An Early Pliocene Fish Assemblage From The Southern Appalachians: Ichthyofauna Of The Gray Fossil Site, Shay Maden
An Early Pliocene Fish Assemblage From The Southern Appalachians: Ichthyofauna Of The Gray Fossil Site, Shay Maden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Gray Fossil Site (GFS) preserves an early Pliocene sinkhole pond that accumulated a rich flora and vertebrate fauna. Fossils of fish are incredibly common at GFS, representing thousands of specimens recovered to date. Comparison with extant species reveals a depauperate freshwater fish fauna consisting of only two species: Lepomis sp. and Micropterus sp. The absence of fishes that are ubiquitous in modern streams suggests no perennial surface hydrologic connection between the Gray Fossil Site and the nearby Holston River. Limited opportunities for dispersal into the pond and deleterious conditions such as eutrophy and high competition may have resulted in …

Prairie Protector: Student Development Of Systems Thinking Habits In The Context Of Agroecosystems, Erin Ingram, Jennifer Keshwani
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Introduction: The Great Plains ecosystem offers an opportunity for young people to gain knowledge about intricate systems through practical learning. The spread of woody plants into grasslands, known as the “Green Glacier,” poses a risk to biodiversity and animal production. Although effective management strategies exist, some land managers are reluctant to use them. It is critical to cultivate a scientifically literate population that can think systematically and make informed decisions based on STEM principles to address such complex agroecosystem problems.
Methods: In this study, semi-structured focus group discussions with high school students were analyzed to determine whether Prairie …
Business Cycle Downturn Estimation For Ciudad Juarez: 1991-2022, Steven L. Fullerton, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr.
Business Cycle Downturn Estimation For Ciudad Juarez: 1991-2022, Steven L. Fullerton, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr.
Border Region Modeling Project
A monthly frequency metropolitan business cycle downturn likelihood equation is estimated for Ciudad Juarez. The binary index of economic conditions is based upon monthly IMMEX export oriented manufacturing employment. A dynamic probit methodology is used for parameter estimation. Continuous explanatory variables include a 1-year minus 1-month Mexico interest rate spread, a 2015 = 100 weighted real exchange rate index, and a 10-year minus 3-month USA interest rate spread. Parameter estimation results confirm the various hypotheses examined. However, model simulation outcomes are less favorable with the results indicating that accurate forecasting of the post-2010 business cycles may require additional refinement to …

Exogenous Exposure To Dihydroxyacetone Mimics High Fructose Induced Oxidative Stress And Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Raj Mehta
Honors Theses
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a three-carbon sugar that is the active ingredient in sunless tanning products and a by-product of electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) combustion. Increased use of sunless tanning products and e-cigarettes has elevated exposures to DHA through inhalation and absorption. Studies have confirmed that DHA is rapidly absorbed into cells and can enter into metabolic pathways following phosphorylation to dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP), a product of fructose metabolism. Recent reports have suggested metabolic imbalance and cellular stress results from DHA exposures. However, the impact of elevated exposure to DHA on human health is currently under-investigated. We propose that exogenous exposures to …
A Case For Educational Communication On Sustainable Stormwater Management Sites Using Interpretive Methods: Applications For Utah State University, Lilian Taft
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Humans are increasingly urbanizing landscapes, lowering the land’s ability to infiltrate stormwater, increasing surface water runoff. This, combined with decreasing water availability in the Intermountain West, produces the issue of sustainable stormwater management. Professionals are moving toward green stormwater infrastructure (GSI), but public is often not aware of stormwater’s impacts on natural environments or what the purpose of GSI is. Stormwater management design techniques are evolving to use visible, sustainable methods celebrating stormwater, rather than treating the valuable resource as a disposable nuisance, channeling it underground and out of sight. Artful Rainwater Design (ARD), a technique coined by Stuart Echols …

Sales And Stock Management System, Rashmika Gaddam Ms
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Grocery stores using Excel for managing sales and stock management could involve maintaining separate sheets for sales and stock data, with revenue/cost. This system could provide a basic level of tracking and analysis, allowing the grocery store to monitor sales trends and stock levels. However, using Excel for this purpose is not without its challenges. For example, the manual nature of data entry in excel can result in errors and inconsistencies, particularly if multiple people are involved in maintaining the sheets. Additionally, as the volume of sales and stock data grows, the Excel spreadsheet can become unwieldy and slow, …

Interrogations Of The Tumor Microenvironment Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Tianzhe Li
Interrogations Of The Tumor Microenvironment Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Tianzhe Li
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Both tumor acidosis and tumor hypoxia are characteristics commonly found in the microenvironment of solid malignant tumors. Accurate characterization of the two phenomena could provide important information to clinicians for devising suitable treatment plans. Tumor acidosis and hypoxia are closely linked to each other. Tumor acidosis is caused by the inclination of cancer cells towards anaerobic respiration, and one of the main contributing factors for the avoidance of aerobic respiration is tumor hypoxia. Both phenomena can indicate the high metastatic potential of cancers and can also cause resistance of the cancer systems against anti-cancer therapies. Therefore, developing novel molecular imaging …
Role Of Phosphorylated Dicer1 In Tumor Progression, Raisa Reyes-Castro
Role Of Phosphorylated Dicer1 In Tumor Progression, Raisa Reyes-Castro
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
DICER1 is a multidomain enzyme discovered and widely recognized for its function in small non-coding microRNA (miRNA) synthesis. In cancer development, DICER1 functions as a haploinsufficient tumor suppressor which regulates miRNAs and Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT). The Arur laboratory discovered that DICER1 is phosphorylated by active ERK and that ERK-mediated phosphorylation triggers DICER1 to translocate from the cytoplasm to the nucleus of cells in worms, mice and humans. Further, a heterozygous allele of a genetically engineered mouse model of phosphomimetic Dicer1 when combined with heterozygous Kras oncogenic background contributes to lung tumor progression in vivo. Mechanisms through which phosphomimetic Dicer1 …

