The Varieties Of Afterlife Experience: Epistemological And Cultural Implications, Everton De Oliveira Maraldi
The Varieties Of Afterlife Experience: Epistemological And Cultural Implications, Everton De Oliveira Maraldi
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
When parapsychologists talk about survival, they are usually implying personal survival, that is, a process in which memories, motivations, and personality characteristics of a given person somehow persist after bodily death. Are there other conceptions of survival (and of personal identity) that deserve further scientific examination? My purpose with this brief commentary is to expand on Rock et al’s approach by urging survivalists to discuss and investigate further the many different conceptions of (and explanations for) survival. I propose we critically reflect on our theoretical assumptions and their epistemological and cultural consequences.

Decoding Babel: “Ungrieved Futility” And The Unrecognized Order Of The Depression Research Field, Marty Lynn Cooper
Decoding Babel: “Ungrieved Futility” And The Unrecognized Order Of The Depression Research Field, Marty Lynn Cooper
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
The field of depression research and theory is a preparadigmatic potpourri of different orientations without a central, consensus definition of depression. This study attempted to address these issues by investigating the depression sub-literatures (cognitive–behavioral, psychoanalytic, evolutionary, biomedical, phenomenological, existential–humanistic, cybernetic, environmental, and religious–spiritual theories) using a comparative analytic methodology, which allows for comparing disparate fields that do not share a common definitional set by relating them to a third concept, in this study the construct of “ungrieved futility” (UF) as a dynamic model of depression. UF defines the objective and/or subjective experience of the permanent loss of an attachment object …

Gender Stereotypes In Children’S Picture Books: A Study Of Authors, Illustrators, And Main Characters In A Classroom Library Collection, Mildred Sari Bernstein
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental study was to evaluate the gender stereotyping in picture books from a classroom library collection that primary school students use for independent reading in the classroom. Using the Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade fiction books from the classroom library collection from Booksource, this research included 151 books from an original total collection of 900 books of which 491 books were considered fiction. A revised coding sheet, originally from Hamilton et al. (2006), was used to code the books. Seven volunteers and the researcher coded each book with 17 books coded three times. Volunteers were …

Being Your Own Religious Protagonist: The Ramifications Of Religious Guilt, Shame, And Abuse On Women’S Identities, Amanda Rose Farrell
Theses and Dissertations
Through analysis of various literary texts, social media, and television, “Being Your Own Religious Protagonist: The Ramifications of Religious Guilt, Shame, and Abuse on Women’s Identities” will examine the different ways in which women experience religion as children and teenage girls, as well as how their individual and complex religious experiences affect their upbringing and eventual identities as adult women. I am particularly interested in looking at how these experiences affect not only their identities, but their decisions regarding faith and whether or not they wish to remain in the same religious organizations they grew up in. While many who …

Tiered Vocabulary And Educational Television: A Quantitative Content Analysis Of Major Broadcast Television Networks, Kimberly Dimarco
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have studied children’s exposure to television and the impact it has on children’s academic development, and have discovered that educational television programs may positively influence children’s vocabulary growth (Fuenzalida, 2017; Heintz & Wartella, 2012; Larson & Rhan, 2015; Linebarger, Moses, Liebeskind, & McMenamin, 2013; Neuman, Wong, Flynn, & Kaefer, 2019; Neuman, Samudra, Wong, & Kaefer, 2019, Peters & Webb, 2018; Williams & Thomas, 2017). However, few studies have been conducted examining the types of vocabulary words contained in television programming and the frequencies of which these words occur. This study attempted to help enhance the literature by executing a …

Second Grade Language And Literacy Development Through Analysis Of Receptive And Productive Skills On The Nyseslat, Jasmin Varela
Theses and Dissertations
The future success of today’s students and our nation depends on how well prepared our students are to contribute to the globalized world of the 21st century. The population of English Language Learners (ELLs) is exploding in the United States. If students are not given the appropriate language scaffolds to learn English, ELLs will struggle academically, finding themselves ill-prepared for success in the workplace and their roles as active civic participants. This quantitative study focused on three cohorts (n = 25 each) of randomly selected second grade students enrolled in Dual Language Program, Transitional Bilingual Education Program, or English as …
The Role Of Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Efficacy For Course-Taking And High School Graduation Of English Language Learners, Yazmin Torres
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Education may improve English language learners' academic achievement and high school graduation. In particular, it highlights the plight faced by ELLs in high schools regarding quality education that allows them to graduate on time and attend college. The analysis for this study is grounded on the self-efficacy component of Albert Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1977), which focuses on the hypothesis that students are motivated by positive experiences that contributes to their academic success (Hsieh & Kang, 2010). Using Albert Bandura's self-efficacy framework and nationally representative data from the High …

The addition of chemical permeation enhancers (CPE) to a topical dermatological formulation is the prevalent approach to improve permeability of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) across the stratum corneum. Terpenes have been used as CPEs for a long time since they are safe and non-irritating. Limonene is one such terpene majorly found in essential oils extracted from citrus fruits and many varieties of cannabis. Studies performed using Limonene as PE show that Limonene was able to increase the flux of the drug by many folds. Limonene acts as an agonist to transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) receptor – the activity …

