Loss Of Peroxiredoxin Iv Protects Mice From Azoxymethane/Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Colorectal Cancer Development, Pratik Thapa, Hong Jiang, Na Ding, Yanning Hao, Aziza Alshahrani, Eun Young Lee, Junichi Fujii, Qiou Wei

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Peroxiredoxin IV (Prx4), a typical two-cysteine-containing member of the peroxidase family, functions as an antioxidant to maintain cellular redox homeostasis through the reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via cycles of oxidation–reduction reactions. Under oxidative stress, all Prxs including Prx4 are inactivated as their catalytic cysteines undergo hyperoxidation, and hyperoxidized two-cysteine Prxs can be exclusively repaired and revitalized through the reduction cycle catalyzed by sulfiredoxin (Srx). Previously, we showed that Prx4 is a preferred substrate of Srx, and knockout of Srx in mice leads to resistance to azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS)-induced colon carcinogenesis. To further understand the significance of the …

Gender Violence Or Tradition?: Media Coverage Of Child/Forced Marriage In Us Newspapers, Manjusha Gupte, Sundari Anitha

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The news media play an important role in influencing public perceptions and raising awareness of an issue. This research analyzes media framing of child/forced marriage through an examination of six US national newspapers over a ten-year period. It probes how narratives are constructed based on issue perception, blame attribution, and protagonist perceptions. It finds that print media has afforded increasing coverage to minimum marriage age legislation in the US. Mediated by advocacy organizations and survivors, the discourse surrounding child marriage has used a thematic frame as a legal issue with the onus on the state to amend laws facilitating child …

Conflict Of Laws? Tensions Between Antitrust And Labor Law, Matthew Dimick Mar 2023

Conflict Of Laws? Tensions Between Antitrust And Labor Law, Matthew Dimick

University of Chicago Law Review

Not long ago, economists denied the existence of monopsony in labor markets. Today, scholars are talking about using antitrust law to counter employer wagesetting power. While concerns about inequality, stagnant wages, and excessive firm power are certainly to be welcomed, this sudden about-face in theory, evidence, and policy runs the risk of overlooking some important concerns. The purpose of this Essay is to address these concerns and, more critically, to discuss some tensions between antitrust and labor law, a more traditional method for regulating labor markets. Part I addresses a question raised in the very recent literature, about why antitrust …

Too many options can be a problem, which is the case for Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). As there are many such APIs, with many more being introduced periodically, it raises the problem of choosing which API to be recommended. Furthermore, numerous APIs are commonly used together with other complementary third-party APIs. It can be challenging for developers to understand how to use each API and to remember all the complementary APIs for the API they want to use. Therefore, an accurate API recommendation approach can improve developers' efficiency in implementing certain functionality. Several approaches have been developed to automatically recommend …

Preserving Nature In New York City: Nyc Parks’ Forever Wild Program, Georgina Cullman, Novem Auyeung, Jennifer Greenfeld, Kristen L. King, Marit Larson

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban biodiversity has increasingly been recognized as providing multiple local, regional, and even global benefits. In New York City (NYC), conservation and planning professionals in the Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks) pursued biodiversity protection through the creation of a “Forever Wild” program in 2001, which designated and aimed to protect 8,700 acres of the largest, most ecologically valuable natural areas across City parkland. In 2018-2020, NYC Parks’ Natural Resources Group (NRG) expanded the program’s extent, resulting in 2,500 acres added to the Forever Wild program, for a total of over 12,300 acres. These additions reflect new acquisitions to …

Balancing Human Development With Wildlife Habitat And Connectivity Through The Creation Of Land Use Regulations For Private Property In Los Angeles, California, Kat Superfisky Mar 2023

Balancing Human Development With Wildlife Habitat And Connectivity Through The Creation Of Land Use Regulations For Private Property In Los Angeles, California, Kat Superfisky

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urban areas are uniquely positioned to have a significant impact on biodiversity and the health and resilience of ecosystems and therefore play an essential role in advancing conservation goals. Unlike more “wildland” ecosystems, urban ecosystems are not solely owned and/or managed by public entities or with the sole goal of ecosystem restoration. The important plants, animals and ecosystems in cities are scattered across open spaces and public parks that are already protected and being managed for conservation, as well as on private properties that often comprise the majority of land in cities, which supports the need to address biodiversity and …

Ichthyofauna Of The Los Angeles River, Sabrina L. Drill, Jason Post, Rosi Dagit, Andres Aguilar

