Phantom Shootings, Allan Ambris

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This capstone is a website designed to critique NYC Open Data reporting with respect to shootings through a series of visualizations and discoveries. The NYPD Shooting Incidents datasets (Historic and Year to Date) introduce themselves to the user by claiming to be a “list of every shooting incident that occurred in NYC.” The supplied documentation reveals that this is not the case.

After understanding the supporting materials, there are still undisclosed truths. My exploration of the data revealed that a single victim may be represented across multiple entries. Additionally, multiple victims may be represented by a single entry. It is …

American Kestrel Migration: Insights And Challenges From Tracking Individuals Across The Annual Cycle, Anjolene R. Hunt, Jesse L. Watson, Jason M. Winiarski, Ron R. Porter, Julie A. Heath

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Natural variation in migratory strategies across the range of the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) creates a unique opportunity for comparative research of annual cycles. However, it can be logistically and technically challenging to track such a small but highly mobile species. We tagged American Kestrels with light-level geolocators or satellite transmitters with the aim of estimating migration timing and connectivity, and we monitored a subset of satellite-tagged individuals during the breeding season to assess transmitter function and wear. We recovered geolocators from six of 49 (12%) tagged individuals. One geolocator-tagged individual migrated approximately 1235 km from its Idaho …

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of vitamin C and probiotic which consists of five species of beneficial bacteria and two species of fungi on performance, blood parameters, and intestinal CLDN-2 gene expression of broilers during heat stress (HS). A total of 400 broilers were randomly divided into five groups, each of which received a different treatment. The first group was considered a negative control and did not experience any HS (C-); the second group was considered a positive control (C+) and was exposed to HS; the third group received only vitamin C (250 …

Dispersion In Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Film: An Application Of Bogoliubov–Valatin Transformation For Hamiltonian Diagonalization, Chandra M. Adhikari, Da’Shawn M. Morris, Thomas W. Noonan, Tikaram Neupane, Basu R. Lamichhane, Bhoj R. Gautam

College of Health, Science, and Technology

We present a theoretical study on the energy dispersion of an ultrathin film of periodically-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with the help of the Bogoliubov–Valatin transformation. The Hamiltonian of the film was derived using the many-particle green function technique in the Matsubara frequency formalism. The periodic array of SWCNTs was embedded in a dielectric with comparatively higher permittivity than the substrate and the superstrate such that the SWCNT film became independent with the axis of quantization but keeps the thickness as the variable parameter, making the film neither two-dimensional nor three-dimensional, but transdimensional. It was revealed that the energy dispersion …

Environmental Law, Travis M. Trimble Jun 2023

Environmental Law, Travis M. Trimble

Mercer Law Review

In 2022, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit held that a plaintiff and the organization to which she belonged had standing, based on her claimed injury to her aesthetic well-being, to bring a Clean Water Act (CWA) citizen suit against a developer who had allegedly filled a wetland in violation of its permit, even though the plaintiff had never visited the wetland and even though the wetland was on private property not accessible to the plaintiff. The United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama concluded that acid mine leachate from a refuse pile …

Ready. Aim. Fire! The Eleventh Circuit Takes Its Shot At The Second Amendment’S Application To Illegal Aliens, Elizabeth Mcdaniel

Mercer Law Review

The United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit was faced with a constitutional question involving the People and the Second Amendment of the Constitution in United States v. Jimenez-Shilon. The issue was whether 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(5)(A), (the Statute) which prohibits illegal aliens from possessing firearms, violates the Second Amendment. Relying on the historical context of the Constitution and prior Supreme Court caselaw concerning the Second Amendment, the Eleventh Circuit held it does not. While this case was one of first impression in the Eleventh Circuit, the constitutionality of the Statute has now been litigated in nine …

