BACKGROUND: Trauma and a subsequent hemorrhagic shock (T/HS) result in insufficient oxygen delivery to tissues and multiple organ failure. Extracellular adenosine, which is a product of the extracellular degradation of adenosine 5' triphosphate (ATP) by the membrane-embedded enzymes CD39 and CD73, is organ protective, as it participates in signaling pathways, which promote cell survival and suppress inflammation through adenosine receptors including the A

METHODS: T/HS shock was induced by blood withdrawal from the femoral artery in wild-type, global knockout (CD39, CD73, A

RESULTS: T/HS upregulated the expression of CD39, CD73, and the A

CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the CD39-CD73-A

Neurofibromatosis Type 1-Associated Optic Pathway Gliomas: Current Challenges And Future Prospects, Yunshuo Tang, David H Gutmann

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Optic pathway glioma (OPG) occurs in as many as one-fifth of individuals with the neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) cancer predisposition syndrome. Generally considered low-grade and slow growing, many children with NF1-OPGs remain asymptomatic. However, due to their location within the optic pathway, ~20-30% of those harboring NF1-OPGs will experience symptoms, including progressive vision loss, proptosis, diplopia, and precocious puberty. While treatment with conventional chemotherapy is largely effective at attenuating tumor growth, it is not clear whether there is much long-term recovery of visual function. Additionally, because these tumors predominantly affect young children, there are unique challenges to NF1-OPG diagnosis, monitoring, …

Trisomy 21, the genetic cause of Down syndrome (DS), is the most common congenital chromosomal anomaly. It is associated with a 20-fold increased risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) during childhood and results in distinctive leukemia biology. To comprehensively define the genomic landscape of DS-ALL, we performed whole-genome sequencing and whole-transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) on 295 cases. Our integrated genomic analyses identified 15 molecular subtypes of DS-ALL, with marked enrichment of CRLF2-r, IGH::IGF2BP1, and C/EBP altered (C/EBPalt) subtypes compared with 2257 non-DS-ALL cases. We observed abnormal activation of the CEBPD, CEBPA, and CEBPE genes in 10.5% of DS-ALL cases via a …

The Desert And The Sa'alik: The Creation Of Identity In Pre-Islamic Arabia, Maya H. Saidel Jul 2023

The Desert And The Sa'alik: The Creation Of Identity In Pre-Islamic Arabia, Maya H. Saidel

Studies in Mediterranean Antiquity and Classics

The sa’alik were poets who were expelled from their tribes and occupied the fringes of society in Pre-Islamic Arabia. The brooding poetry they composed as they roamed the desert sands in solitude presents a fascinating opportunity to explore the role of the environment in constructing vagabond identity. This paper analyzes Lamiyatt al-Arab by al-Shanfara and How I Met the Ghul by Ta’abatta Sharran in order to elucidate the nature of the sa’alik’s engagement with their arid environment. In the absence of the social and physical comforts of a tribe, the sa’alik sought to integrate themselves into an alternative web of …

Marine Macroalgae Derived Natural Product Inhibitors Of Advanced Glycation End Product Formation By Scavenging Of Reactive Carbonyl Species And Their Implications In Slowing The Progression Of Prevalent Chronic Diseases, George Hanna Jul 2023

Marine Macroalgae Derived Natural Product Inhibitors Of Advanced Glycation End Product Formation By Scavenging Of Reactive Carbonyl Species And Their Implications In Slowing The Progression Of Prevalent Chronic Diseases, George Hanna

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Reactive Carbonyl Species (RCS) arise from the degradation of essential primary metabolites—sugars and lipids. The resulting stress, derived from their ability to spontaneously react with proteins, DNA, and monoamine neurotransmitters, is a fundamental biological pressure that has driven the evolution of diverse mechanisms for minimizing its impact on organismal health. Relevant to human health, the complications that accompany metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, illustrate what happens when RCS stress exceeds the body’s capacity to prevent excessive damage and the formation of the resulting Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE). These include elevated risks for cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, neurodegeneration, …

CVD is responsible for approximately 31% of global deaths,1 and approximately 25% of adults in the United States (US) have CVD.2 The American Heart Association has identified eight primary measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health: Life’s Essential 8.3 However, a lesser recognized measure that has a profound effect on cardiovascular health has recently emerged,4-5 that of the gut microbiome. The link between cardiovascular health and diet is not merely due to essential nutrients found in …

The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith Jul 2023

The Biblical Worldview And Libraries, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay documents the process and outcomes of a structured, group-based effort used to explore the connections between the biblical worldview and librarianship. Participants in the inquiry process included the author (as moderator) and seven of his colleagues. The process entailed examining four “frames” of the biblical narrative (Creation, Fall, Redemption, and Consummation) and eliciting implications for the realm of libraries. The biblical worldview was found to provide remarkably practical theory concerning libraries, accounting for their existence across diverse cultures worldwide; plausibly explaining virtues, flaws, opportunities, and challenges; and prescribing principles through which Christians can advance God’s kingdom through library …

An Observed Increase In Cardiovascular And Respiratory-Disease Related Hospitalizations And Mortality In An Area Surrounding A Hazardous Waste Thermal Treatment Plant, Liana Isabelle Dela Torre Baconguis

