The Mindful Campus: Organizational Structure And Culture, Linda Coutant, Karen Caldwell Mar 2023

The Mindful Campus: Organizational Structure And Culture, Linda Coutant, Karen Caldwell

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

This case study of a campus known to incorporate contemplative practices in the curriculum and co-curriculum explored how a mindful campus is operated as well as what organizational structures and cultures are in place to support the use of contemplative practices. Supportive structures include physical structures (i.e., a labyrinth and meditation room), non-physical structures (i.e., a faculty learning community and student meditation club), and financial structures (i.e., a special professorate and internal grants). Cultural themes that emerged from participants’ description of the campus culture focused on embodiment of the liberal arts philosophy, community, and connection. All of Tierney’s (2008) aspects …

Contemplative Environmental Studies: Pedagogy For Self And Planet, Paul Wapner Mar 2023

Contemplative Environmental Studies: Pedagogy For Self And Planet, Paul Wapner

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

Environmental problems are among the most profound challenges humanity has ever faced. How can we best educate students in this moment of environmental intensification? What skills, virtues, and sensibilities do they need to investigate, appreciate, and respond to environmental degradation? This article makes the case for adding contemplative practices to the pedagogical toolbox. It explains the connection between our internal lives and environmental degradation, and how contemplative practices can unlock faculties for advancing environmental inquiry and engagement. It describes how contemplative practices can, for instance, help students analyze the causes of environmental harm by enabling them to notice internal grasping, …

Contemplative Practices And Teaching Scitovsky’S The Joyless Economy, Daniel P. Barbezat Mar 2023

Contemplative Practices And Teaching Scitovsky’S The Joyless Economy, Daniel P. Barbezat

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

In order to make choices that lead to our well-being, we need discernment and understanding to determine the conditions that bring about positive outcomes and the awareness to recognize them in order to act in ways that are congruent with our well-being. This is a paper exploring the context of teaching undergraduates to understand the expression of their own desires in markets. In this paper, I will describe an exercise that illustrates the concepts of Tibor Scitovsky’s work on well-being. Students experience the concepts outlined by Scitovsky and come to understand them more deeply through engaging with practices that allow …

Classroom As Dojo: Contemplative Teaching And Learning As Martial Art, Heesoon Bai, Sean Park, Avraham Cohen Mar 2023

Classroom As Dojo: Contemplative Teaching And Learning As Martial Art, Heesoon Bai, Sean Park, Avraham Cohen

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

This paper identifies assumptions about education behind the mainstream North American schooling: that the primary educational goal is to teach subject matter and deliver knowledge and skills, most often divorced from the immediacy of students’ lifeworld, in the service of consumerism driven industrial civilization. Moreover, student behavior defined as unproductive and disruptive in terms of reaching such instrumentalist goal is seen as in need of control and management, which then becomes central concern and operation of schooling. This paper challenges these assumptions and offers a larger educational vision and practice in alignment with world wisdom traditions, namely becoming more fully …

Holistic Ethnography: Embodiment, Emotion, Contemplation, And Dialogue In Ethnographic Fieldwork, Christine S. Davis, Deborah C. Breede Mar 2023

Holistic Ethnography: Embodiment, Emotion, Contemplation, And Dialogue In Ethnographic Fieldwork, Christine S. Davis, Deborah C. Breede

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

This paper theorizes holistic ethnography—an ethnographic method of inquiry that is similar to an embodied meditation practice—a conscious awareness of experience in which the researcher intentionally and variously focuses her attention on physical sensations, emotions, contemplation, and dialogue to contribute to deep sensemaking and critical examination. We illustrate this using an historical ethnographic field project as example. Only when we have immersed ourselves into our research within and beyond can we work toward a more dialogic understanding of the experience we are studying. We discuss how entering the experience through narrative requires us to focus on the embodiment of smell, …

Contemplative Approaches To Reading And Writing: Cultivating Choice, Connectedness, And Wholeheartedness In The Critical Humanities, Dorothe J. Bach, John Alexander Mar 2023

Contemplative Approaches To Reading And Writing: Cultivating Choice, Connectedness, And Wholeheartedness In The Critical Humanities, Dorothe J. Bach, John Alexander