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
Nepafenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for the treatment of inflammation associated with cataract surgery. It is marketed as two ophthalmic suspensions—NEVANAC® (0.1% administered three times a day) and ILEVRO® (0.3% administered once a day). The primary mediator of pain relief is amfenac, which is a metabolite of nepafenac. The primary goal of this project was to explain how was the dosing interval affected by changes in formulation properties. The approach incorporated three novel elements. 1) A physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model that is specific to this application for nepafenac and amfenac was constructed, which allowed tracking the specific …
Schizotypy And Theory Of Mind: The Roles Of Emotion Regulation Difficulties And Negative Affect, Richard Andrew Norman Glisker
Schizotypy And Theory Of Mind: The Roles Of Emotion Regulation Difficulties And Negative Affect, Richard Andrew Norman Glisker
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
Theory of mind (ToM) impairment, emotion regulation (ER) difficulties, and negative affect have been identified as major deficits in schizotypy. The existing literature on schizotypy and ToM has yielded inconsistent findings, with some studies finding ToM deficits in overall schizotypy, other studies finding ToM deficits in only specific schizotypy dimensions, and other studies finding no ToM deficits in schizotypy at all. The current study proposed to address these discrepant findings by using a measure of overall schizotypy, the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-Brief Revised (Updated; SPQ-BRU) and a new measure specific schizotypy dimensions, the Multidimensional Schizotypy Scale (MSS). The current study used …
Aggression, Avoidance, Shame And Narcissism In Fragile Masculinity, Israel Zev Meth
Aggression, Avoidance, Shame And Narcissism In Fragile Masculinity, Israel Zev Meth
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
The overwhelming representation of males in physically aggressive acts and violent crime suggests that masculinity contributes to the gender discrepancy. Fragile masculinity, a term denoting the cultural mandate and the individual’s perception that manhood is precarious, has been posited as particularly meaningful in understanding the etiology of aggression and relational avoidance in men. Empirical work suggests that there is a link among these constructs (Vandello, 2013), but the literature has not fully explored variables that may inform or impact these connections. Based on psychodynamic theories of narcissism, shame and aggression, this study aimed to empirically test their impact. Mediation and …
The Avoidance Of Shame: A Function Of Anxiety In Insecure Attachment, Sasha Justine Mann
The Avoidance Of Shame: A Function Of Anxiety In Insecure Attachment, Sasha Justine Mann
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a distressing condition characterized by excessive worry, and treatment outcomes are often unsatisfactory. Research has identified worry as an avoidance mechanism to manage interpersonal and emotional distress. Insecure attachment creates vulnerabilities for GAD, and research has demonstrated that emotion dysregulation plays an explanatory role in the association between insecure attachment and anxiety symptoms. The current study supported the role of emotion dysregulation in GAD for individuals with insecure attachment. Shame, measured explicitly and implicitly, was investigated as an additional mediator in the relationship between insecure attachment and anxiety. A sample of 355 adults completed self-report …

Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
The present study assessed a proposed model developed to explain the relationship between food insecurity and bulimic symptoms (Hazzard et al., 2020). Within this model, body dissatisfaction and food insecurity severity are parallel independent variables. Dietary restraint and shame mediate the relationships between both independent variables and bulimic symptoms (Hazzard et al., 2020). The present sample included 198 adults who were experiencing food insecurity. The majority of participants identified as women (n = 170) and Latina/o (n = 178). Participants completed self-report measures for all variables. On an exploratory basis, body dissatisfaction was measured implicitly. A path analysis was used …

The Impact Of Outdoor Classrooms On Students, Minette Stalheim Johnson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The learning environment for students, which has been indoors for decades, has moved outdoors in many locales. As the stakeholders contemplate the use of outdoor space for learning, questions about its benefit(s) for students have been explored. Many researchers had focused on younger students, although there were studies that looked at grade levels all the way through post-secondary. Researchers wrote about the connection between outdoor classroom time and an increase in student’s well-being and mental health. Studies indicated that students also had an increase in their cognitive functions of attention, self-regulation, and academic progress when the physical setting for their …

Mindfulness-based therapies and exposure therapy also proved effective in …
Culture Of Encounter: A Post-Intentional Phenomenological Exploration Of How Responses To Problematic Student Behavior Come To Be For Elementary Catholic School Educators, Caroline Becker
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
“Phenomenological research has, as its ultimate aim, the fulfillment of our human nature: to become more fully who we are (van Manen, 1997, p. 12).” Rooted in van Manen’s purpose, this study was a post-intentional phenomenological exploration (Vagle, 2018) of how responses to problematic student behavior came to be for Catholic school elementary educators. This study explored the lived experiences and the meaningful connectednesses present when Catholic elementary school educators made decisions about and made sense of their responses to problematic student behavior, and found that teachers’ experiences with and responses to problematic behavior in the classroom is a profoundly …

Faculty Publications
The catalogue for the exhibition "The Light of the Revival: Stained-Glass Designs for Restituted Synagogues in Ukraine by Eugeny Kotlyar" held at Fordham University from September 10-December 10, 2023 offers a broad perspective on the revival of Ukrainian synagogues after Ukraine’s independence. It showcases three sets of stained-glass windows, which were designed by Eugeny Kotlyar and partially implemented in Ukrainian synagogues in the period from 1995 to 2005. Two early works shown here were the first samples of stained-glass designs for modern Ukrainian synagogues, which set a new trend. The first of them—the stained-glass windows for the Kharkiv Choral Synagogue …
