Journal of Materials Exploration and Findings

During a move to the new drilling location, two braces of the upper mast section on a 550 HP oil and gas rig was damaged. When damage is discovered, the rig operating company should conduct a risk analysis related to the damage using the standard used to determine rejection criteria and follow-up repairs. The strength of the rig mast is calculated using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with initial conditions (before damage occurs) where all braces are installed and extreme conditions where neither brace is repaired. The calculation results are then used to assess the risk of reducing the rig mast …

Compassion In The Stem Curriculum: Integrating Emotional Peer Support Within Undergraduates’ Classroom Work, Jared Berezin Jan 2023

Compassion In The Stem Curriculum: Integrating Emotional Peer Support Within Undergraduates’ Classroom Work, Jared Berezin

Educational Studies Dissertations

Students’ academic success and wellbeing are interconnected, yet university classrooms rarely promote mental health. To bridge the divide between academic and social-emotional learning, I introduced a classroom intervention titled the Care Bear Connection, during which students were required to post a message in Slack offering support to their classmates. In this mixed methods study, quantitative data were collected from first-year undergraduates (N = 36) in two team-based engineering courses (intervention group n = 24; comparison group n = 12). A pre- and post-intervention survey assessed students’ beliefs and experiences in their respective course concerning six compassion-related variables: social connectedness, …

Environmental Literary Criticism Approach In Postmodern Thought, Nidal Jabri Tabor, Walid Shaker Al-Naas

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Environmental literary criticism belongs to postmodern criticism, as it meets with postmodern criticism with many urgent and contemporary ecological issues such as the environmental crisis and environmental degradation factors as a result of exploitation and marginalization based on gender, class, ethnic minorities, and post-colonial issues. And human centrality and the centrality of sound and mind and other issues that are important factors in creating an environmental imbalance so that environmental literary criticism meets with many approaches that are compatible with its dark ecological proposal on strengthening ecological relations between the components of the environment, including thematic, cultural criticism and deconstruction. …

Adenosine deaminase acting on RNA 1 (ADAR1) is an RNA-binding protein that deaminates adenosine (A) to inosine (I). A-to-I editing alters post-transcriptional RNA processing, making ADAR1 a crucial regulator of gene expression. Consequently, Adar1 has been implicated in organogenesis. To determine the role of Adar1 in pancreatic development and homeostasis, we conditionally deleted Adar1 from the murine pancreas (Ptf1aCre/+; Adar1Fl/Fl). The resulting mice had stunted growth, likely due to malabsorption associated with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Analyses of pancreata revealed ductal cell expansion, heightened interferon-stimulated gene expression and an increased influx of immune cells. Concurrent deletion of Adar1 and Mavs, a …

BACKGROUND: Hyperphosphorylation and intraneuronal aggregation of the microtubule-associated protein tau is a major pathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain. Of special interest is the effect of cerebral amyloid beta deposition, the second main hallmark of AD, on human tau pathology. Therefore, studying the influence of cerebral amyloidosis on human tau in a novel human tau knock-in (htau-KI) mouse model could help to reveal new details on their interplay.

METHODS: We studied the effects of a novel human htau-KI under fast-progressing amyloidosis in 5xFAD mice in terms of correlation of gene expression data with human brain regions, development of Alzheimer's-like …

Thermogenic Adipose Redox Mechanisms: Potential Targets For Metabolic Disease Therapies, Ashley K. Putnam, G. Andres Contreras, Emilio P. Mottillo Jan 2023

Thermogenic Adipose Redox Mechanisms: Potential Targets For Metabolic Disease Therapies, Ashley K. Putnam, G. Andres Contreras, Emilio P. Mottillo

Hypertension and Vascular Research Articles

Metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), have several negative health outcomes on affected humans. Dysregulated energy metabolism is a key component underlying the pathophysiology of these conditions. Adipose tissue is a fundamental regulator of energy homeostasis that utilizes several redox reactions to carry out the metabolism. Brown and beige adipose tissues, in particular, perform highly oxidative reactions during non-shivering thermogenesis to dissipate energy as heat. The appropriate regulation of energy metabolism then requires coordinated antioxidant mechanisms to counterbalance the oxidation reactions. Indeed, non-shivering thermogenesis activation can cause striking changes in concentrations of both oxidants and …

Ethno-Pedagogical Expressions In The Ndambu Culture Of The Kimaima Community, Papua, Tobias Tobi Nggaruaka, Endah Tri Priyatni, Heri Suwignyo, Wahyudi Siswanto

The Qualitative Report

The Ndambu culture is one of the local wisdoms of the people of Kimaima, Papua, the eastern part of Indonesia, which must be preserved in today's globalized world because cultural values are now being abandoned by the development of globalization. The current generation is also starting to leave the culture of child initiation, so efforts are needed to preserve culture in traditional ways. Preserving cultural values has importance because it contains an ethno-pedagogy about parenting children to be personally responsible, independent, and autonomous. Even though there have been many studies on the local wisdom system of the community, there lies …

