South Korean Government Policy In The Development Of K-Pop, Kamon Butsaban Mar 2023

South Korean Government Policy In The Development Of K-Pop, Kamon Butsaban

Journal of Letters

This study analyzes the Korean government’s K-Pop policies by period to shed light on the Korean government’s role and how its policies have contributed to K-Pop’s success.

The Kim Dae-jung government laid the foundation for the Korean cultural industry to grow by establishing laws, systems, and organizations; building necessary infrastructure; and increasing budget allocation. The Roh Moo-hyun government set the development of the cultural industry as a core task and implemented specific, in-depth policies for different areas. The Lee Myung-bak government actively pursued K-Pop–related policies, such as facilitating and hosting K-Pop events, based on the principles of competition and concentration. …

Against God, Good Faith, And Reason: The 1381 Peasants’ Revolt In Cambridge, Reagan T. Vernon Mar 2023

Against God, Good Faith, And Reason: The 1381 Peasants’ Revolt In Cambridge, Reagan T. Vernon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper focuses on the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 as it occurred in the university town of Cambridge. The historiographic understanding of the Cambridge wing of the Peasants’ Revolt has categorized it as foundationally motivated by town and gown resentment. Using legal records and chronicle accounts, this thesis demonstrates that the crowd did not exclusively target the university. As one of the town’s wealthier and increasingly authoritative institutions, the university and its constituents were targets in the uprising—but this was in addition to several attacks on local churches, monastic institutions, and manors. These attacks against higher authorities reflect a loss …

Of Mētis And Cuttlefish: Employing Collective Mētis As A Theoretical Framework For Marginalized Communities, Justiss Wilder Burry

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This LGBTQ+ rhetoric of health and medicine (RHM) community-based research explores the ways community members and queer community participants communicate about potential intimate partner selection in Central Florida. The dissertation introduces the theoretical framework of “collective mētis” as a way to analyze and discuss community communication against Florida’s required HIV disclosure laws that attempt to medicalize this and control this community’s intimate partner selection. Research questions include: 1) How do people in counterpublic enclaves (Chávez, 2011) communicate their potential intimate partner desires to others in the community including the types of disclosures they express and negotiate, and how? 2) How …

A Solution Technique Of Transportation Problem In Neutrosophic Environment, Manas Karak, Animesh Mahata, Mahendra Rong, Supriya Mukherjee, Sankar Prasad Mondal, Said Broumi, Banamali Roy

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications

In this article, we presented a ranking system based on the sign distance in a new direction, such that to compare different single-valued neutrosophic numbers (SVN-numbers), a decision maker has the chance of flexibility. We also developed some important definitions, like level-(α,β,γ) neutrosophic point, and some properties related to the sign distance ranking function. Finally, the sign distance ranking function is applied to solving the neutrosophic transportation problem (NTP) with SVN-number converted into a transportation problem (TP) with crisp data, and to illustrate the appropriateness of this function, we gave two numerical illustrations.

Standing On The Shoulders Of Llcs: Tax Entity Status And Decentralized Autonomous Organizations, Samuel D. Brunson Mar 2023

Standing On The Shoulders Of Llcs: Tax Entity Status And Decentralized Autonomous Organizations, Samuel D. Brunson

Georgia Law Review

Since the formation of the first decentralized autonomous organization in 2016, their use has exploded. Thousands of DAOs now try to take advantage of smart contracts to solve a problem that plagues business entities: the gulf between ownership and management. Armed with smart contracts and requiring token-holders to vote on any change in strategy, DAOs dispense with the management layer so necessary in traditional business entities.

DAOs owe their existence to technology. Without blockchain, without cryptocurrency, and without smart contracts, there would be no DAOs. But they owe their explosive to something much more unexpected: Treasury regulations.

