The Importance Of Accessible Government Data In Advancing Environmental Justice, Frank D. Lomonte, Daniel Delgado Apr 2023

The Importance Of Accessible Government Data In Advancing Environmental Justice, Frank D. Lomonte, Daniel Delgado

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

Part I of this Article sets forth the history and animating principles of the environmental justice movement in the United States during the 1970s, which developed as an adjunct to the larger civil rights movement. Part II then turns to the role of documents and data in exposing where toxins present a risk to public health and where documentation habitually falls short. It discusses how freedom of information laws can unlock access to the documents and data that quantify environmental hazards but also how those laws fail to produce reliable results because of the influence of regulated industries. Part III …

The Formation Of A Hellenic Identity: The Impact Of Herodotus On The Ancient Greek And The Reception Of His Histories, Conor James Apr 2023

The Formation Of A Hellenic Identity: The Impact Of Herodotus On The Ancient Greek And The Reception Of His Histories, Conor James

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

The ethnic identity of the ancient Greek is a complicated idea that developed over hundreds of years unbeknownst to the communities that would one day be identified as ‘Hellenes.’ The advent of the polis in the Archaic era was followed by nearly three hundred years of rapid development within the scattered communities of ancient Greece before conflict with the Persian Empire necessitated inter-polis cooperation. This phenomenon prompted a movement in which the aspects of life that were once viewed as mere similarities between different societies were clung to and presented as proof of a common ethnic identity that called for …

Influence Of Dissolved Oxygen On The Degradation And Transformation Of Netfose Within A Secondary Wastewater Treatment Bioreactor System, Alexis Eaton Apr 2023

Influence Of Dissolved Oxygen On The Degradation And Transformation Of Netfose Within A Secondary Wastewater Treatment Bioreactor System, Alexis Eaton

Inquiry Journal Spring 2023

With funding from a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), I studied how dissolved oxygen levels influence the degradation and transformation of N-ethyl perfluorooctanesulfonamido ethanol (NEtFOSE) during wastewater treatment. NEtFOSE is a toxic compound used to make protective paper coatings. It has a tendency to degrade and transform into even more harmful perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances such as perfluorooctanesulfonate, also referred to as PFOS, under certain environmental conditions. The goal was to build a semi-permeable membrane bioreactor that could be placed in the secondary treatment basin of Exeter, New Hampshire’s wastewater treatment plant and used to safely evaluate this toxic compound’s …

Obelisks And The Power Of Monument, John Brockelman Apr 2023

Obelisks And The Power Of Monument, John Brockelman

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

Obelisks were massive granite spires erected to honor the Egyptian sun god Ra and to glorify the individual kings who ordered their construction. Obelisks served to syncretize both king and god to reflect the divinely-ordained position kingship held within Egyptian society. By the New Kingdom period, kings used obelisks to adorn their tombs and temples, replacing the much larger and more expensive pyramid tombs of the Old Kingdom. Eventually, Egypt’s power faded, and most obelisks fell into disrepair, all but lost to time. That was until the arrival of Augustus, the first emperor of Rome. With the defeat of his …

Assessing High Dynamic Range Imagery Performance For Object Detection In Maritime Environments, Erasmo Landaeta Apr 2023

Assessing High Dynamic Range Imagery Performance For Object Detection In Maritime Environments, Erasmo Landaeta

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The field of autonomous robotics has benefited from the implementation of convolutional neural networks in vision-based situational awareness. These strategies help identify surface obstacles and nearby vessels. This study proposes the introduction of high dynamic range cameras on autonomous surface vessels because these cameras capture images at different levels of exposure revealing more detail than fixed exposure cameras. To see if this introduction will be beneficial for autonomous vessels this research will create a dataset of labeled high dynamic range images and single exposure images, then train object detection networks with these datasets to compare the performance of these networks. …

Predictability Augmentation By In-Silico Study To In-Vivo And In-Vitro Results Of Lung Doses Of Airborne Fine And Ultrafine Particles Inhaled By Humans At Industrial Workplaces, Mohammed Ali

Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study correlates computational predictions with in vivo and in vitro experimental results of inhaled fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM) transport, dissemination, and deposition in the human respiratory airways. Epidemiological studies suggest that workplace exposure to anthropogenic pollutant PMs is a risk factor for increased susceptibility to acute bronchopulmonary illnesses. However, investigations on detailed human inhalation and PM transport processes are restrictive from time, cost, and ethical perspectives. Computational simulation based on the Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry (MPPD) model was employed to quantify the risks associated with workplace exposure of these PMs. Here, the physical, mechanical, and electrical properties …