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

The Los Angeles River is a highly modified urban system. Upper tributaries of the watershed are located in Angeles National Forest and are in a relatively natural state, but below the forest boundary the tributaries and the mainstem consist of a series of completely channelized sections with a concrete bottom that includes a low-flow channel and vertical walls, sections where there are graded berms and a substrate that was either not stabilized with a concrete substrate, or where enough sediment has accumulated to provide a “soft-bottom” with vegetation, boulders, and variation in flow, and off-channel impoundments. Here we provide the …

A Collaborative Social-Ecological Research Approach To Inform & Address Urban Coyote Management Challenges, Melinda J. Weaver, Anna Monterastelli, Eric G. Strauss, Michele Romolini

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Coyotes (Canis latrans) play an important mesopredator role in urban habitats and provide valuable ecosystem services, but also risk factors to human safety. Because of rare, but high-profile instances of human-coyote conflict, urban coyotes are often perceived only as a nuisance, or even dangerous, to human populations and their domestic animals. This tension between urban wildlife and communities can result in policy and management decisions that are not effective or beneficial to either population. We believe that effective urban coyote management requires an understanding of the resident coyotes in a given city, as well as the human residents’ …

The Role Of Preproglucagon Peptides In Regulating Β-Cell Morphology And Responses To Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes, Deanna M. Arble, Chelsea R. Hutch, Hannah Hafner, Daria Stelmak, Kyle Leix, Joyce Sorrell, Joshua W. Pressler, Brigid Gregg, Darleen A. Sandoval Mar 2023

The Role Of Preproglucagon Peptides In Regulating Β-Cell Morphology And Responses To Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes, Deanna M. Arble, Chelsea R. Hutch, Hannah Hafner, Daria Stelmak, Kyle Leix, Joyce Sorrell, Joshua W. Pressler, Brigid Gregg, Darleen A. Sandoval

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Insulin secretion from β-cells is tightly regulated by local signaling from preproglucagon (Gcg) products from neighboring α-cells. Physiological paracrine signaling within the microenvironment of the β-cell is altered after metabolic stress, such as high-fat diet or the β-cell toxin, streptozotocin (STZ). Here, we examined the role and source of Gcg peptides in β-cell function and in response to STZ-induced hyperglycemia. We used whole body Gcg null (GcgNull) mice and mice with Gcg expression either specifically within the pancreas (GcgΔPanc) or the intestine (GcgΔIntest). With lower doses of STZ exposure, insulin levels were …

Theology Undergraduate Work

A high school student attends a youth group at a local church in his neglected neighborhood. He participates in Bible studies, youth group events, and experiences an altar-call moment to accept Christ into his heart. The church was there to help him live like Christ and grow spiritually. He gets to know God at an early age through the church; however, as he graduates high school, the connection with the church starts to dwindle. One day, he finds himself in jail, still struggling with his life's physical, mental, and social factors. This is the true story of Nick, a young …

The Coming Of Age Of Nucleic Acid Vaccines During Covid-19, Halie M. Rando, Ronan Lordan, Likhitha Kolla, Elizabeth Sell, Alexandra J. Lee, Nils Wellhausen, Amruta Naik, Jeremy P. Kamil, Anthony Gitter, Casey S. Greene

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

In the 21st century, several emergent viruses have posed a global threat. Each pathogen has emphasized the value of rapid and scalable vaccine development programs. The ongoing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has made the importance of such efforts especially clear. New biotechnological advances in vaccinology allow for recent advances that provide only the nucleic acid building blocks of an antigen, eliminating many safety concerns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these DNA and RNA vaccines have facilitated the development and deployment of vaccines at an unprecedented pace. This success was attributable at least in part to broader shifts …

Deus Ex Machina: Contemporary Argentina's Literature Of Infrastructure, D. Bret Leraul Mar 2023

Deus Ex Machina: Contemporary Argentina's Literature Of Infrastructure, D. Bret Leraul

Faculty Journal Articles

This article traces the growth of representations of literary infrastructure in Argentinean literature parallel to the rise of global finance capital and the successive price and debt crises it has visited upon the Argentinean economy since the restoration of liberal democracy in 1983. I argue that as Argentina’s robust mid-century literary institution has declined, the concrete organizations that constitute its infrastructure—for example publishing houses, educational institutions, cultural bureaucracies—become fodder for literary fiction. In short, literature represents its own infrastructure when that infrastructure comes to present a problem. My claim rests at once on the logics of the literary institution and …

Identifying A Clinical Informatics Or Electronic Health Record Expert Witness For Medical Professional Liability Cases, Dean F Sittig, Adam Wright Mar 2023

Identifying A Clinical Informatics Or Electronic Health Record Expert Witness For Medical Professional Liability Cases, Dean F Sittig, Adam Wright

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: The health care field is experiencing widespread electronic health record (EHR) adoption. New medical professional liability (i.e., malpractice) cases will likely involve the review of data extracted from EHRs as well as EHR workflows, audit logs, and even the potential role of the EHR in causing harm.

