique nor constitutionally problematic. States have long authorized private …

Gurumurthy, Hinrich Staecker, Xuezhong Liu, Zheng-Yi Chen

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

Patients with mutations in the TMPRSS3 gene suffer from recessive deafness DFNB8/DFNB10. For these patients, cochlear implantation is the only treatment option. Poor cochlear implantation outcomes are seen in some patients. To develop biological treatment for TMPRSS3 patients, we generated a knockin mouse model with a frequent human DFNB8 TMPRSS3 mutation. The Tmprss3A306T/A306T homozygous mice display delayed onset progressive hearing loss similar to human DFNB8 patients. Using AAV2 as a vector to carry a human TMPRSS3 gene, AAV2-hTMPRSS3 injection in the adult knockin mouse inner ear results in TMPRSS3 expression in the hair cells and the spiral ganglion neurons. …

Imperial Anxieties And Urbane Transgressions: The Indianos Of Benito Pérez Galdós’S Lo Prohibido, Stacy L. Davis

Decimonónica

Chapter eleven of Lo prohibido (1884-5), “Los jueves de Eloísa,” presents a detailed description of a lavish Restoration era dinner party. As narrator-protagonist José María Bueno de Guzmán outlines the sumptuous dishes, elegant décor, and coy intrigues taking place among the elite society members present, Eloísa’s husband, Pepe Carrillo, lies dying in an adjacent room; his cries of agony cause the distinguished guests to drop their forks and run to his aid; that is, all but one. Colonial entrepreneur Don Alejandro Sánchez Botín remains seated and, as the obese man continues to eat, the sounds of his chewing loudly …

El Canon Patriarcal En La Obra De Dos Poetas Argentinas Del Siglo Xix: Josefina Pelliza De Sagasta Y Silvia Fernández, Ramón Muñiz Sarmiento

“La Juventud No Tiene Historia”: Gender And Consolation In The Corona Fúnebre Elegies And Eulogies Dedicated To Spanish American Señoritas (1858-1896), María Zalduondo Jan 2023

“La Juventud No Tiene Historia”: Gender And Consolation In The Corona Fúnebre Elegies And Eulogies Dedicated To Spanish American Señoritas (1858-1896), María Zalduondo

Decimonónica

When the anonymous editor A. B. C. pens the introduction to Nemecia González y Sardón’s 1867 Corona Fúnebre, he resorts to an unattributed citation stating “youth have no history” to contextualize the scant achievements of the young woman memorialized (6, translation mine). Indeed, most of the forgotten funeral memorials published under the aforementioned title are dedicated to older, accomplished men whose social and political status as presidents of nations, generals, doctors, and celebrity poets assured them a place in history. Young, unmarried women— señoritas—did not normally occupy political or social spaces, outside of the domestic sphere, that would …

Advances In Antimicrobial Peptide Discovery Via Machine Learning And Delivery Via Nanotechnology, Alexa Sowers, Guangshun Wang, Malcolm Xing, Bingyun Li

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been investigated for their potential use as an alternative to antibiotics due to the increased demand for new antimicrobial agents. AMPs, widely found in nature and obtained from microorganisms, have a broad range of antimicrobial protection, allowing them to be applied in the treatment of infections caused by various pathogenic microorganisms. Since these peptides are primarily cationic, they prefer anionic bacterial membranes due to electrostatic interactions. However, the applications of AMPs are currently limited owing to their hemolytic activity, poor bioavailability, degradation from proteolytic enzymes, and high-cost production. To overcome these limitations, nanotechnology has been used …

The Adjudicative State, Adam B. Cox, Emma Kaufman Jan 2023

The Adjudicative State, Adam B. Cox, Emma Kaufman

Faculty Articles

Over the last decade, the Supreme Court has advanced a new vision of the administrative state. The two commandments of administrative law in the Roberts Court are to give the President control over the executive branch and to separate government functions into their proper branches. Scholars often describe these two principles as related pieces of a broader effort to shift policymaking toward elected officials and strip power from the civil service. In the standard account, unitary executive theory and separation-of-powers formalism are complementary ideas, which reflect the Court’s skepticism about bureaucratic governance. This Feature questions that consensus. It argues that …

Effects Of Elevated Extracellular Dopamine On Astrocytes In The Nucleus Accumbens, Mengfan Xia Jan 2023

Effects Of Elevated Extracellular Dopamine On Astrocytes In The Nucleus Accumbens, Mengfan Xia

Theses and Dissertations--Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences

Nucleus accumbens is involved in processing of motivational and affective behaviors and plays a significant role in development and maintenance of substance use. Released from the ventral tegmental area into the nucleus accumbens, the mesolimbic dopamine controls incentive salience and facilitates learning of reinforcement and reward-related motor functions. Recent studies reveal that, in the context of cocaine exposure, dopamine transmission in the ventromedial striatum is pivotal to the regulation of initial drug use. Astrocytes, a major subpopulation of the brain glial cells, are an active component of the so-called tripartite synapse and communicate with neurons through the release of transmitters …