In the wake …

Longitudinal Ultrasound Imaging And Network Modeling In Rats Reveal Sex-Dependent Suppression Of Liver Regeneration After Resection In Alcoholic Liver Disease, Benjamin K. Barnhart, Toshiki Kan, Ankita Srivastava, Corinne E. Wessner, John Waters, Manju Ambelil, John R. Eisenbrey, Jan B. Hoek, Rajanikanth Vadigepalli

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Liver resection is an important surgical technique in the treatment of cancers and transplantation. We used ultrasound imaging to study the dynamics of liver regeneration following two-thirds partial hepatectomy (PHx) in male and female rats fed via Lieber-deCarli liquid diet protocol of ethanol or isocaloric control or chow for 5–7 weeks. Ethanol-fed male rats did not recover liver volume to the pre-surgery levels over the course of 2 weeks after surgery. By contrast, ethanol-fed female rats as well as controls of both sexes showed normal volume recovery. Contrary to expectations, transient increases in both portal and hepatic artery blood flow …

Consumption of the total Western diet (TWD) in mice has been shown to increase gut inflammation, promote colon tumorigenesis, and alter fecal microbiome composition when compared to mice fed a healthy diet, i.e., AIN93G (AIN). However, it is unclear whether the gut microbiome contributes directly to colitis-associated CRC in this model. The objective of this study was to determine whether dynamic fecal microbiota transfer (FMT) from donor mice fed either the AIN basal diet or the TWD would alter colitis symptoms or colitis-associated CRC in recipient mice, which were fed either the AIN diet or the TWD, using a 2 …

Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) limits the therapeutic benefit of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) and requires immunosuppressive prophylaxis that compromises antitumor and antipathogen immunity. OX40 is a costimulatory receptor upregulated on circulating T cells in aGVHD and plays a central role in driving the expansion of alloreactive T cells. Here, we show that OX40 is also upregulated on T cells infiltrating GVHD target organs in a rhesus macaque model, supporting the hypothesis that targeted ablation of OX40+ T cells will mitigate GVHD pathogenesis. We thus created an OX40-specific cytotoxic receptor that, when expressed on human T cells, enables selective …

Introduction: The cocktail-party problem refers to the difficulty listeners face when trying to attend to relevant sounds that are mixed with irrelevant ones. Previous studies have shown that solving these problems relies on perceptual as well as cognitive processes. Previously, we showed that speech-reception thresholds (SRTs) on a cocktail-party listening task were influenced by genetic factors. Here, we estimated the degree to which these genetic factors overlapped with those influencing cognitive abilities.

Methods: We measured SRTs and hearing thresholds (HTs) in 493 listeners, who ranged in age from 18 to 91 years old. The same individuals completed a cognitive test …

“I’Ve Got Out At Last”: The Subversion Of Hegemonic Masculinity In Charlotte Perkins Gilman’S “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Ahmad Qabaha, Bilal Hamamra Mar 2023

“I’Ve Got Out At Last”: The Subversion Of Hegemonic Masculinity In Charlotte Perkins Gilman’S “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Ahmad Qabaha, Bilal Hamamra

An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)

Drawing on Raewyn Connell’s concept “hegemonic masculinity” and engaging the critical line of feminism, this article argues that Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” unearths the institutional dynamics that sustain the masculine hegemonic discourse. This article reads this short story as counter-hegemony, the narrator of which critiques what Gramsci called “manufacture of consent”, wherein ideas and beliefs are shaped, and hegemony is reproduced, through culture. We argue that Gilman accounts for the ways in which gender hierarchy is maintained through consent rather than force, and she endorses a struggle over ideas and beliefs to create counter-hegemony that contests socially-constructed dominant ideas and …

Toxic Criminals: Prosecuting Individuals For Hazardous Waste Crimes Under The United States Resource Conservation And Recovery Act, Dr. Joshua Ozymy, Dr. Melissa Jarrell Ozymy