The Fourth Amendment Without Police, Shawn E. Fields Jun 2023

The Fourth Amendment Without Police, Shawn E. Fields

University of Chicago Law Review

What role will the Fourth Amendment play in a world without police? As academics, activists, and lawmakers explore alternatives to traditional law enforcement, it bears asking whether the amendment primarily tasked with regulating police investigations would also regulate postpolice public safety agencies. Surprisingly, the answer is often no. Courts are reluctant to recognize protections from government searches or seizures outside criminal investigations, and they are even more reluctant to require probable cause or a warrant for such conduct. Thus, by removing most public safety functions outside the criminal sphere, abolitionists also move intrusive government conduct outside these traditional strictures and …

Regulatory Trading, David A. Weisbach Jun 2023

Regulatory Trading, David A. Weisbach

University of Chicago Law Review

Regulatory trading systems, such as the SO2 cap-and-trade system, are ubiquitous in environmental and natural resources law. In addition to cap-and-trade systems for pollutants such as SO2, NOx, and CO2, environmental and natural resources law uses trading in areas such as endangered species, water quality, wetlands, vehicle mileage, and forestry and farming practices. Trading, however, is rarely used as a regulatory approach in other areas of law. This Article seeks to identify the reasons for this dichotomy. To understand the dichotomy, the Article examines the uses of trading in environmental and natural resources law, where it has been successful, and …

Impact Of Nitrogen Availability On The Accumulation Of Vegetative Lipids In Sorghum, Leticia Felicio Pasqualino Jun 2023

Impact Of Nitrogen Availability On The Accumulation Of Vegetative Lipids In Sorghum, Leticia Felicio Pasqualino

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is a versatile and prosperous feedstock crop for renewable energy production. With the increase in bioenergy demand, the production of higher oil content per biomass in a feedstock crop is a highly desirable trait for the biofuel conversion process yield. Especially if this outcome can be achieved using fewer inputs in the field, such as nitrogen. In microalgae species, nitrogen limitation has been associated with changes in the carbon storage metabolic pathway favoring triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation. In this context, this study aimed to assess whether nitrogen starvation would result in a similar outcome in …

Desert Locust (Schistocerca Gregaria) Invasion Risk And Vegetation Damage In A Key Upsurge Area, Raphael Mongare, Elfatih M. Abdel-Rahman, Bester Tawona Mudereri, Emily Kimathi, Simon Onywere, Henri E.Z. Tonnang

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

In the recent past, the Horn of Africa witnessed an upsurge in the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) invasion. This has raised major concerns over the massive food insecurity, socioeconomic impacts, and livelihood losses caused by these recurring invasions. This study determined the potential vegetation damage due to desert locusts (DLs) and predicted the suitable habitat at high risk of invasion by the DLs using current and future climate change scenarios in Kenya. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for the period 2018–2020 was computed using multi-date Sentinel-2 imagery in the Google Earth Engine platform. This was performed to assess the …

Where Is My Spot? Few-Shot Image Generation Via Latent Subspace Optimization, Chenxi Zheng, Bangzhen Liu, Huaidong Zhang, Xuemiao Xu, Shengfeng He Jun 2023

Where Is My Spot? Few-Shot Image Generation Via Latent Subspace Optimization, Chenxi Zheng, Bangzhen Liu, Huaidong Zhang, Xuemiao Xu, Shengfeng He

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Image generation relies on massive training data that can hardly produce diverse images of an unseen category according to a few examples. In this paper, we address this dilemma by projecting sparse few-shot samples into a continuous latent space that can potentially generate infinite unseen samples. The rationale behind is that we aim to locate a centroid latent position in a conditional StyleGAN, where the corresponding output image on that centroid can maximize the similarity with the given samples. Although the given samples are unseen for the conditional StyleGAN, we assume the neighboring latent subspace around the centroid belongs to …

Rhythms In Barriers And Fluids: Circadian Clock Regulation In The Aging Neurovascular Unit, Lea Skapetze, Sharon Owino, Eng H. Lo, Ken Arai, Martha Merrow, Mary Harrington Jun 2023

Rhythms In Barriers And Fluids: Circadian Clock Regulation In The Aging Neurovascular Unit, Lea Skapetze, Sharon Owino, Eng H. Lo, Ken Arai, Martha Merrow, Mary Harrington