Shades Of Justice: Racial Profiling Then And Now, F. Michael Higginbotham Apr 2023

Shades Of Justice: Racial Profiling Then And Now, F. Michael Higginbotham

Articles

It is not easy these days to talk about race in America, especially in a diverse group across racial lines. This is because people tend to feel strongly about these controversial issues, and when they disagree, they end up calling each other bad names, and that upsets their stomachs; then, they cannot enjoy the good food and drink that often accompany such events. So many simply choose not to attend, burying their heads in the sand. This Essay discusses several controversial aspects of the relevance of slavery law to issues of racial inequality today. Racial profiling has been a consistent …

Interdisciplinary Design Senior Theses

Global warming and climate change are prevalent issues in today’s society. As a result, research in the ocean, our world’s biggest ecosystem, is imperative in efforts to protect the environment. Santa Clara University’s Robotic Systems Lab contributes to this field through work and developments on remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). An existing ROV system called Nautilus consists of a robot arm, end effector, and storage system in order to collect various types of sediments at a depth of 300 feet. However, the previous system does not meet that requirement. In direct collaboration with researchers within the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, …

Interactive Effects Of Climate Change‐Induced Range Shifts And Wind Energy Development On Future Economic Conditions Of The Atlantic Surfclam Fishery, Stephanie Stromp, Andrew M. Scheld, John M. Klinck, Daphne M. Munroe, Eric N. Powell, Roger Mann, Sarah Borsetti, Eileen E. Hofmann

Faculty Publications

Rising water temperatures along the northeastern U.S. continental shelf have resulted in an offshore range shift of the Atlantic surfclam Spisula solidissima to waters still occupied by ocean quahogs Arctica islandica. Fishers presently are prohibited from landing both Atlantic surfclams and ocean quahogs in the same catch, thus limiting fishing to locations where the target species can be sorted on deck. Wind energy development on and around the fishing grounds will further restrict the fishery. A spatially explicit model of the Atlantic surfclam fishery (Spatially Explicit Fishery Economics Simulator) has the ability to simulate the consequences of fishery displacement …

Subjective Well-Being Of Teachers In K-12 Christian Schools, Julianne Rettig

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

This non-experimental, quantitative study aimed to examine the factors that influence the self-perceived well-being of teachers in K-12 Christian schools. The sample for this study was convenient, non-probable, and purposive and comprised of 81 teachers from one Christian school system in Florida. The measurement tool used in this study is based on Seligman’s (2011) work on well-being. The Workplace PERMAH Profiler is a valid and reliable (α = .94) instrument that measures flourishing in terms of six domains: positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment, and health. The internal reliability of study participant responses to survey items associated with the construct …

Role Of Nucleus Accumbens Dopamine Receptor Signaling In The Suppression Of Punished Reward Seeking, Grace M. Joyner, Anna Caroline Toburen Apr 2023

Role Of Nucleus Accumbens Dopamine Receptor Signaling In The Suppression Of Punished Reward Seeking, Grace M. Joyner, Anna Caroline Toburen

Senior Theses

Previous studies have shown that within the nucleus accumbens (NAc), a brain region associated with motivation and reinforcement learning, activity of neurons expressing the dopamine D2 receptor (D2R neurons) act as a “break” on risky behavior associated with negative outcomes. Moreover, when these neurons are stimulated, rats were found to become more risk averse. However, the impact of dopamine signaling through NAc D2R neurons in risk avoidance is still unclear. To further explore the role of NAc dopamine signaling in punished reward-seeking, we tested rats in a novel punished food-seeking paradigm in which subjects are trained to choose between a …

Bad Blood: Octavia E. Butler Takes A Bite Out Of Gender And Racial Stereotypes In Fledgling, Abigail Cole Apr 2023

Bad Blood: Octavia E. Butler Takes A Bite Out Of Gender And Racial Stereotypes In Fledgling, Abigail Cole

Senior Theses

For contemporary audiences the word “vampire” typically conjures two figures: a Damon Salvatore-esque[1] man with devil may care eyes, dark hair and an equally dark past. Dripping with sex and charm, he struggles with an internal dilemma, his animalistic urge to kill constantly at war with his human morality. On the other hand, we have the sexy, scantily clad white female vampire who uses her feminine wiles and socially “perfect” body to prey upon poor, unsuspecting men, until she is eventually corralled into domestic submission, or killed. While this description fits the broader scale of what the vampiric figure …

A Comparative Investigation Of Tonal Memory Improvements With Electronic And Vocal Pitch Stimulus Training, Grayson M. Fletcher Apr 2023

A Comparative Investigation Of Tonal Memory Improvements With Electronic And Vocal Pitch Stimulus Training, Grayson M. Fletcher

