I make toxic pastoral paintings in the style of the Dutch and Old Masters, and media installations which depict natural landscapes as distanced, deconstructed forms. What I explore most in my practice is our damaged relationship with land and nature, and our capitalist and media ecologies as artificial landscapes which suspend us from the natural. In a dissection of the dualisms of man and nature, and progress and sustainability, I create microcosms of our detached condition.

I create paintings, sculptures, and rubbings to pay tribute to the earthly beings found within my immediate surroundings. I use indexical processes that stain, trace, and record to preserve a moment in time. The process of rubbing is a tactile and meticulous activity of excavation. It is an imprint of what was once there, a mapping of attentive contact. The works are dependent upon the physicality of the host as I engage directly with the plants, seeds, weather, and trees that surround me. The rubbing’s flatness actively constructs a new reality; a liminal space hovers between the impression and the …

My studio practice focuses on the Asian American diaspora and the feelings of displacement that arise from being away from one’s homeland. This paper traces the beginning of my journey to find a way to make art that observes and applies Buddhist philosophies, practices and acknowledges the intrinsic energy found in all things. I create sculptures inspired by the qi of rocks to explore my ongoing struggles with my bicultural identity. Through the continuous pouring of wax and plaster that create stalagmites on to domestic objects, I imbue positive qi into my artworks to pass on to whoever seeks it. …

MFA in Visual Art
Land | Lineage is an in-depth text of my thoughts and tha artistic choices I make within my work. In my thesis I use tha concept of Black Ecology to understand art rooted in tha relationship between race and geography. Black culture and city spaces in proximity to natural landscapes, or edgelands, reveal tha social and physical conditions of a place where these two worlds collide and form distinct characteristics of site, sound, and human interaction.
My research also focuses on tha theory of place-based works to reconceptualize the lost stories and complexities of city trauma and joy within my …

My most recent body of work was produced out of the pleasure of exploring pure formal and processual painting. In this text—divided by sections titled like a traditional opera to highlight the mise-en-scene quality of my artwork—the reader will find clues about the context, inspirations, and desires that led to my current practice, such as my ambivalent condition as an immigrant, my exposure to post-conceptual abstraction embodied in Christopher Wool’s provocative oeuvre, and my interest in offering the viewer the experience of what I call “an aesthetic interrogation.” l have privileged in this thesis my own voice and character with …

Much like music, organic life is an absurd, improbable, and serendipitous instance. I set circular, electric, acoustic, and magnetic forces in motion and allow them to coalesce freely in the hopes of synthesizing unexpected moments of beauty, connection, and harmony.
Extracted Entities And Their Images As Spectres, Seulki Seo
Extracted Entities And Their Images As Spectres, Seulki Seo
MFA in Visual Art
In this paper, I propose the concept of “Extracted Entity” as a means of postcolonial and technocolonial analysis through the lens of Othering. Extracted Entity, which is a term I coined in 2019, refers to an entity that has been involuntarily removed from its place of origin and relocated elsewhere, either through force or chance. By tracing the trajectory of Extracted Entity’s migration, I explore the role of art and technology to demonstrate how the concept could be a clue to overcome Othering.

This thesis aims to convey the "leisure" and "slow" Chinese life concept. This Thesis shows the lives of people in different dynasties from a third-person perspective. Using traditional costumes as the carrier, it focuses on using semi-realistic visual styles to show the connection between emotions and the environment, creating an atmosphere-filled picture, and arousing the audience's thinking about the rhythm of life and their spiritual yearning for the non-obvious pleasures in life.

Checkpoint immunotherapy has yielded meaningful responses across many cancers but has shown modest efficacy in advanced prostate cancer. B7 homolog 3 protein (B7-H3/CD276) is an immune checkpoint molecule and has emerged as a promising therapeutic target. However, much remains to be understood regarding B7-H3's role in cancer progression, predictive biomarkers for B7-H3-targeted therapy, and combinatorial strategies. Our multi-omics analyses identified B7-H3 as one of the most abundant immune checkpoints in prostate tumors containing PTEN and TP53 genetic inactivation. Here, we sought in vivo genetic evidence for, and mechanistic understanding of, the role of B7-H3 in PTEN/TP53-deficient prostate …

