Savages And Sable Subjects: White Fear, Racism, And The Demonization Of Creole Voodoo In New Orleans In The 19th Century, Christopher L. Newman
Savages And Sable Subjects: White Fear, Racism, And The Demonization Of Creole Voodoo In New Orleans In The 19th Century, Christopher L. Newman
Madison Historical Review
Prior to the Haitian Revolution, the religion of Voodoo maintained a safe and uninterrupted presence in New Orleans. Practiced by free and enslaved Blacks, Voodoo thrived within the larger Creole culture of the Louisiana territory. However, after the rebellion, white slaveholders in New Orleans would come to regard Voodoo as an evil, savage superstition related to Haitian Vodou. The demonizing of New Orleans Voodoo would emerge from white slaveholders’ fears of slave uprisings inspired by the Haitian Revolution and a migration of Haitian rebels into New Orleans. Yet theological objections were not the primary impetus for white aggressions toward Creole …

Demons In The City Of Angeles: Gay Neo-Nazis In Southern California, Emma Bianco
Madison Historical Review
This article explores the perplexing history of self-proclaimed “Aryan homophiles:” the National Socialist League of Los Angeles. A neo-Nazi group made up of exclusively gay men, this organization’s reign from the 1970s to mid-1980s offers an atypical perspective into Southern California’s racial and political settings. Garnered from the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives, this story showcases how far from utilizing a “paranoid style,” the NSL’s brand of hate did not stray too far from that already clearly established in the mainstream environment. The NSL forces us to challenge our preconceptions about what makes up the “typical” racial extremist.

Topological Data Analysis Of Weight Spaces In Convolutional Neural Networks, Adam Wagenknecht
Topological Data Analysis Of Weight Spaces In Convolutional Neural Networks, Adam Wagenknecht
Dissertations
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have become one of the most commonly used tools for performing image classification. Unfortunately, as with most machine learning algorithms, CNNs suffer from a lack of interpretability. CNNs are trained by using a training data set and a loss function to tune a set of parameters known as the layer weights. This tuning process is based on the classical method of gradient descent, but it relies on a strong stochastic component, which makes the weight behavior during training difficult to understand. However, since CNNs are governed largely by the weights that make up each of the …

Cancer is the leading cause of mortality globally. With anticancer medications causing severe adverse effects, understanding the role of alternative and efficacious anticancer treatments with minimal or no side effects can be beneficial. Edible mushrooms have been associated with certain health benefits and exhibit a broad range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating activities. The anticancer potential of different mushrooms is now being tested. The goal of this scoping review was to discuss the most recent and available evidence on the therapeutic uses of medicinal mushrooms in cancer treatment, specifically those cancers with some of the highest mortality rates …

Facing Famine: Justice And The Case Of Unilateral Intervention, Tanner R. Brooks
Facing Famine: Justice And The Case Of Unilateral Intervention, Tanner R. Brooks
Honors Theses
Through the course of this year, 900 thousand people will have to struggle through conditions of famine, and a total of 345.2 million will experience food insecurity of some kind. These concerning figures represent an over twofold increase since 2020.1 This presents a serious problem, as access to food is so plainly vital to every aspect of an individual’s existence. It should therefore be uncontroversial to assert the grave nature of the occurrence of famine and other food emergencies faced by so many today. Food emergencies are not merely a result of insufficient food, but rather the institutional policies enacted …
Neurodegeneration And Neuroinflammation In The Olfactory Bulb Of Zebrafish Following Acute Hypoxia, Skylar Dewitt, Evan Thomas
Neurodegeneration And Neuroinflammation In The Olfactory Bulb Of Zebrafish Following Acute Hypoxia, Skylar Dewitt, Evan Thomas
22nd Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2023)
Hypoxia, the lack of sufficient oxygen in tissues to sustain bodily functions, has a deleterious effect on physiological and behavioral health. Unlike mammalian brains, which are restrained in their capacity to recover following damage and hypoxic injury, zebrafish are an excellent model to study exposure to hypoxia due to substantial neuroplasticity mechanisms within their brain. Specifically, the olfactory bulbs (OBs) display high neuroplasticity and neurogenesis (i.e., generation of new neurons), making it a useful model to study neural responses under stressed environmental conditions such as hypoxia. Here, we establish a new paradigm of hypoxic exposure in zebrafish to uncover the …

Dopaminergic Synapse Loss In 6-Ohda Lesioned Zebrafish, Grace Stalions, Heather Van Dort, Gabriella Taylor
22nd Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2023)
Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons, and an early symptom of Parkinson's disease is olfactory dysfunction. A common animal model used in Parkinson's disease research is zebrafish because of their unique neuro-regenerative ability, which is particularly in their olfactory bulb. In order to create a model of the early stages of Parkinson's disease we injected zebrafish with the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) to induce the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the olfactory bulb. Olfactory system recovery post 6-OHDA injection has been recorded in previous literature, but the state of synaptic dopaminergic synapses post-injection has not …