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

This article describes an approach in which two humanities instructors use reading and writing as a means to help students connect to their minds as objects of contemplation, experience alternative ways of being and relating, and consider how they make meaning from experience. To derive conclusions from this approach, they analyze student work and student feedback from a 3000 level elective comparative literature course, “Spiritual Journeys in Young Adult Fiction.” The results show that students cherish the opportunity to inquire into their habitual ways of relating to their academic work and to each other. They find a greater sense of …

Mindfulness & Bodyfulness: A New Paradigm, Christine Caldwell Mar 2023

Mindfulness & Bodyfulness: A New Paradigm, Christine Caldwell

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

The word mindfulness, though it has been used for centuries, may be both poorly defined and poorly used. Though the word connotes mental processes, the construct often includes embodiment practices such as yoga, sensory tracking, conscious breathing, tai chi, and qi gong. This can generate confusion, conflation, muddled research, and an anti-somatic bias. The author proposes the invention of a new term, bodyfulness, in order to centralize the often marginalized voice of the body in therapeutic, empirical, sociocultural, and contemplative practices.

A Pedagogical Heartbeat: The Integration Of Critical And Contemplative Pedagogies For Transformative Education, Juan D. Mah Y Busch Mar 2023

A Pedagogical Heartbeat: The Integration Of Critical And Contemplative Pedagogies For Transformative Education, Juan D. Mah Y Busch

Journal of Contemplative Inquiry

With so many figurative references to the heart, the heart has become an overextended metaphor and threatens to become less meaningful. Widely circulated books on Critical Pedagogies and Contemplative Pedagogies refer to the heart. Though they may share a sense of learning as transformation, each has a very different method, which I identify as dialectical or dialogical. And, each one defines its liberatory transformation in a very different way, one with “third space” and the other in relational and holistic space, which is considered transcendent. This essay describes two forms of heartfelt awareness, first-order heart-based knowledge and the heart’s second-order …

Public Participation In The Vineyard Wind Project, Jude Humphrey Mar 2023

Public Participation In The Vineyard Wind Project, Jude Humphrey

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

This paper analyzes the environmental and social impact of Vineyard Wind, a proposed offshore wind farm, as well as the public response to these impacts. This was done by reading and summarizing the draft and final environmental impact statement and comments made during the public participation process. Lawsuits brought against the company were also included in this analysis. The public participation process was deemed adequate and in some cases more than required by federal agencies, however the comments and lawsuits show that there are still concerns that were not included in the approved alternative. The public response to this project …

Using Probabilistic Context-Free Grammar To Create Password Guessing Models, Isabelle Hjelden Mar 2023

Using Probabilistic Context-Free Grammar To Create Password Guessing Models, Isabelle Hjelden

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

This paper will discuss two versions of probabilistic context-free grammar password-guessing models. The first model focuses on using English semantics to break down passwords and identify patterns. The second model identifies repeating chunks in passwords and uses this information to create possible passwords. Then, we will show the performance of each model on leaked password databases, and finally discuss the observations made on these tests.

Towards A Modelling Process For Simulating Socio-Ecosystems With A Focus On Climate Change Adaptation, Federico Cornacchia, Alberto Gabino Martinez-Hernandez, Marco Bidoia, Carlo Giupponi Mar 2023

Towards A Modelling Process For Simulating Socio-Ecosystems With A Focus On Climate Change Adaptation, Federico Cornacchia, Alberto Gabino Martinez-Hernandez, Marco Bidoia, Carlo Giupponi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

As the impacts of climate change are expected to be increasingly disruptive, a growing share of the economic literature moved to modelling approaches to address the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental issues. Among them, System Dynamics (SD) stands out as a well-established modelling approach to analyse complex social-ecological systems. In order to benefit from such modelling exercises it is necessary to follow a structured process, bearing in mind that models should have as their ultimate ambition that of supporting decision-making processes. Yet, the connection with decision-making is addressed only in the last phases of the modelling process, with emphasis …

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Due to the significant quantities of waste generated by the Sri Lankan rice industry, circular bioeconomy methodologies were applied to examine value-adding entrepreneurial activities for rice industry by-products (RIB). The study was conceived after scouring the existing literature on agricultural waste management and interviewing experts in the field and the rice industry. In the first phase, the suitability of valorizing alternatives for RIB was considered via a multi-criteria decision-making method. Valorization options, such as biochar production, energy purposes, composting, and other activities, were evaluated using an analytical hierarchy process (AHP) based on four criteria, namely environmental, social, technical, and economic …

