Content, Pattern And Esterification Of Fatty Acids In Fresh Grass In Relation To Extraction Solvents And Sample Storage Conditions, Marta Lourenço, Veerle Fievez
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The relatively high content of linolenic acid (C18:3 n-3) in forages has lead to research on the role of forage based feeding strategies in the production of healthier milk. In these studies, forage samples are often stored, although analysis immediately after harvest has been considered to avoid oxidative deterioration and transformation of unsaturated fatty acids (FA) (Christie, 1993; Frankel, 1998). In the current study, we evaluated the effect of different storage conditions (fresh grass samples under liquid nitrogen (liq.N2) or in a cool box during 3h or at -20ºC, -80ºC or in the extraction solvent at -20°C, during …

Metabolic Characterization Of Porcine Hepatocytes, Kip Cullinan, Sophie Swart, Zachary Varpness, Ryan Schulze
Celebration of Research
In order to be approved for human trials, new drugs need to be tested on mammalian liver cells to determine toxicity. Currently, mouse and rat models are used with limited results because of their vastly different metabolisms. Model systems that utilize primate livers cells are going out of favor because of ethical issues. Cytotheryx Inc. is developing a porcine model system for use in drug trials that are metabolically similar to humans without the ethical concerns. In our research, we developed techniques to characterize porcine liver cell metabolism.1

Does Insulin Resistance (Ir) Have An Impact On The Reproductive And Fertility Potential In Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (Pcos) Women? : Review Article, Muhjah Falah Hassan, Mufedah Ali Jawad, Rabab Zahir Al-Yasiry
Maaen Journal for Medical Sciences
Backgrounds: Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common endocrine and reproductive disorder in the reproductive-age women. Among the pathological changes that are responsible for the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hyperinsulinemia due to increased insulin resistance (IR) is common and usually associated with a higher rate of ovulatory dysfunction and sub-fertility. In addition, those women have poor quality oocytes with low fertilization capability and poor quality embryos. So, insulin has a role in the reproductive function and fertility potential of reproductive age women. Conclusion: Females with PCOS usually exhibit an extreme difficulty in achieving either a successful spontaneous or …

The Sound Of The Civil War: Examining The Intersection Between Music And Emotion In America, 1861-1865, Christina Cannon
The Sound Of The Civil War: Examining The Intersection Between Music And Emotion In America, 1861-1865, Christina Cannon
Campus Research Month
The topics of the history of music and the history of music intersect in the Civil War in fascinating ways. Both religious music and “secular” music were seen to have great power over their listeners, potentially with the power to alter the directions of lives or their salvation status. Music was used both as a mode of rebellion against the antagonizing army and ideal and a rebellion against unnecessarily violent acts. Each side used it against the other, but a select few also used it against the war itself. Soldiers marched to music, set camp to music, and fought to …

Finishing Effect On Fatty Acid Profile Of Intramuscular Fat In Extensively Reared Steers, N. Aldai, B. E. Murray, A. I. Nájera, K. Osoro
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Both the amount and the composition of fat depots in beef may be influenced by several factors i.e. feeding system. Related to this factor, extensively reared cattle may produce beef with a more desirable fatty acid (FA) composition in terms of beneficial effect on human health, especially in relation to the content of n-3 type FAs. However, concentrate finishing improves some carcass traits and meat quality. In this sense, the objective of this work was to study the effect of concentrate finishing on intramuscular (IM) FA profile of Longissimus thoracis (LT) muscle in pasture fed steers.

Effect Of Perennial Ryegrass Cultivars On The Fatty Acid Composition In Milk Of Stall-Fed Cows, Anjo Elgersma, H. J. Smit, G. Ellen, S. Tamminga
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Herbage provides bulk feed for ruminants and plant lipids, especially C18:3, are a major source of benefical fatty acids (FA) in milk. There are very few direct comparisons allowing a precise evaluation of the effects of the basal forage diet on milk FA composition. Grass quality differences can affect rumen metabolism and there could be opportunities to change the composition of ruminant products through choice of grass cultivar. To test this hypothesis, six cultivars were fed to dairy cows in a stall-feeding trial with fresh grass to evaluate the effect of grass cultivar on rumen VFA and milk FA composition …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The international sheep market is supplied mainly from New Zealand and Australia, where there are advanced production systems and marketing organisations, and where the product is exported mainly in the form of carcasses and cuts. In Brazil, the farmers should aim to produce a younger animal, with an adequate fat level at an optimum stage of muscle development, in order to gain market share The proportions of muscle, bone and fat largely determine the value of the carcass, and the breed and age of animal, in addition to other factors such as feeding systems, cause variation in the proportions (Purchas …

The Effect Of Post-Weaning Management On The Physico-Chemical And Textural Quality Of Beef From Bulls And Steers, M. Oliván, P. García, M. J. Martínez, M. Mocha, A. Martínez, P. Castro, K. Osoro
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
There is an increasing interest for extensification in Europe due to environmental and animal welfare concerns. Furthermore, forage-fed beef may present benefits for human health. However, animals fed at pasture produce in some cases darker and tougher meat. It has been shown that castration or a grain-finishing period before slaughter could improve some sensory traits of beef from pasture. The objective of this work was to study the impact of castration and four feeding systems (grazing, grazing + 70 days concentrate, grazing + 100 days concentrate, 200 days concentrate) on the quality of beef from yearling bulls and steers.

