Erythropoietin (EPO), a hematopoietic neurotrophin, is a potential therapeutic for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) but has limited blood–brain barrier (BBB) permeability. EPO fused to a chimeric transferrin receptor monoclonal antibody (cTfRMAb) enters the brain via TfR-mediated transcytosis across the BBB. We previously showed that cTfRMAb-EPO is protective in a mouse model of amyloidosis, but its effects on tauopathy are not known. Given that amyloid and tau pathology are characteristics of AD, the effects of cTfRMAb-EPO were studied in a tauopathy mouse model (PS19). Six-month-old PS19 mice were injected intraperitoneally with either saline (PS19-Saline; n = 9) or cTfRMAb-EPO (PS19-cTfRMAb-EPO, 10 mg/kg; …

A Phenomenological Study Of Parents Accessing And Receiving Professional Care For Their Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) During The Covid-19 Outbreak In Washington State, Patrick Michael Barry
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
COVID-19 changes and restrictions have necessitated a change in the way schools, mental health providers, medical providers, and other educational and therapy services provide for children with autism. This study explores, in-depth, the experience of parents of children with ASD as they have navigated the COVID-19 required changes to professional treatment and services for children with ASD and their families. Research suggests that raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be an overwhelming experience for parents and families, and greater family burden is positively associated with the number of unmet professional help service needs. As services were …

The variety of dairy products available on the market have now changed with the advent of alternative plant derived milks. Many believe that these plant based milks may be a healthier and a more sustainable option in contrast to dairy products. The production of both respective types of yogurts requires fermentation which is a process that is carried out by bacteria, hence the presence of live cultures. Fermentation of dairy products is a result of lactose sugars being metabolized by bacteria, probiotics, of which the final metabolic product is lactic acid. Due to the popularity of alternative yogurt, it is …

What are the similarities and differences within locus 4147/AS-2 technological organization? Determining the function of the site may reveal new adaptive strategies used by Paleoindian groups and perhaps tell us more about their social and technological organization. By measuring, identifying, analyzing, and comparing the lithic components of the locus 4147/AS-2, I hope to further our understanding of the Rio Rancho site’s function and technological organization. A study of the spatial distribution of various artifact types within the locus will also help determine the function. Chemical (XRF) and physical analysis of the variety of lithic materials from the sites will also …

Measuring artifacts is a fundamental method of archeological research. Measurements assist scientists in gaining knowledge about past human-animal interactions, the effects of those interactions on ecosystems, environmental changes over time, changes in ecological resources, and more. The caliper is the traditional tool for such work, but it is uncommon for scientists to carry a caliper around in their bag or pocket while in the field. There is a tool, however, that almost every person carries around with them constantly: the smartphone. In this experiment we endeavored to discover if two measuring apps, the “Ruler” app and the “ARuler” app would …
Calcium Ions Effect On Planaria Feeding Behavior, Jonathan Newman, Anden Velez, Cassandra S. Korte
Calcium Ions Effect On Planaria Feeding Behavior, Jonathan Newman, Anden Velez, Cassandra S. Korte
Student Publications and Presentations
Calcium is important for the contraction of muscles, neurotransmission, and signaling in animals. Like other active movers, invertebrate planarian flatworms have musculature for motility. Therefore, it can be inferred that without the proper concentration of calcium ions in the water they can’t undulate or extend the pharynx, a muscular feeding structure. Planaria are generally cultured at a 0.5 g/L concentration of instant ocean sea salt (IOS), which contains calcium ion of 0.126 mM. However, there is uncertainty in the concentrations of important ions, such as calcium, which are optimal for the maintenance and homeostasis of the planaria. Previous research on …

One key factor of archeology research is discovering the faunal bones at excavation sites and seeing what lived many years ago. Faunal remains are bones, hair, shells, and more, any piece of animal anatomy. Discovering the different types of bones at excavations in Florida can give archeologists a sense of the different species in this state that were utilized by humans in the past. This study is creating a visual guide and key for faunal bone artifacts in south Florida. The key will consist of photos of bone artifacts excavated in south Florida of different types of fish and other …
Cell-Specific Role Of Il4rα Signaling In Allergic Asthma, Ishita Choudhary
Cell-Specific Role Of Il4rα Signaling In Allergic Asthma, Ishita Choudhary
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
IL-4 and IL-13 play a critical role in allergic asthma pathogenesis via their common receptor, i.e., interleukin 4 receptor alpha (IL4Rα). However, the cell type-specific role of IL4Rα-mediated signaling in allergic asthma has remained unclear. We hypothesized that the role of IL4Rα signaling in allergic asthma is cell-type specific. To test our hypothesis, we challenged myeloid cell-specific IL4Rα-deficient (LysMcre+/+/IL4Rαfl/fl), myeloid cell-specific IL4Rα-sufficient (LysMcre+/+/IL4Rαwt/wt), airway epithelial cell-specific IL4Rα-deficient (CCSP-Cre+/IL4Rαfl/fl), and airway epithelial cell-specific IL4Rα-sufficient (CCSP-Cre-/IL4Rαfl/fl) mice with either mixed allergens (MA) or normal saline three …

