Elementary & Special Education: Faculty Publications
To engage elementary learners in the complex task of STEM sensemaking, teachers must entice and inspire learners to ask questions, explore, and communicate their findings. This article shares a 5E/3D lesson designed and taught in our elementary science methods courses to model how preservice teachers can integrate literacy and mathematics into a science investigation for STEM sensemaking. We modified a traditional lesson on bird beak adaptations to have a differentiated, interdisciplinary writing component justified by data. We discuss why data-supported literacy is a non-negotiable in science education reforms and how teachers can differentiate tasks to make scientific writing more approachable …

Background
Humanized APOE targeted-replacement (TR) mice are essential tools for studying apoE isoform effects in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other apoE-related disorders. Despite their widespread use, existing APOE mouse models, generated with different gene targeting strategies, have not been directly compared in terms of apoE isoform expression, lipid profiles, and transcriptomic signatures. Such differences could impact how we interpret APOE genotype-related outcomes, as well as related underlying molecular mechanisms.
Methods
We conducted a comprehensive molecular comparison of humanized APOE mouse models from three sources: Taconic Biosciences (TAC), the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (CAF), and The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). We assessed apoE …

Glioblastoma (GBM) remains a lethal tumor, largely due to robust mechanisms that prevent effective induction of cell death. Ferroptosis, a form of iron-dependent cell death, is a promising vulnerability in GBM. Here, we demonstrate that lipocalin-2 (LCN2) suppresses ferroptosis in GBM cells via the receptor tyrosine kinase AXL. LCN2 was elevated in GBM cells compared to lower-grade tumor and non-transformed cells, and Lcn2 knockdown impaired GBM cell fitness and growth in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, Lcn2 knockdown triggered ferroptosis, which was specifically rescued with ferroptosis inhibitors but not apoptosis or necroptosis inhibitors. Lcn2 knockdown reduced AXL phosphorylation, which was …

Scaling Sustainable Propellants To Address Rocket Emissions: Lessons From The U.S. Aviation Industry, Zhizhou (Josie) Liu
Duke Law & Technology Review
The rapid growth of the U.S. commercial space industry has exposed a profound regulatory gap in addressing rocket emissions. By releasing greenhouse gases and particulates like black carbon, alumina, and water vapor, rocket launches not only contribute to climate change but also accelerate stratospheric ozone depletion. The U.S. aviation industry encountered similar environmental challenges decades ago, which eventually prompted legal and policy frameworks to curtail aviation emission through sustainable fuel technologies. Unlike aviation, however, the space industry now operates in a legal vacuum, with no binding international environmental standards or domestic regulations targeting rocket atmospheric pollution. As rocket emissions penetrate …

Small cell carcinoma is a highly lethal cancer variant often found with neuroendocrine (NE) features, as exemplified by small cell lung cancer and small cell NE prostate cancer (SCPC). A genome-wide CRISPR dependency screen using SCPC models generated through human prostate cell transformation identifies a requirement for the transcription factor E2F3. E2F3 dependency is linked to RB inactivation, a near universal occurrence across small cell cancers. The requirement for E2F3 is shared by RB-deficient cells originating from the prostate, lung, and adnexa. In RB-deficient cancer cells, E2F3 inhibition restrains cell cycle progression, proliferation, and tumor growth in vivo. Inhibition of …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Radish is a widely cultivated vegetable with known medicinal value and produces siliques that differ significantly in number and size. The present study compares normal Duanye-13 radish (CK-type) siliques with mutant radish siliques induced by chemical mutagenesis at the young (YS), short (SS), and long (LS) silique stages. Differences in long noncoding ribonucleic acid (lncRNA) expression were investigated using high-throughput RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analyses, revealing 45 324 new lncRNAs in radish siliques. lncRNA expression was higher in YS and LS mutant lines than in CK-type lines, and expression in SS mutants tended to be lower than in CK-type lines. …

Resistance to HIF-2α inhibitors such as Belzutifan underscores the need to better understand how HIF-2α is transcriptionally regulated in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Here, we uncover a cytokine-driven enhancer mechanism that sustains HIF-2α expression through the JAK1-STAT3 signaling pathway. Using a genome-wide CRISPR screen in VHL-deficient ccRCC cells, we identified SOCS3 as a key negative regulator of HIF-2α. Mechanistically, loss of SOCS3 activates JAK1-STAT3 signaling, leading to the recruitment of STAT3 to distal enhancers upstream of EPAS1 that physically loop to its promoter to drive HIF-2α transcription. This cytokine-enhancer circuit was recapitulated in ccRCC patient samples and functionally …

Human norovirus (HuNoV) is a significant cause of gastroenteritis worldwide, affecting people of all age groups. There are currently no vaccines or drugs available, leaving susceptible populations vulnerable to severe or protracted illness. A HuNoV cultivation system is pivotal for screening norovirus antivirals. While the human intestinal enteroid cultivation system allows robust replication of multiple HuNoV strains, it presents technical and cost barriers. Tulane virus (TV), a surrogate for HuNoV, replicates well in monkey kidney cell lines and is closely related to norovirus in cellular biology. Here, we determined the structures of TV protease (TV-Pro) alone and in complex with …

Basement membranes (BMs) are specialized extracellular matrices (ECMs) essential for tissue structure and function. In non-vertebrates, ECM components can be produced both locally and by distant tissues. In contrast, mammalian ECM has traditionally been considered to originate predominantly from adjacent or tissue-resident cells. The kidney glomerular basement membrane (GBM), composed of laminin-α5β2γ1 and collagen-α3α4α5(IV), is produced by neighboring cells and functions as a filtration barrier. Alport syndrome, a genetic kidney disease, is characterized by GBM structural defects and ectopic laminin-α2 deposition, but the source of this laminin remains unknown. Here, using CRISPR-Cas9 transgenic models, we demonstrated that ectopic laminin-α2 in …

In the Philippines, plastic waste persists as a significant issue caused by the widespread use of single-use plastics and the lack of recycling systems. The lack of proper systems made waste segregation and identification inefficient and disorganized. Past studies explain the use of VIS/NIR in plastic segregation and the potential of spectral frequencies. However, there is limited investigation into the consistency of the AS7265x sensor to address reliability in real-world conditions, where contaminants, variable lighting, and material degradation significantly impact performance. Thus, the study evaluates the effectiveness of the AS7265x triad spectroscopy sensor, incorporating machine learning algorithms. An experimental setup …

Energy is one of the necessities in life. The Philippines has abundant energy resources; however, as the energy demand increases, energy reserves are diminishing faster than they can be replenished, and alternatives remain underutilized due to cost and ethical challenges, resulting in a shortage in energy production. To combat this, bio-piezoelectricity, which transforms mechanical forces into electrical energy through an organic material, offers a secure substitute for current energy resources. This study aims to determine the efficacy of queen pineapple crown leaves (QPCL) as a bio-piezoelectric generator in energy generation, harvesting, and conversion efficiency. The leaves served as the primary …
