Ocean Sight One: Mixed Reality Experience, Lucas Michael Reyna Jun 2023

Ocean Sight One: Mixed Reality Experience, Lucas Michael Reyna

Computer Engineering

Ocean Sight One is an interdisciplinary project group consisting of Cal Poly staff and students from several different departments. It exists to educate the public on the marine ecosystems near the Santa Barbara coastline that is the home of twenty-three abandoned oil rigs. Despite one’s initial reaction to these massive abandoned structures, they actually provide an incredibly diverse dwelling for numerous forms of sea life. The site is a shining beacon for marine ecology researchers trying to formulate how to preserve wildlife in an era of worsening global environmental disruptions. The future of these oil rigs are not certain, as …

The automotive industry has witnessed a massive shift in terms of materials used, ranging from being a metallic heavyweight in the 1950s to employing a hybrid sandwich of multiple material systems. This apparent shift can be attributed to achieving improvements in performance, safety and fuel efficiency, along with responding to the various environmental regulations imposed by different governments. The recent advocacy of Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard of 54.5 MPG by 2025 by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions [1] has spurred the sector at large towards the use of lightweight materials.

Microneedles For Wound Healing, Maya Matheny, Maggie Dubus, Lily Eribes Jun 2023

Microneedles For Wound Healing, Maya Matheny, Maggie Dubus, Lily Eribes

Bioengineering Senior Theses

Microneedles are a virtually painless and minimally invasive transdermal delivery system comprised of an array of micron-sized needles that can be used to deliver cells, drugs, proteins, and vaccines. However, a major challenge to this delivery method is controlling puncture depth. To advance the microneedle landscape, our project aims to identify and characterize the biomechanical cues between a microneedle puncture and a hydrogel skin phantom for pre-clinical testing A stopper microneedle design that controlled puncture depth into the phantom skin model patch to 150μm was tested on millimeter-thick mold-casted alginate slabs. The hysteresis loop differs in the presence and absence …

Why Softmax? Because It Is The Only Consistent Approach To Probability-Based Classification, Anatole Lokshin, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2023

Why Softmax? Because It Is The Only Consistent Approach To Probability-Based Classification, Anatole Lokshin, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical problems, the most effective classification techniques are based on deep learning. In this approach, once the neural network generates values corresponding to different classes, these values are transformed into probabilities by using the softmax formula. Researchers tried other transformation, but they did not work as well as softmax. A natural question is: why is softmax so effective? In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this effectiveness: namely, we prove that softmax is the only consistent approach to probability-based classification. In precise terms, it is the only approach for which two reasonable probability-based ideas -- Least …

“I’Ll Give You My Trust Assets, When You Pry Them From My Cold, Dead Hands”: The Supreme Court Of Georgia Clarifies That A Mere Challenge To A Trust’S Formation Will Not Trigger An In Terrorem Clause, Kiana Johnson

Mercer Law Review

Imagine a television infomercial wakes you up from your sleep. While refocusing your vision, you faintly hear the television say: “Are you a disgruntled beneficiary?” You think to yourself, “I’m not disgruntled, but I sure wish I could have more money.” You are slightly intrigued, so you crank up the volume on the television, and the infomercial emphatically states, “Do you believe you are entitled to ‘ill-gotten gains’?” You think to yourself, “I have no idea what ill-gotten gains are.” I just want ownership over the assets I —.”

Exploring Friendships In J.R.R. Tolkien’S Novels And Adaptations: A Study In Social Media, Fandoms, And Variations, Ashley D. Anderson

Student Theses

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy and their adaptations all reveal the importance of friendship and fandom. Utilizing theorists Walter Benjamin and Henry Jenkins the friendship theme is seen in the various stylistic elements in the films and novels; additionally, a look into the fandom presence on social media, their knowledge, and merchandise reveals why the stories have continued to interest audiences over many generations.