Supplementary concentrate level may affect carcass composition in steers. Feeder wagons facilitate feeding and management. The objectives were to determine the effects of (1) supplementary concentrate level with grass silage, and (2) separate or mixed feeding of silage and concentrates, on ribs joint composition.
Lipid Oxidation And Sensory Characteristics Of Grass-Fed Beef: Effect Of Duration Of Grazing Prior To Slaughter, A. P. Moloney, F. Noci, F. J. Monahan, G. E. Nute, R. I. Richardson
Lipid Oxidation And Sensory Characteristics Of Grass-Fed Beef: Effect Of Duration Of Grazing Prior To Slaughter, A. P. Moloney, F. Noci, F. J. Monahan, G. E. Nute, R. I. Richardson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Beef from cattle produced from grass has a higher concentration of fatty acids considered to be beneficial to human health than beef produced from more intensive production systems and this increase in fatty acid concentration is dependant on the duration at pasture prior to slaughter (Noci et al., 2003). Improvements in the fatty acid composition of beef must not impair other quality characteristics of beef. Little information is available on the pattern of change of quality characteristics in grazing animals. The objective of this study was to determine the shelf-life and eating quality of beef from cattle produced from …

The term "functional foods" is often used as a generic description for the beneficial effects of ingested foods that go beyond their traditional nutritive value (Bauman et al., 2001). Milk and dairy products are important dietary sources of nutrients, providing energy, high quality protein, and a variety of vitamins and minerals. Recent research has focused on altering the fat and protein content of milk and other dairy products in order to improve their nutrient content to more aptly reflect current dietary recommendations and trends. As a result, additional focus is being given to designing foods that have beneficial effects …

The COVID-19 pandemic posed a serious threat to life on the entire planet, necessitating the imposition of a lockdown mechanism that restricted people’s movements to stop the disease’s spread. This period experienced a decline in air pollution emissions and some environmental changes, offering a rare opportunity to understand the effects of fewer human activities on the earth’s temperature. Hence, this study compares the changes in Land Surface Temperature (LST) that were observed prior to the pandemic (March & April 2019) and during the pandemic lockdown (March & April 2020) of three parishes in Louisiana. The data for this study was …

Advances in the number and type of available biomaterials have improved medical devices such as catheters, stents, pacemakers, prosthetic joints, and orthopedic devices. The introduction of a foreign material into the body comes with a risk of microbial colonization and subsequent infection. Infections of surgically implanted devices often lead to device failure, which leads to increased patient morbidity and mortality. The overuse and improper use of antimicrobials has led to an alarming rise and spread of drug-resistant infections. To overcome the problem of drug-resistant infections, novel antimicrobial biomaterials are increasingly being researched and developed. Hydrogels are a class of 3D …

The Effectiveness Of Visualization Techniques For Supporting Decision-Making, Cansu Yalim, Holly A. H. Handley
Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
Although visualization is beneficial for evaluating and communicating data, the efficiency of various visualization approaches for different data types is not always evident. This research aims to address this issue by investigating the usefulness of several visualization techniques for various data kinds, including continuous, categorical, and time-series data. The qualitative appraisal of each technique's strengths, weaknesses, and interpretation of the dataset is investigated. The research questions include: which visualization approaches perform best for different data types, and what factors impact their usefulness? The absence of clear directions for both researchers and practitioners on how to identify the most effective visualization …

Modeling, Simulation and Visualization Student Capstone Conference
Practical work guides for complex procedures are significant and highly affect the efficiency and accuracy of on-site users. This paper presents a technique to generate virtual work guides automatically for complex procedures. Firstly, the procedure information is extracted from the electronic manual in PDF format. And then, the extracted procedure steps are mapped to the virtual model parts in preparation for animation between adjacent steps. Next, smooth animations of the procedure are generated based on a 3D natural cubic spline curve to improve the spatial ability of the work guide. In addition, each step's annotation is automatically adjusted to improve …

In the digital age, cybersecurity plays a principal role in resolving consumer concerns regarding data breaches. Nevertheless, United States copyright laws prohibit the effective use of cybersecurity tools that disrupt malicious hackers from gaining access to personal (and sensitive) information. One law, in specific, that is detrimental to the defense against malicious attackers is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”). Specifically, section 1201 of the DMCA prohibits the circumvention of copyrighted information. Malicious hackers have various tools and techniques to obtain unauthorized access to personal information via software vulnerabilities. Importantly, these vulnerabilities often result in the theft of consumers’ personal …
Assessing The Involvement Of Projections From The Prelimbic Prefrontal Cortex To The Paraventricular Nucleus Of The Thalamus In Cocaine Withdrawal-Induced Anxiety, Clinton Coelho
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Withdrawal from cocaine induces an immediate and powerful negative affective state which is characterized by feelings of agitation and anxiety in humans and anxiety-like behaviors in rodents. It has been hypothesized that the anxiogenic effects associated with cocaine withdrawal play a major role in continued cocaine use and drive relapse to cocaine seeking. The prelimbic (PL) medial prefrontal cortex is not only involved in the processing and regulation of negative emotions such as anxiety but also mediates relapse to cocaine-seeking. Subcortical hubs of the reward system that receive projections from the PL neurons are known to be dysregulated during different …