LSU Master's Theses

Particulate matter (PM) pollution is highly correlated with respiratory and cardiovascular disease incidence. The generation of oxidative stress is a major way by which PM can damage the body. Environmentally persistent free radical-containing PM are generated by combustion processes and are capable of exerting increased damage on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems due to their ability to remain stable and regenerate reactive oxygen species for up to five years. Clean Harbors, LLC operates a thermal treatment plant near the city of Colfax, LA in Central Louisiana. Its regular open burning of explosives causes disturbances to the community, such as loud …

Abstract

The leaf and root composition of different cultivars of ornamental sweetpotatoes (‘Blackie’, ‘Kakura’, ‘Manihi’, ‘Makatea’, ‘Tahiti’ and ‘Tatakoto’) were analyzed, and the impact of various factors on the levels of nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, phenolic compounds, sugars, and organic acids in these sweetpotato cultivars were determined. The principal macronutrients found in sweetpotato foliage and roots were nitrogen (N), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), and sulfur (S). Nitrogen was the most abundant macronutrient among all cultivars in sweetpotato foliage, whereas potassium was the most abundant macronutrient in sweetpotato roots. The principal micronutrients found in foliage and roots were …

Evaluating Vaccine Management Strategies For Edwardsiella Ictaluri Infections In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Brandy Malbrough Jul 2023

Evaluating Vaccine Management Strategies For Edwardsiella Ictaluri Infections In Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Brandy Malbrough

LSU Master's Theses

Aquaculture is a globally important industry that faces significant challenges due to infectious diseases, which can result in substantial financial losses. In 2011, a new strain of Edwardsiella ictaluri emerged as a major pathogen affecting zebrafish in the ornamental fish industry, leading to high mortality rates and posing a severe threat to the sector. Vaccines provide potential benefits for disease prevention in aquaculture, particularly live-attenuated vaccines (LAVs), which induce strong host immune responses. Bacterial attenuation for vaccine development has evolved from serial passage to more targeted genetic modification techniques. However, regulatory constraints limit the availability of licensed LAVs for aquaculture. …

The Limitations Of Periapical X-Ray Assessment In Endodontic Diagnosis—A Systematic Review, A Gliga, M Imre, S Grandini, C Marruganti, C Gaeta, D Bodnar, Ba Dimitriu, F Foschi Jul 2023

The Limitations Of Periapical X-Ray Assessment In Endodontic Diagnosis—A Systematic Review, A Gliga, M Imre, S Grandini, C Marruganti, C Gaeta, D Bodnar, Ba Dimitriu, F Foschi

Peninsula Dental School

Diagnosis is a key aspect in endodontic treatment, in a decade where invasive interventions are misapprehended as social tendency instead of medical necessity. All diagnostic facets should be considered before intending the operative phase. Intraoral endodontic radiology-based diagnosis has been shown to be limited. Periapical X-ray is the most used endodontic imaging, yet it does not provide high accuracy. Traditionally, dentists have been trained to diagnose a cyst by certain aspects (size, shape and appearance); hence, an assumption that teeth are affected by “periapical cyst” were subjected to unnecessary extraction or apicoectomy. The aim of this systematic review is to …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Xylooligosaccharides (XOSs) are increasingly being explored as prebiotics in fish diets; however, their effects and modes of action have not been well evaluated. Reports have shown that dietary XOS has the potential to improve the proliferation of beneficial gut microbes, and their metabolites, and enhance disease resistance in several fish species. In contrast, other studies report no substantial changes in immune and growth parameters compared to control groups. Like all prebiotics, the mode of action of XOS is based on their selective stimulation of beneficial gut microbiota, which will outcompete and prevent pathogen proliferation in the gut, and produce metabolites …

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in glioma initiation and progression. Glioma stem cells (GSCs) are essential for tumor initiation, maintenance, and therapeutic resistance. However, the biological functions and underlying mechanisms of lncRNAs in GSCs remain poorly understood. Here, we identified that LINC00839 was overexpressed in GSCs. A high level of LINC00839 was associated with GBM progression and radiation resistance. METTL3-mediated m6A modification on LINC00839 enhanced its expression in a YTHDF2-dependent manner. Mechanistically, LINC00839 functioned as a scaffold promoting c-Src-mediated phosphorylation of β-catenin, thereby inducing Wnt/β-catenin activation. Combinational use of celecoxib, an inhibitor of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, greatly sensitized GSCs to …

Is The Public Aware Of Water Quality Monitoring And Safety Notifications On Beaches?, Asli Aslan, Jeffery A. Jones, Dziyana Nazaruk, Sibel Zeki

Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association

Recreational water-related activities have important public health benefits, however, pollution at beaches may have serious health risks. Although there is a substantial amount of research and policies in place at federal and state levels, oftentimes these efforts may not be well translated to the public. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of routine water quality monitoring and warning systems in Georgia, USA. A survey was conducted among 238 beachgoers in Georgia, asking about awareness of water quality monitoring and warning signs for beach advisories. Surveys were collected directly at beaches as well as through an online questionnaire. Results show that more …