The molecular and functional contributions of intratumoral nerves to disease remain largely unknown. We localized synaptic markers within tumors suggesting that these nerves form functional connections. Consistent with this, electrophysiological analysis shows that malignancies harbor significantly higher electrical activity than benign disease or normal tissues. We also demonstrate pharmacologic silencing of tumoral electrical activity. Tumors implanted in transgenic animals lacking nociceptor neurons show reduced electrical activity. These data suggest that intratumoral nerves remain functional at the tumor bed. Immunohistochemical staining demonstrates the presence of the neuropeptide, Substance P (SP), within the tumor space. We show that tumor cells express the …

Shopping is important in our life, especially food shopping. Almost every family needs to go shopping once per week and spend lots of time and energy on it. This project proposes the design of an application to help people have a better shopping experience by saving time, saving energy, and saving money. The application combines online shopping and in-person shopping in a new shopping mode. People don’t need to pay the expensive delivery fee and wait a long time to get food which could be unfresh. And they also don’t need to spend lots of time at the supermarket, which …

Although the role of RNA binding proteins (RBPs) in extracellular RNA (exRNA) biology is well established, their exRNA cargo and distribution across biofluids are largely unknown. To address this gap, we extend the exRNA Atlas resource by mapping exRNAs carried by extracellular RBPs (exRBPs). This map was developed through an integrative analysis of ENCODE enhanced crosslinking and immunoprecipitation (eCLIP) data (150 RBPs) and human exRNA profiles (6,930 samples). Computational analysis and experimental validation identified exRBPs in plasma, serum, saliva, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and cell-culture-conditioned medium. exRBPs carry exRNA transcripts from small non-coding RNA biotypes, including microRNA (miRNA), piRNA, tRNA, small …

Mutual Aid: The Other Law Of The Jungle. Gauthier Chapelle And Pablo Servigne. Cambridge, Polity Press. 2022. 310 Pp, Tom P. Flower Dr
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
In 1902, the anarchist Peter Kropotkin published Mutual Aid in which he promoted a radical perspective on evolution in which cooperation, as well as selfishness, drive the form, diversification and organization of life on earth. Despite initial recognition, Kropotkin’s contributions have been largely forgotten, even as modern evolutionary theory has recognized the central role of cooperation. In Mutual Aid: the other law of the jungle, Pablo Servigne and Gauthier Chappelle restore Kropotkin’s insights to their rightful place as foundational for our understanding of evolution. They further seek to overturn the pernicious misconception of the 20th century, that nature is …

Asking For It: Gendered Dimensions Of Surveillance Capitalism, Jessica Rizzo
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
Advertising and privacy were once seen as mutually antagonistic. In the 1950s and 1960s, Americans went to court to fight for their right to be free from the invasion of privacy presented by unwanted advertising, but a strange realignment took place in the 1970s. Radical feminists were among those who were extremely concerned about the collection and computerization of personal data—they worried about private enterprise getting a hold of that data and using it to target women—but liberal feminists went in a different direction, making friends with advertising because they saw it as strategically valuable.
Liberal feminists argued that in …

Dismodernizing The Working Class And Social Reproduction, After The Pandemic Lumpenproletariat: Towards An Autonomist Disability Perspective, Arianna Introna Dr
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
Capitalism establishes a fundamental connection between the constitution of society and the sphere of production. Whether in the form of direct participation or indirectly through the performance of social reproduction, the working class is expected to be working. The universals of capitalist society as a work-based society revolve around the material and symbolic centrality of the working class, its struggle and its social reproduction. This association is reinforced by the othering effect that the definitional politics of the universal working class has on subjects defined by their non-relation to the sphere of production, but also by the categories we …

This comment will not argue the legitimacy of the policy aims of the Twenty-First Amendment, rather, it will argue the current regulatory and legal apparatuses which govern the alcohol industry are no longer moored to the original moral and philosophical values the Temperance Movement, or those morals and values which carried over into the Twenty-First Amendment. To aid in understanding the current state of alcohol regulation, Section II will outline the history of liquor regulation in the United States from the Founding to the present. Second, Section II will examine the history of legislation and regulation of alcohol that led …