Senior Theses

The study described herein compares improvements in tonal memory for young adults (age 19- 22), specifically retention of pitches, between two groups (n1=8, n2=8) with nearly identical training programs. One group was provided electronic pitch stimuli for the training program, while the other group was given human vocal stimuli. Self-paced computerized training sessions were conducted in a soundproofed testing room and interposed between pre-test and post-test measurements. A pre-test—post-test randomized experimental design allowed for assessment of whether the training was effective for each group in addition to comparing effectiveness of training between groups. Analyses with demographic factors, particularly previous musical …

That’S My Deity: An Examination Of Online Lokean Cultures Through Log-Linear Modeling, Mary Bernstein Apr 2023

That’S My Deity: An Examination Of Online Lokean Cultures Through Log-Linear Modeling, Mary Bernstein

Senior Theses

A rise in online religious communities and the growth of so-called ‘Old World’ religions are reflected in the internet’s subcultures of Neopaganism, a growing religious movement that has been documented in America since the 1960s. The religions under this umbrella movement vary drastically and include belief systems such as Wicca, Druidry, and deity worship. Belief systems under this movement lack the traditional hierarchy found in structured religion and lack a singular sacred text. As such, believers usually find and support one another not through a physical sacred place of meeting, but through an online community that acts as sacred space. …

Understanding The Implications Of Lineage Plasticity In Breast Cancer Evolution And Chemotherapy Response, Gadisti Aisha Mohamed Apr 2023

Understanding The Implications Of Lineage Plasticity In Breast Cancer Evolution And Chemotherapy Response, Gadisti Aisha Mohamed

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Intra-tumoral heterogeneity and the presence of a phenotypically diverse cell population within a single tumor represents a major hurdle in the understanding of tumor progression and dynamics, and complicates the effective diagnosis and management of this disease. One of the ways by which tumors gain intra-tumoral variation is through the acquisition of phenotypic or lineage plasticity, whereby tumor cells evolve away from the lineage of origin and gain altered profiles. These alterations may impart specific survival benefits to different subpopulations of cells, enabling them to proliferate faster, migrate away from the site of the primary tumor or evade drug-induced elimination, …

Behavioral And Neural Mechanisms Of Serotonin Modulation Of Impulsivity And Reward, Stephanie S. Desrochers Apr 2023

Behavioral And Neural Mechanisms Of Serotonin Modulation Of Impulsivity And Reward, Stephanie S. Desrochers

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Despite its prevalence in many psychiatric disorders, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, suicidal depression, schizophrenia, and aggression and motivational disorders, impulsivity and its biological bases remain poorly understood. Subdivisions of impulsivity, including impulsive action (reduced response inhibition) and impulsive choice (reduced delay of gratification), sometimes present in an uncorrelated manner. This complexity renders pathological impulsivity difficult to treat, as different underlying causes likely result in different phenotypic presentations, despite being placed under one umbrella term. In order to study the behavior and biology of one particular facet of impulsivity, this dissertation utilizes the serotonin 1B receptor (5-HT1BR; an inhibitory …

Cell-Typing And Interaction Analysis Of The Immune Compartment Of The Tumor Microenvironment Using High-Resolution Omics Modalities, Courtney Taylor Schiebout Apr 2023

Cell-Typing And Interaction Analysis Of The Immune Compartment Of The Tumor Microenvironment Using High-Resolution Omics Modalities, Courtney Taylor Schiebout

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) has provided a new frontier for the investigation of complex tissues. One ideal candidate for the utilization of this method is the tumor microenvironment (TME). The TME is often host to a complex set of cell populations and behaviors that can be highly influential for cancer inhibition or progression. This is especially true of the immune compartment of the TME: the presence of certain types of immune cells in the TME and their expression profiles can significantly affect cancer prognosis in some cases. By providing individual cell-level gene expression data, scRNA-seq can be highly informative for characterizing …

The Impressionist Impact: How Claude Debussy Influenced Non-Western Composers And Music, Ragan Love Apr 2023

The Impressionist Impact: How Claude Debussy Influenced Non-Western Composers And Music, Ragan Love

University Honors Theses

Achille-Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was a French composer and a pioneer in Impressionist music and experimented with an original system of harmony which would shape music for the rest of the 20th century. His work would go on to impact the compositional style of two other composers, Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996), a Japanese composer, and Herbie Hancock (1940- ), a jazz performer and composer. Throughout this project you will see the influence that Debussy had on these other composers through a multimedia experience with scores and recordings. Debussy's use of chromaticism and modal melodies are big contributors to the music of Takemitsu …