Sustainable Development Law & Policy

The U.S. Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (“RCRA”) contains criminal provisions which allow prosecutors to seek substantial penalties when individuals commit hazardous waste crimes involving significant harm or culpable conduct. However, our empirical understanding of enforcement outcomes is limited. We used content analysis of 2,728 criminal prosecutions derived from U.S. EPA criminal investigations from 1983 to 2021 and examined all prosecutions of individual defendants for RCRA violations. Our results show that 222 prosecutions were adjudicated, with over $72.9 million in monetary penalties, 755 years of probation, and 451 years of incarceration levied at sentencing. Seventeen percent of prosecutions centered on …

An Ecosystem Modelling Approach To Rehabilitating Semi-Desert Rangelands Of North Horr, Kenya, G. A. Olukoye, W. N. Wamicha, J. I. Kinyamario Mar 2023

An Ecosystem Modelling Approach To Rehabilitating Semi-Desert Rangelands Of North Horr, Kenya, G. A. Olukoye, W. N. Wamicha, J. I. Kinyamario

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Decreased rainfall, recurrent droughts and increased anthropogenic activities have led to a dramatic increase in wind erosion on pastoral lands of North Horr resulting in the reactivation of the once-stable sand dunes. This has degraded the vegetation and impoverished the local community. Mobile sand has a severe impact on dry season grazing areas (Omar & Abdal, 1994) and, therefore, affects pastoral livestock production. In North Horr, Suaeda monoica is important in camel production and for stabilising sand dunes but it has been over-utilized over the years. The objective of this study was to use ecosystem modelling approaches to examine the …

Riparian Management In Intensive Grazing Systems For Improved Biodiversity And Environmental Quality: Productive Grazing, Healthy Rivers, S. R. Aarons, M. Jones-Lennon, P. Papas, N. Ainsworth, F. Ede, J. Davies Mar 2023

Riparian Management In Intensive Grazing Systems For Improved Biodiversity And Environmental Quality: Productive Grazing, Healthy Rivers, S. R. Aarons, M. Jones-Lennon, P. Papas, N. Ainsworth, F. Ede, J. Davies

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Within high rainfall intensive grazing systems of southern Victoria, riparian zones are often degraded due to vegetation clearing, stock access and inappropriate farm management. Streams in these landscapes often have poor water quality and reduced biodiversity due to degraded terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Improved management of riparian zones depends on developing tools and practices for integration into productive grazing systems. This paper describes the approaches used and the tools developed in the ‘Productive Grazing, Healthy Rivers: Improving riparian and in-stream biodiversity’ project.

Effects Of Disturbance And Conspecific Negative Density Dependence On Forest Composition And Diversity: A Simulation-Based Approach, David M. Chan, Benjamin S. Ramage, Matthew E. Mills Mar 2023

Effects Of Disturbance And Conspecific Negative Density Dependence On Forest Composition And Diversity: A Simulation-Based Approach, David M. Chan, Benjamin S. Ramage, Matthew E. Mills

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Forests provide a wide range of services to humans and create critical habitat for countless species. Tree species composition and diversity, key attributes of forest health and identity, are influenced by both disturbance and conspecific negative density dependence (CNDD). These factors have been thoroughly researched in isolation, but much less is known about how they interact. We present results of a simulation model constructed to investigate the interactions of variable CNDD strengths and disturbance types. We found that while CNDD consistently increased diversity, the magnitude of this effect was heavily influenced by the disturbance regime. The difference between weak and …

Second Language Acquiescence Of Multilingual Students In Tanzania, Ann E. Roemer Mar 2023

Second Language Acquiescence Of Multilingual Students In Tanzania, Ann E. Roemer

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

This research, conducted at a major university in Tanzania, investigated the personal experiences of multilingual students vis-à-vis the government's language policy requiring Swahili as the language of instruction (LoI) at the primary level and English at the secondary level. The participants, who spoke 25 different languages as their L1, were placed into 49 different language groups and asked to write what they remembered about the language policy where they attended school. The data show that Gramsci's cultural hegemony is occurring in Tanzania. The 'common sense' is that people truly believe English is symbolic of prestige and power–even though few people …
