Paper, Papermaking & The History Of Libraries, Patrick F. Roughen Jr
Paper, Papermaking & The History Of Libraries, Patrick F. Roughen Jr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This article traces the history of the relationship of papermaking and paper to libraries over time. Paper was first made in China and is traditionally considered one of that nation’s four greatest inventions, along with gun powder, printing, and the compass. Papermaking was often associated with archives in its early development in China, as well as when it was introduced to Japan, where it came to be a part of some Shinto and Buddhist temples, and later governmental agencies. Under Islam, the availability of paper was linked to increased literacy and growth of libraries. In early modern Europe, before the …
Effecting Free Exercise And Equal Protection, Laura Portuondo
Effecting Free Exercise And Equal Protection, Laura Portuondo
Duke Law Journal
There is an emerging discrepancy in free exercise and equal protection law. For decades, the Supreme Court has maintained that a law’s effects on a protected group are usually insufficient to trigger heightened scrutiny under either the Free Exercise or Equal Protection Clause. This longstanding rule has rendered it virtually impossible to challenge facially neutral laws on constitutional race, sex, and religious discrimination grounds, even where such laws inflict substantial harms on protected groups. Recent free exercise decisions, however, have abandoned this traditional barrier to enforcing constitutional equality rights. In doing so, they have subverted the usual rule that a …

Confined to religion, mythology and the field of the supernatural, the performative dimension of ritual practices was neglected. Looking at ritual through the prism of Performance Studies means shifting the gaze to the context, gesture, play and communication rather than focusing on the cognitive dimension of actors and the textual dimension of Aristotelian theater. It is therefore in order to understand this conceptual effervescence that breaks with the cartesian doctrine, opposing the cognitive and the social, on the one hand, and the cognitive and the action, on the other hand, that we have chosen to devote the present article to …

Fixed expression and idioms are part of the translated discourse. They are ready-made constructions that summarize an idea or a concept by using outstanding formulas. Translate these expressions is a big challenge for the translator. Thus, a well done translation does not mean mastering the linguistic skills of both languages, since the text does not contain just linguistic facts. It is also about culture, emotions, connotations, style and the author’s genius. Formulaic language often presents significant issue in translation just as well as finding a fixed expression as equivalent.

The geographical location of the Western Rif Mountains, between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean has allowed the existence of a wealth of flora and fauna. In the western part of this territory extend the forests of Bni Ider and Jbel Habib, which spread over a large and varied geographical area. They constitute an important part of the ecological diversity characterizing the mountains of the western Rif. This natural heritage has always played an important socio-economic and environmental role locally. However, increasing human pressure on these forest resources, in addition to several unfavorable natural factors, have led to the deterioration …

Faculty Research 2023
In mammals, meiotic recombination is initiated by the introduction of DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) into narrow segments of the genome, defined as hotspots, which is carried out by the SPO11/TOPOVIBL complex. A major player in the specification of hotspots is PRDM9, a histone methyltransferase that, following sequence-specific DNA binding, generates trimethylation on lysine 4 (H3K4me3) and lysine 36 (H3K36me3) of histone H3, thus defining the hotspots. PRDM9 activity is key to successful meiosis, since in its absence DSBs are redirected to functional sites and synapsis between homologous chromosomes fails. One protein factor recently implicated in guiding PRDM9 activity at …

Causation And Conception In American Inventorship, Dan L. Burk
Causation And Conception In American Inventorship, Dan L. Burk
Duke Law & Technology Review
Increasing use of machine learning or “artificial intelligence” (AI) software systems in technical innovation has led some to speculate that perhaps machines might be considered inventors under patent law. While U.S. patent doctrine decisively precludes such a bizarre and counterproductive result, the speculation leads to a more fruitful inquiry about the role of causation in the law of inventorship. U.S. law has almost entirely disregarded causation in determining inventorship, with very few exceptions, some of which are surprising. In this essay, I examine those exceptions to inventive causality, the role they play in determining inventorship, and their effect in excluding …

BACKGROUND: Stable flies [Stomoxys calcitrans (L.)] are economically important pests of cattle and other livestock. As an alternative to conventional insecticides, we tested a push–pull management strategy using a coconut oil fatty acid repellent formulation and an attractant-added stable fly trap.
RESULTS: In our field trials we found that weekly applications of a push–pull strategy can reduce stable fly populations on cattle as well as a standard insecticide (permethrin). We also found that the efficacy periods of the push–pull and permethrin treatments following on-animal application were equivalent. Traps with an attractant lure used as the pull component of the …
The Goddess Of Morgantina: Aprhodite Or Demeter?, Martina Ciriesi
The Goddess Of Morgantina: Aprhodite Or Demeter?, Martina Ciriesi
Undergraduate Research Symposium
"The Goddess of Morgantina" is considered one of the most controversial finds in the history of recent archeology in Sicily. The figure formerly known as "Getty Aphrodite," dated around 400 BCE, had been stolen by looters in Sicily, subsequently purchased by the Getty Museum in 1987, and returned to the Italian state only in September 2007. Unfortunately, illicit excavations have increased unresolved questions about the depiction of the goddess. The various hypotheses for identification of the female divinity represented in Morgantina's sculpture have sparked a lively and wide-ranging scientific debate among scholars. The archaeologist and art historian Antonio …

The blockbuster film Gladiator kickstarted a new wave of ancient historical epics. Some of these, following Gladiator’s lead, drew explicit parallels between ancient Rome and contemporary America – notably Centurion (2010) and The Eagle (2011). The Rome-America analogy allowed Gladiator and its progeny to critique American society, and these critiques have received substantial scholarly attention. Given that these films were produced while America was waging controversial wars, it is unsurprising that one of the critiques they chiefly employ – and one of those scholars have most readily seized upon – is that of American imperialism. Gladiator, Centurion, and The Eagle …

