Environmental Aesthetics And Environmental Justice In Jonathan Edwards’S Personal Narrative And John Woolman’S Journal, Jay David Miller
Environmental Aesthetics And Environmental Justice In Jonathan Edwards’S Personal Narrative And John Woolman’S Journal, Jay David Miller
Faculty Publications - Department of English
This essay examines the relationship between Christian theology, environmental aesthetics, and environmental justice in colonial America. As opposed to the work of secular writers from the early republic like J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur and Thomas Jefferson, the Christian environmental aesthetics of Jonathan Edwards and John Woolman have potential to address questions of environmental justice in American literary history, such as tenant exploitation, African enslavement, and Indigenous displacement. Edwards, however, worked in a pastoral literary tradition, which limited his ability to imagine environmental justice due to his commitment to the doctrine of election. Woolman, on the other hand, worked …

The ‘Natural’ Disaster: How Americans’ Obsession With ‘Natural’ Foods Encourages Misinformation, Stifles Innovation, And Harms The Planet, Jillian Guernsey
UC Law Environmental Journal
Every day, consumers are bombarded with conflicting messages about what they should and should not eat. In an effort to make healthy food choices, consumers often flock to food products that boast “organic,” “all-natural,” or “non-GMO” labels. But are all of these foods really better? In this note, I discuss the confusion surrounding “natural” food and how it has hindered progress toward more productive and sustainable food systems. First, I examine the hazy definition of “natural” foods and explain why consumers continue to demand natural foods despite their environmental impacts. Second, I discuss how consumers’ single-minded focus on natural foods …

Abstract: The figurative forms are representation that are easy to see and verify with the models. The schematic ones, on the other hand, require close and precise observation to discover what are, …

The Unfulfilled Promise Of Self-Determination In Court-Connected Mediation, Peter R. Reilly
The Unfulfilled Promise Of Self-Determination In Court-Connected Mediation, Peter R. Reilly
Florida State University Law Review
In the context of mediation, party self-determination refers to the ability of disputants to have power, control, and autonomy in the process. There are numerous process design questions involved in running a mediation, no matter its subject matter. Consider just one example: "Should the mediation be conducted in person, or virtually?" The answer to this question can have a profound impact on the direction and course of a mediation, including its outcome. Yet, in the context of court-connected mediation, disputing parties are not consistently provided the opportunity to give input on how such process design questions are resolved. In fact, …

Last Chance Tourism. 500 Places to See Before They Disappear. 100 Places to Go Before They Disappear. As these (real) book titles at-test, climate change, often in combination with loss of biodiversity, has created a new kind of ecotourism, which we term eco-necrotourism—the desire to see natural wonders and rare species before they are lost or transformed forever. As a scholarly topic, eco-necrotourism is a small facet of an emerging necessity for climate change law and policy: the need for planners, managers, lawmakers, and policy writers to consider human psychological responses to climate change and its impacts. However, those responses …

When Originalism Failed: Lessons From Tort Law, Donald G. Gifford, Richard C. Boldt, Christopher J. Robinette
Florida State University Law Review
Two recent Supreme Court decisions upended American life. Opinions released on consecutive days in June 2022 overturned the right of reproductive choice nationwide and invalidated a statute regulating the carrying of concealed weapons in New York. The opinions were united by a common methodology. Pursuant to what one scholar terms “thick” originalism, history, as told by the majority, dictated the resolution of constitutional disputes. This Article explores the use of thick originalism in several celebrated torts cases that raised constitutional issues. These cases illustrate two significant kinds of problems associated with a rigid historical approach to constitutional interpretation. The first …

Background/aim: This experimental study aimed to define a biochemical marker that will enable early diagnosis of acute compartment syndrome (ACS) of extremities, a mortal condition that occurs due to trauma. Materials and methods: A total of 15 Wistar rats were included in the study in which saline infusion technique, a clinically compatible ACS model, was applied. After the rats were anesthetized with ketamine-xylazine, the in-compartment pressure of the hind limb was slowly increased with saline delivered through the angiocatheter, and after reaching the target compartment pressure, the pressure level was kept with a rubber tourniquet. The in-compartment pressure level was …

Can Amniotic Fluid Protect Developing Fetal Lungs Against The Harmful Effects Of Oxidative Stress?, Levent Korkmaz, Cumali̇ Alan, İsmai̇l Topal, Mahi̇r Tayfur, Ali̇seydi̇ Bozkurt, Cebrai̇l Gürsul, Osman Baştuğ
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Preterm births cause fetuses to be born without completing the development of their organs.