Evaluation Of Caffeine And Taurine Administration In Improving Neurodegenerative Dysfunction In Caenorhabditis Elegans Overexpressing The App Ortholog: Apl-1, Perry Chandler Mullis, Heather M. Cathcart
Research Day
INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is characterized by an over-accumulation of β-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary Tau tangles present within the brain, contributing to associative neurodegeneration. Taurine is an essential amino acid found within the nervous system; however, it is one of a few amino acids not required in routine protein synthesis. Caffeine and taurine have both been identified as active ingredients in energy drinks with the benefit of improving nervous system function, supporting neural recovery, and synaptogenesis. In previous studies, taurine has been shown to increase memory retention in animal models, and consumption of caffeine reflects improvement in locomotion, memory, and …

A Comparison Of Large Tbsa Scald Versus Flame Burns In Young Children, Ashley Daniel
Research Days
Background: It is generally accepted that of children with the same total body surface area of burns, those with flame burns seem to have longer lengths of stay and more complications than those with scald burns. Anecdotally we have seen the opposite to be true. Among a consortium of five US pediatric burn centers participating in the Pediatric Injury Quality Improvement Collaborative (PIQIC), young children with scald burns seem to experience disproportionately more frequent and severe complications compared to their older counterparts and compared to patients of a similar age with flame burns.
Objectives/Goal: In this multi-institutional study, we compared …

Background: Stress is common among caregivers of hospitalized children. In addition to stress related to their child’s illness, caregivers experience stress related to financial strain and food insecurity during their child’s hospitalization. The burden of financial strain and food insecurity related to pediatric hospitalizations may vary between rural and urban populations.
Objectives/Goal: To identify financial strain and food insecurity experienced by caregivers of hospitalized children and to describe differences between rural and urban populations.
Methods/Design: A prospective cross-sectional survey enrolled a random sample of caregivers of hospitalized children between 8/31/2021 and 12/2/2022 at a single children’s hospital. Demographic information was …
Female Authorship Concordance In Academic Pediatrics, Roxana Guggenmous, Jessica L. Bettenhausen, Jessica L. Markham
Female Authorship Concordance In Academic Pediatrics, Roxana Guggenmous, Jessica L. Bettenhausen, Jessica L. Markham
Research Days
Background: Gender disparities are well described in medicine and academia. Despite a catalyzed movement towards gender equity, female physician-scientists remain at risk for experiencing biases in hiring practices, compensation, promotion, appointment to leadership positions, and achievement of extramural funding through the National Institutes of Health. In pediatrics, the female workforce has grown consistently over time, with female physicians comprising 72.3% of the workforce as of 2021, yet prior work suggests that this growth is not fully reflected in academic publications. Achieving gender parity in academic publication may help reduce gender-based disparities impacting career advancement. Therefore, we sought to describe the …
Maternal Effects On Growth, Leila Ikeda
Maternal Effects On Growth, Leila Ikeda
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Maternal effects generally refer to the impact that a mother's traits have upon the connection between direct genes of the offspring and the maternal environment provided for the offspring, shaping offspring's growth and development. While direct maternal effects occur through maternal provisioning or behavior, indirect maternal effects occur through transmission of maternal traits to the offspring via their interaction with the environment. Interval mapping revealed several significant QTLs, places where the maternal genome directly affects offspring phenotype, ranging from weeks 1-20, on chromosomes (chrs) 7 and 18 respectively, and other suggestive QTLs on Chrs 1, 3, 4, 6, and 14.

Honors Program Theses and Projects
In today's world, women are attempting to take control of their reproductive choices. Some have been met with roadblocks that may prohibit or limit access to women's healthcare centers and family planning services. This research explores women’s reproductive health and contraception usage and the impact of cultural influences globally. Cultural adversities may overshadow the benefits of having access to healthcare facilities along with contributing to the circulation of inaccurate information. This may prevent or deter women from accessing healthcare facilities and methods of family planning. Understanding variation in the United States and in other cultures will contribute to the global …

“In Each Class I Went To, There Were People That I Was Able To Talk To”: Sense Of Belonging In Stem Linked-Learning Communities, Shannon Hafey
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Women, students of color, and students of low socioeconomic status are historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs (Apriceno, 2020). Interventions such as linked-learning communities have been introduced in STEM programs to improve student success and to combat underrepresentation; however, the research thus far is predominantly quantitative. While providing useful insight, quantitative data does not reflect unique individual experiences, so qualitative research will better allow for understanding of student experiences. This research examined the role of linked-learning communities among first-semester STEM students with varying social identities and backgrounds. During semi-structured interviews, participants (N = 10) were asked …