Albinism is a group of inherited disorders mainly affecting skin, hair and eyes. Here we identify a de novo point mutation, p.R210C, in the TPCN2 gene which encodes Two Pore Channel 2 (TPC2) from a patient with albinism. TPC2 is an endolysosome and melanosome localized non-selective cation channel involved in regulating pigment production. Through inside-out recording of plasma membrane targeted TPC2 and direct recording of enlarged endolysosomal vacuoles, we reveal that the R210C mutant displays constitutive channel activation and markedly increased affinity to PI(3,5)P2. Mice harboring the homologous mutation, R194C, also exhibit hypopigmentation in the fur and skin, as well …

The renal collecting duct is known to play a critical role in many physiological processes, including systemic water-electrolyte homeostasis, acid-base balance, and the salt sensitivity of blood pressure. ClC-K2 (ClC-Kb in humans) is a Cl--permeable channel expressed on the basolateral membrane of several segments of the renal tubule, including the collecting duct intercalated cells. ClC-Kb mutations are causative for Bartters' syndrome type 3 manifested as hypotension, urinary salt wasting, and metabolic alkalosis. However, little is known about the significance of the channel in the collecting duct with respect to the normal physiology and pathology of Bartters' syndrome. In this review, …

Radiation-Induced Senescence: Therapeutic Opportunities, Jae Ho Kim, Stephen L. Brown, Marcia N. Gordon Jan 2023

Radiation-Induced Senescence: Therapeutic Opportunities, Jae Ho Kim, Stephen L. Brown, Marcia N. Gordon

Radiation Oncology Articles

The limitation of cancer radiotherapy does not derive from an inability to ablate tumor, but rather to do so without excessively damaging critical tissues and organs and adversely affecting patient's quality of life. Although cellular senescence is a normal consequence of aging, there is increasing evidence showing that the radiation-induced senescence in both tumor and adjacent normal tissues contributes to tumor recurrence, metastasis, and resistance to therapy, while chronic senescent cells in the normal tissue and organ are a source of many late damaging effects. In this review, we discuss how to identify cellular senescence using various bio-markers and the …

Sheep Preference For Fresh Leaf And Stem Of Seven Accessions Of Tedera Was Not Influenced By Prior Grazing Experience And Wilting Made No Difference, Justin Hardy, Chris Oldham, Phil Vercoe, Dean Thomas, John Milton, Daniel Real, Andrew Van Burgel, Eric Dobbe Jan 2023

Sheep Preference For Fresh Leaf And Stem Of Seven Accessions Of Tedera Was Not Influenced By Prior Grazing Experience And Wilting Made No Difference, Justin Hardy, Chris Oldham, Phil Vercoe, Dean Thomas, John Milton, Daniel Real, Andrew Van Burgel, Eric Dobbe

Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles

Tedera is a valuable high-quality forage for sheep during summer–autumn. There is evidence that prior grazing experience of novel forages influences preference and haymaking of tedera improves preference by goats. In the first experiment, it was hypothesised that the voluntary feed intake (VFI) of fresh leaves and stems of tedera by sheep would be greater for experienced vs. naïve sheep. In the second experiment, it was hypothesised that the VFI of naïve sheep fed wilted leaves and stems of tedera would be greater than fresh leaves and stems of tedera. To test these hypotheses, adult Merino sheep were fed seven …

Resurrecting Olympus, Jordan Ashley Miller Jan 2023

Resurrecting Olympus, Jordan Ashley Miller

Masters Theses

The objective of this creative project was to reintroduce Greek mythology to the public, adapting the ancient tales to appeal to an ever-evolving world. In order to do the myths justice, it was important to examine adaptations and interpretations over the centuries to determine the philosophical trajectory of mythology. My studies unearthed a diverse portfolio of academic perspectives ranging from the likes of the more formal philosopher Thomas Bullfinch of the 1900s, to the modern, comedy-infused commentator Stephen Fry. Each voice revealed something new to consider. Synthesizing these varying positions into a holistic narrative, I set out to pen a …

Journey Through The In-Between: A Haibun Anthology, Jonathan Andrew Painter Jan 2023

Journey Through The In-Between: A Haibun Anthology, Jonathan Andrew Painter

Masters Theses

The critical paper addresses the haiku and haibun of the seventeenth-century Japanese poet Matsuo Basho and argues that his poetry demonstrated a high level of ingenuity and flexibility. Accordingly, it serves as a model that can be reappropriated by modern poets writing in a different language and context at a distance of hundreds of years. The haibun anthology entitled "Journey Through the In-Between" is divided into two main parts. Part One presents the ambiguity that I have discovered on my mental and spiritual journey of faith. It is divided into five chapters. Each chapter’s title and content features two juxtaposed …

The Fire Behind My Passion: Thief's Fire, Jessica Lacey Hackett

Masters Theses

Every day, I am bombarded by vulgarity of every kind through the people around me, the television, music, and sadly literature as well. The fantasy genre is a genre that is filled with made-up worlds and creatures that come from the awe-inspiring human imagination. However, it is not untouched by the vulgarity of this world. Fantasy novels have become just as filled with foul language and sex as the so-called “trashy romance” novels have in them. What is most disturbing about all this is that the vulgarity has leaked into the fantasy novels made for teens. I aim to create …
