This article highlights the intersections of Mattering, Dialogue, and Love— three seemingly distinct concepts, within schooling and research. Using sister circles, book presentations, and a critical ethnography, we underscore how a critical examination of one’s lived experiences can serve as a platform for anti-racist and social justice work. In this way, this article functions as a medium through which we acknowledge systemic inequities perpetuated within schools and recenter schools as extensions of the communities they serve.

Photographs bear witness. Minimally, they record or collect evidence. Bearing witness is not, however, reducible to showing that this was there then. Bearing witness has an affective dimension. What led a photographer to select this and not that to capture on a light sensitive medium? What was he or she feeling? How was the photographer embodied when he or she trained their lens on the scene to be photographed? How is the photographer’s embodiment culturally situated relative to that scene, and how does his or her embodiment bear on what he or she hopes to witness and for others to …

Nogo-66 receptor 1 (NgR1) binds a variety of structurally dissimilar ligands in the adult central nervous system to inhibit axon extension. Disruption of ligand binding to NgR1 and subsequent signaling can improve neuron outgrowth, making NgR1 an important therapeutic target for diverse neurological conditions such as spinal crush injuries and Alzheimer's disease. Human NgR1 serves as a receptor for mammalian orthoreovirus (reovirus), but the mechanism of virus-receptor engagement is unknown. To elucidate how NgR1 mediates cell binding and entry of reovirus, we defined the affinity of interaction between virus and receptor, determined the structure of the virus-receptor complex, and identified …

Use Of Highway Infrastructure By Bats: A Literature Review And Survey Of The Trans-Pecos Region Of Texas, Holly G. Wilson, Stirling J. Robertson, Richard D. Stevens
Western North American Naturalist
Bats are important components of nature and provide both monetary and nonmonetary benefits to mankind. While anthropogenic effects on wildlife and their habitats are typically viewed as negative, highway infrastructure might benefit numerous species of plants and animals, bats in particular. Cracks, crevices, and grooves within structures provide places for bats to roost. Here we review the literature on this topic as well as describe results of our own survey of bridges and culverts in the Trans-Pecos of Texas. We surveyed 204 bridges and 768 culverts between 2018 and 2019. We observed 7 species of bats using bridges or culverts …

Environmental factors may alter the fetal genome to cause metabolic diseases. It is unknown whether embryonic immune cell programming impacts the risk of type 2 diabetes in later life. We demonstrate that transplantation of fetal hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) made vitamin D deficient in utero induce diabetes in vitamin D-sufficient mice. Vitamin D deficiency epigenetically suppresses Jarid2 expression and activates the Mef2/PGC1a pathway in HSCs, which persists in recipient bone marrow, resulting in adipose macrophage infiltration. These macrophages secrete miR106-5p, which promotes adipose insulin resistance by repressing PIK3 catalytic and regulatory subunits and down-regulating AKT signaling. Vitamin D-deficient monocytes from …

Determination Of Stretching Frequencies By Isotopic Substitution Using Infrared Spectroscopy: An Upper-Level Undergraduate Experiment For An In-Person Or Online Laboratory, Sarah E. Shaner, Kari Stone
Chemistry Department Faculty Articles
A Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) experiment appropriate for an upper-level undergraduate laboratory such as chemical instrumentation is described. Students collect FTIR spectra of four protio-solvents and their deuterated analogues. In addition to qualitatively observing C−H and O−H peaks shift to lower energy upon deuteration, students apply a simple harmonic oscillator model to predict the magnitude of the shifts and gain an understanding of the relationship between reduced mass and vibrational frequencies. Vibrational calculations are then performed to corroborate the experimental results and allow students to visualize the normal modes involved via animations of the vibrations. This experiment is suitable to …

Type I interferon (IFN-1) regulates gene expression and hematopoiesis both during development and in response to inflammatory stress. We previously showed that during development in mice, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and multipotent progenitors (MPPs) induce IFN-1 target genes shortly before birth. This coincides with the onset of a transition to adult hematopoiesis, and it drives the expression of genes associated with antigen presentation. However, it is not clear whether perinatal IFN-1 modulates hematopoietic output, as has been observed in contexts of inflammation. We have characterized hematopoiesis at several different stages of blood formation, from HSCs to mature blood cells, and …

PURPOSE: Encorafenib + cetuximab (E+C) is an effective therapeutic option in chemorefractory BRAFV600E metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). However, there is a need to improve the efficacy of this molecular-targeted therapy and evaluate regimens suitable for untreated BRAFV600E in patients with mCRC.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We performed a series of in vivo studies using BRAFV600E mCRC tumor xenografts. Mice were randomized to receive 5-fluoruracil (5-FU), irinotecan, or oxaliplatin regimens (FOLFIRI or FOLFOX), (E+C) or the combination. Patients received long-term treatment until disease progression, with deescalation strategies used to mimic maintenance therapy. Transcriptomic changes after progression on cytotoxic chemotherapy or targeted therapy were …