Understanding The Ethical Decision-Making Processes Of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy Practitioners, Lisa Krystosek Mar 2023

Understanding The Ethical Decision-Making Processes Of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy Practitioners, Lisa Krystosek

Dissertations

Equine-assisted psychotherapy is a unique field in which interdisciplinary teams of practitioners provide mental health services to clients. These teams are comprised of at least two practitioners, one licensed mental health specialist and one certified equine specialist. While ethics and ethical decision-making are significant issues in the mental health industry, there exists a significant gap in the literature pertaining to the ethical decision-making processes of interdisciplinary teams of equine-assisted psychotherapy practitioners. This dissertation aimed to address the gap through the development of an understanding of how teams of equine-assisted psychotherapy practitioners engage in ethical decision making. Further, the researcher sought …

Therapeutic Effects Of Cd133 + Exosomes On Liver Function After Stroke In Type 2 Diabetic Mice, Poornima Venkat, Hua Gao, Elizabeth L. Findeis, Zhili Chen, Alex Zacharek, Julie Landschoot-Ward, Brianna Powell, Mei Lu, Zhongwu Liu, Zhenggang Zhang, Michael Chopp

Neurology Articles

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is known to adversely affect stroke recovery. However, few studies investigate how stroke elicits liver dysfunction, particularly, how stroke in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) exacerbates progression of NAFLD. In this study, we test whether exosomes harvested from human umbilical cord blood (HUCBC) derived CD133 + cells (CD133 + Exo) improves neuro-cognitive outcome as well as reduces liver dysfunction in T2DM female mice.

METHODS: Female, adult non-DM and T2DM mice subjected to stroke presence or absence were considered. T2DM-stroke mice were randomly assigned to receive PBS or Exosome treatment group. CD133 + …

Neurofibromatosis Type 1-Dependent Alterations In Mouse Microglia Function Are Not Cell-Intrinsic, Francesca Logiacco, Laura Cathleen Grzegorzek, Elizabeth C Cordell, Oliver Popp, Philipp Mertins, David H Gutmann, Helmut Kettenmann, Marcus Semtner

2020-Current year OA Pubs

We previously discovered a sex-by-genotype defect in microglia function using a heterozygous germline knockout mouse model of Neurofibromatosis type 1 (Nf1 ± mice), in which only microglia from male Nf1 ± mice exhibited defects in purinergic signaling. Herein, we leveraged an unbiased proteomic approach to demonstrate that male, but not female, heterozygous Nf1 ± microglia exhibit differences in protein expression, which largely reflect pathways involved in cytoskeletal organization. In keeping with these predicted defects in cytoskeletal function, only male Nf1 ± microglia had reduced process arborization and surveillance capacity. To determine whether these microglial defects were cell autonomous or reflected …

Fibrosis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of long-term diabetic complications and contributes to the development of cardiac and renal dysfunction. The aim of this experimental study, performed in a long-term rat model, which resembles type 1 diabetes mellitus, was to investigate the role of soluble Klotho (sKlotho), advanced glycation end products (AGEs)/receptor for AGEs (RAGE), fibrotic Wnt/β-catenin pathway, and pro-fibrotic pathways in kidney and heart. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin. Glycaemia was maintained by insulin administration for 24 weeks. Serum and urine sKlotho, AGEs, soluble RAGE (sRAGE) and biochemical markers were studied. The levels of Klotho, RAGEs, ADAM10, …

Lynch Law In The Land Of Lincoln: African American Intellectuals And Early Twentieth Century Race Riots, John Patrick Pleming

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract: In the early twentieth century, more and more African Americans began to leave the American South in search of better jobs and more equal treatment in the North. These black migrants found a less rigid racial hierarchy and employment in industrial and domestic settings. However, racism in the North was alive and well. As African American communities began to exert their economic and political power, they were often targeted by white mobs who would rampage through black neighborhoods, killing and burning as they went. In response to race riots in Springfield (1908), East St. Louis (1917), and Chicago (1919), …
