Evaluating Ecosystem Health Of The Salt Creek Basin Through Two-Eyed Seeing, Shelby Serritella
Evaluating Ecosystem Health Of The Salt Creek Basin Through Two-Eyed Seeing, Shelby Serritella
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Few instances of prior research into socio-ecological health have brought together both Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Western science, especially in Nebraska. This study attempts to fill this gap in Lancaster County, Nebraska by using “Two-Eyed Seeing”. This equitably combines both Indigenous Knowledge Systems (qualitative data), obtained through oral interviews with Indigenous community members, and Western science (quantitative data), obtained through USGS, UNL, and U.S. Drought Monitor databases, to assess ecosystem health. Changes to the Salt Creek Basin were collected and analyzed through this Two-Eyed Seeing framework. Results found that there are high levels of consensus between both knowledge systems regarding …
The Decline Of Upland Birds In Nebraska: Maximizing Limited Habitat, Hunter Tesarek
The Decline Of Upland Birds In Nebraska: Maximizing Limited Habitat, Hunter Tesarek
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Ring-necked Pheasants were introduced into the United States around 150 years ago and since then have become an important species both culturally and economically. There population health is of growing concern as upland bird populations in much of the United States have been declining rapidly throughout the latter half of the last century. In Nebraska millions of acres have been transformed from habitat that benefits upland birds into row crop agriculture, mostly in the form of corn and soybeans. Rural Mail Carrier Surveys conducted for pheasants from 1960 through 2020 in comparison to change in acres harvested depict the relationship …
Identifying A Consumer–Producer Agricultural Knowledge Gap, Aspen Rittgarn
Identifying A Consumer–Producer Agricultural Knowledge Gap, Aspen Rittgarn
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
The purpose of this paper and online survey was to see if an agricultural knowledge gap between consumers and producers be found. Low agricultural literacy rates can lead to misconceptions of the agriculture industry, unhealthy food choices, environmentally unfriendly product choices, food waste, etc. The hypothesis for this thesis is that those born in the mid1960s to early 1980s (Generation X) will be the start of an increased knowledge gap. The survey was compiled of both qualitative and quantitative questions and questions were inspired by American Farm Bureau’s AITC Benchmarks. Responses were analyzed and the results revealed that my participants …
Beyond States: A Constitutional History Of Territory, Statehood, And Nation-Building, Craig Green
Beyond States: A Constitutional History Of Territory, Statehood, And Nation-Building, Craig Green
University of Chicago Law Review
The United States has always been more than simply a group of united states. The constitutional history of national union and component states is linked to a third category: federal territory. This Article uses an integrated history of territory, statehood, and union to develop a new framework for analyzing constitutional statehood. Three historical periods are crucial—the Founding Era, the Civil War, and Reconstruction—as times when statehood was especially malleable as a matter of constitutional law. During each of those formative periods, the most important constitutional struggles about statehood and the union involved federal territories.
Conflicts about territories reveal an important …
Improving Inference Speed Of Perception Systems In Autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Bradley Selee
Improving Inference Speed Of Perception Systems In Autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicles, Bradley Selee
All Theses
Autonomous vehicle (AV) development has become one of the largest research challenges in businesses and research institutions. While much research has been done, autonomous driving still requires extensive amounts of research due to its immense, multi-factorial difficulty. Autonomous vehicles rely on many complex systems to function, make accurate decisions, and, above all, provide maximum safety. One of the most crucial components of autonomous driving is the perception system.
The perception system allows the vehicle to identify its surroundings and make accurate, but safe, decisions through the use of computer vision techniques like object detection, image segmentation, and path planning. Due …
Making Of Wars: Analysis Of The Franchise Management Of God Of War And Gears Of War, William Seaton
Making Of Wars: Analysis Of The Franchise Management Of God Of War And Gears Of War, William Seaton
All Theses
Two of the most prominent franchises in the video game industry are God of War and Gears of War. These franchises, produced by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and Xbox Game Studios (XGS), respectively, and their presentation through company blogs offer insight into the franchise management strategies and franchise conceptualizations that their parent companies have. Understanding these franchising aspects furthers knowledge on how these companies, two of the three largest video game producers, engage in franchising behaviors through discourse. Utilizing a framework of the discourse of franchise paratexts, this thesis examines those franchising tactics and discursive frames that the companies …
Neonate Atlantic Sharpnose Shark (Rhizoprionodon Terraenovae) Relative Abundance And Body Condition In Two South Carolina Estuaries Varying In Urbanization, Rileigh E. Hawk
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Urbanization near estuaries has been shown to affect the growth and survival of juvenile sharks using the system as a nursery. North Inlet and Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, are similarly-sized, tidally-dominated, bar-built estuaries with extensive Sporobolus-lined tidal creeks but differ in degree of human impact. Previously, Murrells Inlet was shown to have a lower abundance and diversity of large sharks than North Inlet and Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae) were shown to use North Inlet as a primary nursery. To examine potential differences in neonate shark abundance and growth between a developed estuary, Murrells Inlet, and a protected estuary, North …