Nous Sommes Tous Des « Djadjas » : La Question De L’Identité Dans La Musique Française Et Francophone Au 21^E Siècle, Molly Earle
Honors Theses

Real-Time Imaging And Measurement Of Compartmentalized Redox Shifts Using Novel Redox-Sensitive Biosensors: Implications In Developmental Toxicology, Brandon Mitchell Davies
Theses and Dissertations
Glutathione (GSH) is a small antioxidant in the body and exists in large quantities compared to other antioxidants. The GSH redox state (Eh) helps developmental processes, however, when the GSH Eh is disrupted, cells may undergo significantly poor developmental pathways, possibly leading to long-lasting damages. Similarly, NADPH and Thioredoxin redox states can have a major impact on cellular function, viability, and response to both endogenous and exogenous toxicants. Subcellular, compartmentalized redox environments during normal or perturbed situations, specifically in the cytosol, mitochondria, and nucleus, are not well understood. Here, using the P19 neurogenesis model of cellular differentiation, the kinetics of …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Epigenetics has been revealed to play a crucial role in the long-term memory in plants. However, little is known about whether the epigenetic modifications occur with age progressively in conifers. Here, we present the single-base resolution DNA methylation landscapes of the 25-gigabase Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis) genome at different ages. The result shows that DNA methylation is closely coupled with the regulation of gene transcription. The age-dependent methylation profile with a linearly increasing trend is the most significant pattern of DMRs between ages. Two segments at the five-prime end of the first ultra-long intron in DAL1, a conservative age biomarker …

Reviving The Roots: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study Of Black Women In Agriculture And The Influence Of Post-Secondary Education, Alvianna Woodard-Davis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions and lived experiences of twenty Black women in the southern United States and the influence of post-secondary education on agricultural science. Two theories guided this study, Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Crenshaw’s intersectionality theory. When considering the five levels of Maslow's hierarchy, coupled with Black women's marginality as identified by the intersectionality theory, the research helped better define the relationship between Black women in agriculture and the referenced theories. Criterion sampling was used to identify ten experienced Black female producers and ten agriculture students to determine the trend. …

The effects of anthropogenic noise continue to threaten marine fauna, yet the impacts of human-produced sound on the broad aspects of cognition in marine mammals remain relatively understudied. The shutdown of non-essential activities due to the COVID-19-related anthropause created an opportunity to determine if reducing levels of oceanic anthropogenic noise on cetaceans affected processes of sensitization and habituation for common human-made sounds in an experimental setting. Dolphins at Dolphin Quest Bermuda were presented with three noises related to human activities (cruise ship, personal watercraft, and Navy low-frequency active sonar) both in 2018 and again during the anthropause in 2021 via …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
Purkinje cell (PC) loss occurs at an early age in patients and animal models of Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC), a lysosomal storage disease caused by mutations in the Npc1 or Npc2 genes. Although degeneration of PCs occurs early in NPC, little is known about how NPC1 deficiency affects the postnatal development of PCs. Using the Npc1nmf164 mouse model, we found that NPC1 deficiency significantly affected the postnatal development of PC dendrites and synapses. The developing dendrites of Npc1nmf164 PCs were significantly deficient in mitochondria and lysosomes. Furthermore, anabolic (mTORC1) and catabolic (TFEB) signaling pathways were not only perturbed …

The Power Of Citizen Science: Overcoming The Knowledge Gap Of The Marine Mammal Diversity In The Bay Islands Of Honduras, Gloria Joo Ryung Oh
Honors Theses
Preservation of regional biological diversity requires an understanding of the inhabiting species. However, species surveys are often difficult due to a a lack of resources. This study utilized citizen science, which involves the use of non-scientists for data collection, to summarize the marine mammal sightings in the Bay Islands of Honduras (BIH). After data filtration, thirteen species of marine mammals were identified in the 509 observations records, of which 92% originated from citizen science sources. These included four species that did not have a previous record in the BIH, two of which were first reports for the country of Honduras: …

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability and is experienced by nearly 3 million people annually as a result of falls, vehicular accidents, or from being struck by or against an object. While TBIs can range in severity, the majority of injuries are considered to be mild. However, TBI of any severity has the potential to have long-lasting neurological effects, including headaches, cognitive/memory impairments, mood dysfunction, and fatigue as a result of neural damage and neuroinflammation. Here, we modified a projectile concussive impact (PCI) model of TBI to deliver a closed-head impact with variable severity …