Cancer is one of the most lethal diseases. Globally, the number of cancers is nearly 10 million per year. Gynecological cancers (for instance, ovarian, cervical, and endometrial), relying on hidden diseases, misdiagnoses, and high recurrence rates, have seriously affected women's health. Traditional chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy effectively improve the prognosis of gynecological cancer patients. However, with the emergence of adverse reactions and drug resistance, leading to the occurrence of complications and poor compliance of patients, we have to focus on the new treatment direction of gynecological cancers. Because of the potential effects of natural drugs in regulating …

Inadequate Documentation, Communication, And Regulation: How Noaa And Aphis Have Failed Marine Mammals, Mckenzi L. Stevens
Inadequate Documentation, Communication, And Regulation: How Noaa And Aphis Have Failed Marine Mammals, Mckenzi L. Stevens
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
Marine mammals have been used in the U.S. entertainment system for several decades. While they were first acquired through capture from the wild, the trade and birth of marine mammals in facilities of public display – zoos and aquariums – has boomed. Since the early 1940s, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been tasked with maintaining the record of each marine mammal under U.S. ownership. However, documentation has been improperly maintained, leading to inaccurate data, and even the “misplacement” of marine mammals. This is largely due to the lack of communication of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, …

The Role Of Corporations In Solving The Illegal, Unregulated, And Unreported (Iuu) Fishing Crisis, Hunter F. Donovan
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
This article examines the current domestic and international legal framework that provides protections against the effects of IUU fishing as well as the social, economic, and environmental effects of those activities. Domestically, this article examines the Magnuson-Stevens Act for its lack of efficacy in managing IUU fishing in US-controlled waters. Internationally, this article examines a variety of UN resolutions and treaties that seek to manage this crisis but have a minimal effect. Additionally, this article proposes various ways policies could be amended or adopted to best serve the communities that are most impacted by the effects of IUU fishing. Finally, …

Designing Fertility Otherwise: Of Human, Animal And Soil Relations, Nadia Campo Woytuk, Joo Young Park, Marie Louise Juul Søndergaard, Madeline Balaam, Marianela Ciolfi Felice
Nordes Conference Series
This exploratory paper unpacks the design space of fertility sensing, reflecting on current meanings and designs for fertility in humans, animals, and soil. Attending to the curious relations between these, we explore how fertility technologies share histories across patriarchal and capitalist visions of bodies and land. We provide a critical feminist analysis of fertility sensing and begin to unpack how design might approach this space otherwise, by means of exploratory prompts and opportunities that we call ‘design seeds’. We accompany the design seeds with four evocative images, engaging practically and materially with these opportunities, opening up for critical yet hopeful …
Spaces For Friction? Using The Concept Of Free Space As A Starting Point For Sustainable And Desirable Futures, Sven Quadflieg
Spaces For Friction? Using The Concept Of Free Space As A Starting Point For Sustainable And Desirable Futures, Sven Quadflieg
Nordes Conference Series
Free spaces can serve as a blank canvas for the projection of desires and the exploration of possibilities – but these spaces can also create uncertainty or friction due to the potential for various interpretations and outcomes. This friction can be exploited – because it generates questions that help to reflect on our actions in design teaching, theory, and practice, and can thereby generate new ways of thinking. In the context of the great challenge in design – designing in the context of the emerging climatic catastrophe of the Anthropocene - these exploratory questions can be of major importance. Therefore, …

Advent Of Gan: How Does A Generative Ai Create A Moodboard?, Jussi Mikkonen
Nordes Conference Series
The human creativity is now being supported, or challenged, by an easy access to generative tools utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI). Within the last few years, Generative Adversarial Network-based image generation tools have become available for the public. In this paper, we explore how one such tool, called Midjourney, could be used for generating moodboards. Our work focuses on exploring moodboard image generation via text-based prompts. We take note of the active online discussions, where examples and ethical concerns have strongly emerged during the late 2022. As a result, the AI produced imagery that the authors could not have produced themselves …
Walking Backwards As A Radical Practice For Design, Annika Olofsdotter Bergström, Juliana Restrepo-Giraldo
Walking Backwards As A Radical Practice For Design, Annika Olofsdotter Bergström, Juliana Restrepo-Giraldo
Nordes Conference Series
Walking backwards is proposed as a radical design practice as it creates time/spaces in-between needed to counter dominant narratives focused on effectivity. So-called time-saving technologies, instead of creating possibilities for free, spontaneous, unstructured, embodied time, add more time and space for production and consumption. Walking backwards is explored as a relevant practice to learn to work in-between complexities, certainty, and uncertainty. Even though walking is a widely recognised and explored method within the arts and academia, the practice of walking backwards has not been studied for the purposes proposed in this text. The aim is to problematise the notion of …
Ecocritical Experimentation With Object Theatre At A Museum, Jennie Schaeffer
Ecocritical Experimentation With Object Theatre At A Museum, Jennie Schaeffer
Nordes Conference Series
Human activity has globally affected the earth's climate and ecosystems. The museum sector has agency in representing topics of societal significance and climate change. The experiment presented here, took place at a history museum in order to re-work human subject positions in the museum. The method of object theatre with a departure in an ecocritical perspective was evaluated. The result shows that the method might retain a colonial perspective towards animals and nature. Still, the method brings a change in who is the subject in the story, a possible shift in perspective and an incentive to care and act. The …