Neuroscience: Faculty Publications

The neurovascular unit is where two very distinct physiological systems meet: The central nervous system (CNS) and the blood. The permeability of the barriers separating these systems is regulated by time, including both the 24 h circadian clock and the longer processes of aging. An endogenous circadian rhythm regulates the transport of molecules across the blood-brain barrier and the circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid and the glymphatic system. These fluid dynamics change with time of day, and with age, and especially in the context of neurodegeneration. Factors may differ depending on brain region, as can be highlighted by consideration of …

Understanding the chemical composition of our planet's crust was one of the biggest questions of the 20th century. More than 100 years later, we are still far from understanding the global patterns in the bioavailability and spatial coupling of elements in topsoils worldwide, despite their importance for the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we measured the bioavailability and coupling of thirteen macro- and micronutrients and phytotoxic elements in topsoils (3–8 cm) from a range of terrestrial ecosystems across all continents (∼10,000 observations) and in response to global change manipulations (∼5,000 observations). For this, we incubated between 1 and …

Knowledge of a species’ distribution throughout a landscape is crucial for developing long-term conservation practices and effective management plans. Accurate distributional data are particularly important for threatened or rare species with a broad geographic range and low detectability in their preferred habitats, as surveying and successfully encountering this type of species is oftentimes difficult. One such species is the eastern massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus), a small- bodied, federally threatened rattlesnake with a distribution centered around the Great Lakes region. The current status of many massasauga populations remains uncertain, hindering effective recovery efforts. We used single-season occupancy models to reassess the status …

Calculating Carbon: Calculate The Carbon Emissions From Your Farm Business, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Climate science factsheets

Farming systems produce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, primarily in the form of methane (mostly caused by animal digestion and respiration) and nitrous oxide (mostly from fertilisers).

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) recommend undertaking a basic carbon account to understand and explore options to reduce your emissions and consider which approaches will fit into your business plan. A baseline carbon account for your farm will give the total GHG emissions for the farm and the carbon intensity of your products such as wool, meat and grain.

The Hidden Costs Behind Cheap Clothing: Addressing Fast Fashion’S Environmental And Humanitarian Impact, Alexandra L. Bernard

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The increasing speed at which social media trends come and go has caused fashion trends to accelerate in response to consumers’ ever-changing demands. To keep up with the latest fads, fast fashion companies design their clothing only to withstand a couple of uses before the item is no longer in good condition. The manufacture and discard of cheaply made clothing creates a variety of environmental issues. Brands conceal the treatment and compensation of their workers throughout the supply chain; the available information suggests that garment workers are mistreated. Finally, the disposal of these clothing items creates tension between the United …

Holy Matter Making Holy Meaning: Fashioning Memory, Community And Dissimilar Similitude In Middle Dutch Sister-Books And The Book Of Margery Kempe, Godelinde G. Perk

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

The Middle Dutch sister-books and The Book of Margery Kempe are fifteenth-century vernacular texts by women chronicling their female subjects’ conversion and arduous attempts at a holy life. They share an (auto)hagiographic enterprise and formal and thematic features, including a display of rags and riches by the vitae’s subjects and a desire for mnemonic engagement on the part of the readers with the text. This article is the first to present the Diepenveen and Deventer sister-books and the Book as conversation partners. I draw on two main conceptual tools: 1) medieval memoria and 2) the notion of “dissimilar similitude” …

Both Human And Holy: A Veneration Of Personhood Through Mythic Means, Abigail Porter Jun 2023

Both Human And Holy: A Veneration Of Personhood Through Mythic Means, Abigail Porter

MFA in Visual Arts Theses

Mythology acts as a reflection of humanity, a connection of personhood and storytelling that spans through history. This essay covers how the ideas of myth, personhood, archetype, and portraiture remain central to my work. The nature of mythology is innately human in all aspects, centering on ideas being both fictitious and truthful - which allows the ideas of the dualistic aspects between the personhood and mythos with the figures worked with. My work is about people; I elevate the figure into mythic while using those myths to discuss the aspects of identity. My work leans heavily upon my own fixation …