Effect Of Delaying Hca Exposure On The Development Of Manic/Depressive Behaviors In Sprague Dawley Rats, Eden Comer, Rachel Mast, Natalie Olander, Mackenzie Williams
22nd Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2023)
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a neuropsychological disorder that is characterized by cyclical periods of depressive and manic behaviors. The Chase lab is focused on developing a reliable animal model for BD in order to characterize the critical neurophysiological and neurochemical changes that trigger BD. Previous studies in the lab have shown that daily injection of rat pups from postnatal day 3 through 19 (P3-P19) with homocysteic acid (HCA) leads to the development of a mixed manic and depressive state after puberty. These behaviors can be reversed by treatment with lithium and involve changes in gene expression in the prefrontal cortex …
Designing Resilient Agents Using Grammatical Evolution, Behavior Trees, And Finite Linear Temporal Logic, Aadesh Neupane
Designing Resilient Agents Using Grammatical Evolution, Behavior Trees, And Finite Linear Temporal Logic, Aadesh Neupane
Theses and Dissertations
Resilience is essential for long-term autonomous agents. Swarm behaviors seen in bees, ants, birds, fish, and others are interesting because they resiliently perform complex coordinated tasks like foraging, nest-selection, flocking and escaping predators without centralized control or coordination. Conventionally, mimicking swarm behaviors with robots requires researchers to study actual behaviors, derive mathematical models, and implement these models as state machines. Since the conventional approach is time-consuming and cumbersome, this dissertation uses a grammatical evolution algorithm with Behavior Trees (BTs) to evolve behaviors that are resilient to different perturbations for foraging and nest maintenance tasks. The modular, reactive, and readable properties …

In a world filled with heavy overwhelmingness, the creatures I sculpt help root myself and the viewer in a lighter, gentler place. The creatures have diverse body shapes and sizes, colors, and an exploration of pattern and texture with a focus on tactility. I want viewers to feel compelled to touch or engage personally with my sculptures, and for the creatures to live through the viewers by interacting with them or their environment. This brings moments of curiosity, self-acceptance, or compassion. Though we are often overburdened with negative thoughts, our inner critics speaking louder than anyone in the room, my …

The Essence Of Introspection, Skyler Pointer
B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)
In my youth, I grew up watching cartoons and I mean a lot of them. Animation has always been very important to me as I am fascinated by how we give characters movement and how it gives them a personality. Some people might look at these characters and see more than what others see in the sense that a viewer could assume how these characters are supposed to act based on how they walk or how their arms move. The storytelling that we can do with these characters gives us almost unlimited possibilities with where we can go within this …

Here, we describe the continued synthetic molecular evolution of a lineage of host-compatible antimicrobial peptides (AMP) intended for the treatment of wounds infected with drug-resistant, biofilm-forming bacteria. The peptides tested are variants of an evolved AMP called d-amino acid CONsensus with Glycine Absent (d-CONGA), which has excellent antimicrobial activities in vitro and in vivo. In this newest generation of rational d-CONGA variants, we tested multiple sequence-structure-function hypotheses that had not been tested in previous generations. Many of the peptide variants have lower antibacterial activity against Gram-positive or Gram-negative pathogens, especially variants that have altered hydrophobicity, secondary structure potential, or spatial …
Trait Sadism In Bdsm Practitioners And Non-Practitioners, Marley Russell
Trait Sadism In Bdsm Practitioners And Non-Practitioners, Marley Russell
Psychology ETDs
Sadism is an elusive construct within psychology. Multiple types are studied without clear psychometric or theoretical distinctions, and operationalizations of these respective sub-constructs lack validity. This study explores the empirical distinction between two sadism types: consensual sexual sadism (i.e. in the context of BDSM) and trait sadism. Trait sadism is widely synonymized with “everyday sadism”, but here conceptualized as a higher-order construct encompassing both everyday and a novel “prosocial sadism”. I develop and pilot the BDSM Identities and Behaviors (BIB) checklist in a sample of BDSM practitioners. I then compare those practitioners to non-practitioners on trait sadism and dark triad …