OBJECTIVES: Reviewing printed versions of a patient's EHRs can be difficult due to differences in printed versus on-screen presentations, redundancies, and the way printouts are often grouped by document or information type rather than chronologically. Simply recreating an accurate timeline often requires experts with training and experience in designing, developing, using, and …

Fragments Of The Dark: Essays On Heritage, Anxiety, And Spirit, Nicholas Diaz Mar 2023

Fragments Of The Dark: Essays On Heritage, Anxiety, And Spirit, Nicholas Diaz

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

“I am the war my family forgot to mention.” With these words from my essay, “My Parents Never Taught Me About My Ancestors,” I stake my position in the struggle for happiness. In a series of five experimental essays, I aim to reflect upon my assimilated white, working-class upbringing in the US Midwest and the emptiness with which it has left me. Deploying fragmentary essay forms, elements of memoir, question-and-answer, quotation, prayer, and other devices, I hope to pose destabilizing questions about our understandings of whiteness, masculinity, ancestry, and faith. Questions which, I hope, can help us (particularly those of …

"The Blackbird Girls": Designing A Four Week Novel Unit For Upper Elementary And Middle Grades, While Navigating Teaching In An Ever-Changing Digital World, Ashley Kallhoff

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

As a future teacher in an increasing digital world, I wanted to create an online curriculum I could use in my future classroom, students all over the world could use, and other teachers could implement in their own classroom. Taking all of this into consideration, I have designed a digital four-week, 20-day, novel unit for upper elementary and middle grades with social studies and language arts dual focus. The novel I chose was a historical fiction young adult text titled The Blackbird Girls by Anne Blankman. This novel follows the story of two young girls, one that is Jewish and …

Sentinel Lymph Node Identification Using Contrast Lymphosonography: A Systematic Review, Priscilla Machado, Ji-Bin Liu, Flemming Forsberg Mar 2023

Sentinel Lymph Node Identification Using Contrast Lymphosonography: A Systematic Review, Priscilla Machado, Ji-Bin Liu, Flemming Forsberg

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

The sentinel lymph node (SLN) concept hypothesizes that metastatic cancer cells will spread through the lymphatic system to the SLN being the first one in the lymphatic chain to receive the metastatic cells, indicating that if the SLN is free of cancer cells the rest of the lymphatic chain is also without metastatic disease. Diagnostic ultrasound imaging (US) has been used to evaluate lymph nodes (LN) to determine level of suspicion and to guide LN biopsies. However, conventional US cannot be used for lymphatic mapping, which requires administration of a tracer. This has been changed with the use of contrast-enhanced …

Understanding Environmental Art: A Case Study Of Jason Decaires Taylor's Coral Greenhouse (2019), Laura Dean Hinson Mar 2023

Understanding Environmental Art: A Case Study Of Jason Decaires Taylor's Coral Greenhouse (2019), Laura Dean Hinson

Theses

This thesis highlights the need for a new way to analyze environmental art. In the past, environmental artwork has been discussed in terms of the abstract concepts that drove their creation and the role they played in moving artists outside of the gallery space in the1960s and 70s. However, in recent years environmental artists are increasingly driven by themes of environmental conservation and preservation, using scientific research as the basis of their designs. Because of the shift in focus, developing a new way to discuss environmental art that takes into consideration the influence scientific research has on art production and …

The Complication Of Cyber Manhunt: How Cyber Manhunt Further Complicated The Ethical Conflict Between Breaching The Confidentiality And Endangering The Society In Face Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Yen-Chang Chen, Yen-Yuan Chen

Journal of Medical Education

While health care and public health workers are working on measures to mitigate the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an unprecedentedly large number of people spending much more time indoors, and relying heavily on the Internet as their lifeline. What has been overlooked is the influence of the increasing online activities on public health issues. In this article, we pointed out how a large-scale online activity called cyber manhunt may threaten to offset the efficacy of contact tracing investigation, a public health intervention considered highly effective in limiting further transmission in the early stage of a highly contagious disease outbreak such …