A Pyrrhic Victory? The Political Economy Of Us-China Competition From Trump To Biden, Zhiqun Zhu

Faculty Contributions to Books

Excerpt from Introduction

Cooperation and competition have characterized the nature of the complex US-China relationship for decades. Despite differences in their political systems, values, and national interests, the two countries had been able to work together in dealing with bilateral, regional, and global issues until the relationship sharply deteriorated as a result of recent strategic rivalry. Economic cooperation has served as a bedrock of US-China relations. When political and diplomatic relations are strained, which happens from time to time, it is common economic interests that help keep the relationship cohesive. The business communities on both sides are often the strongest …

Propaganda For War & International Human Rights Standards, Evelyn Aswad Jun 2023

Propaganda For War & International Human Rights Standards, Evelyn Aswad

Chicago Journal of International Law

Shortly after Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union (EU) began suspending Russian state-sponsored media outlets from broadcasting within the EU because they were spreading propaganda for war. The EU also required social media companies to remove user speech containing the banned broadcasts and prohibited search engines from displaying content from those outlets in search results. The EU’s General Court upheld the outlets’ suspension as consistent with both European human rights norms and the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), which contains a mandatory prohibition on propaganda for war in Article 20(1). …

An Historical And Empirical Analysis Of The Cyprès Doctrine, Christopher J. Ryan Jun 2023

An Historical And Empirical Analysis Of The Cyprès Doctrine, Christopher J. Ryan

ACTEC Law Journal

Cy près is a pivotal doctrine in estate law and indeed American jurisprudence. It places courts in the shoes of settlors of charitable trusts to discern not only their original intent but also affords the possibility of continuing the material purpose for which settlors created enduring legacies of philanthropy benefitting society. For this reason, it may well be that no other legal doctrine is as closely tied to the interests of the individual and the collective as cy près. And my first-of-its kind study puts the cy-près doctrine front and center, while providing three major contributions to the field. First, …

Talanoa Digital Storytelling As A Culturally Appropriate Method In Palliative Care Health Research: An Evaluation Of The Narratives Of Pacific Families Caring For Older Loved Ones At End Of Life, Ofa Dewes, Kylah Williams, Suamalie Naisali

Pacific Studies

Talanoa is a Pacific concept of dialogue and storytelling that was used as a framework for producing our digital stories. This article sets out an evaluation of a workshop-based process for talanoa digital storytelling (DST) where aiga (family) carers created their own short autobiographic films and injected their voices into the social and public health discourse and knowledge production. Five digital stories were created. Participants were drawn from a cohort of 33 aiga carers in a study investigating the end of life circumstances of Pacific Peoples dying in advanced age, and the experiences faced by their aiga who carry out …

Faculty Research 2023

Reference ranges provide a powerful tool for diagnostic decision-making in clinical medicine and are enormously valuable for understanding normality in pre-clinical scientific research that uses in vivo models. As yet, there are no published reference ranges for electrocardiography (ECG) in the laboratory mouse. The first mouse-specific reference ranges for the assessment of electrical conduction are reported herein generated from an ECG dataset of unprecedented scale. International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium data from over 26,000 conscious or anesthetized C57BL/6N wildtype control mice were stratified by sex and age to develop robust ECG reference ranges. Interesting findings include that heart rate and key …

Chow Diet In Mouse Aging Studies: Nothing Regular About It., Jennifer Lee, Chloe Purello, Sarah L Booth, Brian Bennett, Christopher D Wiley, Ron Korstanje Jun 2023

Chow Diet In Mouse Aging Studies: Nothing Regular About It., Jennifer Lee, Chloe Purello, Sarah L Booth, Brian Bennett, Christopher D Wiley, Ron Korstanje

Faculty Research 2023

Chow diet is used in the majority of rodent studies and, although assumed to be standardized for dietary source and nutritional contents, it varies widely across commercial formulations. Similarly, current approaches to study aging in rodents involve a single-diet formulation across the lifespan and overlook age-specific nutritional requirements, which may have long-term effects on aging processes. Together, these nutrition-based disparities represent major gaps in geroscience research, affecting the interpretation and reproducibility of the studies. This perspective aims to raise awareness on the importance of rodent diet formulation and proposes that geroscientists include detailed descriptions of all experimental diets and feeding …

Storytelling And Racial Identity: How First-Generation Students Of Color Navigate Their Identities At Predominately White Institutions, Kimberly Garcia Cruz Jun 2023

Storytelling And Racial Identity: How First-Generation Students Of Color Navigate Their Identities At Predominately White Institutions, Kimberly Garcia Cruz