Neurology Articles
BACKGROUND: Vascular Dementia (VaD) refers to dementia caused by cerebrovascular disease and/or reduced blood flow to the brain and is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. We previously found that in middle-aged rats subjected to a multiple microinfarction (MMI) model of VaD, treatment with AV-001, a Tie2 receptor agonist, significantly improves short-term memory, long-term memory, as well as improves preference for social novelty compared to control MMI rats. In this study, we tested the early therapeutic effects of AV-001 on inflammation and glymphatic function in rats subjected to VaD.
METHODS: Male, middle-aged Wistar rats (10-12 m), …

Preserving Constitutional Integrity In The Age Of Cyberwarfare: A Paper Tiger, Or Death By A Thousand Cuts?, Darren Singh
Preserving Constitutional Integrity In The Age Of Cyberwarfare: A Paper Tiger, Or Death By A Thousand Cuts?, Darren Singh
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
The Constitution is meant to serve as a necessary constraint on unilateral Executive military actions. Today, nation-states and non-state actors can launch devastating cyberattacks on the infrastructure, economy, military, and democratic systems of the United States. These attacks do not fall within the realm of “hostile actions” necessary to constitute war. Cyberattacks from adversaries are best deterred with offensive cyberattacks of our own. The President is the best actor to superintend and direct this active defense. Neither the Constitution nor the War Powers Resolution, however, offer a framework for how the United States may respond to these threats while also …

Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Research on animal ethics in tourism has gained traction but posthumanist approaches to wildlife (eco)tourism remain sparse. There has never been a more urgent need to redress this paucity in theory and practice. More than 60% of the world’s wildlife has died-off in the last 50 years, 100 million-plus nonhuman animals are used for entertainment in wildlife tourist attractions (WTAs), more than one billion “wildlife” live in captivity, and some scholars argue that earth has entered its sixth mass extinction event known as the Anthropocene. This paper presents a posthumanist multispecies livelihoods framework (MLF) based on an applied ethnographic study …

Why Indiana Harbor Is The Worst Torts Decision In American History
Why Indiana Harbor Is The Worst Torts Decision In American History
Connecticut Law Review
Judge Richard A. Posner’s opinion for the Seventh Circuit in Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Co. v. American Cyanamid Co., concerning a spill of the hazardous chemical acrylonitrile at a railyard near Chicago, is considered the definitive statement on the abnormally dangerous activity doctrine. That doctrine (also known as the ultrahazardous activity doctrine) holds that one who engages in an abnormally dangerous activity is strictly liable for harm caused to others, regardless of negligence. However, Judge Posner’s opinion suggests that strict liability should rarely displace the negligence standard, even for commercial activities that externalize high degrees of risk. That approach leads …
Mitochondrial Roles In Developmentally Programmed Heart Disease, Eli John Louwagie
Mitochondrial Roles In Developmentally Programmed Heart Disease, Eli John Louwagie
Dissertations and Theses
Offspring of diabetic and obese mothers (ODOM) have greater risks of heart disease at birth and later in life. However, prevention is hindered because underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Mounting studies in the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease field suggest that mitochondria play key roles in developmentally programmed heart disease similar to the roles they play in cardiomyopathy in adults with diabetes and obesity. However, whether mitochondria are responsible for the short[1]and long-term cardiac disease seen in ODOM remains unknown. Here, we sought to delineate the roles of mitochondria in the hearts of ODOM, determine whether mitochondria are playing …

Development Of Three Novel Edna Assays For Detecting Coastal Sharks, Kristina Dawn Flanigan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis is an emerging, non-invasive community monitoring tool. This study aimed to determine if eDNA methods can be reliably used in a large brackish, partially mixed estuary by developing and testing three novel eDNA primers, for Sandbar Sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus), Blacknose Sharks (Carcharhinus acronotus), and Bonnetheads (Sphyrna tiburo). These primers were designed to target 109, 156, and 120 base pair (bp) fragments, respectively, of the highly conserved NAD2 gene in the mitochondrial genome of each species. Primer function was validated through testing against 102 known genomic source samples and 25 filtered water samples from aquaria in which …