Genetic Analysis Of Crossover Defective Mouse Spermatocytes Reveals Discrete Crossover Precursor Intermediates, Tolkappiyan Prem Kumar
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
In healthy, non-replicating somatic cells of diploid organisms, like humans and mice, there are two copies of each chromosome, one from each parent. However, the germ cells of these organisms, the oocytes, and the sperm, have only one copy of each chromosome, thus ensuring that when haploid oocytes and sperm fuse to form a zygote, a diploid number of chromosomes is restored. The reduction of a diploid number of chromosomes to a haploid number of chromosomes takes place during meiosis. The meiotic cell cycle consists of two rounds of cell division, Meiosis I and Meiosis II. Meiosis I create haploid …

Therapeutic Potential Of Prmt5 And Mat2a As Synthetic Lethal Targets In Mtap-Deficient Gbm Tumors, Yasaman Barekatain
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Homozygous deletion of methylthioadenosine phosphorylase (MTAP) is a frequent genetic alteration found in approximately 15% of all human cancers, including glioblastoma, pancreatic cancer, mesothelioma, urothelial bladder carcinoma, and lung squamous cell carcinoma. MTAP is a critical metabolic enzyme in the methionine salvage pathway responsible for the breakdown of methylthioadenosine (MTA). As a result, MTAP-deleted cells cannot metabolize MTA, leading to the accumulation of MTA. High levels of MTA in MTAP-deleted cells partially inhibit the activity of protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), making these cells sensitive to PRMT5 and MAT2A inhibition. Although elevated levels of MTA in …
Isolation Of Therapeutic Antibodies Against Microseminoprotien To Potentially Overcome Resistance To Anti-Angiogenic Therapy, Mason Ruiz

Unveiling Immune Checkpoint Therapy Resistance Mechanisms In The Tumor Microenvironment Using High-Dimensional Analyses, Swetha Anandhan
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
The advent of immune checkpoint therapy (ICT) has transformed cancer treatment, but its effectiveness is limited in certain cancers like pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), which exhibit resistance to this therapy. To overcome this challenge, it is crucial to understand the underlying mechanisms that determine tumor response to ICT and develop rational therapeutic combinations. The tumor microenvironment (TME), including suppressive myeloid cells, regulatory T cells (Tregs), and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), plays a pivotal role in ICT responses. Leveraging single-cell technologies, this study explores the role and function of immune subsets in the TME that induce therapy resistance.

Protein L Functionalized Microparticles For Early Detection Of Surface Markers In Heterogeneous Colorectal Lesions, Saleh Ramezani
Protein L Functionalized Microparticles For Early Detection Of Surface Markers In Heterogeneous Colorectal Lesions, Saleh Ramezani
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths among both men and women worldwide, a statistic that can be improved with early detection. Increased understanding of the tumor landscape has identified surface antigens that can be utilized to distinguish normal and cancerous tissue lining the colonic lumen. Use of antibodies conjugated to nano/micromaterials offers a means to detect these antigens, however, the heterogeneous nature of tumors makes it unlikely that antibodies against a single antigen will have sufficient sensitivity and specificity to detect all tumors. A versatile micromaterial able to be functionalized with more than one targeting …

Role Of Il-17/Il-17ra Signaling In The Pancreatic Tumor Microenvironment, Susana Castro Pando, Susana Castro Pando
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is projected to become the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths. PDAC is characterized by the early establishment of a highly immunosuppressive fibro-cellular tumor microenvironment (TME). Our research has revealed the important role of IL-17 in the development and progression of pancreatic cancer, yet the specific cellular compartment responsible for IL-17-mediated tumor promotion remains unknown. We generated a transgenic mouse model with pancreatic KrasG12D activation and selective deletion of IL-17RA in the epithelial vs. immune component using either genetic manipulation or bone marrow transplantation. Deletion of IL17RA from the pancreatic epithelial compartment delayed premalignant lesion development …

Environmental sustainability represents a challenge for society since industrial growth has a direct impact on natural resources and waste production. New technologies that effectively incorporate waste into renewable resources are critical to the development of a sustainable and circular economy. The manufacturing of structural materials like Portland cement (OPC) is responsible for >8% of the global anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide, with ~ 1 kg of CO2 released to the atmosphere for every kilogram of OPC produced. For instance, the development of sustainable structural materials is a key factor to reduce the greenhouse emissions and to attenuate the climate …
Elucidating Acetate Metabolism: Identification Of Transporters And Enzymes Required For Acetate Utilization In The Fungal Pathogen Cryptococcus Neoformans, Perry L. Kezh
All Dissertations
Cryptococcus neoformans is the leading cause of fungal meningitis world-wide. While exposure to this environmental sporophyte is common during childhood, those who are immune compromised are at risk of infection. Following inhalation, this basidiomycetous fungus subsequently colonizes other organs though hematogenous dissemination, eventually crossing the blood brain barrier and colonizing the brain where it causes as cryptococcal meningitis. Changes in the availability of carbon sources stemming from the movement from soil to the lungs induce changes in fungal metabolism. Specifically, alveolar macrophages, which present a first line of defense against infection, provide a glucose-/amino acid-poor environment. As such, the use …