Mechanisms Of Chromosomal Instability (Cin) Tolerance In Aggressive Tumors: Surviving The Genomic Chaos, Brittiny Dhital, Veronica Rodriguez-Bravo
Mechanisms Of Chromosomal Instability (Cin) Tolerance In Aggressive Tumors: Surviving The Genomic Chaos, Brittiny Dhital, Veronica Rodriguez-Bravo
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Chromosomal instability (CIN) is a pervasive feature of human cancers involved in tumor initiation and progression and which is found elevated in metastatic stages. CIN can provide survival and adaptation advantages to human cancers. However, too much of a good thing may come at a high cost for tumor cells as excessive degree of CIN-induced chromosomal aberrations can be detrimental for cancer cell survival and proliferation. Thus, aggressive tumors adapt to cope with ongoing CIN and most likely develop unique susceptibilities that can be their Achilles' heel. Determining the differences between the tumor-promoting and tumor-suppressing effects of CIN at the …
Fusarium Species Structure In Nebraska Corn, Yuchu Ma
Fusarium Species Structure In Nebraska Corn, Yuchu Ma
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Fusarium species are known to infect corn and cause significant yield losses and mycotoxin contamination worldwide. In this study, we investigated the diversity of Fusarium species infecting corn in Nebraska and their potential to produce fumonisins and trichothecenes. A total of 259 Fusarium isolates were collected from different corn tissues (ear, stalk, and root), revealing a significant association between the various Fusarium species complexes and different plant parts (p < 0.05). Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti species complex (FIESC) was the most widespread and abundant, followed by the Fusarium sambucinum (FSAMSC) and Fusarium fujikuroi species complexes (FFSC). In the subsequent analysis, we investigated the mycotoxin …

Effects Of Benzyl Isothiocyanate And Papain On Parascaris Spp. Larval Embryonation, Moriah Wood
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
Ascarids (Parascaris equorum and Parascaris univalens) are a common type of intestinal parasite found in foals. By the age of one year, most horses have built a natural immunity to Parascaris spp. However, Parascaris spp. are known to be the most pathogenic type of parasite in foals and can cause poor growth, weight loss, colic, and even death. Unfortunately, Parascaris spp. have developed resistance to most anthelmintic drugs. Prior studies have found promising results for the use of ground papaya seeds as a short-term anthelmintic. Further research has shown similar results when determining the effectiveness of compounds found in papayas, …
Defeating The Economic Theory Of Copyright: How The Natural Right To Seek Knowledge Is The Only Theory Able To Explain The Entirety Of Copyright’S Balance, Michelle M. Wu
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The practice of copyright was once a perfect balance, reflecting the intent of the Founders to create an environment where new works were constantly made available to the public for consumption and use. The author would create a work, a user would buy a copy and be free to use it. Neither party had any right to interfere with the other’s activities. All of that changed with newer technologies, exposing the flaws both in our laws and the applications of them.
Copyright laws, on their face, prohibit many normal uses of copyrighted works by end users, such as making mixed …
Assessing The Nutritional Value Of Dubia Roaches (Blaptica Dubia) As A Feeder Insect In Reptiles, Elise Barras
Assessing The Nutritional Value Of Dubia Roaches (Blaptica Dubia) As A Feeder Insect In Reptiles, Elise Barras
LSU Master's Theses
Dubia roaches (Blaptica dubia) have emerged on the market as a high protein and low-fat alternative to other feeder insects for captive reptiles. However, much like other insects, dubia roaches naturally have an inverse calcium to phosphorus (Ca:P) ratio. Offering insects to reptiles that are deficient in calcium can lead to nutritional disease (e.g., nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism). For dubia roaches to be a valuable feeder insect, their Ca:P ratio must be corrected. Several studies have assessed their nutritional composition, but no studies have manipulated the calcium content of these insects. Using a high calcium (8.3% calcium, dry matter) …

Influence Of Metabolic Interventions On Animal Aging And Lifespan, Bhaswati Ghosh
Influence Of Metabolic Interventions On Animal Aging And Lifespan, Bhaswati Ghosh
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Aging is associated with metabolic rewiring. Most lifespan-extending longevity interventions target metabolic pathways. Genetic or pharmacological metabolic approaches that mediate longer lifespan and healthspan, are often linked to detrimental effects on human health. Here, I show that supplementation of botanical extracts from Artemisia scoparia (SCO), dramatically increases animal lifespan. Mechanistically, this lifespan extension is dependent on AMPK-DAF-16 signaling via inhibition of the insulin pathway. In SCO-fed worms, longer lifespan was accompanied by higher fat storage and improved resiliency to age-related physiological stress. Notably, DAF-16, the master regulator of longevity, activated the fatty acid desaturation processes, which promoted the accumulation of …
Monsters Can Do More: Teaching With Monster Studies, Colleen Karn
Monsters Can Do More: Teaching With Monster Studies, Colleen Karn
Theses and Dissertations
Monster texts have been studied through a variety of lenses—postcolonial, feminist, etc.—but I argue the most effective way to study monster texts is through a monster studies lens. This lens, which includes both monster culture and monster theory, allows for a more robust understanding of the text, notably how and why cultures and cultural texts produce and employ monsters and how those monsters and monster texts affect the cultures who consume them. Using a monster studies approach to monster texts enables monsters to do more, especially when teaching. Teaching with monster studies can foster, in students, empathy and even advocacy …