Felicissima Matrum: The Construction Of Maternal Identity In Ovid's Metamorphoses And Fasti, Savannah Rose Wahlgren
Felicissima Matrum: The Construction Of Maternal Identity In Ovid's Metamorphoses And Fasti, Savannah Rose Wahlgren
Classical Studies Honors Theses
After finally gaining control of Rome as princeps, Augustus was tasked with both ushering in a new era of peace and a new imperial form of government. To contrast the masculine world of war that he sought to leave behind, Augustus turned his attention to mothers and used them in imperial ideology and imagery as symbols of prosperity and morality. This was supported through his moral legislation, which brought tangible, legal benefits to motherhood in addition to the benefits of status that were more loosely and implicitly defined. The transition to monarchy also brought attention to mothers as the importance …
Exploring The Effects Of Microarchitecture On Astrocyte Behavior And Vascular Remodeling In Spinal Cord Injury, Devin Gerber
Exploring The Effects Of Microarchitecture On Astrocyte Behavior And Vascular Remodeling In Spinal Cord Injury, Devin Gerber
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a common condition and is characterized by traumatic and progressive damage that results in limited neuron regeneration and thus a restricted recovery. In SCI, the vasculature is also severely damaged, which exacerbates inflammation at the injury site. Specifically, insufficient angiogenesis occurs at the site of injury due to the fibrotic pathological microenvironment1 . SCI also leads to the formation of a fluid-filled cavity and thus gliosis and fibrosis, forming a dense glial and fibrotic scar around the cavity. The microenvironment at the injury site plays a significant role in astrocyte behavior, promoting the transformation of …
Microbiome Recovery Of The Upper Clark Fork River Restoration Site, Danella Stapley
Microbiome Recovery Of The Upper Clark Fork River Restoration Site, Danella Stapley
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Soil microorganisms provide ecosystem functions and services critical for life, can have lasting effects on aboveground plant communities, and can serve as indicators of soil quality. However, biotic indicators are underrepresented in soil health assessments. Incorporating microbial soil evaluations in ecological restoration studies are important in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding about their role in healthy soil development. In this study, we used three bioindicators to assess the post-restoration soil microbiome recovery of the Upper Clark Fork River: extracellular soil enzyme activity, microbial biomass, and microbiome community and diversity. We found that microbiome recovery rate varied at different …

Ciclesonide Protects Against Lps-Induced Lung Endothelial Inflammation And Acute Lung Injury, Heather Menden, Sherry M. Mabry, Venkatesh Sampath
Research at Children's Mercy Month 2023
Background: Synthetic glucocorticoids (sGC) are used to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants. Ciclesonide (CIC), a sGC pro-drug, is FDA-approved for treatment of children with asthma. We reported that in comparison with dexamethasone, CIC does not affect brain development when used in the neonatal period. We have also shown that LPS, derived from gram negative bacteria, causes lung endothelial cell (EC) immune activation that contributes to sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI). In this study, we hypothesized that LPS-induced endothelial inflammation and ALI will be inhibited by CIC.
Objectives: a) Investigate the mechanisms by which CIC inhibits lung EC inflammation …

Multi-Factor Disturbance Regimes Drive Soil Fungal Community Composition Across A Southwestern Us Riparian Cottonwood Landscape, Rich Wagner
Biology ETDs
In southwestern US riparian cottonwood forests, anthropogenic changes have replaced the structuring force of seasonal flooding with novel multi-factor disturbance regimes, driving these ecosystems to new states. While the impetus for restoration is high, little attention has been paid to understanding belowground feedbacks from these new drivers. Using high-throughput sequencing of environmental DNA, we compared the impacts of fires, exotic plants, restoration practices and lower levels of disturbance on soil fungal community composition and diversity across a riparian cottonwood landscape in New Mexico. We focused on mycorrhizal fungi for the benefits they may confer upon cottonwoods. We found that along …
Transcriptional Regulation Of Stem Cell Function In The Drosophila Central Nervous System, Amalia S. Parra
Transcriptional Regulation Of Stem Cell Function In The Drosophila Central Nervous System, Amalia S. Parra
Biology ETDs
Development of multicellular organisms depends on coordination of various molecular mechanisms to ensure proper tissue size and structure. This is accomplished through intrinsic and extrinsic cues that regulate cell growth and proliferation both spatially and temporally. These well-coordinated signals are present from early developmental stages and remain active throughout development to ensure tissue structure is appropriate for function. This is particularly important in early cell types that form specialized lineages such as stem cells or those found throughout the body such as epithelia. While much progress has been made in understanding growth regulatory mechanisms, several fundamental aspects remain unknown. This …

Daughters Of Depression : A Critical-Hermeneutic Phenomenological Examination Of Adult Black Women’S Experiences With Strong Black Woman’S Role When Mothered By Women With Perceived Depression, Christin D. Haynes
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Black American women are experiencing chronic depression at alarming rates. Major racial/sex disparities in disease prevalence indicates Black American women are at increased risk for depression onset due to exposure to poverty and traumatic life events. With the rise of single, female-headed households, children are at increased risk for exposure to maternal mental illness which is defined as an adverse childhood experience impacting their development through adulthood. Black American mothers have the additional burden of racially socializing all children to learn how to manage systematic racist structures embedded in American society, yet daughters require the additional socialization for gender biases. …