Communication Studies

Utilizing the Narrative Paradigm (Fisher, 1984) and thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) the present study seeks to explore and further understand the ways in which first-generation students of color navigate, and thus make meaning, of their race and class identities at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI). Through qualitative interviews with 14 first-generation students of color (henceforth, FGSOC), themes that emerged included: (1) being used to “it”, (2) financial differences cause a clash with belonging, and (3) cultural spaces bring welcoming feelings. Findings were consistent with previous research regarding barriers faced by first-generation students of color. The current study adds …

“All We Have To Decide Is What To Do With The Time Given To Us”: Using Concepts Of Narrative Time To Draft More Persuasive Legal Arguments, Jennifer Sheppard Jun 2023

“All We Have To Decide Is What To Do With The Time Given To Us”: Using Concepts Of Narrative Time To Draft More Persuasive Legal Arguments, Jennifer Sheppard

Marquette Law Review

When taught to draft a statement of facts or a statement of the case, law students and new lawyers are often told to “tell a story” and that chronological order is usually the best organizational strategy to use when telling that story. While much has been written in recent years on how to draft a story in the legal context, little scholarship is devoted to how to draft a story using chronology or how a lawyer can shape and manipulate time within a story to better advocate for a client. Legal scholars seem to think that the use of chronology …

Rethinking The Status And Temporal Occurrence Of The American Woodcock In Nebraska Because Of Its Unusual Life History, Joel G. Jorgensen, Stephen J. Brenner

Nebraska Bird Review

Historical distribution and range expansion -- We reviewed existing information to evaluate conclusions by previous authors (e.g., Sharpe et al. 2001, Silcock and Jorgensen 2023) that woodcock have expanded their range west since settlement of Nebraska by Euro-Americans. We also provide additional context about the species’ distribution over time using regional resources.

Temporal occurrence and abundance -- We used data from woodcock outfitted with satellite transmitters 2021-2022 and compared it with occurrence data from two sources, eBird (eBird.org 2023) from all years through 2022 and the SFRs in the Nebraska Bird Review 1994–2019. We chose not to use SFR data …

Romanticism’S Fellow Creatures, Alastair Hunt, Ron Broglio, Katey Castellanos, Mario-Ortiz Robles Jun 2023

Romanticism’S Fellow Creatures, Alastair Hunt, Ron Broglio, Katey Castellanos, Mario-Ortiz Robles

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

This panel opens up innovative ways of thinking about Romanticism and “the problem of sharing our earth with other creatures.” Over the last couple of decades, the crisis in human relations with animals has deteriorated to the point that it has become increasingly recognized as a constitutive part of the global environmental crisis. Like the climate crisis, the “animal crisis” originates with the emergence of the industrial form of capitalism in Britain around the turn of the nineteenth century. Appreciation of this historical constellation can and should become the basis of a renewed Romantic animal studies. However, reading Romanticism as …

Switzerland’S Banished Children, Una Suseli O'Connell Jun 2023

Switzerland’S Banished Children, Una Suseli O'Connell

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Over a one hundred year period a practice known as verdingen (indentured servitude) operated in Switzerland. Children were removed from their families and sent to work on farms. It is estimated that between 1860 and 1960, one hundred thousand children were verdingt in this way, a quarter of them in the Canton of Bern. Local parishes paid farmers a monthly allowance to provide disadvantaged children with board and lodging. Although some treated their charges well, countless children suffered terrible hardship over many years. A veil of silence fell across entire communities as clergy, social workers and villagers chose to ignore …

Corporate Democracy And The Intermediary Voting Dilemma, Jill E. Fisch, Jeff Schwartz Jun 2023

Corporate Democracy And The Intermediary Voting Dilemma, Jill E. Fisch, Jeff Schwartz

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

Corporate governance is changing. For the past two decades, the focus of shareholder voting and engagement was deconstructing impediments to shareholder power and increasing managerial accountability. The goal of these interventions was to increase firm value by reducing agency costs. Increasingly, however, environmental and social issues have risen to the fore. This new focus is arguably more about values than value. This Article is the first to argue that, because of this shift, institutional intermediaries—namely, pension and mutual fund managers—can no longer vote and engage on the affairs of their portfolio companies without seeking the input of the pension-plan participants …