Prospective Films: When A Strategic Vision Meets The Diversity Of Human Experience, Isabelle Cossin, Estelle Berger, Ioana Ocnarescu
Nordes Conference Series
Through the medium of corporate vision videos, foresight has become a vehicle for companies to communicate on their vision of the future. These films are of strategic importance and should be both watched and designed with awareness of such purposes. Mobilized on an action research project in the mobility sector, our design team accompanied a company towards defining and formalizing their vision of the future mass transportation system. A filmic analysis served as a basis for recommendations, which helped us story-boarding a prospective film meant to spotlight the diversity of human experience rather than conveying a standardized perspective of user …

Delightful Screen Time Visualizations: A Sketching-Based Exploration, Omar Sosa-Tzec
Nordes Conference Series
Uncontrolled smartphone usage and excessive screen time are detrimental to people’s wellbeing. Informing people about screen time behavior is one strategy to help them attain digital wellbeing—a pleasurable, efficient, and controlled relationship with smartphones and other everyday technologies. This paper presents a series of sketches that explore unconventional, delightful screen time visualization on smartphones, illustrating an alternative to conventional screen time graphs. By showcasing these design concepts, this paper seeks to promote analog sketching as a valuable off-screen practice for design research, as it involves immersion, patience, and reflection.
Design Implications Of Feeling Playful: Play Moods + Atmospheres In Dialogue, Helle Marie Skovbjerg, Shanti Sumartojo
Design Implications Of Feeling Playful: Play Moods + Atmospheres In Dialogue, Helle Marie Skovbjerg, Shanti Sumartojo
Nordes Conference Series
Based on a research project Play Stories the aim of this paper is to explore how a combination of theories about play moods and concepts of atmosphere can enrich the field of play design. The paper explores pairing through two design experiments. It shows how play’s atmospheric qualities insist that designers attend to how these moods emerge, and the shifts that happens when the moods emerge. The contribution of the paper is: Atmospheres help us understand the dynamic of moods, and we therefore have to design for several moods; atmospheres show us the multiple elements that can configure when designing …
Teaching Design For Sustainability From The Classroom: Uncomfortable Reflections From A Comfortable Place, Eeva Berglund
Teaching Design For Sustainability From The Classroom: Uncomfortable Reflections From A Comfortable Place, Eeva Berglund
Nordes Conference Series
The paper describes co-teaching on a masters programme with design for sustainability at its core. The programme puts emphasis on involving multiple societal stakeholders but increasingly also on appreciating the often tricky social and value-laden dimensions of designing better futures. In this context, we seek to foster students’ imagination and support their utopian thought and futures-oriented design. The classroom experience shows that this is achievable through rather conventional academic practices, ones rooted in disciplinary insight and empirical and historical research. The paper also suggests that enhancing students’ self-critical understanding of their own situatedness, even their own comforts, by grounding both …
Missing Species: Discursive Design Activism, Margaret Rynning
Missing Species: Discursive Design Activism, Margaret Rynning
Nordes Conference Series
Through a design case, “Missing species”, this article presents how design activism can be applied to a discursive design project and proposes a model for discursive design activism. The case study addresses the issue of biodiversity and invading plants due to humans’ interaction with nature and suggests how design may inform and engage societies and individuals through critical imageries, possibly leading to local engagement. Design activism and presenting design outside of galleries and spaces for designers may lead to a larger and more targeted audience for discursive design.
A Planetary Turn For Design? Speculations On Withdrawal And Cohabitation, Kristine Samson, Michael Haldrup
A Planetary Turn For Design? Speculations On Withdrawal And Cohabitation, Kristine Samson, Michael Haldrup
Nordes Conference Series
Currently, notions of the planetary have made their way to the center field of design's key concern. In this article we ask the question: can we imagine a planetary turn for design and if so, what would be its key concerns. Drawing on ongoing research on urban nature, design and planning in and around Copenhagen, we, outline ‘the planetary turn’ as it has emerged in recent years and relate it to current movements in the design field, before suggesting five propositions open up for the ‘interstice’ and ‘in-between in design’, which we argue is never void of meaning but part …

Speculative Designs In Educational Settings: Tension-Patterns From A (Mostly) European Perspective, Enrique Encinas, Ingi Helgason, James Auger, Ivica Mitrović, Julian Hanna
Nordes Conference Series
The study of speculative designs (such as futures, critical design alternatives, or catalysts for reflection) is well documented in the design research community but the literature lacks attention to speculative designs in the service of a pedagogical practice. This paper reports on a two-year cross European research project investigating speculative designs in higher education contexts. We reflect on a broad data set including interviews, surveys, case studies and workshops involving educators and students. Our contribution draws on the results of this study to propose eight tension-patterns, each an interplay between opposing tendencies that educators and students need to address, more …