Object-Oriented Creative Coding For Digital Art Students, Dale E. Parson
Computer Science and Information Technology Faculty
An introductory course in creative graphical coding for both computer science and digital art majors need not be watered down. The availability of an excellent Java-based framework including an IDE, debugger, and high-level class and function library avoids potentially problematic mathematics and device-control demands by encapsulating them within the library. Students can add or modify a few lines of code and then run them from the IDE without explicit compilation steps or tool changes, immediately seeing the results of initial coding or bug fixes in the form of animated graphical objects. Incremental introduction of object-oriented mechanisms within the course such …

Pen Surface Temperature As A Predictor Of Dailywater Intake And Tympanic Temperature In Steers Finished In Feedlots, Rodrigo A. Arias, Terry L. Mader
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Adequate estimation of water demand in cattle production feed yards is of high importance, especially due to reduced water availability because of changes in rain precipitation patterns and amounts. The pen surface in feed yards receives and reflects solar radiation, affecting along with other factors the microclimate to which cattle are exposed. This study aimed to describe the relationship between the pen surface temperature with the daily water intake and the tympanic temperature of finishing steers. Climate variables, including solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed plus pen surface temperature and soil temperature at 10.2 cm depth were …

Evaluation Of Four Thermal Comfort Indices And Their Relationship With Physiological Variables In Feedlot Cattle, Rodrigo A. Arias, Terry L. Mader
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Climatic data from different years and experiments conducted in Nebraska were used to estimate four comfort thermal indices and to predict the risk of heat stress and its relationship with pen surface temperature (PST). These included the temperature–humidity index (THI), the adjusted THI (THIadj), the heat load index (HLI), and THIPST using pen surface temperature instead of air temperature. Respiration rates (RR), tympanic temperatures (TT), and panting scores (PS) were also collected in each year and from each location. During 2007, mean values of soil temperature, PST, outgoing shortwave radiation, and TT were greater than in 2008 …

Effects Of Wildfire On Amphibian And Aquatic Insect Biodiversity In Riparian Ecosystems In The Santa Monica Mountains, Conor Kramer, Nolan Gentile
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Wildfires in Southern California are increasing in frequency and intensity, causing devastating effects on flora and fauna. Previous studies have shown that wildfires increased the most over chaparral ecosystems. An important element of the Santa Monica mountain (SMM) chaparral is the riparian zone surrounding streams. We examined the impact of wildfires on amphibians and aquatic insects in riparian ecosystem streams in the SMM by determining the biodiversity of different species before and after the 2018 Woolsey Fire. We hypothesized that the streams in burned areas would contain higher biodiversity overall because succession and lack of competition often occur with natural …

Using California Harmful Algae Risk Mapping To Predict Sea Lion Strandings, Florybeth La Valle, Sydney Socquet
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Domoic acid (DA) is a toxin produced by marine diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia (Pn) and bioaccumulates in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus). DA toxicosis can cause neurological issues and death, and the rate at which Z. californianus become stranded due to this condition has been increasing since it was first diagnosed in a marine mammal in 1998. We compared geotemporal data of sea lion strandings with data from the California Harmful Algae Risk Mapping (C-HARM) Model to analyze patterns that may indicate when and where a sea lion stranding due to DA toxicosis will occur. C-HARM geographically visualizes the …

The ability to communicate within species is a trait utilized by every organism. Using cues conspecifically creates a better chance of survival for other members of the species and increases fitness overall. However, using cues heterospecifically also poses a great advantage as animals can eavesdrop on cues released by another species. Previous studies have recorded that eavesdropping is beneficial to prey species, such as squirrels reacting to bird calls and tadpoles reacting to visual and chemical cues to avoid predation. We asked how one local and one exotic species of frog would respond to cues emitted by another local species …

Introduction: Large-area skin traumas, such as thermal burns, are among the most severe health issues that decrease patients’ quality of life and burden healthcare systems. The CDC estimates that there are 1.1 million burns requiring medical attention each year, with more than 20,000 cases involving at least 25% of the body surface, resulting in 4,500 deaths. In addition, about 10,000 people die from burn-related infections. A promising solution to alleviate this problem is using wound dressings based on biopolymers with inherent wound healing properties and biodegradability. One of these biopolymers is chitosan, which is derived from arthropod shells and exhibits …

INTRODUCTION: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous signaling molecule that serves various roles in the vasculature, such as upregulating angiogenesis, vascular smooth muscle relaxation, protecting endothelial function, and regulating redox balance. Despite H2S’s positive impacts on vascular homeostasis, it is important to note that its actions depend on its concentrations. At high concentrations, H2S has been reported to increase oxidative stress damage, such as oxidation of cysteine residues and lipid peroxidation. This may indicate that H2S may act as a ‘double-edged sword’ in the field of vascular physiology. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) …

Visual stories are a popular format for online storytelling in many contexts. Visualizing text often helps a reader understand the story. There are tools that currently exist which can generate multimedia based on user input text. The regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins are crucial for the termination of G protein signals elicited by G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). This superfamily of cell membrane receptors, by far the largest and most versatile in mammals, including humans, play pivotal roles in the regulation of cardiac function and homeostasis. Perturbations in both the activation and termination of their G protein-mediated signaling underlie numerous heart pathologies, including heart failure (HF) and atrial fibrillation (AFib). Therefore, RGS proteins play important roles in the pathophysiology of these two devasting cardiac diseases, and several of them could be targeted therapeutically. Although close …
